U.S. Agency Sabotages Haiti Earthquake Aid
A Black Agenda Radio commentary
As if it were not enough that the United States repeatedly invaded Haiti, propped up dictators, overthrew the country’s first democratically elected president in 2004, and then appointed a government of gangsters, stole Haiti’s sovereignty to make her a protectorate of her worst enemies, then invaded the country again in 2010, under the guise of earthquake relief. After so many injuries to Haiti over so many years, the United States Agency for International Development now insults the living and the dead with a report that questions how many people died in the quake, and how many remain in camps for the displaced.
The timing of the report is quite curious, since the Haitian government is desperate to receive some of the $4.6 billion in earthquake relief pledged by international donors. But apparently, there are some in the U.S. government that want to deny the Haitians that money. The USAID report claims that somewhere between 46,000 and 85,000 people died in the earthquake – probably more like 60,000 – while the Haitian government says 316,000 were killed. That’s about a five to one difference. The International Organization for Migration, which is part of the United Nations and specializes in helping displaced persons, says 1.5 million people were forced into camps by the catastrophe. But the American agency claims less than 900,000 moved into camps. Only a few months ago, in March, the International Organization for Migration went from tent to tent, counting 680,000 people still in the camps. But the USAID report claims only 100,000 Haitians remain in camps. That’s a discrepancy of seven to one. Somebody is just too wrong to simply be mistaken. The question is who, and why.
Whoever wanted to question the disaster figures compiled by the Haitian government, the United Nations, and even the Red Cross, picked the right man for the job. Timothy Schwartz is an anthropologist who is vehemently opposed to foreign aid – because, he says, such aid is really designed to promote U.S. business interests. What’s important here is not whether Timothy Schwartz has a point about foreign aid – many on the Left would agree him, in general – but why the Agency for International Development, one of the United States’ principle foreign aid dispensers, would hire an opponent of foreign aid to write its report on Haiti. The answer is obvious, given Schwartz's well known views; he wrote a book that denounced aid to Haiti in particular. The USAID, or whoever pulls their strings, could bet on Schwartz submitting a dramatic underestimate of earthquake damage in Haiti. Schwartz would think he was doing Haiti a favor.
The Haitian government is soon supposed to take over administration of the national reconstruction program. By throwing doubt on the actual extent of earthquake damage, the report calls into question both Haiti's financial needs and the trustworthiness of its government. Mr. Schwartz's report is all some people need to hear, to convince themselves that Haitians are trying to scam the international donor community. White Americans, especially, are more than willing to believe such racist slander, and withhold their money from Haitian government control. Which, ironically, would leave most reconstruction decisions in the hands of private U.S. and other foreign business interests and their local elite partners – precisely the end result Mr. Schwartz claims to oppose.

Show AllThanks, Glen. Very sad, criminal, what's been done to Haiti.
The USG has been sabotaging Haiti since its independence. As a Senator exclaimed in 1803 about Haiti "n....rs speaking French!" More recently why is the USG so frightened by Aristide a 120lb, 5'5" priest. The USG is so terrified of Aristide, duly elected President of Haiti twice and overthrown by the USG twice and exiled from the western Hemisphere forever originally. He eventually returned to Haiti over the protests of the USG. Aristide has more dignity, bravery than all the USAn' politicians combined. Why are the Bush's so terrified of him. Bush2, we all know he's a born coward but both Bush's have a completely irrational psychotic fear of Aristide.
In another article I commented on a researchers claim that Millions in the United States of America simply "vanished" during the great depression and his charges they likely died due to hunger. This was ridiculed by some who claimed that number of people could simply not vanish with mass graves or obituaries or first hand accounts.
Here is an example of how a simple press release can claim 260,000 people never existed. Or how one group can "count" 680,000 in tents and another can tally "100,00".
A discrepancy of some 580,000 peoples in a country 10 million in the "Count of people in tents" and one of 260,000 in a count of "the dead".
The USAID is a front for the USG spies. It's no secret. NSA fits into this scheme
The history of Whitewater, money laundering, making money by (apparently) losing money, outright embezzlement, using 'lieutenants' who self-silence and are later pardoned by their partners who have advanced in the power structure - is a variation on the theme.
Playing long term against short term interests is an insidiously subtle racist /colonialist methodology. It is the 'with all deliberate speed' argument countered only by the candor of the likes of Malcolm X: to paraphrase - you don't stick a knife in someone's back, pull it half way out and say you're making progress.
For a disaster of this scale to be met by latifundio (large landholders) intransigence is a blatant statement of the depravity being encouraged by Clinton oversight (double entendre intended) and the transnationals drooling over the tragic opportunities.
In the US the government can take your land for something as basic as a highway (eminent domain) but when tens or even hundreds of thousands are in desperation - it becomes an economic planning matter.
Does anyone down there want me to believe in the integrity of the capitalist system? this does not convince me.

We can't count accurately how many died in Iraq. Israel never knows how many they killed , but they were always armed and dangerous, and we'll never have any real figures on Katrina or the Gulf BP oil diaster. Why should this be any different. The only thing that counts is how the moneyed elite can make a profit off of it. With the Clinton's in charge how could we expect anything but this sort of outcome.
I am sure we'll never know how many civilians we've killed in Pakistan, Yemen and Libya. Gaddafi is the only important casualty to the banking world and they are the people that matter. That's why they were bailed out and the rest of us face austerity.
I feel for Haiti, if those people know what's good for them they'll run everyone off the island. I'd love to do that with the multinationals that have sucked my country dry and now they are working on Ireland, Greece and Portugal. Let them become citizens of China.
Pretty telling that this administration seems to be no longer interested in Japan's plight, even when their waste may affect our west coast and Hawaii in the near future and the world in the long run. No one has come up with a way to game the Japanese situation to a fortune. So nothing of interest there anymore.
African countries should be very wary. Hedgefund investment in landgrabbing there, and our military efforts to oust Gaddafi, the one that was going to start a unified
African bank. Can't have that he might undermine multinational investment interests, to hell with the people of Africa.

When Slick Willie Clinton and his daughter Chelsea,
arrived in Haiti, the people should have chased them out of the country. Willie should be exposed for what he is.
