The Bread of Dependence

Happy 190th Birthday to Susan B. Anthony, the mother of the women's
suffrage movement. The event was marked by the opening of a museum in
her honor, complete with controversy about her possibly anti-abortion stance - controversy that by all accounts she would have savored.

"There is not the woman born who desires to eat the bread of
dependence, no matter whether it be from the hand of father, husband,
or brother; for any one who does so eat her bread places herself in the
power of the person from whom she takes it."

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.

Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do.
