Enlisting Michelle Obama—and the American Public—to Stop War on Iran
On Friday, March 30, First Lady Michelle Obama received an unusual request at her San Francisco fundraiser. Instead of “Can I have a picture with you?,” one major donor asked, “Will you use your leadership to prevent an attack on Iran?” Kristin Hull hand delivered to Ms. Obama a petition against war on Iran that was signed by prominent women including Gloria Steinem, Alice Walker, and Eve Ensler, and over 20,000 American women and allies.Hull implored the First Lady to think of the military families and veterans who have paid the price of war. Ms. Obama has championed veterans’ issues while in office and for this reason, in addition to her obvious proximity to the President, women’s groups have made her a focus of their peace efforts.

Ms. Obama thanked Hull for her advocacy and said, “Keep up the great work.” As Hull was walking away after her photo with the First Lady, Michelle Obama grabbed her hand, squeezed it and said, “We really need you.”
The petition implores three powerful American female politicians—Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Ambassador Susan Rice and First Lady Michelle Obama—to use their influence to push for diplomacy, not bombing, in US relations with Iran. The next step will be to hand-deliver the petition to Clinton. CODEPINK launched this petition online on March 20th, the 9th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq (coincidentally also on the Iranian New Year, Norooz), with a call from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker. “Nine years ago, I joined CODEPINK in front of the White House in an act of civil disobedience to try to stop our government from bombing Iraq,” said Alice Walker. “None of us could live with ourselves if we sat by idly while a country filled with children was blown to bits using money we needed in the United States to build hospitals, housing and schools. We must not let another tragic war begin.”
Indeed, the writing on the wall looks eerily similar to the lead up to the Iraq invasion in 2003, with the government using crippling sanctions and the media stirring up fear among the public. The millions who marched against war in 2003 did not succeed in preventing an attack on Iraq, but the American public is now war weary and more interested in fixing our tattered economy than getting involved in another draining military adventure overseas. While one recent poll showed that if Israel attacks Iran, 47 percent thought the United States should support Israel vs. 42 percent who said we should not get involved, another poll found that the public overwhelmingly favors a diplomatic solution—69 percent preferred negotiations while 24 percent wanted an Israeli strike.
The CODEPINK petition is designed to increase the visibility of that anti-war sentiment. It was created at the request of an Israeli group, the Coalition of Women for Peace, who modeled their own petition after a call to action from a group of women inside Iran. “I thought it was so beautiful that women from Iran, Israel and the United States were coming together across borders to stop war,” said Alice Walker.
“This petition reminds us that governments don’t always represent their people,” said Dr. Dalit Baum, a founding member of the Israeli Coalition of Women for Peace. “With all the war mongering between the leaders of Israel, the US and Iran, it is the voice of women that reminds us that people will try to avoid war and seek out humanity.”
Gloria Steinem (Click to sign petition)
U.S. feminist author Gloria Steinem has also lent her voice to this effort to stop a new war. “Before the U.S. military attacked Iraq, I joined many activists, writers and artists in signing a call opposing a preemptive military invasion of Iraq,” said Steinem. “We feared such a war would increase human suffering, arouse animosity toward our country, damage the economy and undermine our moral standing in the world. Our fears turned out to be right. Once again we are calling on people to stop another devastating war, and we’re especially calling on women—as we’ve seen from Ireland to Libya, women often have a peacemaking advantage. Let’s hope this time our government listens."
Another cross-border phenomenon erupted recently on Facebook when Israeli graphic designer Ronny Edri posted a photo of himself with his daughter and the message “Iranians We Love You. We will never bomb your country.” Edri and his partner Michal Tamir invited others to make similar images, and were soon flooded with responses by Israelis posting their photos with heartfelt messages. Within 48 hours, Iranians responded with similar expressions of love for Israelis, highlighting images of Jewish historic landmarks in Iran and Iranians who saved Jews during the Holocaust.
Responding to a photo of a worried-looking Israeli mother with her son, one Iranian wrote, “I had experience with war. I was just 10 years old when I went to defend my country from Iraq. Many of my friends died and disappeared. I cannot forget that time in my life. I can understand why you worry about your kids. Your photo reminds me of my mother’s face. I respect you very much. I hope war never happens between our countries. God bless you and all of the mothers in the world.”
Eve Ensler (Click to sign petition)
Maryam Howe, an Iranian living in England, believes the Iranian response would be ever greater were it not for government restrictions and fear. “I know my people don't have access to Facebook because of the government filtering and even if they did manage to have access, they may get into trouble for liking these pages,” she wrote. “I promise they would support this 100%. We want peace and freedom. We ♥ Israelis and all other nations. I adore you for doing such a beautiful thing by starting this page. It's amazing to see how love spreads across our borders.”
Despite restrictions, the Israeli organizers say that in one week, 33,000 Iranians visited the new website they created,Israel Loves Iran., and the facebook page is peppered with comments from Iranians.
This exchange has now gone global, with people around the world—including many Americans—sending in heartwarming videos, photos and messages. CODEPINK is contributing to this campaign by launching a new site, www.weloveiran.org, that allows people to upload their own photo and superimpose a message on the picture, post it to their Facebook, tweet it, and share it with friends. Some of the images will become larger than life when projected on the Capital and State Department buildings later this month.
Faced with the specter of a catastrophic war, groups like CODEPINK are putting pressure on politicians—and their wives—to use diplomacy. But ordinary folks are also going around the politicians by reaching out to each other. As one American wrote on the facebook page, “Politicians and weapons makers cultivate hate to yield more power and earn more money. We, the people, must be the countervailing force that cultivates love for humanity and prevents them from taking us to war.”
Visit www.weloveiran.org to add your photo and signature to the global call for peace with Iran.

Show AllMichelle Obama: " We really need you". We really, really, need you Michelle to sign this petition.
Keep up the good work CODEPINK......thanks.
Now if we only had a President who had the courage to stand on the side of peace. I wonder who he has killed today with drone attacks?
I get what ya mean, however....the reality of the matter is that it has ZERO to do with "courage." US presidents are actors who work for the shadow govt that OWNS them, installed via our phony "elections." To suggest as you've done implies that the grim specter of american fascism could somehow dissipate if only 'we' could 'elect' better (more "courageous") politicians, when that is simply not the case. At all. Electoral politics is dead, which is why the establishment makes such a big show of it - keeping The People focused on the 'sports' mentality of phony 'elections' helps stave off what's already begun: the inevitable era of when the police state is forced to reveal its true colors.
*edit - wow, 90 min later & still no public display?
This is taking naivete to a whole new level by thinking that Michelle Obama would have any say in a foreign policy decision that will be made in Israel with the United States and her husband blindly following their lunatic masters in the chosen state. The corrupt congress has already made war inevitable with resolutions that even forbid direct dialogue. War is always the first option for a corrupt and aggressive America.
YES! YES! YES!
I wonder how the forum's handful of JEW haters will try to invert this message? And Joe Hope, please curb your impulse to impugn the reputation and motives of Gloria Steinem with your allegation that she once worked with or for the CIA.
This article reminds us that government elites invoke violence and lousy economic policies in our names; but their actions seldom reflect the will of the people.
I am going to join Code Pink as a result of this... is there anything more beautiful than seeing would-be enemies join hands and set down arms (i.e. armaments)?
The Course in Miracles calls this the At-onement: and it states further that ANY time two former enemies reach a new agreement the ground is made Holy there. Sane and just persons wish to see that harmony and holiness returned to the "Cradle of civilization," whereas those sworn to Mars rules, or intoxicated by the hate speech and flawed thinking characteristic of any fundamentalist (patriarchal) religion dangerously conflate war with holiness itself! Holy War is the most dangerous oxymoron, right on the list after Military Intelligence.
Here's a link to the Mike Wallace interview of a very young Steinem discussing her Company involvement:
It begins at 3 miutes 40 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQUl4etN_Yg
I have previously provided overwhelming proof that Gloria Steinem worked for the CIA organizing US youth participation in The Austrian World Youth Congress as head of a CIA front organization. This is a well known historical fact, and one that Steinem openly admits to. So it is much more than "my allegation." I would think that you are intelligent enough to understand this.
When this covert operation was revealed by Ramparts magazine in 1967,
Steinem told The New York Times that she approved the Agency's role. "I was
happy to find some liberals in government in those days who were far-sighted
and cared enough to get Americans of all political views to the Festival."
The only question regading Steinem is whether she ever quit the Company. I think the evidence points to her maintaining her CIA contacts, and that she used those contacts to get CIA funds for MS Magazine through foundation fronts like Ford and Rockefellr Foundations. Her lifelong asociation with
Ms. Magazine's first publisher was Elizabeth Forsling Harris, a CIA-connected PR executive who planned John Kennedy's Dallas motorcade route.
When N.Y. Times reporters confronted Steinem with documentation of her
connections to the CIA and CIA funding of her various activities, Steinem
remarked that she got caught because CIA wasn't tricky enough. Hinting
that CIA should have made better use of front companies, Steinem remarked:
"The CIA’s big mistake was not supplanting itself with private funds fast
enough." By the time Steinem founded Ms. Magazine, the CIA had learned
how to funnel money through private individuals and corporations
Gloria Steinem dated J. Stanley Pottinger for nine years.
Pottinger was in charge of sabotaging civil rights enforcement at the
Justice Department (he was assistant attorney general) under President
Nixon and President Ford. According to Donald Freed & Fred Landis in
their book "Death in Washington", J Stanly Pottinger also helped to
cover up the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Orlando Letelier.
I reject your contention that I am falsely maligning Steinem. Please take the time to reserach this matter, and you will see that Steinem's CIA involvement is a fact, not an allegation.
What did you do/get involved with in l967? Wasn't it a VASTLY different world back then? I'll grant you (I have dial-up so I can't watch the link you provided) that the l967-on record-comment is true. Nonetheless, it's quite a leap to then tie that to the founding or principles of Ms. Magazine. I'm sure you realize, Joe, that the right wing is well-known for its hatred of feminists. If you are as committed to Left-leaning values as many of your often intelligent forum comments attest, then why the relentless need to stain this woman's reputation? She was a Playboy Bunny for a short time, too; and while I find that rather repugnant (in how it caters to sexist presumptions about women AS sex objects), I look at her larger contributions to gender equality and find that more worthy of commendation.
"Let s/he without sin cast the first stone."
The issue is what is she doing for humanity today. Again, her involvement in l967 may have nothing to do with what she is today, or what she currently stands for. No TRUE feminist would advocate for war, cover for black ops, or support any form of violence used as an Ends Justifies the Means modus operandi.
BTW: Take someone like the former Senator Byrd. He had once been a staunch racist, but then amended his views and turned out to be one of the only voices to stand up against (illegal forms of) government over-reach in the run-up to war against Iraq.
45 years ago... for Ms. Steinem... that's digging pretty far back for dirt.
Actually I planned not to discuss the Company Gloria kept (keeps?) in this thread , but you challenged the historical accuracy of my previous statements in this regard. I'm an historian by training and avocation; so i'm careful about sources and veracity of evidence.
I didn't leap to conclusions regarding the funding behind Ms magazine based solely on Steinem's early CIA connections. The fact is MS magazine received funds from a lot of Company associated sources. That fact is difficult to square with Steinem's revolutionary image. Steinem has spoken publically and specifically about high level media connections such as C D jackson an executive in the Time Inc media empire while working for CIA Front, the Independent Research Service.
See the Mighty Wurlitzer: How the CIA Played America pg 144 - viewable at books.google.com
Steinem's meteoric rise to fame occurred just a few years after the 1967 interview I linked, and it occurred due to heavy patronage towarsd her by CIA connected media Heavies. A recent NYT article expolored the "annointed " aspect of Steinem's fame without mentioning the obvious and well established CIA/Media connection, but then that'd be the pot calling out the kettle..
My gripe with Gloria Steinem is not that she was a leading feminist. I support gender equality in the workplace - equal pay for equal work. My gripe is that she was a mole, has never aplogized for her role in the CIA or condemned the CIA in any way. In fact Ive only encountered positive statements about the Company from Steinem. I've encountered nothing that indicates she ever quit the Company, and I've looked into it a bit.
Infiltration and coption of the Left is the Company's stock in trade, as you know very well. You have a bit of a blind spot here for Steinem, and your counterarguments ignore the evidence of Steinem's lifelong company connections. It seems to me that you are really not interested in determining the true extent of Steinems' CIA involvement.
Also, since Alice Walker is mentioned in this article too, you might be interested in the fact that Steinem recruited Walker and arranged CIA financing for Walker's particiaption in the Vienna Youth Festival.
She also recruited and financed Zbignew Brezinski's ticket. Funding for Michael Harrington was withdrawn when he stated his intention to critique both communism and capitalism. He bought his own ticket and went anyway.
This was a high level propaganda op that was monitored by Cord Meyer. The cover organization, the Independent Research Service, was led by Steinem..
The rabbit hole is very deep, and it is naive to think that feminism is somehow immune to Company Corruption.
The government infiltrates any organization that has clout but that is a given.
The CPUSA was controlled by many infiltrators and was funded by the Rothschild bank as told to me in person by Gus Hall its President and friend of my Dad.
I am going to have to get the new book about the assassination of Mary Meyer, Cord Meyers wife who was another of JFK’s lovers and was about to blow the lid off the Warren Commission but after she was killed probably by company orders, her Diary was confiscated and burned by her other CIA friend Jesus Angleton who was the head of CIA counter intel which was orchestrating the cover up and Oswald's connections to the CIA.
So it looks like Mary Meyer was another brave women who had CIA connections and there were others who were killed because they knew too much.
I'd like to read that Mary Meyer book also, It appears she turned JFK onto acid.
Interesting tale re Gus Hall. I have a new agey friend who is of the Communism was funded by Rothschilds, but I always thought he was a bit loony on that point.
Yep, I learned a lot by once in a while asking the right questions when I got the chance.
I am glad you are into getting the truth out about the War Machine and it is bigger than just the CIA which I am sure you know too.
A bit of research [IE: Wikipedia & Google] shows that Karl Marx was a relative of the Rothchilds & Marx's wife was from an aristocratic family related to Winston Churchill's family.
The familial relationship between Marx and Rothschild is not a close one.
The accusation that Marx was a part of a secret conspiracy of Jewish bankers is a little hard to accept, as it reeks of bigotry. Bakiunin put forth the thesis in a particularly anti-semitic tirade.
There's not a lot of hard evidence for this theory, and it tends to be a trademark ofthe radical right, radical anti-communist crowd.
I am open to any new evidence here, and thought Jim's comment re Gus Hall was interesting in that regard.
Siouxrose, I am glad you are joining Code Pink, one of the best activist organizations.
I applaud the idea and its implementation. I doubt, however, that Michelle Obama would work to change her husband's mind. After almost 4 years in office, she remains solidly behind him in everything. I cannot impute any human decency to Michelle Obama, because she has bloody hands in the Middle East, too.
You can't live with a sociopath for decades without either already possessing the same sociopathic tendencies or developing them. Take Killery Cinton, for example. While first lady she pushed health care, but as secretary of state she pushes war and death care.
I hope this works. But when or if it doesn't, I hope the organizers will go into full embarrassment mode against Michelle, because as the principal cheer leader for Barack the Baby Killer, she too supports mass murder of Muslim children.
If Michelle declines, CodePink should march around Sidwell Friends School, where the future baby killers go to school.
Tom & Jmowery: Perhaps one has to be acquainted with media (directly), or the entertainment world to understand that devices like what Code Pink is seeking to do are done more to energize "the masses," then to change the minds of women born to the mold of Athena, goddess of war and battle.
Do you honestly think that women with the intelligence of an Alice Walker expect someone like Hillary Clinton to suddenly grow a conscience? If a public official is presented with an unimpeachable, morally sound idea they are put in an embarrassing position. They can no longer claim that "they didn't know." This material (or public act) enters into the Public Record. It makes future deception and inhospitable acts & decisions far more transparent.
Did you think that Michael Moore expected to change the NRA when he managed to get in a quick interview with Charlton Heston?
Today's elites are so empowered that writers, teachers, activists, and ordinary concerned citizens have limited access, not to mention power. To use any channel as a vital means to get The Message through should be applauded, instead of chastised. Or do you think writing in this forum, added to your professional jobs is having any impact on a VERY sick status quo?
If you understand "Solidarity," what's with the critiques on people sincerely trying to make a difference? SUPPORT their efforts!
Athena:
Goddess of wisdom, war, maths, the arts, the crafts, strategy, skill, law, justice. IOW, goddess of what is generally considered civilisation.
Yeah, doesn't fit your simplistic worldview does it?
It is the acme of arrogance for an earthbound facts-checker like you to pigeon hole my broad mystical beliefs as a "simplistic world view." Have YOU ever had an original thought in your entire life? ONE element key to Athena, as the female most aligned with Zeus and the entire construct of the patriarchal order of men, is that she DENIES being born of a mother to instead insist that her origins derived from her father Zeus's head. THAT is the criteria that interests me about Athena and it is VERY relevant to my mentions of mythology in this forum.
I think of you as a human gnat. Your emotions, if they exist at all, are as tightly gripped as a bloodless girdle. If you got any colder, you wouldn't have a pulse. I would imagine all merry making would stop the instant you stepped into a room with any social event taking place.
Good night, and good luck, Rfloh... s/he who argues FOR pornography and a libertarian view of freedom, while telling me that I have a simplistic world view. Study Astrology for a few years and then come back and tell me how simple it is. It's cosmic calculus you trans-gendered clone. And people with a far broader intelligence than yours have called it brilliant.
Nope. This has nothing to do with being an earth bound fact checker. And your repeated posts on athena do reveal your simplistic world view, and your intellectual flabbiness.
Athena, and her mythology, is fascinating. For example, the story of her sprining full grown out of Zeus head. That can be seen various ways. Some people, such as the misogynist Freud, have argued that makes her "weak". Feminist thinkers have argued otherwise.
I might be a bloodless gnat. You, OTOH, are intellectually lazy and flabby. Too lazy too think. If you want to talk about mythology, you really should read MUCH more. Mythology can often be viewed various ways.
"Or do you think writing in this forum, added to your professional jobs is having any impact on a VERY sick status quo?"
The women involved in this action are, for the most part famous for being famous or living off past laurels, granted to them by the corrupt CIA infiltrated academy and entertainment complex.
Your attempt to draw comparisons between these fame merchants and more humble organizers and activists is twisted. It entirely misses the point and denies the vast evidence of intense connections to powerful and covert corporate capitalist agencies.
The Revolution has only ever been won when women and men work together. I think Steinem has spent a life in service, overt and covert, to the opponents of mass revolution. The Company = The Banksters = the MIC = MediaInc. It is my contention that Steinem was primarily a member of the company controlled media and also informed on militants.
Joe, can you name an organization that is free of Spies and government connections?
Hunting for moles is a tough job with little results as Fear is their power, but LOVE is the power they can’t handle.
Right. Appealing to three women who are clearly sociopaths themselves is going to change the world. When will the valiant members of Code Pink wake up to the realization that demonstrations, street theater, and "asking" for justice aren't going to cut it? These kinds of stunts do little more than give people the false impression that the Left is actually doing something to move us forward. We need millions of people in the streets to take over the nation's capital as well as the strongholds of corporate media, not just march around in colorful costumes.
Right. As if that's going to happen any time soon. The American Sheeple are in a deeply self-absorbed and self-imposed slumber. Until the Middle Class is starving in the streets, nothing is going to change.
Too bad that such cynicism stands in the way of anyone doing anything. Give credit where credit is due. Have these people done nothing worthy of your approval? When is the last time that you disrupted a Congressional hearing, to then be dragged out and arrested? CODEPINK members have done this countless times.
Of course we need millions of people in the streets, and of course appealing to Michelle Obama and Clinton seems futile, but isn't it worth, publicly confronting them?
Putting the onus on CODEPINK, and those who have set up this website, that it is either millions on the street or their efforts are meaningless is not rational. Also, admonishing CODEPINK and others' actions cited in this article as giving "people the false impression that the Left is actually doing something to move us forward" us unfair.
I suggest perhaps you contact CODEPINK, to start coordinating those big protests.
"CODEPINK members have done this countless times."
And the right-wing neocon status quo continues. So CODEPINK'S actions, unfortunately, have done nothing other than to give dinero to the injustice system for bail dinero and they have a "criminal" arrest record.
Petitions (which politicians couldn't care less about) and getting arrested these days accomplishes nothing for the positive (and that includes Occupy getting arrested).
What do you propose be done? Give us something to chew on! We need your intellectual "bread".
Arrest, try & execute the international banksters. Sieze the Capital, the Land & the means of production. That's all that's going to work on the level of popular rebellion at this pont, and all the 1% social engineering is poised against such class based organization.
Under various propaganda fronts - anti-communism, War on Terror, the fake econimik krisis, Austerity- they've made trillions on the blood and sweat of the world's billions.
Of course I hope the pink stunt works but that's irrelevant in terms of assessing the likliehood of success - which is very low to none, and the presence of all the usual moles is none to promising.
Good points Hue! Whether Michelle then challenges Obama or not does not negate the value in challenging those in power face to face. It forces those in power to actually have to look in the mirror at their own actions. Making them a bit uncomfortable is a step towards change (or at least it makes it harder for them to continue). This particular CodePink action is one one action that also raises awareness of an issue. There are lots of other actions, eg., OWS, boycotts, that challenge those in power and get policies changed. And that is what it is going to take to get change, challenges from different angles, different interest groups, and different degrees of magnitude. The US government's crackdown on OWS, jailing of whistleblowers.. and many other similar things shows the Government is on the defensive so the challenges are serving a purpose.
I agree completely. You live in reality and not in some dream state of delusions. Those that don't live in reality will predictably describe your post as "cynicism"---when actually you're just being realistic but they don't want to hear it---because they still live in some form of Denial and wishful-thinking. Gracias.
So tell me, oh dweller of reality: what do you propose, what have you done, and what have you achieved? Since you dwell in reality, you clearly can educate us wishful thinking denialists?
Gracias.
You seem to want to make me the topic. This is not about me and what I have or have not done. I'm not the topic. Ms Obama and Codepink are the topic. (But your "attack the messenger" routine is noted...and is so predictable).
LOL. ROFPML. Read your own posts. Your post began by attacking the messenger. If Codepink's credentials are relevant, then, so are yours. If you can attack Codepink's credentials, then so can people attack yours.
So, shall we do a compare and contrast of Codepink's credentials vs yours?
What exactly have YOU done, out of curiosity, compared to what Code Pink have done ? Are you organising the "sheeple" to go out on the streets to take over the nation's capital as well as the strongholds of corporate media?
Taking over the nation's capital? Yeah, that's likely to happen with H.R. 347 (the anti-protest Trespass Bill HR-347) in place now and signed by Mr Hopey Changey. The "sheeple" can't be organized when they are not paying *any* attention to what is happening. They are too busy texting and/or on their mobile phones. They couldn't care less about any of this stuff. If one were to tell the "sheeple" about any of the articles on this site, one would get a blank stare followed by "I'm whatever" (and then they would resume their texting).
Right. IOW, you can't organise anything. Can't do anything.
The queen is the power behind the throne.
I've been observing people since childhood, and even before I knew anything about astrology, started forming analogies in my head about the way people behaved based on the months in which they were born. Although there are exceptions, Leo men lean heavily on their partners; and just as the FEMALE lion goes out for the hunt (while the male lion enjoys the fruit of that labor), he sits around.
Meanwhile, there is no sign more coldly ambitious than Capricorn; and that is Michelle's sign. Again, while there are exceptions to every astrological sun-sign trend, Capricorn requires status and power the way the bee requires honey.
I think she IS the power behind the throne, and she could well be a "Lady Macbeth" type... that is, the one who encourages bloody behavior for its sheer political expediency. I'm sure, as parents, this couple wants a good future for their own children; yet to sacrifice so many millions of other children to:
Chemically polluted regions
Wars, unending
Bank graft that reduces the basic quality of life across the board
Nonsensical programs directed at decimating Public Education
Murdering hope
Etc.
Remember, we all answer to the law of karma at the level of our complicity... and power. The average citizen who believes Fox news and casts a vote for a murderer is hardly as accountable as are the elites who shape false messages, seduce the masses, and then KILL (in vast ways) in their names.
It's about the nature of scale... added to motive.
"I think she IS the power behind the throne, and she could well be a "Lady Macbeth" type... that is, the one who encourages bloody behavior for its sheer political expediency."
Could be. She was a corporate lawyer. However, she planted an organic garden...
They mulched dead Afghan children for the organic fertilizer.
" I think she IS the power behind the throne ". That has been my thoughts also. You may be right on target Sioux Rose!
"think she IS the power behind the throne, and she could well be a "Lady Macbeth" type..."
Alternatively, she is just another spouse of a politician. Like any other spouse of a politician anywhere in the world. Nothing especially special.
It never ceases to amaze me how people in positions of power sometimes don't use them, even tho their apparent mandate is one of peace, children, environment--the progressive issues. One would be the major churches of the world. Another would be Michelle Obama. I have often thought: "Where is she?" I don't even know what issues she stands for (such as Nancy Reagan at least saying "Just Say No" to drugs) . I often rationalized that Ms. Obama has shown bravery enough simply by living, with her daughters, in the White House, when there are so many people still racist enough in the US to hate that very fact. However, it likely would not endanger her and her family any more if she were well-known for certain issues. I had no idea that she was working on veterans' issues. C'mon Michelle. You could do a LOT of good.
Michelle Obama has gone on 16 family vacations (10 with Barack the Baby Killer) at a cost of more than $1 million for each. Each of her vacations costs more than the average worker earns in a lifetime.
There tends to be this weird and idiotic idea , as demonstrated here, that the spouse of a politician should somehow change the politician's view to be better / kinder / nicer.
In reality that almost never happens. We can speculate why it never happens, but it almost never happens. So, at best, campaigns such as this, are not meant so much to convince Michelle Obama, but rather, to simply use her name to try to convince others.
Also, there seems to be this strange idea among "progressives" that somehow Michelle is this "progressive" heroine.
This action reveals a fundemental flaw of mainstream US feminism, the assumption that gender loyalties will trump class allegiances in the US. In this case, Obama's complee allegiance to the ruling class, the bankster & militarist overlords, is unquestionable.
It also illustrates that feminism is primarily a movement of well off, well educated women who are either ignorant of or disdainful towards a class oriented political movement.
There are exceptional feminists with a class oriented revolutionary approach. Michelle Chen and Barbara Erenreich spring to mind, but US mainstream feminism is thoroughly bourgeoisie and thoroughly Company Controlled.
JOE: Millions of sincere women wish for gender parity; yet you reduce this movement to an effort to besmirch feminists. You do not want to share power, it's as simple as that. Who gets published, Joe? I've battled all my life to get my work in print and with rare exceptions, it's been an uphill battle all the way. For you to take the evidence of those who do get published as indicative of the full spectrum of any philosophy or movement is at the least, short-sighted. In other words, just because Steinem may have been an opportunist and used the resources at her disposal, doesn't mean she represents ALL feminists. Nor do I necessarily agree with your characterization of her.
Is the media liberal?
Is Rachel Maddow or Obama a socialist? Vaguely Progressive?
Words are being used to destroy TRUTH these days, and the labeling process is a huge part of that strategy.
First of all, what gives you the authority to decide what feminism stands for? In the past, in EVERY article exposing the crimes SPECIFICALLY leveraged against women, things like gang rape and repulsive sex crimes, you sought to make the conversation about MEN or crimes done unto men. There was a profound lack of sensitivity exhibited.
Just as Democrats compose a spectrum of viewpoints, as to a lesser extent is true of Republicans, you CANNOT speak of feminists in a narrow way designed to paint them as what they are not. There are scientists who believe in nuclear power, even after Fukushima. And I use that as an analogy to suggest that short-sightedness can impact members of ANY group. Perhaps some feminists are not as hip to the class conflict as you think they ought to be, but for many of us, the key issue is gender parity.
The first cleaving of the clay of mankind took place when warrior clans overwhelmed more peaceful societies and established male superiority. THAT was the germ from which emerged all later forms of hierarchy. Thus the prized Marxian class conflict came AFTER the beginnings of hierarchy.
You want to correct the problem through economics, and like other otherwise intelligent males in this forum (added to a few odd females who remind me of Gator football cheerleaders) fail to look at the causative factors that gave way to unequal advantages (acess, rights, privilege) in the first place.
NO MAN would allow for the types of inhibitions to HIS sexuality that women have been forced to endure for centuries. And now that we've had access to The Pill and other forms of birth control, that an insidious patriarchal-religious movement is rising to turn this nation into a locked down Christian Theocracy, you fellas try to down play what's going on as some form of peripheral symptom of Identity Politics. Either you're a closet sexist who wants "the little lady in her place," or you're missing the boat on this one.
The fairest analysis is one that connects ALL dots, rather than dismissing issues of VITAL concern to at least half the population.
In another thread some right wing poser promoted the ruse that The Left is "just as intolerant" as the right. As if there is any equivalency between the well-organized right wing groups that would STEAL liberties from others, and those tasked with defending their own rights.
In any case, I appreciate your thus far civil discourse on this matter.
I agree that Steinem does not represent all feminists.
I agree that women will define feminism, but I was criticizing the approach taken by the feminists highlighted in this article, and arguing they make a "mistake" typical (not acknowledging class dynamics) of the feminist movement.
My ascribing that mistake to the feminist movement in general is clearly my opinion, but it is one shared by many working class women.
I support access to contraception and abortion. I noted in another post that the current political attacks on women are part of a crypto-fascist fundementalist movement that is also taking over the military and the police in the US. So I don'think I missed the boat on this one.
I don't know which came first, classism or patriarchy, but to me the effects of classism are mostly unacknowledged, and are more damaging and insidious than gender based discrimination. The US has made progress against sexism in the past four decades. In regards to classism, the US has gone backwards during that time.
Finally male sexuality has also been inhibited and twisted by Christian Theocracy, particularly but not limited to gay male sexuality. Dismantling the beliefs, laws and institutional bias that stand in the way of gender equality is important, but it is not the whole struggle. When feminist arguments and actions are contrary to the struggle against classism, I think that it is important that it be noted, analyzed and addressed.
Good evening, Joe: I appreciate your calm response. If you provided this info on Steinem before, I honestly missed it. I have to tell you... if it's true, I am in shock. Same thing with Alice Walker. And to tell you the truth, we live in an era where so much dis-information is masked as truth (the climate change debate and the well-paid legion of obfuscators is a case in point), that I have to wonder about the sources you provide. It could all be true, but like I said, it's news to me and rather shocking at that. I'd need to look further on all this...
Thank you for the sensitive comments about women's rights. I don't think what most feminists seek should be regarded as a competitive issue with class rights. The debate on that matter could go on long and hard. I choose to quit here, and thank you for taking the time to lay out your points and perspective. I'll give the points you raised more thought.
We certainly live in a culture of pervasive dishonesty, denial and deception, but the Steinem stuff is pretty well documented. The rumor that she dated Kissinger is not true, but stems from a picture of them at a political//elite social event.
The critical pieces of evidence are
The 1967 Ramparts magazine exposes on Company infiltration of the US student movement.
The Mike wallace interview dates from that year also.
There is a NYT interview with Steinem about the Company in the Feb 21, 1967
The 1975 Red Stocking Press Expose
This is by not a comprehensive list
I have to look moredeeply at the Ms Magazine funding issues. From previous studies, i can see that the pattern is there, It's just a matter of tightening up the documentation. .
Google around a bit on Gloria Steinem, CIA. There is no doubt about her leading the Independent Service for Information (which is its own irony in the conext of our discussion of disinformation), and she admits to knowing it was Company. Also there is no doubt that she made valuable connections in the upper echelons of the media while working for the company-she's talked about it publicly.. There is also little argument that Steinem's status as "leading feminist" was a kind of media annointment/creation. There is also no doubt that Steinem has has a lot of complementary things to say about her involvement with the CIA.
The conclusion that Ms magazine was a creation of Company media assets is not proven beyond a doubt but there is a lot of evidence that points to company funding and promotion.
There will always be heroic women revolutionaries, but Steinem is not one of them.
Don't follow leaders...
BTW- I believe Red Stockings Press hailed from your neck of the woods back when a certain NoFla college town was referred to as The Berkeley of the South, Red Stockings plays a central role in unmasking Steinem's Company Connections.
Yeah. An article by an anti-war org that is using the fairly standard tactic of appealing to a politician's spouse (who is seen, mistakenly IMHO, as sympathetic to their anti-war message) demonstrates the fundamental flaw of US feminism.
*rolls eyes*
Liberal feminism has its problems. This article doesn't demonstrate those problems. Neither does your poorly thought out post. By then, that's not unexpected. Every single one of your post on feminism tends to be poorly thought out and poorly argued.
