In a change that immigrant advocates warn
could lead to the criminalization of illegal immigration, the Obama administration plans to expand a Bush-era program aimed at checking the legal status of all inmates of local jails, not just federal and state prisons, in hopes of deporting those convicted of crimes. The move could result in a tenfold increase of "criminal aliens."
"Many, many legal immigrants are going to be pulled into this net
even for minor violations..." said Tom Barry of the Center for International Policy, "and after they've lived here 10
or 20 years, they're going to be deported."
