"This Is Alabama. We Speak English."

Abby Zimet

With election season upon us, tea partiers ever more rabid, and Arizona
about to declare racial profiling kosher, let the truly unsubtle pandering begin. Tim James, GOP candidate
for governor of Alabama, has a new ad in which he vows to enforce a law
declaring English the state's official language, because that's

website's  "Common Sense Solutions for Crime and Public Safety," James
also manages to equate meth addicts and wife beaters with people who
need help filling out forms in English. Bette Davis Redux: Buckle your
seats, it's gonna be a long, bumpy, racist ride.
