Veritasiness, and A Good Question

From the landing in Iraq, where he's pummeled with shoes, to the camouflage suit and Veritasiness crest, to the goofy but pointed gags – "It must be nice here in Iraq 'cause some of you keep coming back again and again" – you have to give Stephen Colbert credit for taking his show, "Yikes" sign and all, to the troops in Iraq. It's a tricky balancing act, his clueless character in the midst of so much hardship, and he doesn't always pull it off, but he shows grace and grit and gives some laughs to folks who no doubt need it. The best moment is his word of the day. Says it all:

 "Why are you here?"

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
