Fighting Words

Abby Zimet

It's bracing to hear the populist, fair-minded side of President Obama emerge Saturday on behalf of a spending blueprint aimed at accomplishing the things we elected him to do – tax the rich, give the rest of us a break, lower healthcare costs, reform education and expand clean renewable energy. To do this amidst the current recession, Obama plans to end subsidies and tax breaks and take other radically sensible actions he acknowledges "won't sit well with the special interests and
lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business."

"I know they're gearing up for a fight as we speak. My message to them
is this: So am I...The system we have now might work for the powerful
well-connected interests that have run Washington for far too
long, but I don't. I work for the American people."

We know. It's words at this point. Now for action. We wish him well.
