Nearly All US Groups Oppose Obama's 'Individual Mandate' for Health Care
President Obama’s mandate to buy private insurance was born in the rightwing Heritage Foundation, and has not found a home among any actual constituency of the public – white, non-white, Republican, Democrat, college-educated or not. A new poll confirms that “Obama has based his plan on a scheme that nobody likes – even his most loyal supporters.”
When one takes a cursory look at where various groups in the nation stand on President Obama’s health care legislation – now under review by the U.S. Supreme Court – it appears the country is split along party and race lines. A new poll conducted by Princeton Research Associates shows 75 percent of Democrats support the Obama position, and 86 percent of Republicans oppose it, with so-called independents evenly split. The racial divide is similar. Sixty-eight percent of non-whites “strongly favor” or “somewhat favor” the overall health care law, with only 18 percent opposed. Whites are far more divided, with 33 percent favoring Obama’s law, and 47 percent opposed.
These numbers are, however, heavily influenced by what people think is in the law, and what side they think they should be on, based on their larger loyalties. It is doubtful that majorities on either side of the issue actually understand most of the law’s many provisions, some of which do not go into effect for several years. Therefore, many of the respondents are using the poll to register their broader preference for or against the incumbent president and his party. It is no surprise that majorities of whites and super-majorities of Republicans oppose ObamaCare, as Republicans call it, and more than two thirds of non-whites and three-quarters of Democrats support Health Care Reform, as Obama calls it.
However, most people do understand the central element of the law, the “individual mandate” that forces nearly everyone to buy health insurance from private companies, or face a fine. The new poll shows that no significant constituency supports Obama’s individual mandate, with only 28 percent of the overall public favorable to the scheme. Even non-whites, two-thirds of whom claim to support Obama on health care in general, balk at mandatory purchase of insurance from private companies. Fifty-three percent of non-whites give thumbs down to the individual health insurance mandate, as do 71 percent of whites. More Democrats are opposed to Obama’s individual mandate than favor it: 48 to 44 percent. And Republicans are off the scale in opposition, at 15 to 1.
So, if the core of the Obama health care plan is the individual mandate, as both the administration and the Republicans contend in their arguments before the Supreme Court, then Obama has based his plan on a scheme that nobody likes – even his most loyal supporters.
There’s another interesting aspect to the new poll. It shows that only a hard core of one in four people want to tamper with Medicare as the Republicans do, with around two-thirds of all racial groups opting to keep the program the way it is, with the government paying doctors and hospitals directly for the service they provide to seniors.” Taken together, the poll indicates strong support for the core elements of the U.S. healthcare safety net, and rejection of private schemes, including Obama’s mandatory purchase of insurance from private companies. It appears that most Americans would rather have the option of dependable, direct health care paid for by the government – which was the case at the beginning of 2009, before Obama unveiled his health care scheme, when 60 percent and more of the American people favored single-payer health care. But Obama maneuvered them into a something they hadn’t asked for, and which, three years later, nobody wants.

Tragically, these "larger loyalties," which should have historical meaning, have none when it comes to Obama, the wolf in sheep's clothing. Blacks and other minorities have a historical right to believe that the first black man in the white house would support their causes.
Even though people know things have gone terribly wrong over the last few years, decent people want to believe that the first black man in the white house struggle hard against the evil ones, only to lose against superior might.
But of course, Barack the Baby Killer always intended to screw the 99%. He told all of us he intended to screw us during the 2008 campaign, but most of us heard only what we wanted to hear.

You can trace the true nature of this former "communiy organizer," going back to his political machine days in Chicago. He was enlisted by the Regular Democratic Organization (Da Machine) to run against progressive Democratic US Rep. Bobby Rush -- a former Black Panther (who recently wore a hoodie in the US House of Representatives.)
Obama's greatest qualifications were that he is light-skinned and got along with white people, especially the realtors who were paying his way. Rush blew Obama out of the water in the nearly all-black, all poor Democratic District.
But the realtors and party knew what they were doing. They awarded him with a state senatorial seat, then made him a US senator. When he ran for Prez, he re-asserted his allegiance to MONEY and the 1% by genuflecting before the Zionist lobby and turning on Bishop Jermiah Wright, a true progressive.
You can accuse Obama of many things, but those who would accuse him of waffling on this issue or that are flat-out wrong. He's always known who his owners are. As dey say in Chicaguh, "You could look it up."
Another good artilcle! Health care is a human right.
"Blacks and other minorities have a historical right to believe that the first black man in the white house would support their causes."
On what basis do "Blacks and other minorities" have such a right? Did the "landed aristocracy" have a "historical right" to believe that FDR would "support their causes"?
O'Bamba was allowed to sit on the throne only because he has a deep voice which conjures up street thug imagery in the people's brains. Such imagery must flourish, if banksters, warmongers, and torturers are to flourish.
Before reading Mr. Ford's incisive piece, I noticed the same thing operating in this forum, where a centrist like LANISTA hates the Obama-care as much as a Progressive like me does, it's evident that this is ONE issue that binds both "sides" together. Because there's a consensus AGAINST the bill--primarily the mandate that we must, on threat of law, purchase the faulty insurance--the media noise machine has to work overtime to produce subtexts and peripheral themes to reinforce the party lines and make sure consensus shows up for what elite interests eventually fix upon.
And this quote (taken from the article) bears repeating:
"These numbers are, however, heavily influenced by what people think is in the law, and what side they think they should be on, based on their larger loyalties. It is doubtful that majorities on either side of the issue actually understand most of the law’s many provisions, some of which do not go into effect for several years."
Indeed...
I'm all for healthcare for all, paid for by taxes. But I'm confused. Is the Insurance Industry against the mandate? I would think not as they are guaranteed much more $$$ in premiums.....
I ask this because most of the right wing is screaming about this and they are just usually pawns of the insurance/business class.
Insurance companies AND the right wing are BOTH in favor of the mandate. The individual mandate originated with the right wing Heritage Foundation during the 90s when it was introduced by Newt Gingrich and nobody outside of Wall Street and DC liked it then. The mandate resurfaced when Mitt Romney incorporated in into Massachustetts' Romneycare in 2006.
Congressional Republicans didn't vote for Obamacare because the Democrats provided all the votes needed to pass it. Why would the GOP vote for their own program that most Americans hate, as long as the Democrats are voting for it and taking the heat ?
The right wing pushed the suit that is currently being heard in the Supreme Court because they can claim in the 2012 election that they are fighting for the majority of voters who don't like the mandate, while knowing the Court's corporate-friendly record assures that the mandate will be upheld.
Thanks Ray
I admire Glen Ford. There doesn't seem to be anything that BO does that fools him.Early on,he saw BO as a charlatan.
Fascinating that Republicans oppose their own plan by 15:1. But would they feel the same if a Republican president and congress had passed this bill?
It is consistent that the --by far most people-- have no influence in American "democracy".
This article has me thinking the following about Obama and his party in general when it comes to health care. Health care is supposed to be the BIG ISSUE to help Democrats. Even then, in all these years I've seen the party promise better and affordable health care for more Americans, I still can't tell for sure what's with the Democratic Party although I've given up trying to figure them out anymore. If for all these years they somehow foolishly believe that starting out with a simple 30 page single payer plan is like pushing for a flat tax and oh so "libertarian", then I dunno if or when they'll ever get it right on health care. By the way, I'm assuming that they're ideally not playing "fail to win" for their personal business and ambitions.
Nobody cares about policy, either side. It's only about "winning," most particularly in an election year. Reds vs blues. Donkeys vs Elephants. It's the Roman Colosseum, being played out over and over. And yes, like the games in the Colosseum, vast numbers of people are dying in the process of these "sporting" events. No one cares. Who's on first? What's on secon.....
I agree with what you said. Whatever the Demos think they're "winning", they seldom come close. If they seriously believe that passing single payer will make them "losers to health care forever", they're deluded given that they're making themselves lose on purpose.
Congratulations, it appears all of obama bashing from fox news and Sarah's lies about death panels and pre-existing conditions, is paying off, the Gas and Oil Party portion of the supreme court will repeal Obama care, now we will have fucking nothing! Not single payer, no plan to build from, just fucking nothing! Both parties the same? Every GOP justice just as the GOP house and senate voted against any kind of health care or insurance assistance for the American people, but more tax breaks for the top one per cent and subsidies for corporations.
Is O'Bamba going overboard coddling the Heritage Foundation? Wow! Look what a liberal vote buys us these days.
If I worked for the Heritage Foundation, I would plant someone to discredit liberals on their websites, but not such a boob as you.
The mandatory insurance clause was, as i have come to understand, written by Ron Wyden, a man who will never again get my vote, no matter what else he does in his career. I voted for a Progressive advocate of single-payer to replace him.
Black Agenda Report -- Yes!
Glen Ford -- BRAVO!
Before this thread fades into oblivion, I just to thank Glen Ford for yet another brilliant piece in which he deconstructs the First Black President and his multiple and serial betrayals of all Americans -- and African-Americans, in particular -- for all the reasons he sets forth in this piece.
When Barack Obama took the oath of office in January 2009, the nation was in the throes of a decades-long national health care crisis, but among African-Americans the situation was (and remains) even more dire, to wit:
Office of Minority Health & Health Disparities
http://www.cdc.gov/omhd/populations/BAA/BAA.htm
Factors contributing to poor health outcomes among African Americans include discrimination, racism, institutionalized poverty, diminished employment and education opportunities, disproportionately high incarceration rates, cultural barriers, and lack of access to affordable comprehensive health care, since many African-Americans have no public or private health insurance and a growing number of health care providers won’t accept Medicaid patients due to low reimbursement rates.
Barack Obama has done little or nothing to materially improve the lives of African-Americans since taking the oath of office, and there is no reason to believe that anything would change if he is re-elected in 2012.
The faint trickle from Obama-Trickle-Down Economics has dried up -- expect more disappointments.
