Libya No Model
With Qaddafi on the run, we’re now hearing about Libya being a model for future U.S. interventions. The New York Times today reports that Administration officials say the Libyan intervention “may, in some important ways, become a model for how the United States wields force in other countries where its interests are threatened.” I should hope not.

NYPD and CIA Need to Be Investigated
The CIA is not supposed to be involved in domestic law enforcement. But according to a blockbuster story by the AP , it’s up to its neck in it in New York City, working dirty hand in black glove with NYPD, doing things that even the FBI isn’t allowed to do.

Obama Just Got Run Over
The debt ceiling agreement is a disaster. The Republicans won. The tea partiers won. The Democrats lost. Progressives lost. The American people lost. And Obama lost. Obama has largely himself to blame for this rout. For way too long, he tilted at bipartisanship instead of rallying his own troops. He woefully underestimated his political enemies, who have now proven that they will do anything—including threatening to wreck the economy—to get their way and to make him fail.

No Wonder Obama Is Losing Support from the Left
CNN has just come out with a poll that shows Obama losing support from his left flank. “Roughly one in four Americans who disapprove of the president say they feel that way because he's not been liberal enough,” the poll said. “Obama's approval rating among liberals has dropped to 71 percent, the lowest point in his presidency.”

Get Over Ourselves on July 4
This July 4, I wish we, as a nation, would get over ourselves. We are not God’s chosen people. God did not make us a shining city on a hill. There is no God, and we have no special right to lord ourselves over the planet. “Manifest Destiny” and other narcissistic ideas have swollen our heads. President Obama was way off the mark when he recently said, “We must embrace America’s singular role in the course of human events,” he said.

Obama: Three More Years of War in Afghanistan
Our war president promised more war. While he trumpeted his big Afghanistan speech as the first step in ending that war, Barack Obama essentially told the American people that tens of thousands of our soldiers would still be fighting there for at least three more years. A year from now, Obama said all the additional “surge” troops will be back home. But the U.S. will still have close to 70,000 troops in Afghanistan, twice the number that were there when Obama took office.

The IMF Chief’s Rape Charge: Metaphor for the IMF’s Abuse of Power
I don’t like using the word rape as a metaphor, but the charge against the head of the International Monetary Fund is almost a perfect metaphor for the IMF’s role in the world. IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is accused of attempted rape against an African maid in a luxury hotel in New York City. And while the truth of this allegation remains for the legal system to sort out, screwing helpless people over in the Third World (and Eastern Europe: see Naomi Klein’s “The Shock Doctrine”) is what the IMF is all about.

Even with bin Laden’s Scalp, Obama No Shoo-in for 2012
I’ve heard several people on talk radio and friends in casual conversation assert that the President’s taking of bin Laden’s scalp will assure him reelection in 2012. Don’t count on it. Before this event, Obama’s poll numbers were in the low to mid-40s, which is very low. And a huge percentage of Americans thought the country was on the wrong track. These numbers had nothing to do with bin Laden still being on the loose.

Bin Laden’s Crimes, and Ours
I always rejoice at the death of a mass murderer, and Osama bin Laden was definitely a mass murderer. He killed 3,000 people here on 9/11, and he killed more than 300 in August 1998 in the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. So I understand the sense of relief or closure or even triumph that many Americans feel today. But it’s worth grappling with precisely what it is that bin Laden did, and why it is that Americans are chanting “USA, USA”. What bin Laden did was to use violence as a ready tool to advance his purposes.

Obama, War President
In 2008, many voters viewed Barack Obama as the peace candidate, but he’s turned into a war president. On the campaign trail, he promised to get all combat troops out of Iraq by the spring of 2010. Then he extended that to the end of this year, and now his administration is trying to persuade the Iraqi government to sign an agreement extending the presence of U.S. troops there indefinitely.
