The Supreme Court’s Absurdist Push to Lift Campaign Limits
The U.S. Supreme Court seems poised to do more damage to our electoral system by lifting the cumulative contributions that someone can make to individual candidates and committees. An Alabama man, along with the RNC, naturally, filed a lawsuit saying that the total two-year limit on campaign contributions was too restrictive.

SOTU: Lukewarm Liberalism at Home, Hypocrisy Abroad
President Obama’s State of the Union Address provided some solace to progressives on some issues, but left a lot to be desired on others. He was right to point out that we can’t keep “drifting from one manufactured crisis to the next”—a good, clean shot at Republican obstructionism on the fiscal cliff and sequestration.

Republicans Take Abusers’ Side on VAWA
It’s amazing to me that some Republicans and rightwing groups are intent on holding up the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. Doing so shows not only boorish insensitivity but also a startling tone-deafness, since Republicans turned women away in droves last November by their Neanderthal comments on rape.

Brennan’s Obscene Testimony at Confirmation Hearing
John Brennan tried to elude his questioners at his confirmation hearing as CIA director. On one question after another, he excreted octopus ink to dodge or obfuscate. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon said, "Every American has the right to know when their government believes it's allowed to kill them.”

The Dangers of Obama’s Cyber War Power Grab
When our founders were drafting the Constitution, they went out of their way to give warmaking powers to Congress, not the President. They understood that if the President could make war on his own, he’d be no different than a king. And they also understood, as James Madison said, that such power “would be too much temptation” for one man. And so they vested that power in Congress.

Obama Takes Some Good Steps on Guns, But What About the War on Drugs?
Pres. Obama came out with some sensible proposals on gun violence Wednesday. By advocating reinstituting a ban on semi-automatic weapons and establishing a ban on high-capacity magazines, he would at least make it more difficult for mass killers such as we saw in Aurora or at Sandy Hook.

America, the Violent: Banning Semi-Automatic Weapons Is Not Enough
I’m all for Pres. Obama’s and Gov. Cuomo’s efforts to ban semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines, but we shouldn’t kid ourselves that this is going to make much of a dent in the gruesome gun death toll in America. Every year, about 31,000 people in the United States die from gun violence. When you examine that shocking figure, a few surprising facts pop up.

Why the “Fiscal Cliff” Bores the Snot Out of Me
Enough already! I can’t take it anymore. I can barely write the words “fiscal cliff” without dosing off. And I’m not alone here. Utter the term to insomniacs and out they’ll go.

'Giving It Away': Obama Caving on Social Security
President Obama is bending over way too far to reach a budget deal with John Boehner and the Republicans. By tentatively agreeing to changing the formula for calculating the Consumer Price Index for people on Social Security, Obama has, in fact, agreed to cut the benefits of seniors. Because the new CPI index doesn’t go up as fast as the traditional measure.
