Stop Sacrificing US Soldiers for Afghan Debacle
The 38 deaths in Saturday’s helicopter crash in Afghanistan include 31 Americans, making this the deadliest day for U.S. forces since the war began. The tragic loss of American lives might be worth the sacrifice if it was making America safer, or if our presence was significantly improving the well-being of the Afghan people. But neither of these is true.
The fatal crash late on Friday in the Wardak province was the deadliest yet for US forces after nearly ten years of war in Afghanistan. Let’s tell President Obama that the best way to pay tribute to the soldiers who have died—and to address our financial crisis--is to bring the rest of the troops home.
Our presence in Afghanistan is not making us safer because Afghanistan is not a threat to us. This was clearly acknowledged by a senior Obama administration official in a background briefing to reporters on June 21.“United States hasn't seen a terrorist threat from Afghanistan, for the past seven or eight years,” he said. He noted that Al Qaeda had moved on to Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia.
Meanwhile, thanks to President Obama’s surge, over 100,000 U.S. troops are bogged down chasing an indigenous Afghan ragtag army, the Taliban, which has no interest in attacking anyone inside the United States. The only reason they are attacking U.S. soldiers is that U.S. soldiers are occupying their country.
The truth is that the presence of foreign forces gives the Taliban its raison d’etre. Every time NATO forces kill Afghan citizens, the Taliban benefits. And that happens all the time. In fact, the very day the helicopter was shot down, August 2, NATO troops attacked a house in southern Helmand province and “inadvertently killed eight members of a family, including women and children.” You can bet that the some of their relatives will soon be placing IEDs along the road to blow up U.S. tanks.
The Taliban have learned to downplay their unpopular fundamentalist ideology and take advantage of this popular discontent. Look at the case of In Wardak province, where the helicopter crashed. The Taliban had disappeared for several years, fleeing to Pakistan from 2002-2005. But capitalizing on the local anger about civilian casualties caused by NATO forces and anger at corrupt politicians, the Taliban returned and rebuilt, maintaining a stronghold in a province that borders Kabul.

Show AllHow many afghans have died?
Are they not worth stopping the fighting for?
Of course, the word fighting assumes there are two or more aggressors involved in a fight.
In reality this is really unprovoked violence on the part of the "allies" and not a fight at all.
SOOO, next election, DON'T VOTE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
So, who are you going to vote for, the folks that started the wars? That being the Rethuglicons, which have used the wars to run this country over a friggin' cliff? WTF are you saying?! There's barely any of the congress critters, Rethuglicon or Democrap that you would want to 'have over' for lunch, but voting in more terrorists will only hasten you demise, maam. These pricks would have you rot in hell, before they would acknowledge your lowly existence. Or maybe we like eating out of a gutter or standing in line for health care that won't be there when we get to the head. Or maybe, just maybe the D's are as bad as the R's, or maybe the Mayans were correct. Vote for Michele Bachmann in 2012 and prove them right. We're toast, got jelly!
The answer to this is extremely simple: vote third party. EVERY time you vote for a Republican or a Democrat you are voting to continue the current government. You can rationalize all you want about doing the less-bad thing, but you are still voting for the bad thing, and you are still to blame. Your rationalizations do not help a thing except the continuation of current policy.
--"How many afghans have died?"
I logged in to type in this very comment ! A single U.S. life is worth a thousand Afghan lives. We still have ways to go ...
Why do we have over 1000 military bases around the world?
Close down all military bases outside of the United States.
Bring home all the troops and put them to work rebuilding the infrastructure.
Keeps the money here and makes fiscal accountability easier.
It doesn't do any cause any good to exaggerate. There are over "700 bases" not on native soil. "Close down all military bases outside of the United States.
Bring home all the troops and put them to work rebuilding the infrastructure.
Keeps the money here and makes fiscal accountability easier." Yes, do that please but get the facts straight. Thanx
Also, end the "War on Drugs". Treat drug the way that we treat alcohol abuse. Release all non-violent drug offenders.
Repeal the entire "Patriot Act", and end "Warrantless Surveillence".
Not the same guys, but of the same unit; from reports I have read...
"None of the 22 SEAL personnel killed in the crash were part of the team that killed bin Laden in a May raid in Pakistan, but they belonged to the same unit." AP
Osama Bin Laden. This was gonna be a do over so that the story told to the public more believable.
This time the patsy would be armed and they would find a dialysis machine on site.
And they would "keep the body on ice" so that approved Scientists could ask for dna samples and agree it was really for sure osama.
Isn't it a volunteer army? Coercion? Not likey. bad article. Dying for large corporations like the energy companites really ain't worth it. Screw the TAPI pipeline, it will never be built.
Medea,
Of course, we will all agree here that we should withdraw from Afghanistan. IMO, though, we should stop using false terms of discussion, thereby playing into the official story of the MIC. We are not there to "make us safer", so if our actions fail to make us safer, the argument from that premise doesn't carry any weight in terms of effect on policy. Also, if the war is "unwinnable", it must be specified what "winning" means. It's one of those words that has a convenient "charge" in terms of propaganda, but as we hone in closer to the truth, we will see that it is really about a kind of "winning" that combat-booted military/corporate types would like to see...a corporate colony in a strategic location.
Bringing the troops home because we are not "winning" or because it is not "making us safer", I'm afraid, will carry little weight in the strategic councils of empire. Appealing to Obama on these grounds can only be, at most, embarrassing to him as he is the mouthpiece of the official story. But (sorry to say), he is well insulated from progressive criticism and suggestions.
I am in no way denigrating your fine, important, and courageous work. I'm only trying to bring in just a little more "real".
Right on! Excellent post!
Exactly! I think Medea was trying to get her point across without infuriating the majority of Americans who are brainwashed into thinking that all soldiers are heroes in the service of Freedom and Democracy. Nothing could be further from the truth! Ray McGovern's article is so much more courageous and close to the truth. Is Medea sending a mixed message or is she just mixed up?
a soldier's voice box reports...
(from truth's cornerstone sentry)...
(he voluntarily joined and signed on with his life...
fulfilling his promise to serve...
but now all he gets is them turning their backs...
as they change that intent of their words!)...
(he's seen too much ruin for his heart to keep hidden...
or threaten his conscience to betray unfeigned integrity...
so while big shots defile those bottom lines of common decency...
a soldier's voice box reports from truth's cornerstone sentry!)...
"is this how a country like ours should be run?...
shall an army defend outright lies?...
is breath and blood worth less than dishonest men?...
whose con jobs bring further demise!"...

they'll pull big bucks from cheap knitted hats!...
then take soldiers' well-being and saw it in half...
and levitate lame excuses at that!"...
"they've staged fake events to be president...
with production crews setting up scenes!...
hence now when it's down to the real deal...
they're clueless to what truth even means!"...
"they treat fellow cronies like diamond mine veins...
donning kid gloves with gold-plated linings!...
while serial numbers become stock market quotes...
under disposable ticker tape timing!"...

depicting top-shelf bread-winners themselves...
but food packet rations still cover that bill...
made by middlemen's credit-lined stealth!"...

they've been fingered for treasonous crimes!...
it's reason enough they'll keep long lengths between...
thoughts on redress of grievance in mind!"...

though camouflage flaws lay decayingly plain...
to commandeer basic training's most honorable brawn...
through tour-dutied dirty work for their own shameful brains!"...
(had he not maintained that conviction of courage...
to keep his upstanding frame free from greed's shiny hasp...
this soldier might well have bought into high office...
among colleagues who value deception's wide grasp!)...

Nice poem! Thank you.
Let 'em stay. When things really finally go south, the American citizenry will be safer at home with them overseas. Think about it. Whose side do you think they'll be on? (The one that pays them, Washington –of course.)
That is a very valid statement..
Unfortunately, they are not just hanging around in Afghanistan.
Stop euphemizing these mercenaries as soldiers.
The military is the oligarchy's job program.
Maybe the real question is how many more innocent men, women and children would Obama's hired assassins murder and maim in their nightly mayhem?
The only way we can tell Obama anything is through civil disobedience. Support soldiers who resist the war, support Bradley Manning, occupy DC on October 6, find any way you can to throw a monkey wrench in the works of the machine. Sending a letter to Obama is like shoveling s**t against the tide.
for iraq veterans against war...
truth lives among our soldiers who refuse to let it die!...
the kind whose inborn conscience fights to stop these wars of lies!...
each serviceman who knows how fatal blows won't end those means...
that keep men's deadly reasons from seeing life in real scenes!...
they watch a world of leaders still pretend to play false gods...
wearing know-it-all mentalities that have yet to learn they're not!...
for pockets stuffed with body counts will never feel like gold...
around a sense of touch that bears aliveness by its hold!...
they see dying victims lying on these floors of walls of war!...
welcome mats in neighborhoods smell horror's putrid core!...
pouring over auras under shrouds of human waste...
in rigor mortis cobblestone kicked farther out of place!...
they hear abducted landscapes being swept from civil tongues...
booming demolition moving in where towns belong!...
root-based shoots upheaving in between tight cracks of clay...
catastrophically erode outside the groundwork words might lay!...
they tuck those aftershocks in every space their minds may find!...
blocking out bright light that fades sharp contrast over time...
for until the dark exposes these stark negatives in full...
it hinders mankind's sunrise to develop better rules!...
soldiers dare to face the consequence it takes to turn this tide!...
as it's from their brave positions waves of change begin to try!...
and once first steps are followed by successive ones in line...
remember it's these few who knew what most didn't realize!...
What debacle? The boss class MIC scumbags revel in the profits.
STOP SACRIFICING U.S. SOLDIERS FOR AFGHAN DEBACLE? Medea, you mean right but I am afraid you still do not get it yet! The U.S. soldiers are being sacrificed for one thing and one thing only: The greed of the war profiteers. They love the debacle! They love the war racket! Why wouldn't they ? They are raking in billions of $$$$$$ in profits! The war in Afghanistan is anything but a debacle to them.
It's time to stop it! Bring the troops back home, and invest in people's lives.
We have to take to the streets. we're taking over Washington, DC - this Octbober 6th, on the 10th anniversary of the US invasion into Afghanistan.
Will you join us?

Geeze, critics. Do you know Medea? Believe me, she gets it. She is easily the bravest, most intelligent, most well-informed, and hardest working peace activist I know. She speaks and writes from firsthand experience in very dangerous places and she has spent her life and career working harder than anyone against the establishment to make this world a more peaceful, just place.
So Bravo Medea! As usual, thanks for educating me on some things I didn't know. I am so upset we are not out of there and saddened by every loss of life. The President is an intelligent man, so I still have hope that he will see the light and get us out if he can ever get over the politics of it all. Thanks so much for working so hard to help him and others to see the light. You continue to me my hero. Lots of Love, Ben
Not sure but I think my sarcasm detector just blew up.
Really! Mine is in pieces on the floor.
You have a volunteer army, supported by a stunningly huge majority of the population (something like 90 per cent). These "sacrifices" sacrificed themselves for whatever reasons. They aren't conscripts. The people they kill, however, are often "collateral damage", dead because they lived in the wrong place at the wrong place. Conscripts of the logic of violence that rules our species. Don't appease the military-groupies who see institutionalised violence as "heroism". Violence, freelance and institutionalised, is the evil: that's what needs to be fought.
Children in my neck of the woods join the military because it is literally the only job in town, and because their families cannot afford to send them to college. The poverty draft is real, and should not be dismissed. How many thousand advertisements to enlist has a child seen by the time he or she enters high school? A freshman in the first week of school one year said a recruiter told her the Army would send her to the Rhode Island School of Design to study architecture. What is an Army recruiter doing talking to a 14 year old girl?
Harsh blunt words ThinkingOutside, that need to be spoken, but it will not win you any popularity contests. The glorification of all things military is now firmly entrenched in our culture. Somehow, it is considered treasonous to challenge anything about the military. Voices like yours are a threat to the empire and to the MIC.
It doesn't seem to occur to most people that if one truly valued life, militarism would be a last resort for a civilized society, not standard operating procedure. But then, who ever said we were civilized? No offense to primates, but most of us are just stupid apes.
Medea is addressing the standard government line urging U.S. citizens to support a surge of more troops into Afghanistan, and to accept a token drawdown which leaves tens of thousands in the field. Here's why this particular communication is necessary: yesterday my husband and I were at the home of a friend. A thirty-ish guest who is a hedge fund manager got into a discussion with my husband over the need for the U.S. to stay in Afghanistan forever. The rationale offered by this recipient of inherited wealth: "they" hate "us" and will come "over here" to kill us unless we fight them there. As to why they hate us, according to this fool it is because of what the U.S. has done to the people of Afghanistan in the past. This is an educated rich kid from Mass. talking. (By the way, he also says entitlements must be dialed way back in order to fund the endless war on terror.)
I appreciate Medea, my husband, and everyone who is willing to have a civil discussion to help educate a public totally bewildered by propaganda. Each of us will go about this task in our own way. Recently a big organizer in Germany told me the peace movement in Europe envies our ability to work together "because the Left in Europe is too busy excommunicating each other." I believe redjeffrey exposes this tactic nicely in his comment on this article. Who is really working against the movement with this sort of divisive talk, Jeffrey?
It is our collective wisdom that will lead us out of the wilderness.
Thank you Medea! Right on, as usual. I still want you to run for President.
Love,
Jes

i have now arrived at this dead end:
War and Wars will never end.
America will.
America is an Imperial Dictatorship abroad, and a not so benign Democracy at home.
i am sorry for the Afghan people. We did not save you. You are just one more piece on the GeoPolitical Chessboard. Thank you for your sacrifices. Private Corporations and the Pentagon have been paid well at your expense. Your present, past, and future is to keep dying.
U.S.A. U.S.A. U.S.A.
paradox of deeds...
loyal young lie moments from... those fighting steps to death...
under names instilled within their brains... to have them 'be their best'...
they looked ahead from days now dead... insurance sold to youth...
invincible their young eyes saw... till blood men showed them truth...
how different front lines change the mind... from boot camps stamping 'follow me'...
when seeing skies through other eyes... becomes a lie in infantry...
surviving skills put to the test... in battles on his soul...
whip the dread of 'kill the rest'... which made the soldier whole...
lessons wrought when preachers taught... those kids their golden rule...
sneak outside from where they hide... like questions meant to fool...
down-sized arrows pierce inside... and hit the bull's-eye knot...
as leaking veins collapse in pain... leaving open wounds to rot...
what's left tides over soldier's time... treading water on a wave...
in seas of big shots' apathy... for finding ways to save...
false towers built by self-made power... crumble neath their spell...
of 'right is might' by some men's light... held in that height from hell...
tales tell them... 'do it well... as those before you did'...
while memories of old sympathies... emerge from where they hid...
the enemy's sight of family ties... gets beaten up by second-thoughts...
as faces lose the human race... when saving grace is the guy who lost...
blood lines to what's left behind... back in someone's home...
let the despair of not being there... drip on dying bones...
the war within the soldier's core... strips life from broken seed...
what they go through... for who knows who... is the paradox of deeds!...

To paraphrase Alexander Cockburn:
"Indeed, the best outcome for the left in 2008 would have been a victory for McCain, Obama’s Republican opponent. McCain! But, you wail, he would have plunged America into new wars, kept Guantanamo open, launched an onslaught on entitlements, surrendered to Wall Street and the banks… (ehhh!)
McCain would have tried all these things, but maybe he would have quailed amid a storm of public protest. Under W. Bush’s two terms the spirit of opposition throve; the antiwar movement flourished; the labor movement was active; blacks militant. Amid a brilliant campaign mounted by the AFL-CIO, Bush’s hopes to gut social programs were dead within months of the start of his second term in 2004. But since 2008 a Democratic president has neutralized all these constituencies.
"
Susan, since you ran for Senator in (1998?) on the Green Party ticket, how about challenging DiFi next year in the Democratic primary? I'd love to help run a campaign like that! Ads with you fighting the disastrous deregulation of energy in Cal.while DiFi supported it. What would Saul Levine think?
