So Much For Outreach

Abby Zimet

At the time, perhaps it seemed a good idea. The GOP would hire an ostensibly black man, one Michael Steele, to reach beyond the base to attract what were rumored to be the many people in this country who are not old rich white men. But that was before Steele opened his mouth.

In a new interview with Univision, Steele waxed insane on various topics. He said the country doesn't need comprehensive health reform but the GOP "commonsense solution" of "applying a little, you know, elbow grease" to a health care system that is "the best in the country." He said "illegal aliens" should in fact be called "illegal aliens,"  not "undocumented workers," because they are. And he said he is  "sick and tired" of people "playing the hot politics" of immigration, when what they need to do is "bring the level head to it."

 "What we should
be saying is that there are rules that you need to get into the
country, go the right door, fill out the right form, have some apple
pie, hum a few bars of the Star Spangle Banner and get to work, God
bless you. And I think that that begins to set us on the right road to
dealing with this issue."

Um, okay. More here.
