A Man in Tunisia, a Movement on Wall Street, and the Soldier Who Ignited the Fuse
It's Saturday night and I didn't want the day to end before I sent out this note to you.
One year ago today (December 17th), Mohamed Bouazizi, a man who had a simple produce stand in Tunisia, set himself on fire to protest his government's repression. His singular sacrifice ignited a revolution that toppled Tunisia's dictator and launched revolts in regimes across the Middle East.
Three months ago today, Occupy Wall Street began with a takeover of New York's Zuccotti Park. This movement against the greed of corporate America and its banks -- and the money that now controls most of our democratic institutions -- has quickly spread to hundreds of towns and cities across America. The majority of Americans now agree that a nation where 400 billionaires have more wealth than 160 million Americans combined is not the country they want America to be. The 99% are rising up against the 1% -- and now there is no turning back.
Twenty-four years ago today, U.S. Army Spc. Bradley Manning was born. He has now spent 570 days in a military prison without a trial -- simply because he allegedly blew the whistle on the illegal and immoral war in Iraq. He exposed what the Pentagon and the Bush administration did in creating this evil and he did so by allegedly leaking documents and footage to Wikileaks. Many of these documents dealt not only with Iraq but with how we prop up dictators around the world and how our corporations exploit the poor on this planet. (There were even cables with crazy stuff on them, like one detailing Bush's State Department trying to stop a government minister in another country from holding a screening of 'Fahrenheit 9/11.')
The Wikileaks trove was a fascinating look into how the United States conducts its business -- and clearly those who don't want the world to know how we do things in places like, say, Tunisia, were not happy with Bradley Manning.
Mohamed Bouazizi was being treated poorly by government officials because all he wanted to do was set up a cart and sell fruit and vegetables on the street. But local police kept harassing him and trying to stop him. He, like most Tunisians, knew how corrupt their government was. But when Wikileaks published cables from the U.S. ambassador in Tunis confirming the corruption -- cables that were published just a week or so before Mohamed set himself on fire -- well, that was it for the Tunisian people, and all hell broke loose.
People across the world devoured the information Bradley Manning revealed, and it was used by movements in Egypt, Spain, and eventually Occupy Wall Street to bolster what we already thought was true. Except here were the goods -- the evidence that was needed to prove it all true. And then a democracy movement spread around the globe so fast and so deep -- and in just a year's time! When anyone asks me, "Who started Occupy Wall Street?" sometimes I say "Goldman Sachs" or "Chase" but mostly I just say, "Bradley Manning." It was his courageous action that was the tipping point -- and it was not surprising when the dictator of Tunisia censored all news of the Wikileaks documents Manning had allegedly supplied. But the internet took Manning's gift and spread it throughout Tunisia, a young man set himself on fire and the Arab Spring that led eventually to Zuccotti Park has a young, gay soldier in the United States Army to thank.
And that is why I want to honor Bradley Manning on this, his 24th birthday, and ask the millions of you reading this to join with me in demanding his immediate release. He does not deserve the un-American treatment, including cruel solitary confinement, he's received in over eighteen months of imprisonment. If anything, this young man deserves a friggin' medal. He did what great Americans have always done -- he took a bold stand against injustice and he did it without stopping for a minute to consider the consequences for himself.
The Pentagon and the national security apparatus are hell-bent on setting an example with Bradley Manning. But we as Americans have a right to know what is being done in our name and with our tax dollars. If the government tries to cover up its malfeasance, then it is the duty of each and every one of us, should the situation arise, to drag the truth, kicking and screaming if necessary, into the light of day.
The American flag was lowered in Iraq this past Thursday as our war on them officially came to an end. If anyone should be on trial or in the brig right now, it should be those men who lied to the nation in order to start this war -- and in doing so sent nearly 4,500 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis to their deaths.
But it is not Bush or Rumsfeld or Cheney or Wolfowitz who sit in prison tonight. It is the hero who exposed them. It is Bradley Manning who has lost his freedom and that, in turn, becomes just one more crime being committed in our name.
I know, I know, c'mon Mike -- it's the holiday season, there's presents to buy and parties to go to! And yes, this really is one of my favorite weeks of the year. But in the spirit of the man whose birth will be celebrated next Sunday, please do something, anything, to help this young man who spends his birthday tonight behind bars. I say, enough. Let him go home and spend Christmas with his family. We've done enough violence to the world this decade while claiming to be a country that admires the Prince of Peace. The war is over. And a whole new movement has a lot to thank Bradley Manning for.

Show AllCan't get around it, it's cruel and unusual punishment deliberately designed to cause one to lose one's mental faculties. And, Obama could order it ended. If Manning must be held, it must be in far better and far more humane conditions, such as one of the well known federal "country club" prisons in a general population general privileges situation, and if he must be held he must be formally charged and provided a competent impartial defense. And it should be in a civilian court. There should be no UCMJ -- people do not give up constitutional rights when joining the military. Nowhere is that said in the constitution that such rights are suspended for soldiers. Manning is innocent until proven guilty and he is not an escape risk. This government has not a shred of humanity left in it.
MM: " But it is not Bush or Rumsfeld or Cheney or Wolfowitz that sit in prison tonight ". Michael, you forgot Obama! He said what they did was okay because he wanted to look " forward ". That makes him guilty, culpable, complicit and an accessory to the crime. And you also left out Pelosi, who said Bush was innocent and any prosecution of Bush " was off the table "!
Posted my comment above before reading yours. Good comment.
I cannot help but think that if a nation on the US enemies list held a young soldier like Bradley Manning who was being treated in the same manner for the same acts, that the US would declare it an "outrage" and the talking heads from FOX to MSNBC would be bloviating about how despicable it all is and how it proves that the US system is clearly superior because it is about "freedom."
Too true.
>>But the internet took Manning's gift and spread it throughout Tunisia, a young man set himself on fire and the Arab Spring that led eventually to Zuccotti Park has a young, gay soldier in the United States Army to thank.<<
If only some event were able to skew this timeline into a world where a post revolution icon of its, the revolution's, success turned out to be Bradley Manning, a "castout" of the society from childhood. I want him released. He has been cruelly and unusually punished. Let him out. The constitution does not differentiate between civilian and military in the applicability of its language. Held without charge for well over a year? Held naked in solitary confinement? No proof has been offered that Manning gave anything to anyone, and I know you guys will correct me on that if I'm wrong.
"Held naked in solitary confinement?"
Between Manning and the freak show pictures from Abu Ghraib, what the Pentagon should be investigating is why our heroes in uniform are fascinated with naked boys.
"He does not deserve the un-American treatment, including cruel solitary confinement,"
Michael, Michael, Michael.
that is not at all un-American.
Bradley Manning will go down in history as an American Patriot. That is, if history is written by patriots. Unfortunately, this probably won't be the case. It's sad to watch such a great country in decline.
"Great"? What part of this country's history would have earned it such a word of approbation? Was it the genocide of the original people? The enslavement of millions of human beings? The wars conducted to steal resources from others and enrich the MIC? The funneling of wealth and power into a very few hands? So much to choose from!
You beat me too the comment.
This countrie's 'great history' is an illusion.
For all the things you mentioned, to the coups done for the corporations.
This 'great' country dropped nuclear bombs on civilians.
Depleted Uranium on Iraq.
Constant chicken shit cowardly bombs from drone on civilians.
Plus the Apache helicopter incident.
Not to mention all the things this 'great' country did to Vietnam.
This country has been an boil to the whole world.
However, this great country is just doing what TPTB tells it to do. With OUR MONEY.
I feel no sympathy at all for the heroes that get killed or maimed.
How many obits have said "He was doing what he loved"? Loved kicking in doors at night, burning villages down, ect.
Hell, even the Indian stories were made up. Probably the first False Flag so people would get behind killing .bown skinned people.
Land of the Free and Home of the Brave my ass.
Amen brother, Amen.
The African American faith leaders have recently joined the OWS movement, announcing Occupy the Dream. On January 16, Martin Luther King's birthday, they will be occupying the Federal Reserve.
Rocky Anderson has formed a new party, called the Justice Party. Mr. Anderson is the former mayor of Salt Lake City, and if you will look him up on wikipedia, he's a man of principle who believes in the Constitution.
Between the OWS and the Justice Party I have hopes that we will be able to take our country back.

Yes...Mike we need to work to free Bradley Manning. But the person who gave us, "Capitalism" A Love Story!" has got to stop blaming just the "Republicans" and "Bush-Cheney" and include
the Obama administration and the "Democrats" as well. You need to acknowledge that it is the entire economic, social and political system of Capitalism that is responsible. And finally that the 99% have to become conscious of themselves as a global working class and go from a class in themselves to a class for themselves and free all of humanity from it's clutches. Just saying.....
If Bradley Manning had been more circumspect and not blabbed about it to Adrian Lamo, it is quite likely he would be free today. This should serve as a warning to any who would do his commendable action that extreme discretion is in order in this rapidly unfolding corporate fascist state that is the USA.
We need to do all that can be done to see this man gets home, it is our duty as a american citizen. He has done for us, we need to do for him..
If someone needs to take his place then it should be ex president Bush
Just to set the record straight: It was under Obama's presidency that Manning was arrested and imprisoned in tortuous, solitary conditions. It was Obama who lied and said that Manning was being treated fairly. It was Obama who said - in a pretrial statement! - that Manning is guilty.
If Michael Moore and other Democrats are not able to say this, I will have do it for them.
Thank you Michael! It's folks like you that give us hope to hang in there.

Do you think there will ever be a effort to remove the war criminals in Congress. I mean really, what do they have to do for people to wake up? Back during the Vietnam era, Americans at least seemed to have some connection to reality and that they were responsible for what was happening. Today, Americans act as if some super hero wil fix everything, while they buy more goods made in child slave encampments.
I agree with Michael's analysis of our situation and his continuing discourse on our upside-down feudal system, as we allowed its re-emergence over the past fifty years.
I also agree with his choice of heroes to reward, instead of more feudal-speak of those who need to burn our heroes upon a clearly corrupt political stake.
In addition to protesting with our feet and expressions, I'd suggest we go one tiny step further to redesign the ballot for next Fall's fateful election. Its a tiny addition that might attract a 90% voter turnout. At the bottom of the ballot we add "none of the above." When NOA gets 50% there must be a new set of candidates for a revote. This allows a chance of moving beyond the limitation of choice between cancer or polio.
I wonder. A lot of posts on CD, including mine, are circling around the problem of "What do we do now?" Obama was such a Trojan Horse, who can trust a democrat any more? Without a representative democracy, we need to develop other solutions and I wonder if Michael Moore is now at that stage. He says nothing positive about Obama in this essay, does not ask us to support the man. I think he is left with the same dilemma we all are: one in which we re-connect with our basic values, re-assess our heroes/heras, get our sea legs under us and then strategize for the long run.
"He says nothing positive about Obama in this essay..."
Ignoring the criminal acts of someone like barry is a form of positive statement. Sort of a lie by omission.
We have been lied to repeatedly: Tonkin Gulf re: Vietnam, Hussein"s non-existent weapons of mass destruction re: Iraq War etc. etc. Thank you Manning. Moore, Assange. Keep the truth alive.
Didn’t anyone else object to the title's “lighting the fuse” metaphor, set against a Tunisian man who actually set himself on fire?
I think it a bit disingenuous for MM to tell people that Bradley Manning was the inspiration for Occupy Wall Street—wouldn’t it have been Occupy Pentagon instead? And I’ll agree with those who say that he’s been an important force in waking up Amerika, as far as he goes. He doesn’t go far enough for me, but there are other documentaries to watch and different books to read, and I’m grateful for his presence, rare as he is.
MM has become a stooge and troll for the Obama Admin. I cannot believe he would have the gall to rightfully defend Manning but entirely avoid naming his abuser: Barak Obama. I use to like his films. But I will never spend a cent to incease his persoanl wealth again. Mike ought to crawl back up Obama's rectum where he belongs.
ekobe, are you even aware that MM gives half his money away to meaningful charities? Your last statement is very offensive.
At least Mike is trying to educate the stupid people in this country about how crooked it is.
He warned everyone about Bush and the car , guns and insurances.
What have YOU done?
It is called a bi polar disorder Joe. I guess that might give Mike peace of mind as measured against the thousands of innocents Obama has murdered in his endless war agenda and drone strike policies. I disagree that Moore is educating anyone. Moore is using propoganda to propogate his myths. Moore is trying to get Obama elected again. If you cannot see the hypocrisy inherent in the double standard offered here, then your the one who needs to be educated on the power of political memes.
well said ekobe.
for anyone to hail MM as some type of saint who speaks for the common person is a big &*$F#* hypocrite (democrat).
Thankyou Micheal, sadly we see the more your country men seek justice the more your country men are screwed down its so shocking for people around the world to witness the ploys of the upper echelon of your country that ultimately effect the whole world.the future prognosis may not look very good for the corporate thugs should things continue in this insane and deplorable way..
Sending good wishes to Bradley may he ultimately step forth into freedom.
I hope everyone who thinks Manning is a hero contributes to his legal fund! Click on the link at the end of the article and it will take you to Bradley Manning's website and from there to a place to donate. This is truly a "put your money where your mouth is" moment. Thanks.
Moore rightly defends Manning. He rightly notes that Manning is a hero and the victim of oppressive power. Then at the bottom of his essay he tells us this:
__
“But it is not Bush or Rumsfeld or Cheney or Wolfowitz who sit in prison tonight. It is the hero who exposed them. It is Bradley Manning who has lost his freedom and that, in turn, becomes just one more crime being committed in our name.”
__
Actually Mike, and just in case you've been secluded in the North Pole for the last three years, Manning exposed more than Bush, Rumsfield, Cheney and Wolfowitz; he also exposed the Clinton State Dept, the Obama presidency, and Obama Justice Dept. Had you bothered to read Wiki leak documents, the culpability runs far deeper than you are willing to go. Maybe you ought take up another hobby, Mike. Because you suck at this one.
__
Nowhere in this article is a hint that it was Obama’s justice Dept who arrested Manning. Or that it is Obama’s military that is torturing Manning of which Obama is Commander and Chief.
__
Moreover, I wonder if Moore ever heard Obama’s response to Manning when asked by a reporter about Manning being tortured in prison and under Obama’s watch; Obama flippantly replied, “Manning is where he needs to be.” Obama further referred to Manning as a traitor.
__
As is typical of a MM piece, one only gets half truths, obfuscations, and an avoidance of reality. It is pretty clear MM has a bi-polar disorder when it comes to his affiliation with Obama and the Democrats.
__
It always makes one wonder what type of Dream World Moore lives in, when he continures his exculpatory avoidence of Obama's crimes against humanity and Manning.
"what type of Dream World Moore lives in"
He lives the "Dream World" on Torch Lake, MI, an absolutely gorgeous lake, save the million dollar homes surrounding it. We took the grandkids there a few years ago. The lake is crystal clear and turquoise blue. We tried to find a quiet place to swim and have a picnic but it was difficult because so much of the lake front is private. Finally, we found a scrap of grass and a beach where the kids could play and swim. What a life! He's certainly one of the lucky ones.
Not to be nasty but just to make a point: Could someone take a row boat out onto the lake, anchor it in front of Moore's house and with a big megaphone call out: "Michael Moore! Come out of your house and explain why you are supporting a president who is busy shredding our Constitutional right to be protected by the fair and just due process of law?!! Tell us why you employ double standards, criticizing Bush virulently but putting on soft, fluffy gloves for Obama?
Michael is not a right wing Democrat and that's at least very good. And he's very much in support of Occupy. I appreciate him for that. The problem I have with him is that he employs double standards. If Bush were doing these things, Moore would be on his case with no holds barred.
LOL
I hope MM is reading these comments because I still think he's a good mouthpiece for many important issues, but I wish he'd be more critical of Obama, and get rid of his double standard. Obama has continued the policies of Bush and may even be worse.
It is Moore's omission of Obama that I find so troubling. It's Obama who is President now & it's on his watch that Bradley is being held in isolation and treated so unfairly.
Many of the criticisms of Moore are cavils. Of course American exceptionalism is indefensible; but in speaking of "American values," Moore is highlighting the hypocrisy of those who approve of the hideous treatment of Manning but also shout about what they claim are the great American traditions of democracy, the rule of law, etc. And whatever detestable acts Obama has committed or condoned----and there are many----it remains a fact that Bush & Cheney launched the two wars that cost trillions of $, killed hundreds of thousands of people, and displaced and ruined the lives of millions of people, while lying to the American people. Manning, by (allegedly) leaking classified material, informed Americans what their leaders have been doing in their names with their money----a necessary condition for any democracy worthy of the name, as Jefferson and others have noted-----while jeopardizing "national security" in no demonstrable way. Hence, Manning is a hero and Bush and Cheney are criminals. Moore is simply comparing Manning to Bush & Cheney. Who else might be culpable of various crimes is irrelevant to this simple comparison.
It was Obama who escalated the war in Afghanistan. There were less than 15 thousand troops in Afghanistan when Obama came into office. Now there is over 100,000 troops. I guess your post is another apologetic for Moore who refused to name Mannings torture and arrest by the Obama Admin. That is ALSO a FACT and it is hardly irrelevent unless, of course, your a Democrat.
The point is that Manning is a hero and those who launched and continued the wars are the villains and criminals, a list which includes Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, both Clintons, etc. Have I left anyone out? Of course!! But this omission does not alter the truth of what I just said. The statement that Manning is a hero and Obama is a criminal does not become false or hypocritical simply because it contains no mention of Bush, any more than excoriating Bush becomes hypocritical if Cheney is not mentioned at the same time. Yes, in many respects Obama has sunk beneath Bush in iniquity; for example, while Bush kidnapped and tortured suspected "enemies," Obama simply has them assassinated. Moore's point about Manning's heroism in sacrificing his freedom so Americans can know the truth about what their leaders are doing in their names should not be disregarded simply because he fails to condemn Obama harshly enough.
Ahh what to think of Michael Moore?
He did condemn the US/NATOIL bombing of Libya
But now he advances the straight line from Tunesia to Democracy! theory. But Libya was a clear view into how the Company uses, and sometimes foments, false democracy memes.
Is it fair to question Moore on this? Is he advancing the Company line here?
If so, it's a little subtle, but still ultimately supports a meme that glosses over the dark side of the Arab Spring, the part that happens to advance zionist interests in Libya and Syria, for instance.
My other grounds for suspicion of Moore is that his manager is Rahm Emmanuel's brother, Ari. To me this smacks of zionist and Company control, along the lines of a zionist/media/security complex that allows Moore to question Bush about his connections to the bin Laden family, but never raises the very substantiated question of Israeli connections to the 9/11 bombings.
I salute you Michael Moore.
You got it right.
You don't look good, you don't dress good, but you sure think good. You remind me of Abraham Lincoln.
"You can't fool all the people all the time"'
hopefully we will not need guillotines to tame the 1%.
Remember the guillotine(French) is much more humane than a lynching.(American)...
for the victim.
Let us hope that the 1 % realise the errors of their ways and that we can get back on track without any extreme measures and realize we are all passengers on planet Earth which is in DISTRESS.
Solidarity.
Consider the hypocrisy of this piece and the real life consequences for Manning; seriously consider the implications of Moore’s disingenuous stance: Moore condemns Manning's treatment. But in spite of this fact, he will go out and vote for Obama who is Manning’s chief inquisitor; leading to a trial by kangaroo court, and the sentence predetermined beforehand. It is precisely this unjust type of political mechanism that Moore is arguing against, but nevertheless, in the case of Obama will ignore it. This is the worst type of self serving hypocrisy one can imagine. Moore is simply part of the problem not its solution. And given the most serious charge against Manning is “aiding the enemy” and carries a Death Sentence; maybe if Moore is lucky, Manning's execution might land on Obama's Inauguration day. That way Mike can attend both events without being away from his Mansion on Torch Lake too long.
This kind of cynicism clearly deflects from the actual revelation and content of the commentary. That this certainly is disturbing to the powers that be to have the connection between Wikileaks being responsible for the democratic uprisings in the Arab world exposing the hypocrisy of US foreign policy that supported the despots there being overthrown. Or does that point elude you?
Once again I suspect a troll.
Tango2 are you related to Tango or Tango-part I?
__
The illusion and trollish behavior is yours, not mine. You MM apologists are really quite amusing if not utterly disconnected from reality. Moore’s entire article is based on systemic oppression and how this oppression is specifically working to destroy a life of a hero, Manning. Consequently, Moore attaches this oppression only to the neo-conservative movement, while totally ignoring that it was Obama who brought charges against Manning. It is Obama who is torturing Manning. It was Obama who is prosecuting Manning; and it is Obama’s Justice Dept that will murder Manning or sentence him to life in prison. The cynicism and break from what is happening is Moore’s and yours, via his and your monumental cowardice, avarice, and disconnect from the truth. You DNC plants are becoming a good joke on this forum. Most here are waking up to posters who use multiple identities while pretending they are something they are not. Recognize this scenario?
__
While you may suspect a troll, the participants here know you ARE ONE and following the same standards and norms of DNC dirty trick policies!
This rebuttal is directed to readers not tango.
__
Note the framing in Tango’s rebuttal trying to dissuade you that systemic oppression is something entirely connected to the neo conservative movement, and NOT a part of the corporate owned duopoly (including Democrats) who serves only the military industrial complex and corporations. The systemic oppression inherent in the system, if you take Moore’s piece entirely on its merits, only asserts a responsibility for the neo conservative movement, at least Moore is half right. But if you re-read Moore’s essay toward the bottom he does this by specifically naming Bush, Rumsfield, Chenny, and Wolfowitz to Wiki documents as of this told the entire story.
__
If you believe this narrow reading of history and of Wiki while concomitantly excluding Wiki documents that name the entire Obama Administration as culpable with every additional thing named in this piece, and take the drone strike murder of thousand of innocents, the Obama Administration far exceeds anything Bush did and that includes VOIDING DUE PROCESS PROTECTIONS. This is essentially what poor Tango want to avoid at all costs by re-directing your attention back on the Republicans. (In fact, it is the same position taken on the recent Ehnreich article.)
__
Every Third Party voter/leftist has been the target of these types of scurrilous attacks by political entities and their surrogate trolls with a vested interest in attempting to destroy one's credibility, blowing smoke, and sweeping obfuscations. We all know them for what they are.
__
The Moderator on CD recently noted this type of dishonesty of people who use multiple sign on names. If you want the type of systemic oppression that Moore names in this piece to continue, then Obama is certainly your man. Follow Moore's lead.
I hope CD might consider linking the ip address to all the posts so we can eliminate this type of dishonesty in the future. I highly suspect that many of these postings of support for Moore, can be linked directly back to Moore. It is a kind of tactic that shares confluence with his megaphone metaphor.
Is it not the law that any American who knows of the commission of a crime or the conspiracy to commit a crime must report it?.
So some may argue he didn't report it to the authorities. If he had what would be the action taken? So he did the next best thing, reported to the American people what their Government was SECRETLY doing that which was illegal, immoral, and unforgivable.
Yes America isn't the only country that acts, in secret immorally, so rise above those you despise or be judged as just another hypocritical purveyor of lies.
Per his norm, Moore ignores the culpability of Obama in both Bradley Mannings imprisonment, and our illegal/immoral wars abroad. This is hypocrisy of the worst sort.
I do not like Michael Moore, nor do I consider him a spokesman for anything even remotely progressive. Moore is a classic neoliberal, embracing large corrupt unions such as the teamsters, and conveniently ignoring the facts surrounding the most corrupt regime in American history...Herr Oilybombers.
Herr Oilybomber and his Goldman Sachs boys besides overseeing the largest bank heist in history, are also the people torturing Bradley Manning, starting wars without even asking Congress, assassinating U.S. citizens without even a pretense of legality, and yet Moore conveniently ignores their crimes.
Anyone who points out the atrocities committed by the Bush Regime and ignores the war crimes and treasonous actions of Herr Oilybomber and the Goldman Sachs boys, is a hypocrite of the worst sort. I'm talking to you Michael Moore, and any of you neo liberal scum who still support da Oilybomber.
White Trash and afoul mouth indeed!
Wow, what a nasty and scathing rebuke on Mr Moore! Apparently you do not read very thoroughly Mr Moores' commentaries as he has plenty of appropriate criticism of Mr Obama where due and is in fact very informed. These kind of nasty character attacks do not help or add in any way to a civil and informed conversation regarding the issues but spread vitriol and banality.
Mr Moores' commentary on the connection with Wikileaks and the ensuing Arab Spring uprising and the Occupy movement is utterly fascinating and overlooked by the MSM. And his public stature does give him the ability to reach millions!
I suspect a troll!
