People Just Like You, Except We're Made of AstroTurf

Abby Zimet

Already dubbed "a professional AstroTurf machine" for concocting a host of faux grassroots movements – Tea Parties, 'Drill Baby Drill' rallies, Joe the Plumber tours – the corporate-funded Americans for Prosperity is launching a new, grossly distorted ad campaign against Obama's health care reform proposals. The ads for Patients United Now say, basically, we'll all die from health reform.

"We are people just like you," intones one ad. "We went to D.C. with questions about 'reform'...But what we found SHOCKED us: Radical solutions. Discussions behind closed doors. Patients like us NOT included, just big companies, lobbyists, unions and politicans."

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.

Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do. Without Your Support We Won't Exist.
