Why Wall Street Is Winning
A Hated Financial Center Is Bouncing Back. How Did They Do It?
Two years ago as financial reform was put on the U.S. Congressional agenda, a skeptical Senator, Dick Durbin of Illinois, spoke of the power of the banks over the country’s legislative process.
“They run the place,” he said matter of factly.
The comment was then treated as a sidebar in the few newspapers that carried it, perhaps because it hinted at how interests, not ideology, dictate what happens on Capital Hill.
The remark about a shadowy power structure far more important than all the partisan in-fighting that dominates the news is worth recalling as a way of explaining how little has been done to rain in Wall Street in the years since its crash virtually wrecked the global economy.
It is also worth realizing that the people who “run the place” usually do so in ways that rarely get high profile media scrutiny or even public attention.
During the deliberations on re-regulating banks, they mounted a formidable army of lobbyists. It was reported that there was a many as 25 industry lobbyists were assigned to each member of Congress.
Even as new laws passed to satisfy an angry public, the industry dominated the process of what the laws would cover and how.
They also spread money around to helped politicians that helped them. For years, those donations were made on a non-partisan base with Democrats as well as Republicans a beneficiary of carefully targeted help. Today, they are cutting off the Democrats who pushed financial reform.
The corporate sector is following suit. Nominally “liberal” companies like BP, criticized by the White House sharply for the Gulf Oil spill, is pouring money, not oil, into GOP coffers.
As bi-partisanship fades, and certain ideological lines are drawn more sharply, the bankers are now favoring the Republicans financially, perhaps to thank them for erecting a unified wall against tighter rules for banks.
The GOP, led by the pro-free market slogans of the Tea Party are busy, defunding regulators as well.
Right-wingers in turn are being funded by wealthy billionaire backers including the shadowy Koch Brothers responsible for backing the anti union programs of Governors like Scott Walker in Wisconsin. These campaigns are designed to neuter all opposition to a conservative agenda.
Meanwhile, President Obama reaches into the corporate sector for “help” on his economic “recovery” agenda. In recent months, he named Jeffrey R. Immelt, President of General Electric, a company known for outsourcing jobs as his jobs advisor.
He plucked William Daley from the American Chamber of Commerce to become his Chief of Staff.
Daley recently scolded politicians for calling for the prosecution of Wall Street criminals. He said that job belongs to producers in Hollywood, not lawmakers.
These efforts have emboldened other arms of Wall Street to intervene in politics. The most visible last week was the statement by the ratings agency Standard and Poors that it was revising the country’s credit rating as “negative,” warning that will consider lowering the long term rating of the United States “within two years.”
Many stocks fell, but bond markets ignored it. Former International Monetary Fund economist Simon Johnson raised questions about their decision of a kind absent in most media outlets.
Writing on his website Baseline Scenario, he noted that few outlets pointed out how inaccurate the ratings agencies had been at the height of the crisis, and how irresponsibly they hyped worthless bonds packed with sub prime junk. Yet once again they were treated as credible despite sloppy analysis.
“The main problem is that S&P did not lay out even the most basic numbers or even point readers towards the nonpartisan and definitive Congressional Budget Office analysis of medium- and longer-term budget issues. This matters, because the CBO numbers definitely do not show debt exploding upwards immediately from today…”
Bloggers like Cannonfire go further arguing that “The revised credit rating is meant to push the administration and lawmakers into going after Social Security and Medicare. The right-wing now has an additional propaganda tool to push for draconian cuts in areas that will most hurt working and middle class Americans.
Here's the kicker: Standard and Poors and Moody's are private firms. They don't work for the United States; they serve the interest of Wall Street banks. 2008 taught us that they are completely unaccountable.”
Doug Smith adds on the influential Naked Capitalism blog that Wall Street should know that joining the Tea Party Jihad on government spending will be counterproductive for economic recovery.
“We know the banksters control both parties and are immune from any threats to their bonuses or their liberty. Still, even on the banksters’ own terms of extend-and-pretend, these cuts are idiotic”
Despite all of its frauds and deceptions, Wall Street has bought its way out of the many pressures that it change its ways. In a special issue. New York Magazine concludes that in this economic war, “Wall Street Won.”
Their editors write, “In the political realm, Wall Street faced the prospect of root-and-branch re-regulation, up to and including the potential nationalization of the industry’s largest players, and in the cultural realm its transfiguration into a kind of pariah state. Once upon a time, the Street’s leading lights had been glamorized and admired to the point of worship; now the likes of Robert Rubin, Lloyd Blankfein, and Richard Fuld were relentlessly pilloried and demonized….
Yet today on Wall Street, all of that seems a very long time ago. Not only are the banks rolling in dough again, but their denizens’ customs and sense of self-esteem have largely reverted to the status quo ante.”
A retired, well-known journalist, James Clay Miller, notes that media coverage of these issues adds to the confusion because it is often superficial and misleading.
“Corporate media refuse to tell many of the stories of bank fraud, as they decline to tell many of the stories that would show the public the corporate takeover of government, but the facts are available to those who recognize that they won't learn much of importance from CNN.”
The public is not just uninformed; it is unorganized on these issues and not fighting back. The power of the bank lobby can be compared to the pro-Israel lobby in the sense it dominates the discourse on this issue.
With a besieged Democratic administration siding with the banks, unions and activists may not be willing or able to challenge Wall Street. They are so desperate to hold on to the White House, they seem willing to pull any potential punches to make Wall Street a target.
Only a national high profile and populist campaign will be able to stop the financial industry from consolidating its clout. The banks are banking on their ability to stop such a campaign before it starts or gains any traction.

Show AllMr. Schecter,
I too have pointed out the significance of Dick Durbin's statement, and how it often has been treated as a sidebar statement, when it really is much bigger. Nonetheless, I really enjoy reading your articles.
Just a minor editorial comment. I think you meant to say "reign in" instead of "rain in."
Actually it's "rein in." It's an equestrian metaphor.
corvo,
You are right. I am guilty of the same error as Mr. Schacter.
Gracchus: I caught this, too. There were at least FIVE serious grammatical errors in this piece.
"There was a many..."
"A helped politicians"
"Worry that will consider"
He must have penned this one when Mercury was still retrograde. An editor (or editing process) was needed on this one, although the points raised are largely significant, and well-taken.
Sigh. Not to get you going on a rant, Siouxrose but, damn, the superstitious astrology junk just gets me sometimes. Perhaps he's just simply not aware of the rules of grammar. He wouldn't be the first nor the last. I do agree that he's raised some good points, however. Before you go there with your defense of your chosen superstition, I'll just say it for ya. I'm a ignorant, insensitive, parochial, patriarchial, materialist wretch.
:-)
Black (who posts under other names to posit the same redundant attacks on my perspective)...
You use words like:
Junk
rant
superstition
And expect me to engage you with civility? Please. Go back under the rock you emerged from. WHEN you have put as much time and study into the subjects I have, then there would be a valid basis for a genuine debate.
Very few channels allow an astrologer to speak. The atmosphere in Amerika is approaching that of The Dark Ages. It is not astrology that is the "superstition" to be feared. It's quite fascinating how the Church-State has put so many to death for embracing spiritual views that countered its authoritarian ethos... but the astrologer is the one to be damned? Pulease...
I only post here under Black_Anarch and have for the last 2+ years, according to CD so, please refrain from accusing me of that. It's not your first time doing that and is usually your first salvo in a barrage of ad hominem attacks. I neither expect nor require your civility, as I suspect that you choose to act with civility mostly toward those who share your 'beliefs'. I'd be more than willing, on any forum you choose, to debate your chosen superstition. That being said, I have no problem with most of what you say. You're pretty smart, if not a bit strange with your espousal of astrology as some kind of actual cause/instigator of human behavior, and you're quite funny to read.
BTW, for a bit of clarity, I am an atheist. I agree one hundred percent with your assertion about the church and it's totalitarian behavior. I never said that astrologers should be damned. I simply believe that there is a serious lack of proof, from either theists or astrologers or any other superstitious 'belief' as to the reality of their beliefs. Since I'm not the one asserting that somehow, the stars, planets and everything else has an effect on human behavior, emotions, etc., the burden of proof is not on me to disprove your statements. Rather, it's on you to prove them. Until there has been some exhaustive, repeatable scientific studies done on astrology, I will certainly label it rank superstition and junk pseudoscience.
All this being said, I started the "ad hominem" fest this time and I apologize. I will simply say that I find astrology next to useless for anything other than a conversation piece and that I value most of your views, while I find your belief in astrology to be somewhat quaint and strange, just as you view my lack of belief as the same.
You ATTACKED me, then accuse ME of the ad hominem? If you don't like astrology, you have every opportunity to bypass my posts.
You have not studied the subject, and therefore are merely touting prejudices that you acquired along your path, utterly IGNORANT of the subject matter. Time is too precious for me to waste on arguing with you. Strange that you use the same verbiage and basis for attack as several other "poster names." No matter how many times I do my best to defend my point of view, you surface to repeat the same allegations. It is tiring, nor do I claim to suffer fools well.
I made a somewhat personal comment toward you in my first post. Here's exactly what I said: "Not to get you going on a rant, Siouxrose but, damn, the superstitious astrology junk just gets me sometimes." I did preemptively accuse you of ranting but, I did not attack you personally about astrology. I apologized for my statement in my last post. However, in the past, you have attacked me and others who disagree with your astrological interpretations of events. If anything, I'm guilty of preemptively reacting to something you didn't do. I'm only human. :)
Also, you should not assume that I know absolutely nothing about astrology. On the contrary, I studied astrology in depth and actually used to cast natal charts, synastry charts and horoscopes for people. I met and studied with Kelly Lee Phipps back in 1999. I used to carry around ephemerides and sketch pads, just to do charts for people. I never charged a dime nor accepted any money for doing it. I also read Tarot and practiced other types of divination. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that I was 'skilled' in these things, only that I know something about them and more than enough to speak on their efficacy. I assert that there is no scientific proof, at all, to support the efficacy of astrology or any other so-called divination method. Most readings are so general and vague, they could fit most anyone, especially if you (like most practicing astrologers/diviners) ask for a bit of information from your clients before casting your charts. If you have some proofs, other than easily rebutted pseudoscience (usually loosely based on quantum mechanics theories), I'd love to see them. I may lack a belief in astrology but, I am not ignorant of the subject.
One more thing. If I sound the same as others that 'attack' you, perhaps it's because they may feel the same way about your astrological interpretations of events, as I do. That I write similar verbiage as they do, hardly constitutes some 'conspiracy' against you personally or an attack upon you. I've readily acknowledged (see my first post) when I do agree with you and will continue to do so. Nor do I think you're a fool, as you think I am. I just think you're a very smart lady who practices a bit of intellectual dishonesty in the name of 'spirituality', whatever that means.
I've been here a little over 2 years also, so I guess we joined around the same time. I too am an atheist, so we have a few things in common. I also happen to be a life long amateur astronomer, and a skeptic.
As long as people don't try to make laws to push their beliefs on me or others, I don't care what they believe in. After lengthy verbal bouts trying to reason with people who refuse to believe in climate change, or that we really landed on the moon I realize you can almost never change someones mind about what they believe in, so I don't bother any more. All that said, I still think siouxrose is good people, but she'll never change me from an astronomer, to an astrologer.
After reading here and posting here for better than 2 years, I have noticed that that articles about the total corruption of the US government/Corporate/military complex appear to he accelerating. It seems that we are rapidly heading towards an immovable wall of reality we are about to crash into. One I was HOPING would happen after I have left this Earth. Oh well not much I can do about it one way or the other.
We have an 8 week old puppy. My first dog as an adult. I was always more of a cat person, but my wife wanted to try a little dog for a change. So between the pup and the garden work, there has not been much time to read or write here. In some ways that may be better for me, because helplessly watching the rampant corruption spin out of control just raises my blood pressure, while watching the puppy lowers it.
The one good thing about this site is that I can read things here that make me realize that I am not crazy. When I watch the M$M they might as well be talking to me about the goings on, on Pluto. I watch it with total detachment. It is almost all lies spun by the rich, and presented by the rich. The rich tell me I should watch a wedding of a rich family this Friday. A family who simply inherited their wealth. Well I aint buying it, and I aint watching it. I'd rather pick up puppy poop.
As I watch the little dog hop through the grass on a sunny day, acting so happy to be alive, it makes what some people do to amass wealth and power seem even more sicker and pointless. I wish there really was a hell so they could rot in it for eternity, instead of the long dreamless sleep we all most likely get. Ha ha, total socialism when you die, I wonder if that will make Rush roll over in his grave some day.
All I can say now is puppies good, people bad. Good luck out there in the real world, it's getting more ugly every day. Gotta go the puppy is on the loose!
You are Lucky!
NC-Tom, I've loved reading your posts for the last few so, keep 'em coming. I guess the thing that gets me is that I've read Siouxrose's posts for years now and she makes some amazing points. Her posts bring a powerful feminist stance to bear and her understanding of the existing patriarchal societal mores blow me away. She's has such an bright intellect that I cannot understand her embrace of the pseudoscience of astrology. That said, I still value her input.
BTW, I couldn't agree with you more about the wall of reality about to hit us all. There are going to be a lot of folk that are going to experience a rude awakening in not such a few years from now. A lot of silly beliefs and arguments we have now, won't matter so much then. Keep petting the puppies, kissing the kiddos and enjoy the days we have on this awesome planet.
i have many dogs and let them live their full life with dignity. i love weimaraners-but have none now. last weim was adopted from a rescue kennel.i am a "dog lover!!" have taken care of strays-taking them to get spayed-(then adopting them) i agree with nctom-gotta enjoy the the small things, because sometimes-an exploding head is all that results from thebig picture. anyhow i wish that i was as clear headed as some of the posters on this site. your comments are eye openers.
I do not doubt that you have ---- it shows ----- but I am reminded of the computer acronym GIGO dh
Quote Siouxrose ----"The atmosphere in Amerika is approaching that of The Dark Ages."
Seems to me that during that benighted era Astrology had its Zenith as a belief system. Why not find like minded folk to spew your witches brew to? dh
Thank you Black, for your understated and totally appropriate comment ---- count me in your ranks, or files, or group ---- but definitely in agreement. dh
Shouldn't we be focusing our anger on the evil greedy bastards who are destroying our planet and its inhabitants. That's whats wrong with the left.
WANKED: Whenever my posts take on an estoeric character, there are a few in the forum who become incredibly THREATENED. They gang up on me, repeatedly post to reinforce each other's narrow viewpoints (usually doing what they can to discredit me, tar my reputation, and demonize or misrepresent my beliefs), and then when I call them on this, suggest that there's a little tag team involved (and there is! and many of them have tried to continue the harassment by contacting me via my PERSONAL email address. I maintain THE record), they tell me it's my imagination, and suggest that I am paranoid.
In a progressive forum, it would be thought that unpopular beliefs (because they've been marginalized by the authoritarian church, and its modern remnant) would at least have a RIGHT to be heard. The same ones who attack me, do it over and over again. Therefore they show no vestige of tolerance for a point of view that they have never researched and hardly understand. They want to silence me. Why are they so intent upon this? If the ideas don't stand on their own, let others make determinations accordingly. Yet this constant SLANDER? It's unfair and quite disgusting.
When thinkers like Carl Jung and Jean Shinoda Bolen speak of archetypal energies, like that of Mars, the god of war, it is not the same thing as believing in Zeus or Mars as a living god-like entity. These are facets of our psychology, and when one of them is stressed at the expense of all others, society comes to represent this gross imbalance. My case for how this works is proven by the amount of $ the US spends on war, weapons, soldiers, and preparing the public (via propaganda) for all the intended future wars. Even now, when money is so necessary for programs of GENUINE social benefit, far too much is earmarked for the "sacred cow," represented by and through the MIC. I term this "Mars rules."
Using esoteric, mystical, metaphysical, and/or astrological metaphors to deepen the understanding of those forces that shape our lives (from the mundane plane and beyond), is what I can uniquely add to this forum. As a paid professional writer, it's clear to me that those who seek to deride me are also stepping over the line into LIBELOUS territory. Unlike this collection of cowards, I use my name in the forum.
I'd love to meet these clowns in person to give them a token of my gratitude.
Siouxrose, if you were merely discussing Jungian archetypes and other psychological interpretations in your posts, who would honestly concern themselves with that? When you start using pseudoscientific and mystical mumbo-jumbo, why then are you shocked when someone calls bullshit on it? And no offense but, just because you claim some 'professional' credentials to speak on such topics, doesn't make you above criticism.
I actually agree with your interpretation of the psychological martial aspects of western culture, especially in light of the rampant patriarchal slant of our cultural constructs. While I dislike the use of the term "Mars rules" and only because you have used it as a part of your astrological/mystical explanations of this cultural pathology, your interpretations seem to be mostly spot on.
There has been one thing that I've noticed, SR and I ask your forgiveness in advance if I'm incorrect. You appear to believe that simply because this is a progressive forum, that somehow, it should give your beliefs more credence than you would get elsewhere. In other words, you appear to believe that your astrological/mystical beliefs should be given just as much weight as scientific sociological/anthropological data. If this is true, I strongly disagree. As wise and as intelligent as you appear to be on these forums, your descending to Dark Age mummery to explain these events just appears to be an intellectual blind spot of yours. Trust me, you give clear and precise interpretations of these topics, without even having to go there.
I've seen a few people mention their dismay at your use of 'esoteric' metaphors to describe real world events. Some of those discussions get heated, I'm sure. However, your describing dissent or criticism as attacks on you personally, comes off as some kind of victim complex and, based on what has appeared on these forums, is not warranted. If you feel you are being libeled, then do the needful. Otherwise, try growing a thicker skin and expressing a bit of that tolerance you want for yourself. Or do I need to remind you about how many times you've called those of us, who disagree with your pseudoscience of astrology, fools, idiots, close-minded and lacking insight? Peace!
I don't have any problems with astrologers defending their profession but if there's one issue I have with SR, it's this. She's making the same mistake against those of us who are I.T. people or were and misunderstanding us in the process as you are on her beliefs and astrological thinking. Neither you nor Sioux should take this personally.
Another thing and I hate to say this but it's about karma. If anyone wants to hate me for saying this, no problem. I know we've all been wronged in our lives but who hasn't. But honestly, wishing someone to have bad Karma can bring bad Karma to you. Everything happens for a reason and I know that being in pain nobody wants to hear that. The wrongs they did were wrong but happened for a reason and the best that can be done is try to learn from those lessons. It's a bad experience but an experience. People are sinful by nature and bring other people pain even if it's not intentional. People should take care of themselves and each other. Wishing others bad karma only makes matters worse. This is why I say never ever wish anyone bad karma under any circumstances. It can and will backfire.
Siouxrose, if you're still reading this, please don't take this personally. I know you'll strongly disagree but at least think about it. You suffer, I suffer, we all suffer. But your mistake I've seen in so many conversations is repeating the "more equal than others" meme. You're a great scholar in astrology and I respect you on that. I have a lot to disagree with black_anarch on but for this one, I think he's trying to be fair. Is it too much to ask that you give him/her a chance on this one?
S & P was bribed to give their highest ratings to the banksters fraudulent securities that created 2008 crisis. S&P helped to create the crisis. Now S&P IS bribed to down grade the rating of the USG. Remember, the economic policies of the USG are the result of Reagan, who had a incapacitated mind, Alzheimer's, and Ayn Rand an amphetamine addict. These facts are politically incorrect and not taken in to consideration as why the USG has devolved into a dysfunctional, by design, kleptocracy to transfer wealth from the productive labor sector of the economy to the non productive criminal WEALTHY PREDATORY CAPITALIST WELFARE KINGS, many of which pay no or little taxes and whose worldwide assets are protected by the Pentagon protection racket scheme of; fund US, the Pentagon, or else......! Or else what, 9/11!
well danny says they control the country and then shows some of the ways - "they" own everything from the politicians to the banks and everything in between
they have a multi pronged approach to their takeover that leaves the so called "left" (sic) breathless and woozy, stranded on their couches
they have so much more energy - they have a plan, a goal and the means to get there
the left has - well, not much
usually they have over inflated senses of self-worth and they don't like to get "upset", whatever that means
medmed, I'm sorry, but the left does have goals: Universal Healthcare, free education on all levels, environmental responsibility, support of organized labor to name a few. If filling their coffers with more gold is a goal, then yes the right has direction. The left also has energy but it is marginalized or ignored by the MSM. And it's the right who have an inflated sense of self worth, inflated by ignorance and superstition. Those at the top of the right wing pyramid believe they were ordained to rule. They are the chosen ones.
"as long as they work and breed..."
PHILI: Yes!
In this particular epoch where Mammon rules, naturally those well-endowed with funds (or given access to them) hold more clout, power, and influence. Even the Bible relates that it's harder for a rich man to part with his money, than for a camel to make it through the eye of a needle. This helps to explain why significant, empowered figures on the Left may not donate money to those causes that would liberate them from their cherished funds. The Right, of course, need not face this moral dilemma. They just soak the coffers with the front $ that will come back to them ten-fold through the compliance of politicians (and thus policy) that's been so efficiently and deliberately purchased.
Therefore to blame the Left's ideology, for the moral lapse of our times, and how by its very nature it favors capital (and those in possession of vast sums of it) is yet another way to bludgeon the Left... which makes me question the motives of some who adopt this position or frame of analysis.
doubt all you want sioux - all i said is that they have more energy
gonna argue that?
sounds like your upset
they have so much and we so little is a canard, often used these days aint it - i bet the sum net worth of the folks who threw out the dictator in tunisia is less than ours but they did it
medmed, I guess if you equate energy with greed, deception, violence and larceny, then, by all means, the right is more energetic. You question others for proof of their beliefs then repond with vauge slogans. Neocons can afford to be lazy as others do the real work.
A friend of mine who studied to be a Rabbi had a different take on the whole rich man-camel-needle thing.
He said that there once was a narrow mountain pass called The Eye of the Needle. When caravans passed through, the packs had to come off of the camels so that they could squeeze through. So all the parable is really saying is "you can't take it with you", which to me makes a lot more sense than the common interpretation.
FYI, cities had what was referred to as the "needle gate" which was used after the main gates of cities were closed for the day.Entry had to be made through the "needle gate" and the camels were packed with goods which had to be unloaded if the camels could not fit through the "needle gate". In the final analysis the meaning is essentially the same except that the "needle" is a gate that the load bearing camels could not fit through.
The Left is dysfunctional. It will never attain any of these "goals". The Press is not the Left's problem, its the Left itself. It's inability to focus on a few core issues while reaching out to middle class working folks instead of alienating them will insure it stays this way. Its political party of choice should tell you everything. Its a complete farce. Everyone knows it.
Until there is fresh, new and credible leadership in the Left, there is little reason to contribute money, time or energy. Sad, but it's simply too scattered, broken and corrupt.
MOON: Perhaps inadvertently you have adopted the Right's favorite Meme.
How about the assassination of so many Left leaders?
How about the intimidation campaigns currently underway? You know, little items like peoples' homes broken into due to their political commitments to social justice?
How about the right wing's control of media? How often do you see Chomsky, Glenn Greenwald, or Chris Hedges interviewed on a MAINSTREAM broadcast? (FAIR compiled data that showed that prior to the War on Iraq, about 90% of those invited onto prominent talk shows endorsed the naked aggression.)
How about the spying on citizens and pre-emptive arrests of would-be activists?
How about the $ universities depend upon, and it's being withheld if professors speak too liberally about subjects the elites would like to keep cloaked?
How about the way Tea Party idiots get tons of press coverage, but meaningful protests remain invisible?
How about the way someone like Sarah Palin can place a "target" over Gabrielle Giffords, and when the woman gets shot by a loose keg, the "Freedom of Speech" clause is used to protect her right to incite hatred?
How about Bradley Manning's treatment, or the campaign to slay Julian Assange?
How about the silencing of whistleblowers?
How about the marginalization of activists who don't toe the corporate line?
How about the Unitary Executive determining whom to arrest, hold in an offshore prison, and deem guilty before any trial?
How about the off-shoring of good jobs and very strident attempts to knee-cap the remaining unions?
How about the military's tentacles being expanded into every state, so that loyalty to the MIC (in trade for a paycheck) buys complicity with right wing causes?
How about the rise of Christian fundamentalism (and to a lesser effect, Zionism) and its impact on politics?
You ignore all the CAUSATIVE factors (nor have I covered them all), and then make it about blaming the Left? That makes a lot of sense... unless you're rooting for "the other side."
A good analogy of the right versus left debate would be black rabbits forced to survive on the tundra of our far north.
They would not long survive. They would not have all the advantages that the white rabbits have. The wolves would eat them because they would stand out against the snow. It is not because white rabbits are better organised or smarter. It is because the environment that they inhabit works against them and is best suited to their characteristics.
Now this the context of a natural environment.
Apply that same reasoning to the man created "environment" we call Capitalism and its inequitable distribution of wealth and power. How can those on the left be blamed for a lack of cohesiveness and the like when the entire system by design favors those whose primary goal is the pursuit of wealth and power?
No he did not state a fact. He stated an opinion based on his observations of the "left" without considering the context under which the left has to operate.
Understanding the context leads to one making a more reasonable conclusion as to the solutions to the same then does leaving that context out.
An all too typical reply. I suggest you revisit the thread as your ability to comprehend is severely lacking. You obviously missed on that context again. The concept is not that difficult to understand.
Thank you GW. That was an interesting analogy to use to make the point.
Maciek: Perhaps the issue is what you regard AS the left. If in your mind, sold-out Democratic "centrists" represent that category, then your Left-right castigation would make sense. Of course that means you have your OWN definition for what constitutes the Left.
NC TOM: Yours is the kind of tolerance I can appreciate. I don't post here to convert others to an astrological belief system. It is, however, a sensibility that is missing from all sorts of discourse. In the late 19th century, there were salons all through Europe where the intellectuals gathered to speak about Spiritism, reincarnation, the journey of the soul, and how one lifetime's acts influenced another's. This is LOST in our material epoch, as if only science and religion have a "dog" in the grand intellectual fight.
Not everyone likes spicy food. For those who are not stuck on only the "American diet," my posts are sprinkled with enough cosmic spices to ignite new questions, and perhaps invite minds to step beyond familiar boundaries.
If this species of inquiry is not attractive to some, I urge them to bypass my posts. That's all. Instead, there are a few who have a HABIT of attacking me, then they try to make my reaction into the objectionable item. I've also noticed that some occupy these threads to create divisiveness, and then they yell back, "Mark! Note how divided the Left is. Its members can't agree on anything!" Interesting how the circular firing squad is PAID to operate.
This time, I agree with you SR and applaud your insight. dh
Ditto !
"assassination of left leaders" very astute. The list of enemies for JFK, RFK, MLK were: FBI, CIA, MICC,organized crime, LBJ, Nixon, big oil just to name the most prominent. JFK thwarted the Pentagon's attempt to start 3 nuclear wars, It wanted to war over the Bay of Pig's, Berlin Wall, Cuban missile crisis and Vietnam was the Pentagon war in waiting. The USG investigations of these 3 assassinations and 9/11 come to the conclusion that the destiny and fate of the USA is determined by 22 men, 20 Muslims, and two white men, 3 lone crazed assassins, Oswald, James Earl Ray, Sirhan Sirhan and the 19 9/11 hijackers. Americans have pretty much bought into the USG investigation has concluded that 22 men have determined the fate of the USA. Funny, this information isn't in the history books.
"the left has - well, not much"
In terms of money, political influence (redundant, I know) media coverage and almost any other standard measure of power, you are correct.
But the left has one thing on its side, maybe the only thing: REALITY.
The right is awash in money and power, but it's playing a losing game. Republican policies, which have been stupidly adopted by the Democrats, are guaranteed to FAIL. The coming economic collapse will not only change the game, it will flip the whole table over.
Be ready.
My notion of reality is based upon extensive reading about history, economics, science, politics, military history and philosophy. If you think those things are "partisan idiocy", than you really are crass.
As for your second sentence, it is hard to rebut since it is incomprehensible.
You sure are abrasive, always quick to call other people idiots.
Maybe someday I'll get to meet you in the "streets" that you talk about.
I don't think you will mistake me for Ivy League.
Apology accepted. To apologize shows character, not weakness.
CHAOKOH: I agree with you. As Martin Luther King related, the universe arcs TOWARDS justice, and those who want a world with fairer arrangements and a more humane use of resources are on the side of that justice.
MED: Looks like you're the one boasting for a fight. My point was about the era we are in, and the power of capital, and how it favors those with access. There is no equivalent on the Left to the type of investment in think tanks that the Right has funded for 30 years. Through this "intellectual" network, experts have been christened and granted enormous influence in media channels. This is a MAJOR factor in why so many debates start off right of center and remain there. The power of MONEY cannot be under-estimated in how it empowers the right and handicaps the Left. And since there are SO MANY issues that require attention, the Left, endowed with a conscience, has a LOT on its plate. In contrast, all the right gives a damn about is protecting a hierarchy based on rules and privileges that favor a small percentage of "chosen" people.
Those who blame the Left, suggesting it has no cohesive purpose are in self-destruct (blame the victim) mode. Certainly the masses have power. However, it was one thing to stand up to the Bastille with pitchforks and quite another to come up against the weapons, numbers of uniformed agents of the status quo, and the surveillance that provides them with a pre-emptive edge.
These are NOT ordinary times, and the elites have learned from previous revolutions how to detract/detain/diffuse crowds before they fulfill their tasks. The holding device used in Wisconsin is diffusing the initial will of The People, and has any Arab nation managed to gain a truly representative government for all its efforts? Word is, one dictator is being replaced by another, specifically one friendly to D.C.
The propaganda think tanks are tax exempt and therefore funded in part by the American taxpayers which by doing to fund the propaganda created by the "stink tanks" to instill the American public with mindlessness. The propaganda of sociopathic, psychopathic, happy talk psychobabble optimism recited by the MSM to their audiences for the purpose of mindlessness propaganda, intended to and successfully, which is the inability and/or not knowing to discern thoughts from facts.
We have seen in the USA, corruption to such a degree, that there has been a massive transfer of wealth form those who had the least, to those who have had the most. This growing corruption is, or has, destroyed the United States as we have known it. Reversing this process by instilling an ethic of honesty and honorable behavior among all citizens privileged to hold any position of influence, will begin the process of a massive recall of the wealth from the corrupt, criminal ruling class, back to the people. It must be the goal of the USA to close the income gap. It is a true indicator of the health of a society, and right now, the USA is terminally ill, and the return of the wealth to the people must be our goal. The cure will not be pleasant for the elite. No pain, no gain. Acting together around specific issues is the way to do it. For starters, the people of the Northeast need to unite with Vermont in closing down the same type reactor that is gone amok in Fukushimo, Japan. The money people want to run the reactor into the ground for profit. The risk to New England is so far beyond what is acceptable that it is insane to even discuss the issue. We have to unite against corporate control. It is killing us all. Enough !
"We have to unite against corporate control. It is killing us all. Enough !"
uh-huh! mlk, the freedom riders, rosa parks managed to focus frustrated anger into a universal, energized grass roots movement FOR a more egalitarian society. fair is fair regardless of color, religion et al. the GAME of politics, insults, fear mongering and all that lovely vitriol to separate and conquer which leads this country far from the path "toward a more perfect union." why, oh why, i wonder do so many yanks watch the stock market as if just getting it right will make all rich? we know the "continuously increasing quick profits" motive to serve the expectations of top investors require no moral guideline. "it's okay to f@^k the environment, fudge on safety regulations, if that increases immediate profits."
do people like to keep the 1% of 1% of the fantastically and utterly corrupted on the iconic pedestal because i might win that lottery ticket to the fabled easy street?
When has Wall Street ever lost? If it ever came close, Bush and Obama would be there to bail them out. Until capitalism is abolished and replaced with socialism, Wall Street will never lose. It is capitalism after all that gives them all the power to do what Danny says they have been doing all along. Two parties or 50 parties, it does not matter.
They cannot go on screwing things up and getting government bailouts forever. Eventually they will screw things up so badly that repair will be impossible. Their actions could easily render the money they would need to be bailed out worthless. The global economic system almost collapsed in 2008 due to their crooked scheming. It is the world economy, not just that of the United States, that these chislers are toying with as if they own the place.
Replacing capitalism with socialism is a tall order. There is as yet no Socialist Party with a socialist platform.
That is correct. A replay of 2008 will happen just before the 2012 presidential selection. Since Obama has foolishly cast his lot with the Wall Street crooks, he will be out..
The next collapse will be worse than 2008 and there will be no taxpayer bailout to re-inflate all of the asset bubbles like last time.
Investment advice: canned food, batteries, water containers.
Get ready for president Trump (or some other republican clown).

2008 crash deja vu: We’ll relive it, and soon
Commentary: New bubble is hotter, bigger than the last one
CHAOKOH: I agree about an inevitable crash, although I'm not sure if it will come prior to the election. Obama is doing the elite's bidding. Why get rid of him? Unless they need a fall guy to keep the rip-off going. Another anomaly is that the FED keeps printing $, and all that "loose change" helps to artificially buoy up Wall St. Then, too, there's always Amerika's military might to "convince" any recalcitrant foreign authorities of the necessity of remaining on the bus... the economic no-where bus that just keeps the illusions spinning.
Given the net losses seen recently in agriculture/land/homes/infrastructure in Pakistan, Australia, and Japan... for the Stock Market to reveal not the slightest perturbation, added to the destruction of the US Gulf, and April's record in tornado outbreaks... the MEASURES reflected on Wall Street are 100% decoupled from actual quotients of Wealth or Well-being (on a collective scale). In other words, the entire thing is a VERY expensive farce. Since the players own the politicians and the media, until the farce is UNIVERSALLY recognized, it may continue on its fictitious course.
The "invention" of derivatives in lieu of gold or a solid basis for currency exchanges has effectively polluted the entire global financial nexus. The same thing is true of agriculture thanks to a war-criminal organization like Monsanto tainting seedstocks all across the globe, replacing what Nature built, with STERILE for-purchase clones, denuded of the Life Force itself.
The genuine has been substituted for the artificial, and most people have been deluded by the sophisticated waves of artifice that pass for sound stewardship issued (like edicts) from "high" places.
Much of what passes for politics and/or business is CRIMINAL on a grand scale.
"...the MEASURES reflected on Wall Street are 100% decoupled from actual quotients of Wealth or Well-being..."
You have noticed that too? I suspect that the reason for this de-coupling from the oft-derided "fundamentals" (a.k.a. reality) is due to the fact that Wall Street traders (and their computers) function like compulsive gamblers. They are betting on stock prices just for the sake of betting. They are not rational. Except, that is, for the high-rollers who have rigged the game.
As for the timing of the collapse, I'm relying on Paul B. Farrell of Market Watch. Check out some of his back articles.

As for the hapless shill Obama, if the economy crashes on his watch, he will be thrown out by Wall Street in order to deflect blame from themselves.
