Congrats to the Gang of Six, the Powerful, the Wealthy, and Multinational Corporations
If there was ever a time in the modern history of America that the American people should become engaged in what's going on here in Washington, now is that time. Decisions are being made that will impact not only our generation but the lives of our children and our grandchildren for decades to come, and I fear very much that the decisions being contemplated are not good decisions, are not fair decisions.
There is increased understanding that that defaulting for the first time in our history on our debts would be a disaster for the American economy and for the world's economy. We should not do that.
There also is increased discussion about long-term deficit reduction and how we address the crisis which we face today of a record-breaking deficit of $1.4 trillion and a $14 trillion-plus national debt.
One of the long-term deficit reduction plans came from the so-called Gang of Six. We do not know all of the details of that proposal. In fact, we never will know because a lot of the decisions are booted to committees to work out the details.
It is fair to say, however, that Senators Coburn, Senator Crapo and Chambliss deserve congratulations. Clearly, they have won this debate in a very significant way. My guess is that they will probably get 80 percent or 90 percent of what they wanted. In this town, that is quite an achievement, but they have stood firm in their desire to represent the wealthy and the powerful and multinational corporations. They have threatened. They have been smart. They have been determined. And at the end of the day, they will get almost all of what they want. That is their victory, and I congratulate them.
Unfortunately, their victory will be a disaster for working families in this country, for the elderly, for the sick, for the children and for low-income people.
Based on the limited information that we have, I think it is important to highlight some of what is in this so-called Gang of Six proposal that the corporate media, among others, are enthralled about.
Some may remember that for a number of years, leading Democrats said that we will do everything that we can to protect Social Security, that Social Security has been an extraordinary success in our country, that for 75 years, with such volatility in the economy, Social Security has paid out every nickel owed to every eligible American. I heard Democrats say that Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. That is right because Social Security is funded by the payroll tax, not by the U.S. Treasury. Social Security has a $2.6 trillion surplus today. It can pay out every benefit owed to every eligible American for the next 25 years. It is an enormously popular program. Poll after poll from the American people says doesn't cut Social Security. Two and a half years ago when Barack Obama, then a senator from Illinois, ran for president of the United States, he made it very clear if you voted for him there would be no cuts in Social Security.
What Senators Coburn, Crapo and Chambliss have managed to do in the Gang of Six is reach an agreement where there will be major cuts in Social Security. Don't let anybody kid you about this being some minor thing. It is not. What we are talking about is that Social Security cuts would go into effect virtually immediately. Ten years from now, the typical 75-year-old person will see their Social Security benefits cut by $560 a year. The average 85-year-old will see a cut of $1,000 a year. Now, for some people here in Washington, maybe the big lobbyists who make hundreds of thousands a year, $560 a year or $1,000 a year may not seem like a lot of money, but if you are a senior trying to get by on $14,000, $15,000, $18,000 a year and you're 85 years old, the end of your life, you're totally vulnerable, you're sick -- a $1,000 per year cut in what you otherwise would have received is a major, major blow.
So I congratulate Senator Coburn, Senator Crapo, Senator Chambliss for doing what president Obama said would not happen under his watch, what the Democrats have said would not happen under their watch.
But it's not just Social Security. We have 50 million Americans today who have no health insurance at all. Under the Gang of Six proposals, there will be cuts in Medicare over a 10-year period of almost $300 billion. There will be massive cuts in Medicaid and other health care programs. There will be caps on spending, which mean that there will be major cuts in education. If you are a working-class family, hoping that you're going to be able to send your kid to college and thinking that you will be eligible for a Pell grant, think twice about that. Pell grants may not be there. If you're a senior who relies on a nutrition program, that nutrition program may not be there. If you think it's a good idea that we enforce clean air and clean water provisions so that our kids can be healthy, those provisions may not be there because there will be major cuts in environmental protection.
Some people think that's not so good, but at least our Republican friends are saying we need revenue and we're going to get $1 trillion in revenue. But wait a minute,. If you read the proposal, there are very, very clear provisions making sure that we are going to make massive cuts in programs for working families, for the elderly, for the children. Those cuts are written in black and white. What about the revenue? Well, it's kind of vague. The projection is that we would rise over a 10-year period $100 billion in revenue. Where is that going to come? Is it necessarily going to come from the wealthiest people in this economy? Is it going to come from large corporations who are enjoying huge tax breaks? That is not clear at all. I want middle-class families to understand that when we talk about increased revenues, do you know where that comes from? It may come from cutbacks in the home mortgage interest deduction program, which is so very important to millions and millions of families. It may mean that if you have a health care program today, that health care program may be taxed. That's a way to raise revenue. It may be that there will be increased taxes on your retirement programs, your I.R.A.'s, your 401(k)'s. But we don't have the details for that. All we have is some kind of vague promise that we're going to raise $1 trillion over the next 10 years, no enforcement mechanism and no clarity as to where that revenue will come from.
That is why it is so terribly important that the American people become engaged in this debate which will have a huge impact on them, on their parents and on their children. The American people must fight for a fair deal. At a time when the wealthiest people in this country are doing phenomenally well and their effective tax rate is the lowest on record, at a time when the top 400 individuals in this country own more wealth than 150 million Americans, at a time when corporate profits are soaring and in many instances corporations, these same corporations pay nothing in taxes, at a time when we have tripled military spending since 1997, there are fair ways to move toward deficit reduction which do not slash programs that working families and children and the elderly desperately depend upon.
This senator is going to fight back. I was not elected to the United States Senate to make devastating cuts in Social Security, in Medicare, in Medicaid, in children's programs while lowering tax rates for the wealthiest people in this country.

One of Obama's catfood commissioners (Goldwine) appeared on NPR today to explain the "chained Consumer Price Index (CPI)" that the commssion contrived last year and is now being included in the devious "deficit reduction" package that Obama and Congress are pushing through.
The commissioner explained that when the market price of an item increases, the current CPI increases. The "chained CPI" will assume that when the price of an item increases that consumers find an alternative. Examples include 1) substituting catfood for meat (or if it gets too bad, eating neighborhood dogs, cats, squirrels, etc.), 2) substituting no insurance for insurance, 3) substituting illness for medical treatment, or 4) substituting hitchiking for a bus ride.
We now know how Obama's catfood commission got its name.
RAY: Sad as it is... thanks for the laugh. I remember people did eat their rabbits in Michael Moore's film, "Roger & Me." Detroit was reduced to a fiscal black-hole virtually overnight when GM violated the implicit contract it held with the families living there.
I believe that was Flint, Siouxrose. Detroit came soon thereafter...:(
Interesting, if you can't afford your Partents/Grandparents, Do we drop them off at BofA where the moneys is? or are they gonna just convert the reflecting pond between the Washington and Lincon memorials into a mass grave, First come first serve?? Gotta love how noone if fighting this not AARP, not ACLU, not nobody! >^^<
Great black humor, Ray.
"Unfortunately, their victory will be a disaster for working families in this country, for the elderly, for the sick, for the children and for low-income people."
Should read:
"Unfortunately, their victory will be a disaster for the country".
This is because working families, the elderly, the sick, the children and low-income people are the majority of the population.
Other than that small correction, thank you very much for speaking truth to power Mr. Sanders. You must feel VERY lonely in your fight for us in the Senate.
The damage will go way beyond the workers, poor and elderly.
The "chained Consumer Price Index (CPI)" will further understate the true rate of inflation, thereby keeping interest rates too low, giving unregulated speculators more cheap money to drive up the price of food and energy, create more commodity bubbles that burst and demand ever larger taxpayer funded unconditional bailouts of corporations, while taking down more small businesses.
Young Americans who are already experiencing a higher unemployment rate than any age group will have fewer and fewer job opportunities as more baby boomers react to Social Security and Medicare gutting by canceling retirement from their family wage jobs.
This puts me in a mind of the last depression, I think it was Clyde Barrow who when asked why he robbed Banks he stated "Because that's where the money is" Amazing how everything old becomes new again! >^^<
Look at the distribution of wealth in this country. Go to:
http://www.extremeinequality.org/
Click on "Data & Statistics" and select "Wealth Inequality". The pie charts show the distribution of wealth and stock ownership. It's sickening. It also shows that the total wealth of the Forbes 400 richest Americans is 1.37 trillion. What will they contribute.
Go to:

Click on "Wealth, power, and income" and, again, page down to the pie charts.
Why does my comment stick on "Edit"?
When Obama mentions the "tax reform" component of "deficit reduction" he is referring to a reduction in corporate taxes for megacorporations that are currently subject to a negative tax rate. in other words, those corporations that currently get a taxpayer funded check each year in return for filling out a tax return will get bigger checks in the future.
In order to fund these checks, the rest of us will be paying HIGHER taxes.
At least we have one Senator who believes that Congress should keep the promise of Social Security. The "Gang of six" should aptly be renamed "The Gang of Goons!"
Congress is getting ready to "sell out" the elderly and sick who have worked their entire lives accrung the benefits of the PROMISE of Social Security and health care!!
If this passes, Obama should never get another vote from a Democrat!!!!
And through all this discussion and "brew-ha-ha" there isn't a word mentioned about rescinding the tax cuts of the uber-rich!!!
Furthermore, I am sick and tired of hearing the Congress refer to Social Security as an "Entitlement Program!!!! It is NO SUCH THING!!!!! It is a program the we pay into all our working lives in order to live a respectable, worry-free old age!!!
If this goes through, OBAMA WILL NEVER GET ANOTHER VOTE FROM THIS SENIOR CITIZEN, AND I MIGHT ADD, ALL OF HIS RETIRED FRIENDS!!! FURTHERMORE, ALL SENIORS MUST DO THE SAME!!!!!
FrankS: This senior made her mind up that Obama was a dud before he was elected! There were a lot of us who either voted for a third party or skipped that line on the ballot. And I can honestly say that finding out that he was even worse than I expected was not a pleasant experience. I certainly will not vote for him next time, either, and I'm pleased to see that so many former Obamabots have changed their minds.
re. entitlement: An entitlement is something you are entitled to either by birth or by work. It is yours by right. What's your problem?
In my comment I was distinguishing between sources of income. I view entitlement programs to be those such as "Welfare" and "Medicaid" which every Americn may be "entitled to" when going through a "rough spot" in life (I worked for Social Services for a number of years). As opposed the Social Security payments which are actually "earnings" saved up by recipients throughout their working lives.
Bernie never mentions that even after this shell games plays out the deficit will at best not be reduced at all. In view of the ever expanding military and other corpoate welfare programs you would be safe in betting your last nickle that the deficit will grow much larger.
The goal of the DC drama of the past month has really been wealth transfer, not deficit reduction.
And the wealth transfer can also be called TRIBUTE that the conquered nation (a.k.a. we the people) pays to the all-conquering global EMPIRE ( of the organized, corporate/financier crime syndicate).
And the prez is just an EMPIRE-appointed viceroy, in charge of the U.S. colony (a.k.a. we the people).
A very good assessment. The people behind the throne are no more American than the Mongols were Chinese. And the American people are nothing but potential cheap labor, once they've been broken.
That's my worry, I'm already crippled by work, just not enough for SSI, so I have my little make work job till my back collapes compleatly. then I guess it's off to soilent green land?!?!
I find this unacceptable I served this country (US Army) and worked bloody damed hard in on of this countryies most unsafe workplaces for 20 yrs, and my final reward is to be thrown out in the street with the rest of the bodies! >^^<
I think I need a new plan.....
We have paid into all so-called entitlement programs, either through payroll deductions or fed/state income taxes. We paid for all these services!
And the alternative is?
GOP is running on scrap SS, scrap Medicare and Medicaid, and lower Federal income(taxes).
"the PROMISE of Social Security"--FrankS
more than a promise social security is a DEDICATED PAYROLL TAX.
unfortunately, neither you, nor congress, nor i and not even obama knows the true extent of funds siphoned from every part of the budget and "borrowed" by the massive, secretive defense industry or where that money is blown.
who you gonna vote in that might accomplish what you want? people seem to focus more on WHO we want in d.c. for the moment, but not WHAT we the people want for posterity.
we've become a nation divided into little me-me special interests groups. for profit industries are leveling mountains, fracking, dumping waste into rivers and oceans, defoliating woodlands and rain forests and frantically deep drilling for oil.
and we're all arguing about money. sad that.
Hummingbird, this is a really important point. This fiat money, represents the intangible, a concept only. It is an existentialist argument. What we are being robbed of by following Empire's distractions are the Commons, which through our existence, by virtue of being born, is an inalienable right. I do agree my slice as a USan will need to get smaller to support this sustainably. But in the meantime, we will need to wrench it back from Empire, not through their (money) terms but on ours. That means love, I don't know exactly how that will look but I think indigenous cultures the world over will be teaching it.
I llike your thinking on this, net. It seems we've reached a fork-in-the-road, in our evolution. We've out grown the nation-state concept, tending towards SOME FORM of globalism. One vision (of our opponents) is of a materialist, global EMPIRE, with us as serf-like "beasts-of-burden" in service to this EMPIRE. Not sure what the contrasting vision will ultimately be, but I think it'll be something along the lines of a LIVING Earth as sacred ground & the body of our AllMother. And we humans are sacred beings (akin to devas & angels & such) & the primary care-takers of this sacred ground, in partnership with our Allmother.
According to some things I've read (Freddy Silva's books, and Ms. Martinez's " The Time of the Quickening", amongst other things), there might be a re-visioning of the pagan concepts of reality. As a Euro-american, I can sort of "get it", through the old Norse( the last european contact with unadulterated, primary, pagan worldview) concept of the "nine worlds" of Earth (being different "frequency domains" inhabited by intelligent beings, such as we humans, here, in the world of "Mannheimr", or "Midgard/middle earth" frequency domain).
I think some reform, or restoration to "status quo ante', will, at best, just be a temporary stop-over, on the way to a more thorough-going transformation.
INB: Fascinating post. Thank you for the "frequency" factor... it's precisely the point I'm utilizing in the final chapter of a new book... I plan to submit the work on Monday, as I was given permission to add the final chapter later. It's still "coming" to me... given the fact that the work extended another 80 pages as a result of the BP spill in the Gulf, and then Fukushima. I realized at this rate, I could never complete it, as more of these types of events are inevitable. Thus the ending will signify a beginning, and frequency changes have much to do with that!
I always appreciate these "shell route collisions," or moments when someone else appears to be on my wave length and our souls' flight plans intersect.
Hi S.R. I hope your book does well. I've noticed over the decades that my apparent psychic/paranormal function in society often seems to be acting as the "hundredth monkey"(google hundredth monkey effect); so your book might indeed do well.

ONWARD ... !!!
HInd sight is 20/20. Too bad more of us senior citizens didn't smell this rat coming down the pike when Kucinich was still in the race. I've said it before, and I still believe, anyone who votes for a republican or democrat is naive, stupid or evil. Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil, so no surprise this country is in the mess it is.
downtownwalker,
Can't disagree with you here and people still continue to blame it on the Repug and will vote for the Democrats. To me the less of the two evils is the Repug and still evils regardless which yard sticks you use!
I agree. Like you, I am retired. I'm 75. I paid into social security for 46 years. Since I never made much money, I thought of social security as the one stable thing in my retirement. I do have some savings and another pension so I am not as badly off as some people. Still, the majority of my income is from social security.
What most people don't seem to understand is that social security is a separate fund. It is not part of the general budget. At this point, it is supposed to have 2.5 trillion dollars left. That is enough to fund SS through 2036. Unfortunately, most of that money is gone and replaced with IOUs. The greatest heist in history.
What frightens me more is the larger picture. Ever since FDR put his progressive ideas into law, the rightwing has been attempting to dismantle them. They are closer now than ever to succeeding. They will return this country to one of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich. They have nearly destroyed unions. Ditto for the education system and consumer and environmental regulation. The next election will, I think, be too late. They will have accomplished their goals. In an era where many countries are moving in a progressive direction, we are becoming more oppressive.
My comments always sit with an "edit" option. The only way I can get rid of the edit is to reply to it. Is this happening with other people?
If I'm understanding you correctly, then you are Situation Normal. ;)
You can edit posts here until they are directly replied to.
People are idiots.
In the oldest sense, they are idiotes -Citizens who don't fulfill their Duties.
Our education system made them that way. Not just the "school" part. No, the TV and the Internet and everything else plugged into the Consumer Society did most of the work -with a whole mess of help from natural laziness and conditional hopelessness.
Don't worry though.
The Corporatists and Imperialists won't stay on top forever. The edifice they've built is already collapsing around them -that's what's happening now.
The good news is that the structures and natural systems underneath are much, MUCH more resilient and will allow us to bounce back, better than before.
The bad news is it might take decades to work out.
If "The only thing we have to fear, is Fear itself..." then we need not be afraid, right?
"Fear is the Mind-Killer."

With something this serious, why can't Harry Reid come up with 41 senators to filibuster this? What is this some kind of messed up version of Reid imitating Ed "the Man" Miliband to make him look good? What ever happened to the guts Reid was showing earlier in this fight? What has the GOP presdient in the White House beein doing to keep the Democrats from acting like Democrats or at least real Democrats?
This is silly. Even in W's third term these senators can't stop something such as this.
Damn!
Remember that you don't need 41 Senators to filibuster, you need 41 Senators for an unbreakable filibuster because you need 60 to end one.
ONE Senator (*cough* Sanders *cough*) can begin a filibuster. It will just end when he has to yield the floor due to exhaustion or a 60 Senator vote ordering it.
We have to stand firm in our support of Bernie Sanders, the only person in the U.S. Senate who is looking after the interests of working people.
Well said, Agi. Amen to that.
REPUBLICANS ARE EVIL MOTHERFUCKERS AND DEMOCRATS ARE SPINELESS IDIOTS.
Would Democrat politicians be spineless if THEIR incomes were at stake? The problem is that they're part of the same class as the Republicans. They have the same economic interests as Republicans, just have to disguise it better to their constituencies. I don't think this is just a quibble: realizing what Democratic politicians true interests and goals are really helps when trying to figure out what the possibilities are for allies, strategies, etc.
yes, indeed! thank you, bernie.
i've wanted to know more about the so called "gang of six", but all we get from the pandering mass media is that these guys are hammering out a "compromise." i find it amazing that so few adults fail to realize how much business as usual comes from wheeling and dealing in committees who work so closely with industry lobbyists that they have no time to hear constituants. too many people confuse action for accomplishment.
It is a compromise. The republicans want to run over the seniors with the budget bus and then back over them until they're all ground into the mud. The democrats simply want to run over them. The compromise will probably just have them run down and backed over a few times.
The congress has been elected by people too dumb to realize that they are actually being paid by corporations to work for them no matter what the voters want. This corruption has been so obvious for so long for anyone willing to listen and learn outside of the corporate media and yet people that support both parties refuse to see this and act in consequence. I look at a supposedly intelligent liberal like Rachel Maddow who does absolutely nothing to help her viewers understand how thoroughly corrupt both parties are and instead only talks about republican corruption. She either is such a partisan democrat that she refuses to see it or she is not as intelligent as many people give her credit for being.
Thalidomide,
"The congress has been elected by people too dumb to realize that they are actually being paid by...."
Correction, should be "The congress has been elected by fucking retards to realize that they are actually being paid by...."
Further, are you still watching Rachel Madcow? I stopped watching MSNBC even before the 2008 Presidential Election.
Who was it that said: It's hard to make someone understand something when they are being paid not to.
I wonder if anyone has done a future body count? Surely this "gang" has done a projection on how full Boothill will be after their bombs fall. Just where are they going to stack the bodies? Other than Our Friend Bernie, I think all of them should be dipped in red paint. Maybe Ms. E. Warren should give her boss a run for his money? With the outstanding performance of mr. "o" surely there is democratic challenger? The left field is wide open for a new gunslinger/sheriff.
I suppose it's sarcasm on Bernie's part to offer "congradulations" to the gang of six or even to refer to his adesaries as "my good friends" All he needs is the southern drawl and the phrase, "I yield the floor to the distinquished Senator from Alabama." I don't think it is sarcasm though. It has too sincere a ring to it. I think it is a deferential formality which expresses the sentiment that there must be a common bond of respect and patriotism which binds these men together for a common purpose of seeking the common good of the country. I think there is even the subtext that Bernie Sanders, at one time just a small town mayor from a small state gets to sit in this august body--the Senate.
If that is so, let me offer my humble opinion about the Senate to our beloved and distinguished compatriot, a man who selfless service to America speaks so heartrendingly to us about the spirit of self sacrifice and service which is the very essence of the tradition, of the mutual bond of honor which bespeaks at every opportunity an exemplification of the very essence of an institution which has so convincingly earned the respect of all its fellow countrymen. Mr. Sanders you are up to your knees in a pile of dog shit that tarnishes you even by your willingness to be a part of it. You are in a cesspool that needs to be drained because even 256 miles from the capitol I can smell its stench. Your fellow millionaires are a festering carbuncle on the back end of the American public and I hope that someday soon it will be lanced, drained of its putrid decay, so the the American public, can heal this open sore which which is the Senate. I would respect you more if you would resign in disgust and work to a real reform, a reform in the very structure of our governance which would eliminate its most retrograde and parasitic part--the US Senate.
Tammons, Hear, hear. Huzzah.
I think he would be giving up a national platform to go global, a la Cyntha McKinney. It is pathetic that more non-USans recognize her name than USans. This would probably be the most important work he could do for people like us in his (nominal) camp. It would show the rest of the world that USans are not all SchwartzneggerSpears wannabees and that not all of us support the Faux Deaux Vichy farce that passes for governance here in Empire.
Simply one of the best rants I've read in a long time.
Thanks, tammons. I laughed. I cried.
