A Deadly Record
The Massey Energy coal mine in West Virginia where scores died
yesterday has been cited
for over 3,000 safety violations resulting in over $2.2 million in fines
- most of which the company is contesting - reports ThinkProgress.
Massey's CEO Don Blankenship, known for ranting that his critics are
"communists" and "enemies" akin to Bin Laden, has been dubbed "the
scariest polluter in the U.S."
"We are all brothers and sisters in
the coalfields at times like this." - United Mine Workers president Cecil Roberts, who has sent experts to the accident site even
though it occurred at a non-union mine.
Update: Blankenship earned $19.7 million in 2008, a 17% decrease
from the year before. A special place in Hell awaits him.
