Not Against Animals, or Stray Cats, or Poor People, or Kids. Really.

Eloquent GOP Dept: South Carolina's Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who is
running for governor, said he wishes he "had used a different metaphor"
last week when he compared people who get public assistance to stray animals. But damn if he didn't up and do it again, with cats this time. We love what these guys do for the level of political discourse in this country.

"My grandmother
was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to
quit feeding stray animals. You
know why? Because they breed. You're facilitating the problem
if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will
reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that.
And so what you've got to do is you've got to curtail that type of
behavior. They don't know any better."

FRIENDS: Help Us Fight

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
