With Osama bin Laden Dead, It's Time to End the War on Terror
In a dramatic, yet sober, Sunday night address to the American people, President Obama announced the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden. He reminded us of the horror, the grief, the tragedy and senseless slaughter of September 11, 2001. He reminded us of how, in those grim days, “we reaffirmed our unity as one American family...and our resolve to bring those who committed this vicious attack to justice."
The President spoke of how the capture and killing of bin Laden was the “most significant effort to date in our efforts to defeat Al-Qaeda. “ And he reaffirmed that this country will never wage a war against Islam. For that reason, Obama said, bin Laden’s “demise should be welcomed by all those who welcome peace and human dignity.”
His call to Americans to remember what unifies us, to remember that “justice has been done,” is a defining opening to seize. It is time to end the “global war on terror” we have lived with for this last decade. It is time to stop defining the post 9/11 struggle against stateless terrorists a “war.” And it is time to bring an end to the senseless war in Afghanistan that has cost this nation so much in lives and money.
Framing the fight against terror as a war was a conscious decision made by Bush and Karl Rove and others in those first days after 9/11—a decision which destroyed the unity President Obama spoke of tonight.
Rove understood that if the indefinite struggle against terror was generally framed as a “war,” it would become the master narrative of American politics-bringing with it the collateral damage we have witnessed in these last ten years.
The “war” metaphor—as retired American Ambassador Ronald Spiers wrote in a provocative piece in March 2004 in Vermont’s Rutland Herald, “is neither accurate nor innocuous, implying as it does that there is an end point of either victory or defeat.... A ‘war on terrorism’ is a war without an end in sight, without an exit strategy, with enemies specified not by their aims but by their tactics.... The President has found this ‘war’ useful as an all-purpose justification for almost anything he wants or doesn’t want to do; fuzziness serves the administration politically. It brings to mind Big Brother’s vague and never-ending war in Orwell’s 1984. A war on terrorism is a permanent engagement against an always-available tool.”
The Bush Administration and, sadly, too often the Obama Administration, used the “war” as justification for undermining the best of America’s principles. We have witnessed the abuse of international human rights standards, the unlawful detention of thousands of women and men, and the condoning of torture.
I remember watching the celebration of Washington’s WWII memorial just two years after 9/11, and how I was reminded of how, during the despair of World War II, a greater threat to the existence of our country than what we face today, President Roosevelt gave America a vision of hope—not fear. Just a decade earlier, during the Great Depression, another grave threat to the country’s spirit and unity, Roosevelt told a fearful nation that we had nothing to fear but fear itself. In President Bush and his team we saw people working overtime to convince the American people—through a barrage of historically inaccurate analogies—that there is nothing to fear but the end of fear itself. Today, President Obama and his team have a chance to reset our fight against terrorism.
Yes, we all live in the shadow of September 11—a crime of monumental magnitude. But terrorism is not an enemy that threatens the existence of our nation; our response should not undermine the very values that define America for ourselves and the rest of the world.
The Bush Administration shamelessly exploited America’s fear of terrorism for political purposes. But as we have learned, a hyper-militarized war without end will do more to weaken our democracy, and foster a new national security state, than seriously address the threats ahead. After all, what we are engaged in is not primarily a military operation. It’s an intelligence-gathering operation, a law-enforcement, public-diplomacy effort.
President Obama spoke in humane and sober terms tonight. It was a relief to hear in his words reminders of those (too brief) post -9/11 days when the idea of shared sacrifice, respect for the work of public servants, firefighters, first responders, and a sense of a larger common good pervaded our society and politics. Yet after the capture and killing of bin Laden, will political leaders have the courage to say that what we face is not a “war” on terrorism?
President Obama has tragically continued too many of the Bush era’s national security policies. Yet he is also a President who understands how wars threaten to undo reform Presidencies and also undermine the best values of this country. If we as citizens challenge the “war” framing, if we refuse, a decade after the savagery of 9/11’s attacks, to allow “war” framing to define the national psyche and our politics, if we demand our representatives stop couching virtually all foreign policy discussion in terms of terrorism, we have a chance to build a new and more effective security template.
As Shirin Ebadi, a champion of women and children’s rights, the first Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and someone who has stood up to the fundamentalists in her native land of Iran, said almost a decade ago: “Governments don’t just repress people with false interpretations of religion; sometimes they do it with false cant about national security.”

Show AllKudos to you Katrina. My favorite line: But terrorism is not an enemy that threatens the existence of our nation; our response should not undermine the very values that define America for ourselves and the rest of the world.
Bring the troops home. And get Blackwater out of the war for profit business. We need to rebuild our own country internally (values) and externally (infrastructure). .
Now is indeed the time to to withdraw from "the war" on "terror." Withdraw from a militaristic ideology spun around a nonsense phrase like "war on terror." Terror. Terror. Terror. I'm terrified. I'm terrorized. Let's declare war on it. Terror, that is. Sounds silly, doesn't it? Makes you wonder which marketing genius in The Pentagon came up with the phrase, doesn't it?
Let's instead withdraw from the wars, concentrate on solving our own problems, and put everything we've got into making peace. People are weary of war and the glorification of the military class. They're tired of belligerence and fighting. We've got work to do: we have to remove the hornet's nest in Washington, a job that involves a different kind of fight: a fight that demands we rediscover what patriotism really means, and a fight that calls us to find inner courage that we don't yet know we possess.
If it allows the yanks to declare victory and get out, it'll be a propitious time. Of course that's a good idea, so it won't happen.
Nice try, but that dog won't hunt.
And while the irritant festers - the occupation and war upon foreign nations - we will be attacked here again, and we can further perpetuate the attack and reprisal cycle.
It seems quite reasonable to me that the operation and all that went into it did not require the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq and the destruction, dislocation, and death that we have wrought. All that was required and apparently accomplished was good intelligence and a workable plan. That is, if you can call assasination of the movement's spiritual leader, and not someone running current operations "intelligent."
What we did teach those that now turn their anger on us is that a great empire can be toppled through its own hubris and overreach.
Well put, Joanne. All we need NOW is to sing in chorus & repeat it, million of us, again & again , till the KILLING MACHINE STOPS. What we saw the last thirty years is a big killer creating small ones, when it no longer needs them it dispose of them.
bin laden was used to change our laws, legislations, union support & sense of belonging, to control further, our media & means of communications, put more cameras, recruits more uniforms, PRIVATIZE PUBLIC ASSETS AND CEASE THE RESOURCE OF OTHER NATIONS, MOVE THE CHESS GAME CLOSER TO CHINA & RUSSIA, THE LIST IS HUGE.
A KILLER CREATING AN OTHER KILLER.
There is no way in the world they would allow him to TELL HIS STORY, that would mean telling the story of the bush family, dick and the others, nsa , cia, dod CORPORATIONS.
THE SETUP CLEARLY SHOWS THAT THEY COULD HAVE TAKEN HIM ALIVE. HE WAS A """""hub"""""" THE US, SAUDI ARABIA & THE OTHERS. IMPERIALISM NO LONGER NEEDED. assuming thats where he was.
The whole entity is a psychopathic lying machine.
We are told, "He used his wife as human shield", NIXON AND KESSINGER TOOK MILLION of VIETNAMES & COMBODIAN HOSTAGES and slaughtered them with no mercy, NIXON ASKED KESSINGER ABOUT THE POSSILITY TO NUKE THE WHOLE """SHITY PLACE""" HIS WORDS, WHAT ABOUT YOUR REPUTATION MISTER PRESIDENT, REPLIED KESSINGER.
The Australian prime minister john howard cowardly accused refugees of throwing their children overboard, in order to attract attention, of course it was proven wrong. HIM SELF DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE OF THE MILLION IRAQI KILLED, MILLIONS EXILED AND THOSE VERY SAME REFUGEES.
IMPERIALISM & it's HORROR, ARE OUR MALADIES the cure is dismantling the lying killing machinery, nothing short of that, will do.
Creating ACCOUNTABLE, WOMAN & MAN WITH INTEGRITY & HUMANITY in a world VOID of it. NOT DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY.
No Terror no Torture Just Truth.
People really ought to read Chris Hedges, speaking off the top of his head, about Osama bin Laden's death. He says:
"So I was in the Middle East in the days after 9/11. And we had garnered the empathy of not only most of the world, but the Muslim world who were appalled at what had been done in the name of their religion. And we had major religious figures like Sheikh Tantawy, the head of al-Azhar – who died recently – who after the attacks of 9/11 not only denounced them as a crime against humanity, which they were, but denounced Osama bin Laden as a fraud … someone who had no right to issue fatwas or religious edicts, no religious legitimacy, no religious training. And the tragedy was that if we had the courage to be vulnerable, if we had built on that empathy, we would be far safer and more secure today than we are."

This is a perfect opportunity to declare victory and bring an end to this fruitless and corrupt war.
what gets me is the whole dance of the illiterate sheeple
fake news - pushed forward by the fake media to the public no one cares about
now that is machiavellian
Yes, it is Machiavellian, especially considering the goal is to concentrate power and wealth by any means necessary. We shouldn't be celebrating anything. What's to celebrate? We should each and every jubilant person how this has changed their lives for the better.
Katrina here is just buying into the official line. Thus, though she may sincerely want these wars to end, by lending credulity to these obvious lies, she is actually buttressing the medacity used to "justify" these wars.
In this blithe fashion, then, a few major issues are buried:
"Justice has been done," the lady quotes Obama as saying. Justice? What gives any person or nation the right to take another's life by decree? What about due process? Does Katrina not know that the FBI has admitted that they didn't have the evidence to warrant a "Wanted" poster for Osama for 9/11? Even if this story were true (and I don't believe for a second that it is), the act of murder would be an outrage to decency and humanity.
Why does Katrina pretend that the "humane, sober" Obama is better than Bush? Can she cite any specific policies to prove this? HUMANE?!! What about the drones, Katrina? What about Gaddafi's son and three grandchildren? What about GAZA? Where was Obama's "humanity" then?
Does she not realize that this is a tremendously cynical propaganda coup that covers very many bases at once? In a single stroke, the outrage of the abovementioned murder of Gaddafi's family members, and of the policy of "targeted assassination" (just one of many appalling tactics we've inherited from the murderous Israelis), is swept under the rug by the sheer media overkill blitz; and, moreover, the morally unjustifiable act is also putatively "justified" by the subtle association between the "killing" of Osama and the outrageously criminal attempt to kill the sovereign head of state Gaddafi. The intended conclusion we are supposed to draw is that we only execute these extrajudicial killings against really, really "bad guys" whom we know to be "bad guys" but have no time to present proof thereof "because we're in a war."
It's an insidious, circular false logic that just won't quit until people of common sense and decency unite to overthrow the monstrous system that has spawned all these horrors. The upshot of the Osama media blitz will be the exact opposite of what Katrina wishes for in this editorial. The GWOT will be turned up a notch, and we'll probably see a new terrorist attack or two in Europe or the US.
Note, lastly, how Katrina ends her piece with an allusion to that bad, bad, bad regime in Iran. The woman is a stooge and, incidentally, has more money than she knows what to do with. I hope she has a nice summer in the Hamptons this year. I doubt there will be any terrorist attacks there.
Katrina's article is a disgrace and an insult to our intelligence.
CLOVIS: I totally agree. Any writer knows the importance of adjectives they use to describe their "main" character. She lavishes descriptions of praise on a figure who has done NOTHING to earn them. To seem moderate and fair-minded, she'll admit that Obama has not quite "measured up" to ideal standards of justice, but she never tells the truth about the degree of sell-out that he, and both parties today facilitate (if not enjoy).
It's a shame. In these compromised times, only THE compromised can still make a good ($) living. Katrina belongs in that club. She probably sleeps better at night reminding herself that her commentary is MUCH better than that promoted by the clowns at "Fox."
Excellent comment. I was going to use the word naive when I read this article last night. Shortly after 9-11 I watched a biography of Bin Laden on PBS. I don't think I got to watch the whole thing, but whys and wherefores tend to stick in my brain -- I just don't forget them. And while I had no sympathy for Bin Laden, or what he and his ilk perpetrate, I understood the why of it.
The death of Bin Laden changes nothing -- such a small cog in the machinery. Bush was right six months after 9-11 -- Bin Laden was no longer relevant. His execution -- if it was indeed Bin Laden who was still alive -- was just part of the show. From comments on places like HuffPo today people are ready to re-elect Obama today -- in fact, let's safe that cool billion and declare Obama the new Emperor of the United States. Targeted assassinations, declaring people guilty of breaking the law before they've even been charged, arresting anyone who would protest against the wars -- yes, let's give kudos to Obama -- he got the Big Bad Wolf and now we can end the wars. That's not the plan, Katrina, so stop being stupid and naive.
"The Bush Administration and, sadly, too often the Obama Administration, used the “war” as justification for undermining the best of America’s principles. "
What Obama does is simply "sad", what Bush did was what then?
If one really wishes to discuss terrorism then one must ,perforce, discuss the worlds greatest terrorist organisation, the USA.
You loyalty to Democrats is missplaced, Ms. vanden Heuvel and such as this:
"Yes, we all live in the shadow of September 11—a crime of monumental magnitude" begs the question as to whether crimes are the responsibility of the police or of the military?
"The Bush Administration shamelessly exploited America’s fear of terrorism for political purposes." and "President Obama spoke in humane and sober terms tonight. It was a relief to hear in his words "
So, Bush exploited but Obama, who widened the scope of the "war", promised and lied about ending torture and false imprisonment speaks "humanely". I believe you are sincere, just as I believe you are blind to the truth
As "leftown" noted above, after 9/11 the world was sympathetic to our losses. There was, I would remind, a candlelight procession in support of the US in, among other places, Tehran, Iran. You buy into the fraud, hopefully fewer do so each passing day.
If Osama's strategy was to make us abandon our principles of civil rights and protection of personal liberty, he has succeeded. If his desire was to make us bankrupt ourselves in an unending "war on terror" , he has succeeded. If his desire was to make us more widely hated and seen as cruel, vengeful, and oppressive he has succeeded. Live by the sword, die by the sword. This is as true for Osama as it now is for us.
Oh, Katrina, how you defend your Obama...........But then , you have always been an Obamabot. I just love my coffee and tea tepid and watery, just like your writing and insipid, pseudo leftist politics.
...
Preposterous! So, they have known where OBL has been since August of 2010? Oh my, that's a long time to stage a "fire fight" and how convenient, that although he was "shot in the head," he was still "recognizable" by the CIA or whoever got to see the head before tossing the body into the ocean!
Let's step back and ask a simple question: If they knew where OBL was for almost a year, was his assassination and instant 'burial at sea' the objective? If so, why did they wait a year to do this? Makes no sense. They could have besieged the "compound" on September 11, 2010 and enjoyed the spectacular "victory" on that most auspicious day.
Never mind the fact that their job should have been to capture (!) OBL and, dare I say, PROVE in some sort of "court of law" that he was actually GUILTY of something. Now that would have been interesting! Oh wait, that's not necessary any more, I forgot... It's totally cool now to accuse someone of a crime and kill them.
Instead of capturing OBL on Sept. 11, 2010, they wait until May Day 2011 to launch this massive PR sham. Nothing about the story can be proven, of course, and it is all "top secret" even though it is over, of course. They do not need to prove the body they tossed in the ocean was OBL! Indeed, they promise to come up with some DNA later to "prove" they got their man. In the meantime, please, just TAKE THEIR WORD! You trust the US government, don't you? They would never lie, would they?
Unlike the liberals calling for 'retreat,' of course, this will be a reason for the US War Machine to ramp up the wars a notch or two. The leftists who believe this implausible story, calling on Obama to quit his wars, have been duped again!
Pathetic. Another cutting-edge piece by Katrina "The Dunce" vanden Heuvel!
That should be posted on every thread that has to deal with this topic today.
Hmmm....Well, he came out with his long form birth certificate just the other day. And.....now this. Campaign 2012 is well under way! Also, it is letting Gaddafi know....And anyone else on the hit list that we may or may not know about.....And now there is more reason to 'fear them' , fore they shall seeketh revenge..and on and on. Actually, Saturnalia, to be honest, i am not certain what you are saying here. You are usually incisive and witty, and i think i am not 'getting it'. ;-)
I was quoting the above poster; Stiv. I thought his question bore repeating. I still do.
excellent post, stiv!
I think you are exactly right on the mark. This is a pretext for more crackdowns in the area of civil liberties and more war. Obama likes war and Obama doesn't like his decisions questioned. I wonder, too, if Obama's internal poll numbers weren't looking pretty dismal.
Oh, I so hope that some people in power will blow the whistle on any kind of false flag operation this administration might be planning. There must be s few powerful people that won't let the administration pull a 9/11....wouldn't you think so?
David Ray Griffin writes in his book Osama Bin Laden: Dead or Alive? of how former C.I.A. agent Robert Baer took a poll of C.I.A. officers assigned to track bin Laden in late 2008 and discovered that not a single one believed that bin Laden was still alive. Baer also expressed this opinion in October of that year on NPR when he stated that:
"He hasn't shown up. I've taken in the last month a poll of CIA officers who have been on his trail, and what astounded me was not a single one was sure he was alive or dead. In other words, they have no idea. I mean, this man disappeared off the side of the earth. That has never happened before in my years in the CIA."
Later in the interview Baer told interviewer Terry Gross: "Of course he's dead."
Given this information one has to wonder why this has received almost no coverage by the mainstream media as well as the report in Griffin's book that a "prominent official in the Afghan Taleban movement ... [had] stated to Pakistan's newspaper Observer that he himself attended the funeral of bin Laden and saw his face prior to burial in Tora Bora 10 days ago [which would have been on Dec. 15, 2001]."
Perhaps this announcement of bin Laden's alleged death is what may give Obama's presidential run in 2012 a leg up on the Republicans as it will show the American populace that Obama was able to do what Bush could not do and that was to supposedly bring to justice the alleged mastermind of 9/11/01 despite the fact that the U.S. has not allowed the corporate media to view and photograph bin Laden's body. Democracy Now! reported today that bin Laden was supposedly "buried at sea." That explanation is certainly convenient. And undoubtedly the majority of Americans will take at face value what the Obama administration has told them about the alleged death of Osama bin Laden.
http://www.npr.org/2011/05/03/135941291/obama-basks-in-moment-of-national-unity
NPR has cranked up the propaganda machine big time.
Yes, a rather regrettable article, and nothing but flag waving to be certain. I hope the giddiness will pass and more sober reflection, a usual hallmark of NPR reportage, will return.
Of course it makes it difference as doubts about bin Laden's supposed death clearly establish that the raison d'etre for invading and occupying Afghanistan was clearly based upon a lie. What makes a difference is that the American corporate media refused to investigate if bin Laden had actually died in 2001. Instead it decided to simply swallow the Bush and the Obama administration's claim hook, line, and sinker that the U.S. was in Afghanistan in order to supposedly hunt down the person who was allegedly behind the attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001.
More Obamabot spin from Van den Drivel...
In any case, Bin Laden is now a martyr. He will now be an inspiration to a new generation of insurgents.
Article misses a key component of what 'creates' terrorists. No mention is made of the fact that corporate control of Middle Eastern oil is the primary source of anger for people living there. With Exxon, Shell, Mobile and other predatory corporations setting up camp there, Coke, McDonald's, Viagra, iphones, GM foods, evangelicalism and U.S. military bases are never far behind. Just like here, these products are shoved down their throats as the material messages (money buys happiness) of corporate America tries to replace their traditional values with a culture of consumerism and celebrity worship.
It's ugly, but so far the average American has shown little propensity or desire to rein in the sociopathic behavior of Wall Street. Instead we're all drinking the collective corporate Kool-Aid as we flock to our TV sets for more entertainment, stuffing our faces with fast food, guzzling more beer and chanting "U.S.A., U.S.A.!" Is it any mystery why this life style is not admired the world over?

A nice thought Katrina and I agree, but this thought can be filed under 'Wishful Thinking'.
Obama did say in last nights speech that the job was far from over. A hint towards not expecting anything to change.
When you say collateral damage we witnessed surely you are speaking to the choir, those at the Nation and here on CD. The vast majority of Amerikans have seen no such thing. They do not know or care about the devastation wrought by our death machines. Tens to hundreds of thousands dead, many more lives ruined, family members gone or maimed, homes and villages destroyed. Not to forget over 4,000 soldiers, uncounted mercenaries and over 20k maimed on our side.
Those cheering and tipping back beers sicken me. bin Laden may have played a part in the 9-11 tragedy but the death and mayhem played out in response has been 100 fold.
We should all be ashamed!
I believe the correct words are vigilante justice.
Hey, KVH, what if all of you columnists and investigative reporters hadn't been such freaking cowards about 9/11 and raised questions during and immediately after the attacks?
Gee, maybe we wouldn't have even HAD a decade-long war on terra, huh?
Any of you cowards ever think about that?
That maybe if you all hadn't fallen over yourselves to exhibit your "patriotic" fervor, we could have uncovered the real causes and motivations behind the worst false flag attack in our country's history.
Nope, just keep reading from the script our propaganda ministers wrote for you.
Vague. Connect the dots for the reader and explain your generalities. If you have to break it up in two or three different articles, do so, because right now it is a fragmented piece of writing. Have a good day!
Katrina: Are you are really that naive? Time to end the war on terror? The so called war on terror was never about Osama. He was just used as a lackey and a boogyman to brainwash the American political dum dums who are now celebrating in the streets. Osama was just a Government, conspiracy patsy for 911. Obama's quote that " justice was done" is total BS. Justice for the three thousand Americans that died on 911 will not be served until the real culprits are caught!
She's not that naive.
She's that well paid.
Indeed. :)
True! My naive comment was meant as satire.
"Yet he is also a President who understands how wars threaten to undo reform Presidencies and also undermine the best values of this country."

I heard the news late last night, and expected CommonDreams to be wall-to-wall Osama today.
I also expected a gush of inane, tendentious claptrap, and this article is a representative example.
Incredibly, vanden Heuvel actually stumbles close to the truth in the passages beginning with, "Rove understood that if the indefinite struggle against terror was generally framed as a 'war,' it would become the master narrative of American politics-bringing with it the collateral damage we have witnessed in these last ten years."
That is exactly what the Permanent Global War on an Abstract Noun does. It is also the anchor, the basic plot-line, that creates stock characters like the Evil Super-Villain, the Dark Lord, with an ever-expanding international network of shadowy Minions. These characters are essential to promote uncritical acceptance and justification for a burgeoning imperial military and state-security apparatus.
This perpetual pseudo-war footing, in turn, is a bonanza for capitalism; it's a rabid, steroid-fed goose that lays golden eggs for corporations. How many Nick Turse articles alone have been published on CD that describe the expanding, deepening, multifarious ways that corporations market to, and partner with, the Amerikan military?
If by "the best values of this country", vanden Heuvel is referring to traditional Enlightenment values like freedom, civil liberty, peace, the common welfare, egalitarianism, human rights, and so forth, she's correct to state that these are all inimical to the predatory imperatives of capitalist authoritarianism and imperialism.
But, contrary to her fond, wishful assessment, it couldn't be more clear and bleeding obvious that Obama has enthusiastically embraced and seeks to further entrench and perpetuate the ominous "master narrative" she rightly deplores. And the bipartisan political elite are on board, True Believers who also faithfully serve this narrative.
Oh, there are a few who take exception. And given the natural tug-of-war dynamic embedded in Amerika's dupolistic political system, there may even be genuine political conflicts over who are the best politicians to serve and enlarge the normalized Terror State while paying lip service to those "best values"-- and get away with it.
Only a fool, dupe, or jingo-sotted idiot doesn't get this.
This is the kind of credulous drivel being dished out by the bucketful all over the mass media, corporate and alternative alike. It's as if the commentariat reacted to this dubious and problematic news by swallowing a triple-dose of extra-strength Stupid Pills.
It's gonna be a long week.
Superb post, OS. I think it's gonna be a long rest of our lives.
how strange to be unable to see what is right before one's eyes...how strange to see, yet lie...
bare-fisted, trigger-fingered, murderous thugs armed with modern technology run the various 'countries' of this planet under the guise of 'government'...
in the process, the living world is being systematically poisoned to the point of failure...
yet, we would cling to religion and authority, willingly abandoning our own thoughts for those driven into us, first by violence, then by repetition...
when does the man stand, remove his clothing, and refuse to be less than he is?
when does he deliver his own justice, and return to the business of his own survival, his own joy?
when he begins to question, claims inherent right, and refuses excuse...
when he stops abandoning his own thoughts for those of, for example, this author...
or the many, many others in her pathetic camp...
some quite distinguished...and just as pathetic...
"End the War on Terror"?
The very nature of America's empiric foreign policy will assure this party is just getting started. Washington lives to kill and take other people's shit. That's their mission in life.
There were thousands of little Osama spiders clinging to his back. Most of them eluded Operation Squash. Unfortunately – American children of today will probably live to meet many of them in the future.
Katrina, we need organizers for a Billion People's Peace March on Washington DC. Can you help?
Um, why are you asking one of the trustees for permission? Have you been that well trained? How many times -did- they take you to Room 101?
At this point, what matters but peace?
Do you prefer the peace of a quiet meadow, or the peace of knowing your place with a jackboot on the back of your neck?
There is a subtle difference, you know.
'Peace at any price' means you are willing to make compromises. And as soon as that happens, they know you can be bought.
But for now, the nice TSA man wants to fondle you. Turn your head and cough.
Oh this clap trap, Katrina, is so you! Thom Hartmann is swooning on his show today. He and his wife were invited to the correspondents dinner and I bet KVD was there, too.
