The growing sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church has reached ever closer to Pope Benedict XVI, with a New York Times piece charging
that as then-Cardinal he ignored the serial transgressions of a
pedophile priest in Wisconsin who molested 200 deaf boys over 20 years
- the latest in a score of cover-up charges involving priests across
Europe. Four U.S. survivors of priest abuse were arrested at the
Vatican after protesting the cover-ups, and New Yorkers are calling for a Sunday protest, titled "Shame on Ratzinger," at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
"I simply want to live out the time that I have left in the dignity of
my priesthood," Father Murphy, the alleged pedophile priest, wrote to
then-Cardinal Ratzinger. "I ask your kind assistance in this matter."
