A Lowly But Brilliant Idea

Abby Zimet

In the midst of another lifetime of trying to make a business call and wading through 37 options of buttons to push for answers to 37 questions I didn't have and waiting for the option (usually but not always Push Zero) to give me a real, live, elusive biped at the end of the line, it occurred to me: People need jobs. People need money. People – with apologies to Barbra Streisand, though I never much liked her – need people. Thus: Instead of having automatons answer our phones, how's about we return to the good old technogically-challenged days of talking to human beings?

Someone, please, quick, send this idea to Geithner, Locke, Solis et al. I'm busy wading through options.

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.

Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do.
