The Test of Our Times Indeed: Playing Politics With Terror

Remember the famous color-coded terror alert? Remember your
suspicion it was often politically manipulated? Remember how anyone who
suggested that was labelled a cynic, or terrorist-sympathizer, or
whatever's worse than that? Surprise! You were right. In a new book,
Bush Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge says he considered resigning
when he was urged to issue a high security alert on the eve of Bush's
election. Talk about cynicism.

"We don't do politics in the Department of Homeland Security."
