Despite a report from the ACLU that the
Patriot Act has been "disastrous for Americans’ rights," more than a dozen conservative House Republicans have introduced a bill to reauthorize what Lamar Smith of Texas called its "proven and effective" provisions that allow "roving" wiretaps, perusal of library information and expanded surveillance.
Minority Leader John Boehner did not sign on as cosponsor but supported the move, calling the Patriot Act "a part of helping to keep America safe."
"We’ve got to
do everything we can in this time of economic crisis to protect our
citizens from those who’d want to harm us,” he said.
You mean, like Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch, Wachovia, AIG, Madoff...?
