(FMLN), former Marxist guerrillas led by a journalist, is a stunning shift in power that represents what FMLN leader Mauricio Funes called "choosing the path of hope." The time has come, he said, "
for the excluded...for men and women who believe in social justice and
solidarity."

"We
knew this day would come one day," said Silvia Gomez, 51, of enduring two decades of right-wing rule.
"Not like a dream, but like something you see out there and it just
takes a little more effort to reach it."
