Bill Clinton, the Person Who Set the Economy on Its Bubble Driven Path, Has Economic Advice for the Country
The Post reports on a new book by President Clinton which offers economic advice to the country. While the book notes in passing that Clinton's policies contributed to the economic crisis by deregulating Wall Street, it failed to point out that Clinton's policies were actually central to the disaster the economy is now facing.

Clinton promoted both the growth of the stock bubble and the over-valuation of the dollar. The latter came about when his administration organized the "saving" of East Asia following its financial crisis in 1997. The harsh terms of the bailout required the countries of the region to run huge trade surpluses in order to meet their payments. This meant raising the value of the dollar against their own currencies.
Other developing countries wanted to avoid ever being in this situation so they too began to accumulate reserves at a huge pace after 1997 by keeping down the value of their own currencies against the dollar. This led to the huge run-up in the dollar and therefore the large trade deficit that we saw in the last decade and continue to see today.
The demand gap created by the trade deficit was filled by the housing bubble in the last decade. With the bubble now burst it can only be filled by government budget deficits until the dollar falls enough to bring trade closer to balance. Given the enormous disaster that resulted from his economic mismanagament (which could have been reversed had anyone in the Bush administration been awake), it is highly ironic that President Clinton would write a book offering economic advice to the nation.

Show AllIt was primarily Alan Greenspan who created the Nasdaq bubble which popped in March of 2000.
Greenbean kept margin rates ridiculously low allowing traders to purchase dot-kaboom stocks with very little money and often using penny stocks as collateral.
With an assist from financial journalist-cheerleaders (CNBC) and lax regulation the Nasdaq soared to 5,200 then crashed evaporating $6 trillion into money heaven.
Most of the newly minted initial public offerings inflating the Nasdaq were illegitimate shells and never would have been brought to market without banker's palms being greased.
Irrational exuberance, from Greenspan, with love.
Clinton zealously promoted Greenspan's reappointment, just as Obama zealously promoted Greenspan protege Bernanke's reappointment.
Actually, Bush reappointed Greenspan once Greenspan testified before Congress that a huge federal surplus was not good for the country, so they might as well lower tax rates.

Both Clinton and Bush reappointed Greenspan.
It's in Swiss banks and the Cayman Islands.

Don't forget Larry Summers! Who, as it happens, is one of Oblahblah's Chief Economic Advisors. Curious.
Why these political and media whores are even given a stage is sick.
aaw, the media whore t.v. stars are given nothing. they own the theatre!
Perhaps the problem is not so much that someone like Bill Clinton is still allowed to present his views in the corporate media. The more glaring and egregious outrage, I believe, is that there is seldom, if ever, a legitimate person on the left who is present when Clinton gives his self-serving speeches who can then point out how much harm Clinton has caused to the American people. And when this is not done so many Americans will probably believe that a former American president can spout his opinions which then make him appear to be infallible.
Ralph Nader HAS on many occasions refuted Clinton's and other Dims complicity in systematically destroying the US working class (and many other people around the globe) only to be chastised by the mainstream media, Clintonbots, Obamabots...they continue to blame Nader for Dubya's 2000 coup.
Expect to Obama to do the same after the election. He can play tag-team with Clinton and probably do far more damage 'on the 'loose' than in the White House (and make much more loot).
At $125,000 a pop.

Bill (Just-Call-Me-Bubba) Clinton giving the rest of us advice about our finances is a bit like asking the criminal-class bankers how to invest our money. When will we be rid of the likes of Bill Clinton and the rest of the 1990s era ruling elite who set the financial course of our destruction? Clinton needs to retire with his unearned millions and while he is at it, take his hideous wife with him.
"When will we be rid of the likes of Bill Clinton and the rest of the 1990s era ruling elite who set the financial course of our destruction?"
When the current murderous economic/political/militarist system is fundamentally replaced by one which puts people's lives and welfare above greed and power. Meaning never.
As long as Amurcans (Dubya's pronunciation is appropriate) keep buying books written by the Amurcan crime families, those families will continue to prosper.
what a scumbag bill was and is. bush and obama are from the same swill.
It is not possible to observe Bill Clinton without seeing the totalitarian inversion response to the cries for democracy, basic decency, denial of access of the people and flagrant squandering of life and balance in Haiti.
From my perspective, I see a tragedy of hubris, blindness and 'so-called-elite' blundering and destruction in the paralysis of due process.
Bill Clinton began to open the eyes of the public to the true colors of both himself and Hillary Clinton when when he so blatantly said "its the economy, stupid". This later followed with "How dare you" in response to a protestor at an event. These two clear examples of the inability to speak without an innate bent to humiliate illustrate the degree to which he is removed from legitimacy of process in any notion as leader and earning the nickname 'slick willy'.
He has done more to galvanize long term, documented critique of egregious abuses of power than any given movement. I will forever be thankful to Wikileaks for informing us of the correspondence in which Hillary Clinton called for spying on UN diplomats. Claiming that it is done all the time is a red herring in need of deconstruction..

there also is his infamous response to amy goodman's questions, as president, during an interview on the day of al gore's 2000 run. the interaction revealed a bit of bill clinton's character and economic-political connections.

Great clip on youtube. Highly recommended. Not for the temper, but for the facts provided.
"This led to the huge run-up in the dollar and therefore the large trade deficit that we saw in the last decade and continue to see today."
I like Baker, but like a lot of economists, he doesn't want to admit that a large part of the trade deficit comes from deliberate offshoring of US industry, not just currency manipulation ...
I get this urge to say that I think I hate Clinton more than I hate Obama. Of course, this is irrational, to think that you hate one sociopath more than another. Clinton's crimes are on par with Obama's. Destruction of the working class (Nafta), his record on personal liberties paved the way for the 'patriot act', and, of course, he has the blood of Waco on his hands.
But I digress. What is the point of comparing terrible evil with monstrous evil.
And Obama's crimes are exacerbated by the fact that he came on the heels of Dubya.
Clinton also has the far greater blood of Serbia (78 straight days of bombing by U.S./NATO planes) on his hands.
Like Obama's sham "humanitarian intervention" in Libya, Clinton's "humanitarian intervention" into the Balkans caused much more harm than otherwise. But, again, like it will in Libya (with AfriCom), it resulted in a massive permanent U.S./NATO military base, Camp Bondsteel, to expand the global U.S. Empire.
In terms of Nixon, the biggest crime against the people and the rule of law is the fact that he was never tried. Instead, Ford pardoned him. Because Nixon was never held to account, no POTUS ever will be. Just like the law breaking bankers. There will be no jail time because we have no accountability to the rule of law.
The degradation of our nation and democracy went into full swing with the pardon of Nixon. It has just picked up speed in the last 30 years. This train has crashed through the fabric of our democracy and the Constitution. We are done. Stick us with a fork.
Better yet, support an Occupy near you. Time to stop bitchin', and time to start marchin'.

Nice observations, ilovebb. It's all about relative criminality - the political power to enact great crimes based on the circumstances of the time. For those wanting a nice summary of criminal U.S. presidents from a war crimes perspective, I recommend the book, "Lying for Empire: How To Commit War Crimes With a Straight Face" by David Model.
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/lying-for-empire-david-model/1021106562
Clinton made Chapter 8, titled, "The Empire as Good Guy - Clinton Kills Civilians To Save Them," which is about his bombing of Yugoslavia. The 2005 book got George W. Bush in the roster too, but it needs a revised edition to include O'BombYa and his drones.
Anyway, Nixon is still a good focal point of criminality, as you note. It was indeed more innocent times when carpet bombing people was still conducted with stealth and there still was a little bit of butter along with lots of guns. Now we just get the guns.
The question of criminality, of course, was answered by Nixon himself, when he said it was not a crime if the President does it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejvyDn1TPr8
Even though Nixon was sacked (and pardoned), his criminal principles within the institution of the executive branch were just continued and made more public in subsequent administrations. It's clear Obama has no problem continuing the crimes of George W. Bush, and, in fact, has been escalating them. So we get more boots on the ground in Afghanistan with the Obama administration. Graft is now pretty open, with Obama getting one million from Goldman Sachs for campaign 2008, and then he inks a deal to give the banksters $800 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars.
Anyway, one can only wax nostalgic for Nixon, who had at least some sort of "Lady Macbeth" vestige of conscience with his "I am not a crook" mumblings. With Bush and Obama, you get classic narcissistic traits where torture, endless wars and bankster fiscal policies are carried out with straight faces and no apparent regrets.
Thanks to the machinations of PR firms, spin doctors and a sell-out media, Dembots still believe that Clinton was some kind of economic genius responsible for a budget "surplus." His administration kept two sets of books and looted the Social Security trust fund to help produce that ongoing fiction. Taking economic advice from Slick Willy is like taking lessons in diplomacy from his murderous ("We came, we saw, he died") spouse, Killary.
Got to go all the way back to 1913, the FED was the engine of doom for about a hundred years. The latest group of thugs has put the petal to the metel. This hastens the fall of the Empire, thank goodness.
Just like a film where the crooks are in the vault looting the bank. One has a stop watch as he looks at it he tells the gang to " hurry up we only have two minutes," and they go faster and faster. As the Empire collapses the time left to plunder is reduced so they accelrate it.
Bill Clinton giving advice about the economy , and Henry Kissinger is still giving his opinions on foreign policy.
Just Great
"I did NOT inhale" and "I certainly did not have sexual relations with that woman"...
I can't help remembering that Kissinger and Nixon brought China into world trade again after years behind the Iron Curtain. These days I'm wondering if they did us any favors.
Next from the desk of slick Willy, a self-help book on marital relations.
And he should tell the tale of how a nobody governor can become somebody after colluding with the CIA to import massive quantities of cocaine, which greatly greased the skids for him to be selected president.
What does one say to those who **pay** to listen to his advice on the economy - such as that Canadian city officials that invited Clinton (and GWB!) to speak at some economic meeting?
Wonder if Clinton and Obama (certainly not Bush II) ever question their actions as the United States plunged headlong into hell. It was under their watch it happened--mostly. No doubt they will blame their opponents as dishonest persons always do. Their actions--bail-outs, setting the stage for wars, currency manipulation, facilitating outsourcing, deregulation of investment banks--brought about the catastrophe now encompassing us. At least they ought to beg forgiveness before the people they destroyed (though I, for one, feel disinclined to grant them that).
The great thing about being a sociopath is how well you sleep at night after a day of rape and plunder.
Nah, its just the mentality of the government class. They don't have a fucking clue.
I can't help but (keep) recalling a Yosemite Sam cartoon where he tries to stop an out-of-control mule he was riding. After repeatedly screaming "WHOA", he jumps in front and takes a 2x4 up-side the mules head.
That's exactly what it will take to stop these people. Their pillaging. Their wars. Their homegrown police state. (And it won't be done protesting from the sidewalk.)
And did anyone mention the clinton admin lynching of Brooksley Born when she warned of the danger attendant to the unregulated derivative market? Just as obama was bequeathed the sins of bush admin, the bush admin was bequeathed those of the clinton admin. And what did obama do but surround himself with the clinton economic henchmen--and they have already sent Elizabeth Warren back home. Are there any reformers that can't get the picture here? It would appear that they are all a bunch of gd thieves.
We need journalist in main street media that speak the truth not just what their corporate masters vision of division of American politics and people, united we stand divided we fall and it all goes to the 1%.
Thank you Dean Baker, it needs repeated on nightly TV, and the likes of Clinton, Newt, Delay, Cheney's now siblings getting to talk about the politics of our country like they know more than the rest of us. It is sickening. And I just named a few repug thugs and dims.
Corruption is rampant, always has been, but it is down to the core taking 40 years to get there, but we're there and people are fighting back. Listen up corporate media moguls! We need an Elliott Ness to clean up corruption, the word is mightier than the sword. I would rather be beaten every wee than be subjected to manipulation with cruel/harsh/downgrading/humilating/manipulative words.
"We need journalist in main street media that speak the truth...it needs repeated on nightly TV..."
It's NOT gonna happen that way!
I keep forgetting that no one hates Democrats more than progressives do. Since Bill Clinton is far more popular than any progressive walking the earth, this is problematic.
A fairer accouting would acknowledge that Clinton raised taxes on the rich (which he would not have not if he really worked for the elite), leading to the longest period of sustained economic growth in history, with higher income at all levels and precipitous drops in the poverty rate. NB economic bubbles do not cause the poverty rate to go down.
Clinton also made the government and the military smaller and left office tied with FDR as most popular President of the 20th century. Since this information confutes progressive dogma, progressives ignore it.
You are projecting here. You are the hater, you are the one with hostility toward "progressives" - any who criticize or dissent from Democratic party dogma. It is more accurate to say "no one hates progressives more than Democrats do."
Clinton was no "progressive;" rather, he was certainly a Regressive AND quite complete War Criminal. He should do the planet a favor and drive himself, his wife and daughter off a tall cliff. As for "the longest period of sustained economic growth in history," please bring forth another lie as the period in question began in the 1700s and still continues despite all the current problems.
You mean like when Hillary said that LBJ had been instrumental in getting Civil Rights legislation passed in the '60s and Obama immediately flew to Atlanta to play the race card, telling MLK's former congregation that Hillary had dissed MLK?
You mean like Obama piggybacking on Hillary's pledge to renegotiate NAFTA, telling Ohioans that he too would renegotiate NAFTA while simultaneously sending his senior economic adviser Austan Goolsby to assure Canadian officials his promise was just campaign rhetoric? (Hillary had voted for Senator Dorgan's amendment to the 2005 Commerce Appropriations Bill preventing future NAFTA-like trade deals. Obama had voted against it.)
You mean like telling Democratic primary voters that he was the "anti-war" candidate who would end the Iraq War within 16 months of taking office, while simultaneously helping to defeat the Feingold-Reid Amendment to the 2008 Department of Defense Appropriations Act requiring safe redeployment of all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by June 30, 2008? (Vote taken on 10/3/2007. Hillary voted for it.)
If Perry was critical of Obama in 2008, bravo Perry!
"Since Bill Clinton is far more popular than any progressive walking the earth, this is problematic."
So true, but only in an ironic sense, relative to your intent for writing the sentence.
It really is problematic that the mythology of Bill Clinton, to this day, is so prevalent.
Didn't he push for ratification of NAFTA, and the WTO? That hasn't really worked out so well has it? Add that to your "balance" sheet please.
Give it up Perry-You are making yourself look stupid here like all other sites you post on.. You won't get any slack on this site-The people here are far too intelligent to buy into your hyped up Clinton Bullshit....
OK, I know that Establishment political celebrities, especially ex-presidents making a bundle during the Senior Tour phase of their career, are entitled to a rich (in every sense of the term) assortment of remunerative recreational activities or pastimes in the tradition of classic nobility and aristocracy.
That is, just like princes, princesses, dukes, and earls of old, the superannuated political "quality" are much sought after for-- or can insinuate themselves into-- no end of high-toned nominal employment or avocations: sponsoring social service or educational institutes; heading ostensibly altruistic charitable organizations; consulting with corporations and/or joining executive boards; giving speeches; making TV appearances, etc.
And writing books, of course. And I know that because of the tricks and gimmicks endemic to high-level publishing, there exists an entrenched scam, essentially a social fantasy, purporting that the world is anxious to know the esteemed celebrity's thoughts on profound matters-- or be edified by the celebrity's memoirs and reflections on his or her life and times.
So there is this vast bogus scam that predetermines that the Bill Clintons of the world will write books, that said books will be "best-sellers" before even one copy is off the presses, and that the books will be widely and respectfully hyped and reviewed by the Establishment mass-media commentariat.
But what I'd really like to know is-- not to put too fine a point on it-- what ordinary person would waste money and time plowing through these turkeys, which in all probability are largely ghostwritten in the first place?
Oh, I expect that Bill Clinton's latest book will jump off the shelf and into the baskets of desperate and uninspired shoppers looking for a Christmas gift for that "well-informed" Democratic Babbitt of a spouse or brother-in-law. Or maybe even the local MoveOn coordinator.
And there are a couple of commenters who might sleep out overnight to be one of the first in line for a Slick Willie booksigning at a local bookstore chain-- or, more likely, party fundraising event, if they could afford it.
But otherwise, who the hell reads this crap? And who takes it seriously?
