Coal-Fired Blessings: Broke, Unschooled and Toothless

With West Virginia getting more electricity from coal than any other state, it's fitting that Gov. Joe Manchin yesterday declared coal the official state rock. Coal, it turns out, has given the state much more to celebrate: the country's lowest ranking median income, education, social and mental health services, and college graduates, the highest number of people with disabilities, and among the highest rates of tooth loss and obesity.
