Gay Pride on the Range

Amsterdam , The Netherlands 2008

Amidst this weekend's multitude of
Gay Pride events – Berlin's parade drawing 550,000 people, Chicago's
Dyke March and Mamma Mia Sing-Along, Dublin's 'Pride and Prejudice'
parade in tuxes and wedding gowns, New York's Madonna Madness and
Rapture On The River Dances – comes news of
the first-ever Equality float in the annual Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo
Parade in Hollister, Ca., a self-described "conservative, old-fashioned cowboy and cattle town."
The rainbow-flag-bedecked float, we are told, "drew cheers and some
jeers, but they were...rather civilized."

 "We just
think it's time to let the people of Hollister see us as regular
people," said lesbian and cowgirl Lisa Vallejo, who with her partner
will be roping and riding at the rodeo.

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.

Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do.
