Shame on Wall Street. In numbers tough to absorb, a new report
from the U.S. Agriculture Department found the number of Americans who
either lack "food security" or are just plain hungry in these lean times shot up to 49
million, the highest figure ever recorded. The number of children in
homes where food sometimes ran short rose from 12 million to 17 million
- over one in five kids - and the number who were outright hungry rose
to over a million. To help food banks in New York City, go here; to help elsewhere in the country go here or here.
