Philanthropy is the Enemy of Justice
The world's poor are not begging for charity from the rich – they're asking for justice and fairness
It's strange that at this week's World Economic Forum the designated voice of the world's poor has been Bill Gates, who has pledged £478m to the Global Fund to fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, telling Davos that the world economic crisis was no excuse for cutting aid.
Human beings should not have to depend upon a rich man's whim for the right to life.It reminds me of that dark hour when Al Gore, despite being a shareholder in Occidental Petroleum, was the voice of climate change action – because Gates does not speak with the voice of the world's poor, of course, but with the voice of its rich. It's a loud voice, but the model of development it proclaims is the wrong one because philanthropy is the enemy of justice.
Am I saying that philanthropy has never done good? No, it has achieved many wonderful things. Would I rather people didn't have polio vaccines than get them from a plutocrat? No, give them the vaccines. But beware the havoc that power without oversight and democratic control can wreak.
The biotech agriculture that Lord Sainsbury was unable to push through democratically he can now implement unilaterally, through his Gatsby Foundation. We are told that Gatsby's biotech project aims to provide food security for the global south. But if you listen to southern groups such as the Karnataka State Farmers of India, food security is precisely the reason they campaign against GM, because biotech crops are monocrops which are more vulnerable to disease and so need lashings of petrochemical pesticides, insecticides and fungicides – none of them cheap – and whose ruinous costs will rise with the price of oil, bankrupting small family farms first. Crop diseases mutate, meanwhile, and all the chemical inputs in the world can't stop disease wiping out whole harvests of genetically engineered single strands.
Hollwood producer Hickman Price's fleet of tractors were kept working day and night, and the upshot of such sod-busting was the great plains dustbowl of the 1930s.Both the Gatsby and the Bill and Melinda Gates foundations are keen to get deeper into agriculture, especially in Africa. But top-down nostrums for the rural poor don't end well. The list of autocratic hubris in pseudo-scientific farming is long and spectacularly calamitous. It runs from Tsar Alexander I's model village colonies in 1820s Novgorod to 1920s Hollywood film producer Hickman Price, who, as Simon Schama brilliantly describes in The American Future, "bought 54 square miles of land to show the little people how it was really done, [and] used 25 combines all painted glittery silver". His fleet of tractors were kept working day and night, and the upshot of such sod-busting was the great plains dustbowl. But there's no stopping a plutocratic philanthropist in a hurry.
And then there is the vexed question of whether these billions are really the billionaires' to give away in the first place. When Microsoft was on its board, the American Electronics Association, the AeA, challenged European Union proposals for a ban on toxic components and for the use of a minimum 5% recycled plastic in the manufacture of electronic goods.
AeA took the EU to the World Trade Organization on a charge of erecting artificial trade barriers. (And according to the American NGO Public Citizen, "made the astounding claim that there is no evidence that heavy metals, like lead, pose a threat to human health or the environment".)
Now, the EU is big enough and ugly enough to have fought and won the case. But many an African country lacks the war chest for such a fight, and so will end up paying for the healthcare of those exposed to leaky old PCs' cadmium, chromium or mercury, instead of embarking on, let's say, a nationwide anti-malaria strategy. Bill Gates himself may not indeed have known about what the AeA was doing on Microsoft's behalf, but the fact remains that if a philanthropist's money comes from externalizing corporate costs to taxpayers, and that if Microsoft is listed for its own tax purposes as a partly Puerto Rican and Singaporean company, then the real philanthropists behind these glittering foundations might be a sight more ragged-trousered than Bill and Melinda.
Free marketeers will spring to the defence of billionaire philanthropists with a remark like: "Oh, so you'd rather they spent all their money selfishly on golf courses and mansions, would you?" To which I reply: "Oh, you mean that trickle-down doesn't work, after all?" But the point is that the poor are not begging us for charity, they are demanding justice. And when, on the occasion of his birthday, a sultan or emperor reprieved one thousand prisoners sentenced to death, no one ever called those pardons justice. Nor is it justice when a plutocrat decides to reprieve untold thousands from malaria. Human beings should not have to depend upon a rich man's whim for the right to life.

Show Allin the first steps toward civilisation as we know it, charity meant that quality of universal Love. alms, now that meant tossing coins to the poor. i agree with mlk, put the Love back into the recipe once and for all ending the mechanisms which create poverty.
justice and fairness
the other night i heard obama call for, "economic justice from the TOP on down".
step #1: drop the superiority complex!
"step #1: drop the superiority complex!" -- hummingbird
I agree! And, well said!
Economic justice will arrive from the bottom UP.
Death to capitalism.
Did you also catch in oblahblah's SOTU his reference to himself being a member of the rich, elite 1%? Amazing for a man with a "new" name and no past, no job history, and no money of his own in the not too distant past, to have come so far, so fast.
How strange for a man slathered in orange makeup to exhibit such a superiority air whilst reading the words of others from a teleprompter.
"Would I rather people didn't have polio vaccines than get them from a plutocrat?......Human beings should not have to depend upon a rich man's whim for the right to life."
Rich men don't have whims. Everything is well calculated in advance. As to the polio vaccines, poor Jonah Salk must be rolling in his grave. It was always his intent that it be freely available to all.
The vaccines are free in the sense that there is no patent on them so they can be freely reproduced at will, but the manufacturing, packaging, transporting, and administering of them costs money. Very few people can afford to work for nothing and certainly not in the huge numbers needed to perform all those tasks on a global scale.
I grew up during the polio epidemic. When the vaccine came out no one had to pay for it. I think our government used some of it's tax revenues to manufacture and administer it. Is that not the true reason to have a national government? To provide for all citizens not just the 01%? What happened did we "privatize" it's production? Who did that benefit?
Many years ago I read a comment from a Digger in San Fancisco who went to a "free" concert and saw a sign saying that the concert was made possible by funds from a large corporation. His comment was that if the concert had really been free, the corporation would not have required the presence of the sign.
Excellent and right on point.
These are not even philantropists, just pure old school capitalists/imperialists. Philantropy is in these cases just another name for "white man's burden".
Bill in particular is fucked up scum. I have some small understanding of how much money they got just out of our (small Eastern European) educational system through more or less sophisticated corruption (yep, this wouldn't have been possible without our own idiots and parasites of course - you can find traitors and dumbass technocrats everywhere), so every time I hear of his "charity" actions, I get mad as hell. His company robs people and then uses the same money to force his own dumbass technocratic shit on them. And of course he's not even very good at technology ffs - just listen to any of his roadmaps and prognostications from the times he was leading MS, you'll understand how incredibly provincial and short sighted he is.
EXCELLENT article, Robert! Well said.
foundations exist to evade taxes - simple as that - just ask the rockefellers, carnegies, fords, and of course the blood sucking gates
bill gates is trying his damndest to vaccinate africa in order to kill them off
""The world today has 6.8 billion people... that's headed up to about 9 billion. Now if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by perhaps 10 or 15 percent."
http://tv.naturalnews.com/v.asp?v=A155D113455FAC882A3290536575C723
only, bill says, if we do a really great job...
gates' father was head of planned parenthood
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H._Gates,_Sr.
"The Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Inc. (PPAF) is a related organization which lobbies for pro-choice legislation, comprehensive sex education, and access to affordable health care in the United States.
Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of reproductive health services in the United States, which include contraceptives and abortions, among other services.[3][4] Contraception accounts for 35% of PPFA's total services and abortions account for 3%; roughly 10% of PPFA's clients obtain abortions.[5][6][7]
The organization has its roots in Brooklyn, New York, where Margaret Sanger opened the country's first birth-control clinic"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_Parenthood
as a social movement planned parenthood is a direct descendant of the eugenics movement. they had to change their name after the nazis somewhat diminished the brand name by killing millions of jews, slavs, gays, union members etc as they were inferior. all with the funding of the rockefellers
so eugenics became planned parenthood
"As a social movement, eugenics reached its greatest popularity in the early decades of the 20th century. By the end of World War II eugenics had been largely abandoned.[10] Although current trends in genetics have raised questions amongst critical academics concerning parallels between pre-war attitudes about eugenics and current "utilitarian" and social theories allegedly related to Darwinism,[11] they are, in fact, only superficially related and somewhat contradictory to one another.[12] At its pre-war height, the movement often pursued pseudoscientific notions of racial supremacy and purity"
"Today it is widely regarded as a brutal movement which inflicted massive human rights violations on millions of people.[15] The "interventions" advocated and practiced by eugenicists involved prominently the identification and classification of individuals and their families, including the poor, mentally ill, blind, deaf, developmentally disabled, promiscuous women, homosexuals and entire racial groups -- such as the Roma and Jews -- as "degenerate" or "unfit"; the segregation or institutionalisation of such individuals and groups, their sterilization, euthanasia, and in the extreme case of Nazi Germany, their mass extermination"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics
so we have good old bill jr and melinda, with their side kick warren boom boom buffet evading taxes and funding their favorite pastime of killing off minorities. a goal they share with the rothschilds, the rockefellers and the other foundations
what a guy!!!!!!
*facepalm*. This is one of the most idiotic posts I have seen on CD. You're stringing a bunch of excerpts from various articles together. It doesn't prove your point, it just makes you look pathetic, in that if that is the best evidence that you can come up that (Gates') support for vaccination is eugenics.
You beat me to it! Thank you. You were more polite than I'd have been.
Bill Gates-- "our man!" Hardly!
I don't like Gates. Nor MS. But if the best you can do is throw runny shit at the wall in the hope that something sticks, all you're doing is ending up with shit on yourself.
Planned Parenthood is a saving grace to many women needing quality medical care at a sliding "pay as able" scale in our community.
Of course every so oftern the idiots that claim to be pro-life *and pro death penalty) go out and block their driveways to prevent abortions.
Our community Planned Parenthood clinic doesn't provide abortions, merely low cost but high quality healthcare for the women who can least afford it.
The very people who protest this organization are the ones who are pro-death! I wonder how many cases of breast or ovarian cancer would have gone un-diagnosed without the help of the clinic?
And no...I am in no way affiliated with or for Planned Parenthood. I'm just one who has had a loved relative's life saved by early diagnosis of breast cancer by them
who do you work for
the rockefellers or gates
or some ngo
i notice no substance in your comment - just, as noted below in a response by rfloh, "runny shit" - he wrote that even while throwing runny shit at me
obviously an progressive group
take your vaccines bro, your mind is a vast emptiness
Hi there MMD.... I, regrettably & wrongly, criticized you once before..... however........ I heard a statistic recently that if humans continue to reproduce at a bit BELOW the current rate, that in 1000 years there would be over a trillion humans on earth.....or even more! (I forget the exact number, & haven't done the math myself...) C'mon! You've got to be kidding, or you're not seeing the forest for the trees....
In Brooklyn, NY, where I live, many of the poor black boys who grow up without fathers become muggers.... THAT"s a good thing? I'm all for restricting (compassionately) people like those parents from having kids (hard as that might be to implement...).
A news story on MSM cbs-am the other day told about a teenage girl who now has this (great!) opportunity to box in the olympics, as woman have not been allowed to before. She was very excited about the opportunity saying that her original (& now disfavored) goal had been to have ten kids by the age of 22. OMG. Raising a kid (I have two) is said to cost a good $250,000 or so these days, & there's no way many of these young black kids from single parent households - or raised by their grandmothers - can achieve anything near that.
We need PP or other institutions to help poor people to raise kids in a decent environment... 'course we need lots of improvements all over the place, but poor people having lots of kids just ain't gonna cut it any more..... Hey! Wilson Picket was like the 14th kid in his family, & how much richer are we all to have had his great music!..... But that was soooooooooo 1930s-40s......... times have changed.
Perhaps BG & his ilk aren't approaching this issue the right way, but humans having all these babies, well, it's gonna end badly......very badily..... & by the way, next time you see a sorry old-before-his-time black man living out on the streets (as I see often in nyc), you can ask your self: where was society when that guy's parents were bringing that wretched soul into the physical plane....
Funny How some supposed 'liberals' have a way of making racially tinged [if not out-right racist] statements sound 'reasonable & respectable'. IMO you have showed that medmedude's argument about a possible hidden agenda behind PPFA may have some validity- whether that was you intent or not. Your whole screed boils down to PPFA does an important service of limiting the births of Blacks, Brown & the poor who would otherwise become criminals & derelicts [shades of eugenicist Margret Sanger's 'Negro Project']. But WOW- It's such a good thing that a Black girl can be a fighter in a brutal blood sport, because otherwise she would have mothered 10 kids by age 22! Yet to accomplish such a goal she would have had to average 1 live births/ yr for 10 yrs- Starting AT AGE 12- an extremely unlikely feat without unnatural methods [IE: fertility drugs] being used- especially considering that one of PPFA 'accomplishments' is that currently 52% - 56% of all Black & 30% 35% of all Hispanic pregnancies now end in abortion [PPFA is in the abortion & birth-control BIZ {just look at PPFA's web-site info}- PPFA does NOT & NeVeR has helped any poor people raise their kids- PERIOD]! So why throw out such a red-herring- Because perish the thought of a Black woman having 10 more Black poor kids- in 'your' World! Thus apparently your solution to poverty & associated ills is to ELIMINATE Poor People! - Rather than eliminating Econ & political policies & a social environment that CAUSES People to be &/or Remain Poor!
You also conveniently ignored the fact that some population models show that the World's population is likely to stabilize at 9 - 11 Billion by the end of this century & from there even naturally slowly decline. - Thus you screed about a TRILLION+ mainly Black, Brown, poor & so-called 3 World people over-running the planet in a thousand yrs is just another phony scare tactic to justify your population control screed against the Black, Brown & the poor!
" [IE: fertility drugs] being used- especially considering that one of PPFA 'accomplishments' is that currently 52% - 56% of all Black & 30% 35% of all Hispanic pregnancies now end in abortion [PPFA is in the abortion & birth-control BIZ {just look at PPFA's web-site info}- PP"
this stat doesn't mean much of anything without context. Ie what is the rate of condom / contraceptive use among african americans, hispanic americans, the american population in general, other races. And of course what is the abortion rate for everyone else, and for other races. And the birth rate, the population growth rate for everyone.
and amateur boxing isn't a blood sport.
The stats of 52% - 56% of all Black pregnancies & 30% - 35% of all Hispanic pregnancies terminating in abortion can easily be derived from PPFA own stats for abortions by ethnicity [for whites its about 9% - 9.5%]. IMO: Rate of Contraceptive use per ethnicity is far less significant to this discussion than the fact that 75% of all PPFA abortion [& contraception] clinics in the US are in / near Black & Brown neighborhoods even though Black & Browns folks together = only 25% - 29% of the US' population.
Your opinion is that Boxing isn't a blood sport. Fact: Muhammad Ali is generally considered the greatest heavy-weight boxer in history. Yet he has been stricken w punch induced Parkinson's disease since his early to mid 40s [some even say since his late 30s - He just turned 70] which has effectively rendered him speech-less even though his used to be known for his out-spokeness- such that he was once called the 'Louisville Lip'! Perhaps you should review the 3 fights between Ali & the recently deceased Joe Frazier & IMO most would agree that boxing is a potentially BRUTAL affair- even for 200+ lb men- let alone women!
Take some reading comprehension classes. I said AMATEUR boxing is not a blood sport. Should i repeat that? AMATEUR. AMATEUR. AMATEUR. You clearly knoe absolutely nothing about boxing. Ali's health problems are from his pro days. There is a huge difference in the violence between amateur Olympic boxing and pro boxing. They require different skill sets. It is why a boxer who wins gold ag the olympics does not necessarily become successful at pro level. Take some reading lessons. And your argument about 200lb men let alone wome is even more idiotic. Boxing is MORE, i repeat, MORE dangerous for 200 lb men, since a 200 lb man hits much much harder than a 120 lb woman or a 120lb man. One punch from a 200 lb man can easily knockout another 200lb boxer, whereas one punch knockouts are much rarer at lower weights. Being heavier and bigger does not really provide additional protection to the brain.
and contraceptive use, and overall birth rates do matter. You are selectively using stats.
Amateur Boxing requires completely different skill sets than professional boxing??!! - Humm!- Ali's career began as an amateur / Olympic Boxer, as did Joe Fazier, George Foreman, the Spinks Bros, Sugar Ray Leonard, Evander Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr, Oscar De La Hoya, etc, etc, etc...- They all started as amateur & Olympic boxers & went on to become famous Professional fighters - So it would appear that the skills set of amateur fighters & pro fighters are VERY Closely related!!! And I'm fully aware that most amateur / Olympic fights last only 3 rounds max- but a whole lotta of damage can be done in 3 rounds OR Less ala: George Foreman's demolition of Joe Frazier & Ken Norton both within 2 rounds or Mike Tyson's demolition of Michael Spinks in just 1 round!
The stats I'm talking about are real & verifiable [even from PPFA's own data] & IMO very pertinent to the point(s) being made. It's left to you to find verifiable data that you feel might be of some importance.
Please, stop. Please. You took a single sentence, misinterpreted it and provided a set of completely irrelevant examples to support your badly made point. You are just embarrassing yourself.
What atomsk said. You're just making yourself look like an utter fool.
"Ali's career began as an amateur / Olympic Boxer, as did Joe Fazier, George Foreman, the Spinks Bros, Sugar Ray Leonard, Evander Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr, Oscar De La Hoya, etc, etc, etc...- They all started as amateur & Olympic boxers & went on to become famous Professional fighters - "
Yes, some of the greatest ever boxers, were good at both amateur and pro boxing. That doesn't disprove my contention that they require different skillsets. There are many great pro boxers who were not all that sepcial at amateur level, Manny Pacquaio for example. Similarly there are many boxers who are great at amateur level, Audley Harrison, who then struggle at pro level.
"The stats I'm talking about are real & verifiable [even from PPFA's own data] & IMO very pertinent to the point(s) being made. It's left to you to find verifiable data that you feel might be of some importance."
Nope. Any fool can throw around stats. Without some context, (raw) stats are meaningless. For example, if you say that the median income of the US is 40k. That is meaningless, without some context as to what kind of living that 40k results in. It is meaningless, without some context as to what median income in other countries is. I
Gah. Your hypothetical is meaningless mental masturbation. Birth rate continues to fall and the rate of population growth is slowing. More importantly, and ironically, people who talk about population from an environmental standpoint don't seem to realize that at that growth is only possible if there are sufficient resources (in the short term). It there isn't enough space or water or food the growth does not happen. Which is why for example as population density goes up, birth rate goes down, ie birth rates are lower in dense urbanis areas compared to sparsely populated rural areas; if you are living in a tiny apartment you rapidly hit the point where additional kiddies are no longer possible . That is why extrapolating current growth rate for thousands of years or any number of years is very simplistic.
Huh? Duplicate post?
Philanthropy is capitalism's lame answer to socialism.
The philanthropic capitalist partially assumes a function better performed by a properly run socialist state, while ensuring that his name is prominently displayed.
The philanthropic capitalist is at liberty to choose the object of his generosity and to curtail his generosity at will, whereas a socialist state is obligated to continuously provide for the people as stipulated by its laws.
Bill Gates, and other philanthropists spotlighted by the media, are being used as advertisements for capitalism.
You are so right!!!
Bill Gates 'interests' in Vaccinating all Africans & Green Revolution 2.0 [via Monsanto's GMO mono-crop seeds] in Africa may sound 'innocuous' & a great humanitarian jesture to some- but I ask the question what does a shrewd white yuppie billionaire have in common w poor Black Africans- or even poor Black Americans for that matter? Has he even ever been to Africa, beyond a quick excursion for a quick photo op? IMO an insight into Gates real motives in his drive for vaccines & GMOs as his solutions to Africa's disease & hunger problems- is to look at his interactions w the US' urban Black & Brown communities- via NCLB / RTTT / Charterization of Public schools.
The Gates Foundation is part of a consortium of Billionaires IE: The Gates [MicroSoft] & Walton [Walmart] families, Hewlett Packard Corp, etc- which has put up $1,000,000 for charter initiatives in various Public school districts [IE: LA] - which may sound like a lot of money but is a small investment [IE: chump-change] for these Billionaires. Multi-billionaire Bill Gates can easily finance $1,000,000 all by himself - but his share is likely no-more than $200,000 - $250,000. I'm unfamiliar w LA schools so lets take Chicago's CPS Schools- where RTTT 'deformers' Obama, Arne Duncan & Paul Vallas are from. There are 675 CPS schools- which went all in w MicroSoft's Windows Server platform in 2005 - to the exclusion of other server platforms [IE: Novell]- thus conveniently eliminating MicroSoft's competitors. At an average of two 25 seat servers per school costing $4000 ea = $8000 - plus maybe another 50 - 75 seat licenses at $40 - $50 per seat = another $2000 - $3750 [round off to $3000]. Thus Total Microsoft Server sales per school = about $11,000. Plus another $350 per PC for MS Windows Desktop & MS Office = [@ 50 - 100 PCs / school] - $17500 - $35000 per school. Multiply Xs 675 schools = $7,425,000 + [$11,812,500 - $23,625,000] = $19,237,500 - $31,000,000 worth of Microsoft product sales to CPS- not including installation, training & on-going tech support- For a $250,000 Investment! To me this Looks like a lucrative biz deal [= BIG $$$ = a return of about 100Xs on investment], in the guise of phony so-called 'Philanthropy'! And this is the most obvious return on investment, I have no idea how much Gates stands to secretly gain directly from charterization of public schools & Corps that administer & train for standardized testing, etc.
Thus Bill Gates Track Record is that of a shrewd & ruthless Business-man / Free-marketeer as much or even more so than that of a nerdie techie guru! IMO: His African vaccine & [Monsanto] GMO seeds campaign- is likely a shrewd marketing ploy disguised as humanitarianism! Furthermore just because Gates is MicroSoft's Wiz-Kid, Does NOT Mean He Knows JACK about Education [especially for inner-city Black & Brown school kids], Medical & Public Health Issues &/or Agriculture, especially in Africa & 3rd World Countries!!!
So, in your opinion, African people dying of malaria is a good thing then?
And what does public school districts and computers have to do with vaccination, and eugenics?
While this guy's writing is pretty convoluted and generally all over the place, his instincts about Gates are imo kind of right. He is simply a short sighted technocrat who sees everything as a machine. I don't think he has some kind of "evil agenda" - but he might as well, considering that he seems to be acting on a set of technocratic totalitarian principles. Which means that he does occasionally happen to do good (from his money that he has basically stolen), but in general, the processes he unknowingly serves progress towards a techno-fascist order - which might as well include eugenics in the long run, regardless of his own drives and opinions about it.
His ideas to me seem to be typical engineer-type ideas, rooted in Taylorism, with a bit of Skinner on top (for example, he explicitly said that knowledge that can't be measured isn't real knowledge - and he didn't even seem to understand what he himself meant with this). Add to this his ideas on geoengineering or population control - all of these are basically technologies that enable centralisation of control over some of the most important human activities. His ideas and technologies are - afaik - all large-scale, externally imposed ones, whose implementation basically hinges on his ability to violently force it down people's throats and they're morally justified simply because he thinks he knows better. None of them are "democratic" - they don't allow individual choice, where some freely-chosen individual sacrifice leads to a higher common good. No, what he does is almost always the violent technocratic solution: he goes in and forces a restructuring of life (reproduction, climate, education, whatever) on people without giving them choice. He simply knows better. A typical short-sighted, self-absorbed, egotistical - engineer. Not even a particularly good one btw.
Your Quote: } 'So your opinion is African people dying of malaria is a good thing...' {
First of all I really don't appreciate you trying to put words in my mouth to deliberately misconstrue what I've said. All because you decided to BUTT into my response to someone Else [not even you] who made some ridiculous & insulting racially tinged statements- to justify a population control agenda for Blacks- & basically said that PPFA was part of that agenda!
So then you decided to Bevis & BUTT In - maybe because you felt the need to defend PPFA & amateur boxing?... by implying that Amateur boxing is NOT a potentially Brutal sport [I'm fully aware that it's generally not as brutal as Pro Boxing & has more safe-guards] -&- then made the RIDICULOUS Assertion that the skills for amateur boxing is totally different than that for Pro-boxing [thats like saying the skills for playing NCAA football is totally different than that for Pro football - DUH UHH]??!! When the point wasn't even about Boxing AT ALL - It was really about that other guy's racially charged statements!!! But apparently you missed the real point because you were too busy hurling Smart-ASSED Insults- which till now I let pass. But NOW you have the GALL to try to put these words in MY Mouth: 'So your opinion is African people dying of malaria is a good thing...' You've picked on the WRONG ONE!!!
IF you're so DENSE that you can't comprehend my points about Bill Gates, then read what Atomsk & sLiMsHaDy posted below - they seem GET IT!
FYI:There other approaches to Malaria eradication than the dubious [if not suspect] goal of inoculating all African's w an unproven Malaria vaccine- IE: window screens & mosquito nets, improving [or even installing] sanitation infrastructure, draining swamps & stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, & using natural mosquito predators, etc...
Back to the PPFA: When police over-patrol Black & Brown neighborhoods & their 'Stop-&-Frisk' policy targets are 85% Black & Brown folk [who together only = 26% - 27% population] - some may call that 'Good' Police work & 'Community Policing'... - I call it Racial Profiling for the crime of 'Driving While Black'. So when 75% of PPFA Abortion & birth-control clinics are in / near Black & Brown neighborhoods [again they together = only 26% - 27% of the total population] - resulting in 55% of all Black & 33% of all Brown pregnancies being terminated by abortion- am I supposed to apply a different standard & just over-look those facts because PPFA is a darling of 'main-stream' 'liberals & feminists'??? I DON'T Think SO!!! Now If You don't like what I have to say on that matter & you don't know how to Respectfully Dis-Agree- You Best Leave ME Alone!!!
What "this guy" said is strikingly obvious and readily understandable. Philanthropy as Investment with a HUGE return.
The entire post can be summed up thus: philanthropy is not justice. Quite an important point to be made.
Keep a close eye on terminology too. "Food security" cannot really be had without "Food Sovereignty" - monoculture is an atavistic, failed, militarization of nature. It needs to begin to deconstruct itself.
Great insight! Your use of the word "militarization" is brilliant.
Building the Corporate State, one good deed at a time, ain't it great. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Good article, but it's hard to make an argument for justice without challenging the capitalist system that allows these wealthy folks the "freedom" to be philanthropists. If we "fixed" these problems of poverty, disease, etc. through democratic (socialist) means, these rich folk would have no one to pat them on the back and tell them how wonderful they are for "caring" while the rest of us try to survive. Further, they wouldn't have a tax code that subsidizes all their wonderful "caring" parties/events where they can hobnob with other rich people and tell each other how wonderful they are. Further than that, they wouldn't have any excuse for junkets around the world with photo ops showing the rest of us how much they "care."
The system works the same way at home. Rather than fund parks and recreation, pro athletes are filmed visiting poor kids once a year (yes, some do more, but that's not the point!). The schools are falling apart while outfits like Donors Choose fund tiny classroom projects. In California there is a serious debate about using private advertising to keep state parks open. Many well-meaning folks serve meals to the poor and homeless on holidays, but our society refuses to build affordable housing.
An old song that some may still remember includes the lines, "We want no condescending saviors/To rule us from a judgment hall/We workers ask not for their favors/Let us consult for all!" Yes, spare us the charity. We demand justice. But unless we change the system, how do we get from here to there?
Ken Lay, that great innovator from Enron, was the best poster boy for philanthropy that I have ever seen. Defrauding investors, misleading employees, and cheating consumers during the daytime, and mixing with other great benefactors of humanity at various galas and social events in the evening, he exemplified the spirit not just of philanthropy but of the whole approach to life of the Merikan elite.
Very good article. So good that you can even overlook the absurd suggestion that one guy and twenty-five combines caused the dustbowl of the 1930s.
A pretty good article, but it is not broad enough. It completely ignores the problem with "aid" in general, ie not just aid from rich capitalists, but also aid from countries.
Bill Gates and his ilk have stolen their obscene wealth. They have hoarded their loot while babies starve to death, while millions lose their housing, while mothers worry about whether to pay the rent or buy some food, while people eat cat food to survive, while people go without health care..
They have no right to hold on to their billions. It should be taken from them and used to bring food, housing, education, health care and security in old age to others. The nice way to do this is to raise their taxes and introduce a heavy wealth tax and an inheritance tax. The not nice way is to overthrow the rules that they have used to extract and hoard their wealth -- i.e. the capitalist system.
The filthy rich have hoarded their stolen wealth for too long. It's time for the people to take it back.
exactly... well stated, why americans are so reticent to recognize this necessity is the crux of many of the world's problems. ¡Ya basta!
...peace...
It strikes me odd that Bill Gates likes to put his philanthropy behind inoculations.
Hmmmmm
Does it also strike you odd that he puts some part of his philanthropy behind mosquito nets?
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So a rich guy learns that malaria-infected mosquitos that bite sleeping people give them the disease. So he buys a bunch of nets. THAT'S the best you can do for identifying a conspiracy or an awful hidden agenda? BG may not be a saint, but I don't see how this is in the slightest way evil! Perhaps YOU'D like to sleep out in the open in such an area.... I hear malaria's not much fun...
