In the Year of the Protester, Bradley Manning is the Great Dissenter
PRESENT TENSE : IT HAS BEEN an extraordinary year, full of tragedy and tumult: there’s every chance that 2011 will rank with 1968 and 1945 as an era-defining 12 months.
Time magazine has nominated the “protester” as its person of the year, a decision that has generated plenty of ink, but, among the tsunamis and financial crises, it’s true that the act of protest has marked the year out as particularly noteworthy.
Daniel Ellsberg http://tumblr.com/ZX2SYx59ya-EFrom Tahrir Square to Puerta del Sol to Zuccotti Park, people have gathered out of a desire for fairness and democracy, giving shape to world events in a way that few could have predicted on Christmas Eve 2010.
But there is one protester who has been somewhat omitted from the narrative of 2011’s protests, a protester who has been behind bars since May 2010, and whose act of dissent stands equal to all those who sprung the Arab Spring: Bradley Manning, the alleged leaker of US military and diplomatic secrets to WikiLeaks.
Manning’s military hearing began eight days ago at Fort Meade, in Maryland, and the sense of inevitability around the charges of aiding the enemy and violating the Espionage Act makes this trial more about the rights and wrongs of whistleblowing than about determining whether he actually leaked that huge trove of classified information.
Obviously, leaking military and diplomatic secrets can’t be considered a wholly praiseworthy activity – sometimes secrets are warranted and justified.
But Manning didn’t sell these secrets, he didn’t try to profit from them, he didn’t try to find a willing recipient in Beijing or Tehran. He sought out Julian Assange and WikiLeaks with the express purpose of exposing what he saw as global-scale wrongdoing.
There are many critics of WikiLeaks and Manning who loudly proclaim that the leaks endangered the lives of military personnel and Afghan and Iraqi informers, and there is of course some justification for these concerns, even if there is no evidence that anyone has been directly harmed by the leaks. But it is revealing, and more than a little perverse, that so many of those critics never seemed remotely exercised about how these illegal wars endangered the lives of military personnel and Afghan and Iraqi citizens in the first place.
Certain forms of endangerment are worse than others, evidently.
For those who believe that Manning is indeed a reckless criminal, consider for a moment the most obvious parallel to this case: that of Daniel Ellsberg and the leaking of the Pentagon papers to the New York Times in 1971. Is there anybody who doesn’t think Ellsberg is a hero? Unlikely: he’s the patron saint of principled whistleblowing. He risked his liberty to expose and end a heinous war in Vietnam, and faced down the full vindictive might of the Nixon administration and the US establishment in doing so.
Crucially, the secrets Ellsberg was privy to weren’t secrets because they might hand an advantage to the enemy, whomever they might be. They were secrets because they concealed law-breaking and dishonesty on the part of the Johnson administration and military. Without such secrecy, the entire facade of endless war in southeast Asia, and by extension everywhere else, became impossible to sustain.
Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon papers because he knew he was right and the state was wrong. He was vilified then and is praised now for exactly that reason. However just his actions seem from this perspective, it was a lonely path he took at the time.
There are many lessons to be learned from the Manning case, but the most pertinent is the one that we are conditioned to most assiduously ignore, however instinctively we realize it to be true: secrecy tends to be corrosive to those who wield it, and unchecked secrecy, the sort of secrecy that Manning so bravely attempted to challenge, is always a sign that the corrosion itself is what’s being kept secret.
We might hope that a US president who convinced so many that he stood for change might appreciate someone who tried to engender some real change, but it’s unlikely that Manning’s principled bravery will be recognized and rewarded until after he has spent many years and maybe decades in prison.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, Ellsberg said, “Bradley Manning no more deserves to face charges of treason than I did. He no more deserves to be called a traitor than I do, because I am not.”
Manning’s current isolation emphasizes the bravest aspect of his protest: he did it on his own. He didn’t have a crowd wearing Guy Fawkes masks for support or an occupied square full of tents to call home. When the history of these unsettled times comes to be written, Manning’s lonely protest might well be seen as the most important of all.

Show Alldan ellsberg showed up and testified at a CD (civil disobedience) trial of a friend of mine in tacoma in august of 2010. after the press conference i had a chance to ask him 2 questions. the first was, what is the relevance of the release of the wikileaks documents to the american peace movement ? he paused, being a thoughtful person, and replied what peace movement ? what movement for broad social change ? (and in his answer he also scoffed at the notion that any 3rd party as of yet was threatening the legitimacy of the 2 party system faux fascist government). realistically, he seemed to believe that the apathetic american population was unwilling to change - even in the face of committed activists dedicated to putting their own interests on the line.
of course the connections were emerging as we spoke, the manning leaks precipitated the uprising in tunisia, then eqypt, etc... to OWS. the peace movt in america was rejuvenated b/c of the access to the truth.

on this score bradley manning is a hero. daniel ellsberg also receives props for continually putting himself in jail committing acts of CD and for providing legal/emotional support to so many activists around america, who have made that decision to commit acts of civil disobedience (including during OWS).
thank you common dreams for continuing to keep bradley manning in our collective conscience. may he see freedom in the near future...
...peace...
Got any reason for that opinion?
As far as I know, Bradley Manning has not been convicted of any crime. Why then is he deserving of punishment? And he has been severely punished already, to the point of torture.
Civil disobedience derives much of its power from the publicity it receives. When Martin Luther King Jr. led civil disobedience, he did it so as to confront the nation with its hypocrisy, and call on it to live up to its ideals. When Gandhi engaged in civil disobedience, he likewise made every effort to rally public support. I suppose you would have told them to "shut up" too.
Bradley Manning's acts were those of a courageous, obscure young man who could not bear to collaborate in keeping secrets that concealed war crimes and other illegal and immoral activities on the part of the government. All who call for government accountability, all those who demand transparency, should rally to Bradley Manning's support.
Those who really ought to shut up are the people who make themselves complicit in war crimes by trying to cover them up, or by attacking and demeaning those who dare to reveal them.
Stupid? Not Bradley Manning. The stupid ones are those who have tormented him, and those think it is better for an American soldier to keep silent in the face of wrongdoing, instead of doing what she or he can to expose it.
Thank you for your comment, Leezasky.
In our lifetimes, truly courageous persons and their actions are so rare and few. Gandhi (slightly before my time), MLK, Dorothy Day, Daniel Ellsberg, Barbara Lee, Bradley Manning. IMHO, it's a short list.
God bless Bradley Manning.
Merry Xmas. War is over. If you want it. John Lennon.

Yep, BM is no doubt the Activist of Activists.
Now he's going to go to prison.
The MSLeft will generally piss and moan, then will forget about him and go about their mission in life which is backing the democratic/one-party system and getting their little piece of the 1%'s pie.
Godspeed, Bradley Manning. May there be more like him to come.
moonpie...I agree. What percentage of OWS signs are in support of Manning? The so-called-Left has a long history of disposing those who are on the front line. We owe Manning a BIG debt, but the only debt that some focus on is the debt that the banks owe us.
the prosecution and likely incarceration of bradley manning, while appalling, in some ways can be seen as establishing a precedent - although not one that is intended by tptb. if manning is a scapegoat who will serve to "set an example" for all who dare flaunt our most precious national myths (rule of law, etc.), the intense scrutiny given to his actions may well lead to a closer examination of the actions of the nation's elected representatives, including the president, whose illegal behaviors bring about unimaginably widespread suffering and death.

Thank you so much, old goat, for the links.
The American public, in their adoration of sports and their reluctance to engage in any type of critical thinking, cares more about Eli Manning, the quarterback who plays for the New York Giants in the National Football League, than they do about the whistleblower who is named Bradley Manning.
In fascist amerika sports IS the opiate of the the dumbed down masses ! Even worse, now sports has become a massive propaganda, and recruiting tool for the doors of death, aka military recruiters, aka pushers of death !
The American people are as good as everyone else, but they've been brainwashed and patriotically support the worst enemies of mankind (the US military industrial complex). There are many things that contribute to the dumbing down of the American people. Flouride in their tap water, brain numbing chemicals in the food & air, massive propaganda on the corporate news outlets, totally brainwashed school teachers and community leaders. Emotional appeals to their vanity - their leaders tell them that the USA is the greatest country of all and that they are the luckiest people of all. The ruling elite have most of the American people right where they want them. Luckily, people are finally beginning to wake up.
If government secrecy was made a capital crime worldwide, there would be no wars, no oligarchy, no oppression.
Ellsburg's timing was good. People were fed up with the draft, the war and we wouldn't have sanctioned the use of mercenaries. Mannings timing not so much. Almost all of the conditions that worked for Ellsburg are no longer even discussed by ordinary citizens., Today privatization and mercenaries are considered good business by many citizens that don't bother to think. I wish Mr. Manning luck, but I realize he'll probably never be free ever again. Corporate interests won't allow it.
Hey wasn't it great that Reagan fired those air controllers? They got what was coming, and everyone else should be aware what they got is what you've got or will get, unless of course you're a corporation, corporations are not only people they have special priviledges. THEY'RE SPECIAL!
it is not exposure which endangered anyone - it was their willingness to play along with the games of the Masters.
Brianna, thanks for fighting for us, and justice.
I am surprised CD celebrates protestors considering how intolerant you are against dissent against your own party line and quick to ban people!
The crime: the war
The criminals: MIC & USCongress/Corp
The heros: those who stand up and do what's right
The author of this article does not have an understanding of morals or values of human LIFE.
The reaction of the repressive state to these two whistleblowers, separated by 40 years of creeping militarism and fascism, rather highlights our predicament.
Richard Nixon plotted to destroy Daniel Ellsberg, but had to use his secret team to try to do so. Daniel Ellsberg's civilian trial ended with his vindication. As far as I know, he was free until the trial. His case was widely reported by the US press.
Bradley Manning has been held in repressive conditions in a military prison and has undergone torture for almost 2 years. It is a foregone conclusion that he will be found guilty. Only the foreign press seems to be covering his trial.
But people will still claim that "soon" we will be losing our freedoms.
Welcome, backuninvited! I can only guess who you are! Guess Common Dreams is in your bones!

First Post w/CD. I have appreciated CD for some time now, and reading the perspectives from commenting regulars.
A concern I noticed with Mr. O'Dwyer's article was his 'news to me' position that Tehran=China in terms of soliciting secrets about the U.S. Isn't this affirming the decades of stereotyping of Iran by the West's religious fanatics, and isn't it new news, and really not a valid point?
My question relies on a premise that the CIA along with Reagan and Bush(VP) aided the Islamic Revolution (Khomeini), and the 'Grand Show' that we still see among representative actors might entail those unresolved and oft under appreciated details of the Western hand that fed this oppressive dog/regime). The regime's position of destroying the Persian, non-Semitic (related to European ancestral root stocks including Mr. O'Dwyer's, languages and cities among many other unique and distinguishable correlations) ancient historical sites, preserved for 2500+ yrs for the world's posterity, is one point that paints a picture of a shared agenda by our regime and that one.
If anyone might care to know, Cyrus's palace site and tomb are under water just recently as a result of dam(n) constructed by the IRI.
Lastly, a couple tidbits attributable to Cyrus via Persia/Iran: Tolerance/sanctuary for others, abolition of slavery, environmentalism, feminism, justice consciousness... federalism and representation, probably (although revealing and wrongly designated/recalled by spurious OT authors) the first factual figure described 'messiah/christos/anointed' along with the Zoroastrian principles that gird the fabric of the 3 major religions.
Please keep in mind that this is not advocacy of religion, well, at least those which have lost their intent to understand the world's community and rather dictate what is acceptable for others. Finally, it's X-mas and I would be remiss to not offer a reminder of the Persian(Iranian) Magi who may be the only people to know and to know whether there even was a JC. Contrary to the Fat Guy with red on (maybe not his pointy shoes though), the commercial production that Magi can come in all colors and shades is a distortion that is not consistent with the surviving Zoroastrian culture; [they] were Persian. It seems [they] were also at that time concerned with Puppets and Illegal Occupations of the NE. Thx.

Iran is the next target. Hence the Christmas Nigerian bombings of Christian churches with supposed "Iranian" Al Qaeda ties. Persia will soon be dust. We won't ask for proof. Isreal will get their Chanukah wish. Doesn't take much.
Libya just tried to unify Africa and the banking in Africa. That was enough to justify bombing them back centuries and handing their government over to armed unknowns and Africa now becomes a military outpost governed by AfriCom, a western controlled highly militarized force. Lebanon was just a testing ground.
The western world agrees now that Persians, and Arabs are like indigenous people and lowly immigrants: expendable, and easily identifiable. And we now have the resources, all those troops that came home from Iraq.
China is for another day. Can't afford it right now. But they'll make an easy target once we get those pesky "muslims" controlled. Easily delineated threat. Can't look much different or seem more strange can they.
Manning needs a new lawyer! The one he's got said that Manning was very young and thought he could change the world. He even said that a 30 year sentence would be fair. What appalling hubris!
As many people know, while viewing US military videos taken from a US military attack helicopter, Bradley Manning witnessed US soldiers killing unarmed men & blowing up a large, multistory building because an armed man was seen going into it. Manning considered it to be hard evidence of war crimes. I have seen the videos & believe that any sane person would agree with Manning's analysis. When someone is aware of war crimes, but does nothing to stop them, then he becomes guilty of the same crimes.
Many know that war crimes by US forces were extremely common in Iraq & Vietnam. The soldiers have been conditioned/brainwashed to accept that "it's just the way it is", to be 'good soldiers, heroes & patriots' by not telling others because "squeeling is what traitors do".
Bradley Manning is much more of a hero than the others who are blindly following orders from minions of a corrupt institution (the military industrial complex) that is in truth nothing more than a huge group of organized criminals. Sadly, they have become the #1 obstacle to world peace, destroying & disrupting more people than we can imagine, & is the biggest drain on American taxpayers - sucking more energy than all the other expenses combined.
The US news media & justice sytems are working hard to distract the people from the important facts of the matter in Manning's case, and directing people to irrelevant side issues concerning the personality of the messenger or to the fact that the organized criminals who are Manning's so called superiors, wanted to keep the information away from the public. It is all theatre - much stranger than fiction.
The fact that war crimes have become common & acceptable to the US military industrial complex is a very clear indication that it should be shut down. There is ample evidence for those with eyes to see, that the US military industrial complex intentionally creates enemies that are necessary for it to continue justifying it's existence to the American people - and it does so with assistance from the corporate news agencies that work hard to maintain the status quo, to perpetuate the huge lie that says the troops "keep us free". The "news media" is intentionally directing the masses away from the important concerns of Manning's case - like the corrupt nature of the US war machine and the fact that the US gov't ignores international law whenever it wishes.
The truth will set us free from warmongers & the filthy, blood stained claws of the darkest elements of the 1%. Those who help perpetuate the myths and lies will only help perpetuate hell on earth for the unfortunate ones who get in the way of corporate America's interests & in so doing increase the risk of global nuclear annihilation of the human species. It seems that if we don't make some big changes soon, that it is very likely that it will be too late.
Watch the war crimes video released by Manning to Wikileaks & decide for yourself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rXPrfnU3G0
The truth will set us free - from the liars & their lies.
Maybe it takes a young gay man to do what needs to be done? He has changed the world.
Much more than all the Pat Tillman's and other hetero heros. Sorry to the Tillman family, but really all he did was become a recruiting tool until his death, then he became something to cover up. I commend his family for continuing to try to make his sacrifice memorable for what it actually was. An example of how young men can be goaded into using violence without any understanding of the true losses they inflict.
Manning knew what he was doing, knew it's consequences and had the courage to follow through with his intentions. He wasn't just blindly shooting off a gun to make himself feel like a big man. He'd identified his enemy and he knew the risks of his actions. Much different from the US soldiers that shot Pat Tillman.
"In the Year of the Protester, Bradley Manning is the Great Dissenter"
Actually in what should be termed the "Year of the People", Manning is the bravest man standing. The only person with the "balls" to do what needed to be done. He pulled down the curtain hiding the phoney wizard.
Why is it we let Time Warner tell us what sort of a year it was? Aren't they one of the biggest corporations around. Why are they setting anyone's agenda? Maybe when they pay their full tax burden I'll listen to them.
GardenerNorcal,
The beauty of the Persian legacy(Cyrus's system), is dignity and advancement opportunity for all; it might be described recently as, "you can't evict/kill an idea" (source unknown by me).
So, what that means today is that it is guaranteed suicide, no matter a delay, to start (or conflagration, whichever you prefer) war and try and oppress the truth since the diffusion of ideas on the internet can't be totally controlled. There is some smoldering on their a**es at the moment, and an inextinguishable fire is certain. I wouldn't underestimate Iran, I'd just give credit where it was due (~ do unto others...) and not test the collective sympathies to Cyrus's genius.
Offering Dignity is as close to a pragmatic maxim/assurance... that people would never practically choose anything else after realizing it. It's gonna likely be the hardest way to learn that lesson for those people. An f grade. It's been around for a few thousand years for a reason. . . . Paridaisa, or Heaven with a quantitative aspect and practical for All no matter the religion. Who thinks they'll win the next war after Iran, or the next after that . . .? They might be out of power pretty soon and being prosecuted to the fullest if they don't 'kick' first, and I hasten to think persecuted in a way that stories or fables haven't prepared them for.
Iranian regime with Al QaeCIA maybe, but not Sunni Arab Alqaeda and the obvious rift aided by US and Arabia(Israel too) to arm gangs in Iraq to kill innocent women and children Shiia pilgrims. By the same ir-rationale being used to concoct association of Iran to Alqueda after 10 years of prosecuting the wrong countries for 911 (oops, now we're saying it's Iran), the US/Israel/Arabia are complicit in stoking sectarian violence and killing pilgrims with their arms sales and support of terrorists linked to Alqueda (Jundallah etc.). Jr.'s world-Sunni-arms-sale-tour just prior to leaving office is a good example tying the three complicit countries together.
Are we to believe the whole of the ME and Central Asia and all the countries therein are responsible for 911 and just not a few million Israelis; it's kinda laughable when you step back and look at the general, and coupled with decades of prejudice and stereotyping in this country. History may not be kind to what's being done. It's too wild.
One other thought: the Semitization of America is folly to pursue as an agenda.
[Why is it we let Time Warner tell us what sort of a year it was?]
Agreed!
wc652 & Blackbird, thanks for the warm welcome.
