In a disturbing trend, the Catholic Church has
emerged as a newly powerful political voice after strong-arming the
Stupack amendment, which restricts access to abortion coverage, into
the House health bill with the help of conservative Democrats. The
Church spent months lobbying, writing letters and circulating fliers
headlined, "Health Care Reform is About Saving Lives, Not Destroying
Them." More here and here.
"The Catholic bishops came in at the last minute and drew a line in
the sand," said Laurie Rubiner of Planned Parenthood. "It's very hard to
compete with that."
