In awful but unsurprising news, the Senate Finance Committee has
rejected the robust public-option health  amendment by West Virginia
Sen. Jay Rockefeller. Thanks to no votes by five Democrats - more here - it went down in a 15-8 vote. The rapacious insurance industry - doesn't everyone hate them? - wins a big one. What is wrong with these people?

Jay Rockefeller on private insurers: "They're getting away with terrible things."

Update: Jeez. Now even Chuck Schumer's very modest, barely public proposal has failed, 10 to 13. If despair was an option, we would.

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.

Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do.
