Some of My Best Friends

President Obama's parents

A moment of surreal synchronicity today, as President Obama,
arguably the most powerful person in the world and the son of an
interracial couple, visited Louisiana, where Keith Bardwell, a small
town justice of the peace, refused to marry an interracial couple because "the children will later suffer" and "I just
don't believe in mixing the races that way." Yes. In 2009. But he is not, Bardwell says, a racist.

"I have piles and piles of black friends.
They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them
just like everyone else."

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.

Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do. Without Your Support We Simply Don't Exist.
