Arendt's Banality of Evil

Abby Zimet

With a banal exchange of pleasantries - "You look different without
a cap...You look different without the jump suits" - an awkward meeting
between a former Gitmo guard and his detainees took place as part of a
BBC documentary. Does this represent healing, true reconciliation? Is
it simple, icky, mainstream PR? Does it undo any of the wrongs done, and is there any
way, really, to do that? Consciousness, one could say, is a first step.
But what a long pained way to go.

"I was basically just putting innocent people in cages." - former Gitmo guard Brandon Neely.

FRIENDS: Now More Than Ever

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
