Joblessness Goes Down, GOP Goes Apoplectic
After his disastrous debate performance Wednesday night President Obama got some welcome news from the jobs report released Friday morning. The report showed that the economy created 114,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent, the lowest it’s been since he took office. Plus, the figures for July and August were also revised upwards, pointing to a stronger summer of growth than initially thought.

The Pluses and Minuses of Obama’s Speech
I liked a lot of what President Obama said in his convention speech. I liked his defense of the positive role of government. It was reassuring to hear him pronounce the three letters, “FDR,” again, which I thought had been deleted from the President’s alphabet. It was great to hear him defend Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security and Head Start. This was my favorite passage in the whole speech:

Victory for Anti-Nuclear Power Movement in the US
Score two for the movement against nuclear power in this country. In June, the federal appeals court for the District of Columbia ruled that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was in violation of the law for failing to adequately assess the environmental hazards involved in the storage of nuclear waste, a point that anti-nuke activists have been making for years and years.
