Accepting that our good guys these days are often profoundly flawed, we choose to remember Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha,
who died today at 77, not for his probable ethical lapses or longtime
hawkish views but for his blistering criticism of the Iraq War - a
criticism that meant denouncing much of what he had ever believed in. A
former Marine who was considered the voice of veterans, the defender of blue-collar values and, more questionably, the King of Pork in Congress, it must have cost him dearly to break with the military might he had spent his life defending.
