Does Your Congressperson Represent You – or Israel?
In this time of economic austerity, when jobs are being slashed and Americans are fearful about their future, the Congressional recess is the time for our elected representatives to be home in their districts, reaching out to their constituents and servicing the people they are paid to represent. Instead, this August one out of every five representatives will be taking a junket to Israel, compliments of an affiliate of the Israel lobby AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) but still clocked in on the taxpayer’s dime.
Americans who have lost their jobs and seen their life savings evaporate because Congress can’t seem to get it together deserve an explanation of how this crisis will be solved. Following the recent debt debacle, the public is hungry for information about the mysterious 12-person “super committee” that will slash over one trillion dollars from the federal budget. But instead of opening their doors to their constituents, 81 members of Congress will be getting briefings from Israeli government officials, touring historic religious sites, and perhaps “seeking a salty dip in the Dead Sea.” Representative Steny Hoyer, who is leading the Democratic delegation, said he is pleased members of Congress have this opportunity “to gain a deeper understanding of the issues involved in increasing stability in the region.” One has to wonder whether our elected officials are more concerned about the stability of Israel or the well-being of American families.
Not surprisingly, trip expenses are being paid by an affiliate of the all-powerful AIPAC lobby, the American Israel Educational Foundation. AIPAC lobbies hard to ensure that Israel is kept on the U.S. dole, with $3 billion of US taxpayers’ dollars a year going to the Israeli military. Without AIPAC and the financial contributions to Congressional campaigns made by its affiliate organizations, our representatives would be freer to speak out against funneling precious tax dollars to this already wealthy nation. This junket goes to show that those who claim AIPAC has a stranglehold over our Congress are not far off the mark.
Going on an AIPAC-sponsored trip to Israel is the moral equivalent of using an Anglo-Boer travel company to visit apartheid-era South Africa. Although they claim to be visiting leaders “across the political spectrum”, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, you can bet your bottom dollar that AIPAC will not be giving these 81 Congresspeople a fair and balanced view of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. They won’t observe one of the weekly demonstrations in Bi’lin or Nabi Saleh, where Israeli soldiers routinely tear gas and arrest non-violent protesters. They won’t spend time with grieving Palestinians whose homes have been demolished to make way for more Jewish-only housing. They won’t spend a few hours at a checkpoint to witness how Palestinians are detained, abused and humiliated, or how this “thriving democracy” forbids Palestinians from driving on Jewish-only roads. They won’t go to Gaza, where 1.5 million people are suffering under an unbearable siege, unable to travel freely, conduct business transactions across borders or even rebuild their homes destroyed by the Israeli invasion. And they won’t likely be visiting the burgeoning tent cities in Tel Aviv where hundreds of thousands of Israelis are currently camped out, protesting the lack of affordable housing, gas and food.
With the disapproval rate for Congress at a record 82%, now is not the time for our representatives to pander to AIPAC. Now is not the time for “free” junkets to Israel—with an implicit promise of $3 billion of our taxdollars in return. Now is the time to stop the freefall of the American economy. If our representatives want to earn more respect from the American public, they better prove that their allegiance is not to a foreign government or a group that lobbies on behalf of a foreign government, but to their constituents back home.

Show AllNo I isn't. LOL !
From an authority on the subject, Norman FInklestein, in the film 'Defamation' by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir .....
"The Nazi Holocaust has become the main ideological weapon for launching wars of aggression. It's the suffering [of the Jews] that is used as another pretext or excuse to humiliate, degrade and torture the Palestinians...suffering which is then wrapped in a club and the club is used to crush the skulls of the Palestinians."
Wow, nothing like stating the obvious!

Representative democracy isn't working.

The corruption by Zionists to human society is astounding. Want to know when we'll be free? When Israel is dissolved, and Zionists are forced to pay reparations to the corrosion that have brought on the world.
I think that most congress persons pay much more heed to the Zionis State than they ever pay to their own voters. Like all those who applauded the freedom flotilla massacre. I'll never again vote for them for any position.
We would have to be very naive to think that AIPAC is really paying with their own money for this love fest. As many millions and billions of US funds that have been siphoned off in places like Iraq and Afghanistan should be the guide. The Israelis are more slick and can easily siphon off millions from the $3 billion we send every year. That is funneled back to AIPAC, WINEP, and a couple other lobbying organizations for the Zionists of the Likkud party. I have to presume each and every member of Congress that arrived was given a pair of knee pads so he could grovel properly in front of Netanyahu. These members have what is called a "tin ear" in the US. In Israel, it's called "Chutzpah" or Shameless audacity. It hasn't been that many years ago when Taiwan gave free trips to all top level officials in the US including members of Congress
Seriously, what is the real point of these junkets?
No one and I mean NOT ONE PERSON in the US government has ever dared to stand up to Israel.
Not one ever and the votes reflect it.
So, really we have to ask ourselves what is the purpose/meaning of these trips?
Symbolism.
What does it exactly signify though?
To show the world that we're subservient to Israeli interests?
To show the Arab world in particular that we're dedicated to bringing about the end of their world?
Much like the already mentioned standing ovations for Netanyahu, these acts are powerfully symbolic not just on realpolitik levels but on levels only the elite could understand.
Our leaders are "all in" concerning their visions of global domination - whatever shape they may take - and the glaring ANOMALY that is the United States' subservience to Israel is a vital piece of those visions.
This article has less to do with Zionism than with the power of lobbies. It is inappropriate for any entity to pay for a trip abroad for any US elected official. Representatives can learn about foreign affairs the same way I do: research and by consulting knowledgeable people. It's just another example of corruption--nothing more.
Those who do not speak out about inequality or tyrants are doomed, I fought for this country and am a Veteran, When I read some of these blogs I wonder why I fought for the United States.
I cannot condone all of this anti- Israeli rhetoric and surely feel that the Arab World has mostly not stood up for the Palestinian People except to distort the truth of the events of 1948 and after.
The Middle East is a great tragedy and I wish the people who really want and deserve Peace and not Tyranny achieve that goal..
In reality there is only one Democracy in the Middle East and all of the other countries are owned by the extremely rich and that is because of OIL.
Shalom
Demondade49
I suspect that the reason why you "fought for the United States" was for the same reason why I and my uncle ended up in Vietnam those many years ago and that was to justify the lies that were given to us by our less than truthful government.
I also suspect that you may not like this but "all of this anti-Israeli rhetoric" that you are complaining about is most certainly justified due to Israel's horrific treatment of the Palestinian people.
"...I wonder why I fought for the United States."
But you didn't. ;)
You may THINK that you did.
But you didn't.
Have fun with that fact.
More a theocracy for the rich than "only democracy" and run by the same forces that run the USA, the Bankster's War Machine.
Shalom, if we can find it and we have to find it on our own now.
Jim Glover,
Yep. And those congress critters down in Isreal are planning their coordinated push for war with Iran.
I guess they want to make sure wikileaks isn't privy to the conpiracy of lies and propaganda techniques scheduled to bombard the USA just as congress is shafting our social programs.
Well posters here have been sayin that about a big war with Iran for all the many years I have been here.
Ron Paul thinks that is insane and since he took that stand, he just came in a close second few hundred votes behind Bachman even with "God on her side".
Israel could start a war with Iran, but that would be suicidal and I don't think the War Machine is that crazy.
So we'll see.
I am one of those persons who sounded the warning that an invasion could be near. It was damn near several times, and it is a damn near thing now. I hope you are correct, but Israel is pushing dam hard right now. Oh of course we will see. We will have no choice but to see. We got got to see whether the USA would bomb Libya and we got see whether the USA would invade Iraq.
And I am about the only person who thought all those giving the warning including anyone reading the paper were playing on our fear.
It is good to fear war, but the war mongers are trying to convince us that a war with Iran is in our interest.
My reasoning is a big difference between Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya when the official word was it would be a quick war and now the cost of the wars has come home, killing good people all over the world and bringing down any real hope of recovery.
The military and intel knows a war with Iran is a different story, they have the means of what is the equivalent to MAD, they now call it UD, unacceptable damage, to Israel and the US Navy including Oil shipments through the narrow Straights which would further destroy the economy for a long time.
So If you hope I am right, I hope you are not the only one and if I am wrong maybe the US and Israel can learn next time.
That is my unpopular reasoning.
I certainly hope you're right. Unfortunately when it comes to things like MAD, or the newer UD, the idea that there will be peace relies on the notion that the nations are led by sane people. I don't think that is the case with Israel, or the USA, or any other nation for that matter.
Well, No matter how insane one thinks all nation's leaders are, It is up to us, the people to encourage and support peace all the more.
Looking for the bad tends to bring more bad.
What a reactionary diatribe by medea, again.
She presents us with a false dichotomy and loads of assumptions as well.
The first assumption is that diplomatic relations with the State of Israel is a bad thing.
No mention of the fact that wikileaks gave us files that show that Palestinian leadership is in league with Israel in the suppression of the Palestinian people.
Another common fallacy that she commits is that the State of Israel is one and the same as the Israeli peoples and speaks for them. The protests these past weeks show this to be patently untrue..
Ultimately medea is beating a nationalistic and isolationist drum. Stating that a country should look after itself first and only.
Shouldn't we recognise humanity across borders ?
How about we do away with nations altogether?
"Another common fallacy that she commits is that the State of Israel is one and the same as the Israeli peoples and speaks for them. The protests these past weeks show this to be patently untrue.."
If you think the protests are at all in any way about the treatment of the Palestinians, you are wrong. These are middle class Israelis that want cheaper cottage cheese and better housing. They couldn't as a group give a rat's ass about a starving Palestinian child.
I don't think that at all.
But thanks for putting words in my mouth as well as trying to divide and conquer the masses again.
And here is a comprehensive report on the protests in Israel , with interviews.
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2011/aug2011/isra-a10.shtml
Ah yes, anyone who says things you disagree with is out to divide and conquer the masses. But not you. Nope.
Not at all.
I just don't like people putting words in my mouth.
And yes, I don't like identity politics of any kind.
I'm a marxist, which I've never hidden and I put forward the view that there is more than one way to look at events and society, and that is by class and not by ethnicity or country.
I'm a marxist, which I've never hidden and I put forward the view that there is more than one way to look at events and society, and that is by class and not by ethnicity or country."
Heh. It is pretty obvious from your posts. What hardcore anti-identitist don't get (and BTW, I am sympathetic to your viewpoint, just not wholly in agreement with it), is that class is ALSO a form of identity. It might be a type of identity politics that appeals particularly to you, or even me, but it IS also identity politics.
"Another common fallacy that she commits is that the State of Israel is one and the same as the Israeli peoples and speaks for them. The protests these past weeks show this to be patently untrue.. "
No they don't.
The protests in Israel is a start and larger in proportion than any protests here for the interests of our own people.
Indirectly it is against apartheid and the War Machine since the War Economy is what is hurting the people all over the world.
Very rarely do people protest in mass against their own government in a war mentality, but when endless war squeezes them, things tend to change.
Of course they are not protesting to free Palestine, in Israel that would get them locked up, but it is a start for change.
Mine is a corporate hack who is constantly representing corporate America. He does not represent me. Can't say about Israel. It would out of character for a Congresscritter or Senator not to have on a choke collar and be led around on a leash by Israel.
Take it easy, the majority of Jews are not in the CEO ruling class you cite here but we apparently do have more in proportion to the population historically and because of this we do stick together against exaggeration which has lead to great slaughter and persecution historically. Like Einstein said, "there are no secrets".
So, we have a kind of socialist collective gene for survival and maybe Israel will get it together before America because of this and the protests in Israel tells me they know the War Economy is hurting them and most of the people everywhere.
Both my senators and my representative are extremely strong supporters of izrael, at least the zionist part and I am sure they could give a flying rats ass about the 'other part', the jews and other ethnics, that live in the actual state of Palestine.
Those members of congress from my state are quite well know for their support of izrael and corporations just as o indicated in june2008 both had the full support and fealty of the u.s.
RE: Does Your Congressperson Represent You – or Israel?
What a dumb question from someone who should know better! Congress only plays "our representatives" on TV. They represent the ruling (corporate) class. And US ruling class wants a garrison state in the Mid-East to watch over all the US's puppet states to keep the life blood of capitalism flowing, that is, "our" oil safe. There's no tail (Israel) wagging the dog here. It's a mutually beneficial relationship. Neither the Jewish nor American people have anything to say about it.
Of course nobody approves of congress., we didn't elect most of these people in these fixed elections. Countries all over the world have Single Payer. South Africa just voted it in this week. A whopping majority of Americans want it, need it, are dying for it. Yet we keep electing Repubs and Blue Dogs that stand against it. Yeah right. It's obvious that the elections are rigged. Anyone could see it on the subject of health care alone. Americans are completely dim witted if they think otherwise.
United States Drops Behind South Africa Among Civilized Nations
http://my.firedoglake.com/ruthcalvo/2011/08/12/united-states-drops-behind-south-africa-among-civilized-nations/
The answer is simple, Israel owns the United States of America, she runs owns the most important and influential businesses in this country, she openly interferes in our electoral system, our politicians are scared of her, she dictates our foreign policies and every candidate running as President has to appear before AIPAC, the most powerful Jewish Lobby in America, and pledge his loyalty to Israel before starting his campaign. I have grown accustomed to this, heck, why not make Israel the 51st State and be done with it.
Any proof of your conspiracy theory?
It is not a "conspiracy theory", every American knows this.
It is not a "conspiracy theory", every American knows this. I know that is not acceptable to criticize Israel in this country. Folks like you who support Israel immediately go into attack mode the minute the real relationship between America and Israel is revealed. Well, I will repeat, the tail is wagging the dog, Israel rules America.
In the 2010 election for congressman from my districe, former NYC mayor Ed Koch, a democrat supported the republican candidate, George Phillips over democratic incumbent Maurice Hinchey because Koch said that Hinchey didn't support Israel. What Koch meant was that he criticized Israel, thus qualifying him as an anti-Semite.
Do you know that every person who runs for Mayor of New York City has to visit Israel?
I've heard that Israel gets more aid from the US than sub Saharan Africa, The Caribbean, South & Central America and Mexico combined, overall thousands of dollars per person in Israel.
This is from the (YouTube) video Occupation 101 Besatzung 101 Part 7. It says that we gave, total US Aid 1949-1996, $62.5 billion each, but Israel's population was only 5.8 million, while these other vast regions have a population of 1,050 million, so it's $10,775 per person in Israel vs $59 per person in these vast poor farming regions. That's 1/3 of all US aid going to Israel.
