Going a tad overboard in their response to the latest Yes Men hoax,
the government of Canada wiped out 4,500 websites with the help of
international cybersecurity agencies as it tried to shut down a couple
of parody sites criticizing its environmental policies. Posing as
Canadian officials in Copenhagen last month, the Yes Men announced a
series of bold climate change initiatives that, charged the real guys, caused "confusion among the public concerning Canadian governmental affairs."

"We are sorry to see that the Canadian government will not 'take
certain actions' that could help stave off catastrophic climate
change," said Mike Bonanno. "And we are also sorry to see that they don't care so much for free speech."

FRIENDS: Now More Than Ever

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
