El Salvador has become the first country in the world to ban
gold mining, thanks to public opposition and advocacy work by an umbrella organization of human rights groups. The El Salvador National Committee Against Metal Mining cited the ravages inflicted by heavy metal mining – including water contamination, health problems and community displacement – on a country still trying to recover from civil war.
