America's Prescription Drug Addiction Suggests a Sick Nation
The growing taste for prescription opioids in the US is a concern. What is it about our way of life that necessitates such relief?
We Americans really like to pop pills. The Associated Press has just reported that we're increasingly strung out on prescription opioids, with sales ballooning from 2000 to 2010. In some parts of the US, receipts for oxycodone-based products – such as OxyContin, Percoset, and Percodan – surged sixteenfold; hydrocodone-based products such as Vicodin continue to gain solid ground in Appalachia and Middle America.

Indeed, insatiable demand for "hillbilly heroin" – sometimes doled out by doctors who want to legitimately treat pain, sometimes by physicians who want simply to shut up their patients – has prompted pharmacy robberies, and much worse. In fact, so many people have died from medication overdoses of late that they come to exceed car crashes as the US's top cause of accidental death – a first since the government started tabulating such data in 1979, according to the LA Times. This equates to "more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined".
Meanwhile, scripts for benzodiazepines – the class of anti-anxiety drugs including Xanax, Valium, Ativan, and Klonopin – have gone up 17% since 2006 to 94m annually, New York magazine notes. Generic Xanax, which goes by the name alprazolam, has become 23% more popular in that same timeframe "making it the most prescribed psycho-pharmaceutical drug and the 11th-most prescribed overall, with 46m prescriptions written in 2010".
Let's also not forget that one in four American women is on psychiatric medication. That's right – 25% of US women undergo chemical treatment for depression, anxiety, ADHD or another mental disorder. While it's clear that the US has a thing for drugs – which seems both dangerous and disconcerting – what is not immediately clear is why this is the case.
In the New York magazine article Listening to Xanax, author Lisa Miller ponders whether the demands of modern American life necessitate routine benzo use, quoting one expert as saying they "stop a gap that evolution has yet to fill. As humans try to control an exponentially growing number of inputs with which they are confronted, 'our attention becomes less flexible, our minds become more chattering, and the next thing we know, we're frantic'. Humans are ill-equipped to process or accommodate all these new signals." The result? Perhaps "people need a bridge – a pill – between what life doles out and what people can realistically handle".
"... while it would be incorrect to draw a causal link between stress and widespread addiction, it's safe to say that this correlation cannot – and should not – be ignored."
So what exactly do these popular and highly addictive prescriptions do? Well, taking an opioid analgesic benzo anxiolytic makes you feel very good. They don't just relieve pain and worry, they produce psychic euphoria, a sense that the rest of the world has slipped away, especially when abused – perpetuating the potential for addiction. It would only make sense, then, to ask why so many Americans would want to feel this way: what is it about the nation's society and culture seemingly that necessitates such relief?
There are a couple of potential explanations. To begin, Americans live super high-strung lives, but without significant rewards that could potential justify these stress levels. Mother Jones has noted that the proportion of employed people working 50 or more hours weekly has skyrocketed since 1977 (with the exception of low-income men). Also, the US is one of a handful of countries that doesn't enforce weekly time off, paid annual leave, or paid maternity leave. A lot of this work is not compensated. It's not necessarily making people richer, since household income appears to be declining. But people keep up the pace because the employment market is weak, and they don't want to lose their jobs.
Reports indicate that overworked people tend not to be healthy or happy. Centers for Disease Control data have linked overtime with "poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, and increased mortality". And two recent studies have linked long work hours to a higher risk of depression. Stress, incontrovertibly exacerbated by these factors, is "a major contributor to the initiation and continuation of alcohol or other drug abuse, as well as to substance abuse relapse after periods of abstinence", according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. And, while it would be incorrect to draw a causal link between stress and widespread addiction, it's safe to say that this correlation cannot – and should not – be ignored.
The American way of life sounds like it is sick, and drug overuse and abuse might be a symptom of this illness – what happens when existential entrapment and chemical escapism intersect.

Show AllU.S. America is very sick indeed. The source is materialism. You can never be healthy chasing the pot of gold. The massive drug use is an obvious indicator. How about the willingness of millions of citizens to lie, cover up crimes, or otherwise do immoral things to get or keep a job. What about the millions of folks that have on a daily basis spent millions and millions of hours sitting in traffic jams stressing out, breathing poisoned air, while spending half their income on auto's and gas. Our lives are taken from us one day at a time chasing the American Dream. We are so blinded and caught up in winning the game, that most of us don't realize that we are the one's being played.
Yep, that ad for a $35,000 dollar SUV shows it at the top of a mountain or alone on a scenic highway. The truth is many mountains don't have tops anymore, especially if they are accessed by roads. That vehicle will spend 99% of its time in commuter traffic to make the payments. It creates a dependent relationship with corporations such as BP and environment degradation. I would like to see one honest ad and a real depiction of American life.
This is nothing new...at least here in the good ol U.S.
This article frustrates me big time. The author seems to believe that use of benzo type drugs/opiate drugs is a new phenomina.
I discovered the massive use of barbiturates while I was a freshman in middle school. My girlfriend (yeah. yeah...puppy love) was 13 years of age. I had to witness her being beaten as well as her mom, and wind up in the hosital with life threatening bleeding ulcers. AT THIRTEEN years of age!!! Her mother, a olice firearms training instructor, could be seen almost any day of the week with a busted lip, two black eyes bruises around her neck and a bottle of tuinol and bottle of Jim Beam, barely ale to speack because of intoxication.
Daddy was a family man! He wore a nice three piece suit and fancy raincoat while he drove around in the family station wagon demonstrating that he was without doubt the world's best daddy.
Nobody would help this poor lady or my girlfriend. Daddy of course wasn't concerned about my presence. He knew I couldn't touch him. FUCK!!! The police she trained wouldn't help or believe her...yet virtually everytime I went over to their house, Steph was in the bathroom vomiting blood from her ullcer and mom could barely speak a word between the combination of extreme intoxication and bloody fat lip. The tears streaming down her face said it all. (These people had a fireplace in their home with a chimney that rose at one side of their house. The chimney stood about nine feet over the rooftop. I VERY LITERALLY prepared to get one of mom's high powered rifles and hide behind the chimney when dear ol dad got home...then send the fuck to the promised land.
Look, throughout history people have used narcotic (opiates, not what the pigs call the same), barituraes, benzodiazapines, speed, alcohol, and cocaine for the same reason...these drugs produce a brief feeling of well being, whether true or not. They postpone misery if even for just a few minutes. To those that use them for the relief of psychological pain (IMHO much worse than physical pain) the threat of death doesn't matter...they are okay with dieing as who knows, it could e better than life. The addiction is the pain...the drug/alcohol use a mere symptom.
SO, how does our "Christian" society react? They take these people who could care less whether or not they see the sun rise in the morning, dehumanize them by calling them junkies, drunks, scum of society, etc., strip off their clothing and humiliate them by searching every inch of every body cavity, and put them in a cage with killers, rapists, child molestors, etc. until the DA can find time on his busy schedule to give them a "plea bargin" after a terrifying speech of what COULD happpen to them if they don't "cooperate"by accepting the plea agreement. Innocence be damned...that doesn't look as good on the DA's resume'.
Society calls them weak, worthless, and a terrible example for their children, so they also take the person's kids away if they have any, damaging both child and parent...who probably loves the child more than life but is deemed unfit to parent said child because they are in pain and trying to relieve that pain..
As for the dealers who supply said drugs, they are physicians...professionals. They of course know the dangers of said drugs.and the signs of abuse..they just don't care. More money baby!!! During the mid seventies, there were certain doctors who would have lines outside of their offices and stretching for blocks...the lines of course containing college students stressed out by finals and waiting for their very own prescription of "RORER 718" (Quaaludes) a medication originally created as an anesthisia aid prior to surgery.
We have one fucked up society. We allow big pharma to produce drugs that will do everything from stopping the itch of poison ivy to killing pain (without narcotics...studies and stastics show opiate based drugs to be far safer the NSAIDS or other OTC remidies. Only trouble is a ridiculous stigma due to ignorance), tp drugs to grow longer eyelashes (really!) to drugs for itchy skin (side effects can be FATAL!), drug to help him get it up, her to get wet, both to poop when they are constipated and stop the flow when the runs caused y the drug hit, pilsl for sleep, pills to stay awake, drugs for hemmorhoids, drugs to make both of you cum, drugs for being fat, drugs for too skinny, drugs for your dog and/or cat to be free of fleas, ticks, and other parasites, drugs to make you bleed, drugs to make it stop...you get my drift. Yep, a true war on drugs! Too bad thus far a drug for stupid hasn't been invented. However, it is God's calling for us to prohinit opium (made entirely naturally if only the poppie plant is used), cannabis sativa and indica, who both have thus far been proven to be completely harmless yet quite nedically beneficiail, ibogaine which has been found to reset the receptors in opiate withdrawal and identify the underlying psychiatric problem causing the addiction simultaneously, along with many more proven natural remedies. So why are they bad? Can't patent the damed things! Beisdes, apparently there in't enough violent,and financial crime to keep the for profit prisons open without throwing sick, depressed, self medicating individuals who had the rug pulled out from under them as far as decent psyc. care is concerned by good ol Gipper. Whatta guy! A typical conservative just trying to save those of ue who hate our tax dollars thrown away on helping those who need help the most!
In summary I cannot conceive of a major industrianationl (at least ex) that prides itself on human rights and helping others, besides being a "Christian" nation that can be so damned callous, have such a selfish population...in spite of the multitudes facing financial extermination upon the blink of a bankster's eye while having such a stupid and vengeful popualtion against those who they disagree, continuing to exist as a major power. In order to have a successful organization, all of the parts must help each other. We do the exact opposite...with pride!
"This article frustrates me big time. The author seems to believe that use of benzo type drugs/opiate drugs is a new phenomina."
The author is not saying that this is a "new" phenomena, rather that is a GROWING, and increasingly common phenomena.
aussidawg sez: ".studies and stastics show opiate based drugs to be far safer the NSAIDS or other OTC remidies."
Add COX-2 inhibitors to that list. Doctors were willing to prescribe Vioxx even knowing the downside (death), and patients were willing to take it because the doctors were unwilling to prescribe opiate based drugs for long term degenerative conditions. Hell of a choice - be in constant pain and live longer or be pain free with a greatly increased risk of a heart attack.
After Vioxx was taken off the market many patients shifted over to Celebrex, in the same class of drugs. Guess what the side effects of Celebrex are: "Celebrex may cause life-threatening heart or circulation problems such as heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term. Do not use Celebrex just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).
Get emergency medical help if you have chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance.
Celebrex may also cause serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and can occur without warning while you are taking Celebrex, especially in older adults."
Celebrex is still on the market and is used by people without other options. Now, is an opiate addiction really worse than the likely side effects of Celebrex? No.
So where are all these doctors so ready to dole out opiates? I've never run across them.
Your and the previous comments are utter nonsense. The painkillers these people are getting additicted to to are opiates like percoset, not NSAIDS. My own experience on my street in Pittsburgh (two heroin OD deaths) and the hollows of eastern Kentucky (virtually everyone strung out on percoset or oxycodone) are that the opiates cannot even compare in harm to NSAIDS like aspirin or Celebrex - both of which are not even addicting!
pdj412: I'm not sure what you thought I wrote. What I was saying is that the COX-2 inhibitors are worse in terms of the side effects than opiates, but that doctors would rather prescribe drugs with potentially fatal side effects than drugs with the potential for addiction in cases of long term pain management.
Quite right, some come with a FDA black box warning. The side effects can be worse than the indicated treatment.
Great rant, aussiedawg.
Vodka in Russia, pills in America.
What's the difference?
People are self-medicating to escape the insanity, to silence the cognitive dissonance, numb the agony.
I should know. My mother self-medicated throughout her life on a combination of alcohol and prescription 'mood stabilizers' until she was in a dissociative delirium and her bladder -dissolved- killing her!
Stats show that between 3/4s of a mil to a million folks in the US die ea yr from the combo of prescription drug over-dose, alcoholism & smoking [all legal]. Each one alone kills severals Xs more people than all illegal drugs combined including drug-gang killings.
On a related topic- Its curious how all initial reports on Witney Houston's death indicated a deadly mix of prescription drugs & alcohol, but now the narrative has change to cocaine overdose & drowning.
"[W]hen existential entrapment and chemical escapism intersect" you get rich drug company executives, rich drug cartel kingpins, rich private prison owners and rich politicians.
Know this: your fear, unhappiness, despair and depression, your willingness to allow yourself to be exploited all serve to feather the beds of the sociopathic elite. Drop out of their system! Resign from their corporations. If you're dying of a disease of abundance (obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes) because of a sedentary lifestyle and job stress STOP digging your own grave! Material poverty is more often than not the fastest path back to physical health and spiritual growth. Declare bankruptcy, give your car to the repo man and your house to the bank. Let your student debt balloon to the sky and vow never to pay the banks a red penny. Buy as little as possible and when you must buy something, buy used. Found or join a co-op and stop exploiting your own labor. Live in the most modest place you can find that you can grow an organic garden on. Even if you have to dumpster-dive to carry on, do so joyfully because you will have stopped buying their shit and working on their corporate slave plantations. If you're thrown in prison, become the most expensive prisoner in history. Get a library card and read for learning and entertainment. No more corporate entertainment! Cut the cable, the phone, and every other entertainment or other unnecessary service you can find.
Free yourself from their culture of death and bankrupt these parasites!
WOW There is power in what you say, also futility.
This reminds me of the great New Yorker cartoon by David Sipress that shows a woman watching an ad on TV. The caption reads: "Ask your doctor if taking a pill to solve all your problems is right for you."
THE world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
The Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.--
Great God! I'd rather be A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.
by James Russell Lowell
I should have attributed, but I figured most here would know I was not the writer. Actually it is Wordsworth, though.
I've been reflecting on the new interest in "Happiness Studies" at universities, and how these focus on the individual. In the same way that the public school system is being dismantled by applying similar metrics--those based on the individual--so that a host of causative factors can be ignored if not evaded. As if conditions for most these days warrant happiness! Elections a farce, NDAA making any one of us eligible for imprisonment, Social Security on the operating table (or nearly so), social services being cut, home values decimated, job security a joke, access to health care a virtual lottery, etc.
Carl Jung believed in a diffusive layer of knowing he referred to as "The collective unconscious." It's plausible that given the nature of this form of sentience, those who shut out the conscious awareness of all the atrocities being done in their names, along with the dying state of nature, experience low grade feelings of depression as a reflexive result.
The American diet seldom provides real nurture or nourishment. The emptiness is too often filled with faux food filler, alcohol, recreational drugs, and sugar. Because our society is so image-oriented, being overweight is itself, depressing. There is a pervasive hunger that is not filled by lives full of artificial stimuli.
Then there are the economic factors which the author related. Many are stuck in dead-end jobs, told they should be glad to have any job at all as the bar is dropped on all workers as a result of 3rd world competition for what once were our jobs.
I also think that many women who succumb to fundamentalist religion suppress their anger. There's nothing remotely helpful to self-esteem found in ideologies that tell you that you must submit to your husband, that you are to be obedient to creeds imposed on you from outside (male) authority figures, or that an alleged male God wants it this way.
With nature dying, our nation's empire-builders ringing up the karmic tab while robbing the public blind, and much TO BE upset about, it's no wonder that Depression rates are up. Whereas talk therapy once was the means to alleviate angst, our expediency-oriented, Better Living Through Chemistry society encourages people to take drugs for instant cures. Although I thankfully gave up TV about 6 years ago, when I visit others who ALWAYS have THE THING on, I notice that 1 in every 4 commercials touts some new disease and the PILL to cure it (or at least, hide its symptoms).
For some time I've been postulating in this forum that the prolific consumption of anti-depressant drugs is part of a covert social engineering campaign. These drugs silence the anger, effectively quieting the shrieks of those human "canaries" trapped in the coal mines that symbolize Labor's status in America, today.
It's a very difficult phase for those of us who have our senses intact and are paying attention. On a scale of 1-10, any true reflection of The News qualifies as a 9 (out of 10) on the scale that would constitute what qualifies AS genuinely depressing.
We are trying to normalize society with these drugs, except that nobody really knows what normal is. One horrible experiment. Instead of Johnny running off all that energy at school, just give him a drug to quiet him and make him 'normal' like the other kids.

Excellent post, SR.
How about no more wars, 30 hour work week, universal health care, maternity leave for both parents, affordable education, access to cheap clean energy and plentiful water to drink and irrigate with, and healthy food.
I say enough is enough of this present lifestyle, let's take pleasure in life and appreciate our wonderful Mother Earth.
Utopia or Eden, I say. (that apple bite sure took its toll)☺☺
This would put an end to most all the prescription writing.
Medicalization and militarization of our society is pushed and propagandized by profiteers. These two processes are mostly, IMHO, the intentions of a small group of individuals who have a monstrous hoarding pathology duping the populous to indulge in their "products"(war, pharmaceuticals)so as to hoard some more. The statistics in this piece seem to be more of a comment about the severely pathological few among us than society at large.
Excellent article.
The majority of Americans are near their 60s, worked hard all their life and have little to show for it except a sore back and aching teeth. Doctors have very little pharmaceutical training and are inundated with pharma-hype and bribes. Then there's the whole drug guilt and stigmatization that keeps it all hush hush. Methadone clinics in small towns are essential to reduce the harm caused by the Drug Giants. Because next is heroin, and the even more deadly synthetic heroin going ganbusters in Russia right now.
The American dream has become the American drug induced stupor. Continue to pop pills until it either makes sense, or until you just don't give a sh!# any more, (whichever comes fist).
Why is it such a surprise with the relentless bombardment of advertising from Big Pharma that is non-stop during "prime time"? How many of these ads are aimed directly at women? How many ads for seniors do you see that are not for drugs?? And the relentless bombardment of advertising aimed at doctors, as well as the seminars, perks for the medical profession, the caseloads of "free samples" and almost all research now funded by Big Pharma? Why the surprise? Advertising works! Of COURSE we are a nation addicted to drugs. Big Pharma is now trying to get very young children on statins, Big Pharma is now targeting the bereaved after only two weeks. Yes - drugs for depression after only TWO WEEKS of grief. My doctor wanted to dope me up for going through this natural and necessary process. I told him I'd walk more. We promote the problem by blaming excessive drug use on lifestyle or stress instead of those who devote so much time energy and resources making sure we are addicted to their products. THAT's the bottom line.
When Big Pharma got the green light to market their noxious concoctions directly to the public via smarmy teevee ads, I was appalled and horrified-- even when the products were merely allergy medications.
It seemed blatantly obvious that this hucksterism preyed on the most gullible and impressionable consumers-- the same people who used to rush to their doctors with imaginary psychosomatic complaints after learning about them in "Reader's Digest", except multiplied exponentially.
But, of course, this wildly successful marketing soon became a settled aspect of everyday Amerikan life-- another atrocity to which one was urged to become adjusted, or at least inured and habituated.
And I thought I HAD become inured-- until I started seeing those ads for so-called "add-on treatments"-- you know, those secondary meds vital to help the primary meds work more smoothly and effectively.
It's exactly the classic approach of the Evil Pusher on the street we've been warned about for decades, the ones who lure the innocent with cheap thrills and gateway drugs until they've got them hooked, and then jack up the ante.
But when it's practiced as a corporate top-down scheme, it's lauded as a happy confluence of good modern medicine and good business.
"But, of course, this wildly successful marketing soon became a settled aspect of everyday Amerikan life-- another atrocity to which one was urged to become adjusted, or at least inured and habituated."
hey it's not that bad yet. at least the first advert you see in the morning isn't for a suicide pill.

Every time you get a prescription from a doctor, that doctor now has control over you. Prescriptions are all for a limited time which allows the doctor to require you to make unnecessary office visits, have lab tests (kickback in effect here). It has been determined that 10% of all medical bills are "fraud" of one kind or another. So doctors are not exactly the most law abiding and honest people there are. This is from a study made by CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) of the federal government. Or about 250 billion dollars a year for those curious about it.
It may not be the doctors so much as the insurers and hospital-affiliated shared practice groups, which tend to be incorporated and run as for-profit businesses. They each have their own layer of treatment review and authorization and their own standards. I think some of the hassle for the patient, unecessary visits, tests, etc, are ways to discourage you from using your health insurance. The individual doc's that I know all would like to be left alone to practice to the best of their ability, but spend huge amounts of time dealing with "administrative" aspects of their jobs. The rest of it may be "defensive" medicine, mostly imposed by medical lawyers and loss control bureaucrats, not by doctors.
From the AP link at the top of the page:
"Across the U.S., pharmacies received and ultimately dispensed the equivalent of 69 tons of pure oxycodone and 42 tons of pure hydrocodone in 2010, the last year for which statistics are available. That's enough to give 40 5-mg Percocets and 24 5-mg Vicodins to every person in the United States."
the pharmaceutical equation for fractional reserve banking ?
Reminds me of a time when the masses ate porridge. It was thought that protein gave people ideas. As today, the pie was already cut up and thought was controlled. Few could read, education was for the wealthy and books themselves were not available and in Latin.
I too am surprised by the number of people on antidepressants, let alone pain pills. "We the People" have no coping skills anymore. Pills don't change our collective reality. "We" seem incapable of changing anything anyway. If the sh*t hit the fan and "We" had to buck up and fight to survive, most would perish.
Pills may be part of natural selection. If you are dependent on pills, you may become extinct. Nobody is coming along. You will need strength, all your wits and income to survive the coming austerity - post election 2013 (D) or (R).
The is no happy pill.
No, but there are happy schrooms!!!
Well that would be a natural medicine. There are many therapeutic qualities to mushrooms. I have a relief cream made with cloves, bay leaf, arnica (very good stuff), aloe, and Jojoba oil. It is actually for skin but you can use it for other things. It is really something to see healing and how it works.
yes there are happy shrooms, and they're safer than the prescription pills pushed by dr's and big pharma. i don't like prescription meds , but i try to take mushrooms at least once a year. the experience has a noticeable positive effect on mood in the following days and helps me w/ seasonal depression.

{For the second study, slated for publication in the British Journal of Psychiatry, researchers asked 10 people to think about memories associated with strong positive emotions. Participants who had taken psilocybin reported their memories as more vivid compared with participants given a placebo.
Two weeks later, the same people were asked to rate changes in their emotional well-being. Researchers discovered a strong link between participants' ratings of how vivid their memories were, and their well-being two weeks later. They conjecture that psilocybin facilitates access to personal memories and emotions, which may boost mental health.
What's the take-away message? Psilocybin may calm overactive brain regions that contribute to headaches and depression, while enhancing emotional stability. Taken together, both pieces of research point to the chemical as a useful adjunct to psychotherapy, according to Robin Carhart Harris, a researcher who worked on both studies.}

well somebody has to be contrary. it isn't anybody's business except mine, what drugs I take or why, as long as I do not harm anybody else in the process. Rx drug OD sounds more like suicidal ambivalence or elderly drug confusion to me. With street drugs, you can't control dose, so, as expected, OD's will occur. With Oxy, etc, you know the exact dose. You have to work at it to OD on Oxy or vicodin. With 5mg Vic, you would probably have to take 5 x the 5mg recommended dose in one hour or combine with an excessive dose of another neuro-active, respiratory depressant (Xanax? Alcohol? Oxy plus vic, oxy plus lots of diphenhydramine). Even at that dose rate, with timely medical intervention, you could be kept alive and the damage essentially 100% reversed. Buddy of mine just took 7 hits of 5mg vic in less than 12 hours (severe foot injury) and not only was he fine, it wasn't enough to treat the pain. Something about all this smacks of nanny state meddling and second hand moralizing. Walk awhile in the shoes of a person with a herniated disc and tell me Oxy doesn't make his life a little easier.
Yea, they are also euphoriants. So's wine. And alcohol probably ruins for more lives, but we live with it because we believe you have a right to ruin your own life. Or some of us do. Another way of looking at all this, is, in a world this f**ked up, what's wrong with a little euphoria, especially if it is as cheap as these generic, fully covered drugs are. Is it healthy? Not really, but whose problem is that? Anyway, neither is stupidly driving up your planet's atmoshpheric temperature and irreversibly altering the ecosystem that sustains all life. So, frankly, if that ever more likely possible future is keeping me up, savaging my psyche and leaving me with infinite rage and frustration at ASSHOLES whose venality and idiocy I CANNOT STOP, no matter WTF I do, then don't deny me what little mental peace and sense of calm I can achieve by whatever means I may use to achieve it. In exchange I will NOT drive or operate heavy equipment in your neighborhood. Deal?
The standard dose of vicodin for hydrocodone is, 250 mg, 500 mg or more.
5mg hydrocodone/500mg acetameniphen - read the label
Ok, your right, I was thinking of something else.
The problem with any drug is that you build up a tolerance for it, and the same dose you took a month ago with not get the desired effect today. So you will increase the dose again and again overtime. Keep on doing what you're doing and you'll find out soon enough that you may not be able to get off whatever drug you take without severe withdrawal symptoms. And that is the definition of an addict. Otherwise, I believe all drugs should be legal except meth. You can't stop a person from taking drugs-they will get it one way or another.
You should be more circumspect with crap from big pharma's death-labs. Hydrocodone and oxy-contin are chemically modified opiates which were touted as safer, less addictive, wider Therapeutic-Margin (lethal dose high), but frankly you'd be better off taking morphine or it's di-acetyl derivative heroin than er either of these.
However you ease the pain as mankind slides into oblivion matters little I suppose
but I 'd rather meet death with some acuity left; for you the fog-machine?
There's Opium, Kratom, Poppy tea, Tramadol, et al. All opiates can be addictive. When you start needing to increase your dose, you probably need to wean off of them. There's no free ride for a high, but these drugs are not the devil they're made out to be. Some opiates, such as Kratom and whole poppy, have chemicals in them to treat other things. Those who have a tendency toward addiction will likely become addicted to something no matter what.
Thanks for your comment. I know big pharma is run by ruthless bastards who do not give a rat's ass about us, but that's the world I live in. I tend to agree on opiates vs opioids, however, the authorities have chosen to erect the barrier where it is, not where my health, personal choices or inclinations would put it. As for meeting death, I personally know of several old folks for whom morphine almost completely eliminated the pain and anxiety of death by chronic illness. I was around before and after the doc prescribed the morphine, so I know whereof I speak. And the fog machine? I am lucky enough to live near the coast; I love the fog. Does that make me weak? What was it Jackson Browne said? "Don't confront me with my failures, I was aware of them".
This explains everything. Why we waste. Why we're fat. Why we wage war. Why we're bankrupt. Why we're ignorant. Why we have the leaders we have. Why we don't revolt. Happy as pigs in shit.
Required viewing, THX1138, a film by Lucas which is on DVD. The characters are breaking the law if they are drug free. Our military is well on the way to that condition.
Many years ago, I saw a therapist who, to his credit, vehemently opposed the trend of supposedly correcting psychological disorders or difficulties with medication.
I wrote this for him:
_______________________
I once told a patient named Sonya
Who complained of extreme anhedonia
"Too bad there's no pill
That might give you a thrill--
If I come across one, then I'll phone ya."
The article and subsequent observations cause me great anxiety and depression The road to understanding these conditions leads to further stress and thus heightened anxiety and depression. Ah, if only I were one of the one billion starving people who have neither the time nor the circumstance to indulge in such existential evils. The burdens of modern man! We persevere thru our suffering one pill at a time.
A question for everyone here? You all agree with the illegalisation of marijuana?
