Health Care for Kids

Abby Zimet

With the Senate poised this week to vote on expanding children's healthcare coverage under the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), is urging people to write their senators to ensure passage of the much-needed legislation. Without it, they say, the number of uninsured kids – now, an estimated 1 in 8 – is likely to rise.

According to MomsRising, as many as 1.2 million children lost employer-sponsored healthcare coverage in the past year alone; today, about nine million children are uninsured. As more people lose their jobs – on Monday, over 40,000 reportedly did – those numbers are expected to go up.

Last week, SCHIP passed quickly through the House and Senate Finance committee, and the House of Representatives. The Senate's passage of SCHIP, says MomsRising, would be "a huge step forward" toward protecting children and ensuring more comprehensive health care reform. If Congress acts fast, a fully funded SCHIP and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, restoring women’s right to challenge unequal pay, could be among the first bills on President Obama's desk.
