On Righteous Anger

by

In a speech at Harvard Wednesday night, AFL-CIO President Richard
Trumka warned
that the justifiable anger of working people in this country is being
dangerously twisted into hatred by the right. He argued that change can
only come through a progressive alliance of organized labor, the poor, the middle class and
"public-minded intellectuals" who make a conscious decision to be
critics, not servants, of economic privilege.

"There are forces in our country that are working hard to convert
justifiable anger about an economy that only seems to work for a few of
us into racist and homophobic hate and violence... Most of all, those
forces of hate seek to divide working people - to turn our anger against
each other."
