10 Brainless Yankees, A Million Homeless Haitians

Abby Zimet

The insatiable media has gone to town on the story of those
hapless U.S. Christians in Haiti: Their arrest has been breathlessly

covered, the tawdry past of their leader gleefully exposed. But all the egocentric news coverage blurs one key fact, notes the Haitian prime minister: The suffering of many, many Haitians goes on. You can still donate to the above groups. Despite our short attention spans, the need remains.

"I believe it's a distraction for the
Haitian people because they are talking more now about 10 people than
they are about one million people suffering in the streets." - Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive

FRIENDS: Now More Than Ever

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
