When a Country Goes Insane
This must be what it’s like when a country goes insane, when it falls down a rabbit hole and tries to pretend that everything is normal.
It can’t tell truths from lies. Hucksters pose as upright men, and people imagine they are Solons, avatars of insight come down from the ages. Sleazy operators pass themselves off as statesmen, as thinkers of deep gravitas, and the crowds, unable to distinguish sanctimony from sincerity, bravado from bullshit, lap it up.
Let’s be clear. It was the Republicans who wrecked the economy. Both their people and their policies drove the economy into the ditch. They wrecked the economy not once, but twice in the last eighty years.
So Republicans condescending to instruct Americans about how to fix the economy is like the captain of the Titanic lecturing shipping operators about safe procedures for navigating the north Atlantic. No sane society would tolerate it. But this one does.
How bad is it this time?
Six million people have lost their jobs. Twenty five million are underemployed. Many will never work again. Eight trillion dollars of middle class wealth has been destroyed in the housing collapse. One out of four mortgage holders are under water, owing more on their home than it’s worth. Fifty million people are living in poverty. One out of eight Americans are on food stamps. One of every two children will be on food stamps at some point in their lives.
How much worse can it get?
And the rich? Corporate profits are at an all-time high. But corporate taxes — not the imaginary “nominal” rates they whine so bitterly about, but the taxes actually paid — are among the lowest in the industrial world. Income inequality is at its highest level since 1917. Between 2000 and 2006, two thirds of all the growth in the entire economy went to the top 1%. And the “too big to fail” banks, those that wrecked the economy and extorted trillions of dollars from the government to rescue them? They are now even bigger.
How much better can it get?
And the Republicans’ response? The working and middle class need to pay. Never mind that it was Reagan and Bush I who quadrupled the national debt in only 12 years, and Bush II who doubled it again in only eight, all to grease the pockets of their wealthy base. It’s the working and middle class who need to be bled. They still have assets that can be milked from them. They can still be made more subservient, more docile.
They need to give up the union protections that have afforded them the slightest bargaining power against the largest organizations on earth. They need to give up environmental protections, even though every one of them have rocket fuel in their bodies from water contamination. They need to give up the mortgage interest deductions that allowed them to buy and own their own homes.
They need to give up government help with college loans that allowed their children to get the education they could never have. They need to give up any expectation of extended unemployment insurance, even though there are five people looking for every job available. They need to give up the retirement protections that Social Security has promised them for the past 75 years.
In other words, they need to give up any expectation of security, or dignity. They need to give up any childish illusions that they have any say in the government, that it is operated for any such quaint Madisonian ends as “the general welfare.” They need to put on their kneepads and accustom themselves to being grateful servants to their new feudal masters, assuming their masters will have them. It’s sickening.
Even though it was trillions of dollars of government bail-outs that saved the banks and their shareholders from bankruptcy… Even though it was government stimulus that reversed the 750,000 monthly job losses that were savaging the economy when Obama took office… Even though it was government FDIC insurance that protected millions of savers from being wiped out, and unemployment insurance that mitigated the collapse of aggregate demand, staving off another Great Depression…
It’s the poor, the working, and the middle classes that must be made to pay, for in the Republicans’ psychotic world government is existentially bad because it is through government that democracy tries to modulate the worst excesses of capitalism, which is existentially good.
It’s almost surrealistic. But decades of relentless Republican hate-mongering against the government has done its job.
Never mind that it was government that pulled off the greatest feat of social engineering in history. In 1900, only 4% of Americans graduated from high school. By 2000, more than 80% did. It was this mass educated public that made possible the most technically sophisticated economy in the history of the world.
It was government that won both World War I and World War II, leaving the U.S. economy astride the world like a colossus, able to harvest the fruits for decades. It was the government GI Bill program that educated a generation of young people to ultimately defeat the Soviet Union.
It was the government that wired every house in the country for electricity during the Great Depression, setting up the largest household consumer-goods market in the world in the 1950s: home appliances. And it was government guarantees for home loans that set off the greatest building boom in the history of the world: suburbia.
It was government that paved more than 3 million miles of road between 1930 and 1960, making possible the massive economic boom associated with automobiles, mass mobility, and more. It was government research that invented the graphical user interface and the Internet.
None of that matters.
Hate is stronger than logic and more than anything else, Republicans love their hate. It’s the only thing that gives them power. The more vicious, the more loony they are, the more they are treated like savants, like prophets channeling some higher wisdom, come though it may from the self-loathing gutter of political prostitution. They pull stuff out of their ass and brazenly pass it off as stone tablets. And people swoon.
Of course, you can understand why. The media genuflect before gibberish and idolize idiocy. They are the media-tors of a Gresham’s Law of public discourse where bad information drives out good. For their own slick whoring they become “players,” while everybody else is left with a debauched civic currency, a crushed economy, and a collective impotence that makes true democracy and true prosperity impossible.
Alice in Wonderland would be amazed, even repulsed, that such cultural pathology passes for intelligence, even civilization. At least she stood up to the inanities of the Mad Hatter, the insanities of the Queen of Hearts, the arrogant deceits of Humpty Dumpty. But she didn’t live in today’s America.

Show AllYes the Republicans are the worse, but the Democrats enable the destruction and add to it. The time is now to throw support to alternatives of the broken two party system. A third party becomes strong when we decide to support it. All those who did not vote in the last election are more than enough to enable a third party to become competitive with the corporatists. Stop giving up and make them respect our needs. Put third party candidates in Congress and they can work with the few good Democrats.
US voters are crazy. i just heard a poll on TV today that said that the best president of all US history is Ronald Reagan. Damn i thought George Washington, John Adams, FDR, Kennedy and many others were a lot better than Reagan. I mean what the hell is going on in the brain of Americans. This article is right, this country is full of more insane people, than people with common sense. We are doomed
.
It is so clear that the first and most important way to rule the "middle class" is to divide and conquer. The corporate media, the money changers and all that rule today have been great in labeling red and blue, liberal and conservative, left and right when really we are all in this together. Isn't there some class action suit that we call all participate in to get our money back from the cheating politicians and their corporate buddies?
mia: you have to realize that most people in USA are very anti-socials, an individualists, and there is lots of family-narcissism and group-narcissism, and the country is very divided. Divided into languages, into cultures, another thing is that people in most neighborhoods don't talk to each other. This is a nation of loners which will make it almost impossible to create a united front against the 5% oligarchic ruling elites
EVIDENCE-BASED THINKING: IF REPUBLICAN PARTY DESTROYED USA ECONOMY IN 8 YEARS, AND IF OBAMA DESTROYED USA IN THESE 3 YEARS = THE ANSWER IS TO HATE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, TO HATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND TO LOVE GREEN PARTY, RALPH NADER OR ANY OTHER THIRD PARTY !!
EMOTIONAL-FAITH BASED THINKING = IF A CHURCH PASTOR, IF CNN, IF FOX NEWS, IF UNIVISION WITH JORGE RAMOS PRAISES AND DEFENDS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY = THE ANSWER IS TO VOTE REPUBLICAN PARTY BACK INTO POWER OR CHELSEA CLINTON INTO POWER IN 2012 OR 2016
SO THE SOLUTION FOR AMERICA = SCIENTIFIC THINKING, RATIONAL THINKING SKILLS COURSES !!
.
Let me be clear: I for one am sick to bloody death of this inane phrase 'Let me be clear', which as far as I can tell, went into fifth gear with Puppet Obama as though he's trying to convince everyone that he's really saying 'Let me tell the truth', or 'Let me cut the crap.'
Let me be clear: Saying 'Let me be clear' is NOT equivalent to saying 'Let me stop this historic pattern of absolute lies and filthy propaganda bullshit that you the people have been fed by any number of Puppets before me, and which those pulling my strings expect me to continue.'
In fact, wouldn't it cause strokes and heart attacks coast to coast if Obama turned out to actually be for real, instead of this goddamn 'brand' and corporate whore and coward, and whipped out a pair of scissors, or -*horrors* - a box-cutting knife at his next public appearance and raised his voice and brandished the scissors, declaring, 'THE SHIT STOPS HERE!! I'M CUTTING THE FUCKING STRINGS!!! WITH THE HELP OF EVERYONE WHO DOESN'T WANT TO LIVE IN NEO-FEUDALISM, STARTING WITH THE CROWD IN WISCONSIN, WE ARE HENCEFORTH GOING TO ROYALLY FUCK THE FASCISTS!!! WHO'S WITH ME?!'
Right. And there goes the proverbial flock of pigs right now.
I'm very keen on Mr Freeman's article, for its language and relatively no-bullshit telling-it-straight. At least the part that he's telling straight, for I also agree with dreamjoehill et. al. about his conveniently leaving out the Democrats.
Hmm... Let me be clear: FUCK THE DEMOCRATS. Which of course goes double for that nauseating bunch that you'd beat up at your house party just on general principles if they showed up - the Republicans. Goddamn scum.
You are right Mr Freeman - the country has gone insane, but it will never get any more sane until the unholy trinity is addressed: Monetarism, Masculinism and Militarism. Deal with 'the dangerously limited ways Americans have codified masculinity', CUT THE FUCKING MILITARY - THE WHOLE STINKING THING - PEOPLE, MATERIEL, BUDGET - BY 75%, and wrap your rapidly-feudalizing skulls around the idea that you cannot make money the religion, have unbridled hyper-capitalism, and democracy. IS THERE SOME PART OF THIS AMERICANS DO NOT UNDERSTAND AT THIS LATE STAGE?
Oh, and here's another slap in the 'exceptional' American face: the country is doomed until there is SOCIALIZED EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE. YOU HAVE A SOCIALIZED MILITARY. SO CUT THE BULLSHIT, HYPOCRITICAL FEAR/HATRED OF ANYTHING SOCIALISTIC.
I had wondered what's the difference between liberal and progressive.
I had been under the impression that "progressive" was just another name for "liberal" that people want to use because "liberal" has become a bad word.
According to this article, there are differences (also this article explains why many Democrats are hesitant about carrying out more "progressive" solutions to problems):
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-sirota/whats-the-difference-betw_b_9140.html
My own personal definition of Liberal: people who want things like universal healthcare, out of Iraq/Afghanistan, privacy rights, help for the homeless, good public schools, justice, equality, etc.
READ THIS REVIEW OF THE BOOK "DISCOVERING AMERICA AS IT IS" BY VALDAS ANELAUSKA, A LITHUANIAN WHO MOVED TO USA AND JUDGED THE AMERICAN OLIGARCHIC-CAPITALISM AS EXTREMELY VIOLENT AGAINST THE MAJORITY OF AMERICAN PEOPLE
http://www.amazon.com/Discovering-America-As-Valdas-Anelauskas/dp/0932863299/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Anelauskas does the American people a huge favor in writing this book. Had it been written by someone born in the U.S., the author would have been denounced as a subversive communist traitor and invited to move to Russia. But Anelauskas was born in Lithuania and grew up under Soviet imperialism. He knows the system well. Until coming to the U.S., he had few kind words for it, which earned him repeated arrest and, ultimately, exile to the U.S., where he took up with the likes of Newt Gingrinch and Phil Gramm. Being an intelligent and educated person, it did not take him long to see through the lies of the American right. In retrospect, he now sees there were some positive qualities to the USSR. The irony is not lost on him, and it is somewhat discomforting to me--having no love lost for the Soviet model--as he says some things were better, and certainly more humane, in the USSR than in the U.S. Yet, it is hard to argue he is not correct.
Discovering America As It Is systematically exposes the lies of the American right, Republicans AND Democrats alike. Some of Anelauskas' most scathing comments are reserved for Republican in Democrat drag, Bill Clinton, whom Anelauskas clearly demonstrates waged an even more merciless and devastating war against the least affluent 40% of the American population than did Reagan. Anyone who thinks a (Daddy George) Bush or Dole presidency would have been more harmful to the poor, or who thinks, somehow, Al Gore would be the "lesser of the evils" will have to reexamine their logic after reading Discovering America.
Anelauskas' work is meticulously documented from a myriad of sources--academic scholarship, poll data, census data, think tanks, studies by agencies of international organizations such as the United Nations, non-governmental organizaitons, government data from the U.S. and other nations, particularly other capitalist nations. The sheer volume of information, of sources, and the consistency of the data, truly, is astounding. During the recent presidential election, George Dubya raised the spectre of "class warfare" in response to (another Republican in Democrat drag) Al Gore's so-called "populist" nomination acceptance speech. The data Anelauskas presents makes it crystal clear there is a long running class war in the U.S.--a war of the most affluent 10% of the population against the other 90%. And the 10% are winning!, primarily because they control all of the major institutions of soceity; in partiuclar the political institutions, schools, media and churches.
Anyone who reads this book should recognize Alan Greenspan, Phil Gramm, Milton Friedman, and David Horowitz for the lying charlatans they are. Anyone who reads this book should realize the Democrat party is as much the party of the propertied class as the Republican party. And anyone who thinks the there is any worthiness to capitalism as an economic system, or who believes the propertied class is not waging unremitting class war against eveyone else should consider the words, not of Karl Marx, but of Abraham Lincoln: "These capitalists act harmoniously and in concert to fleece the people."
If I were to fault Anelauskas, it would be for implying America's "ultra-capitalism" is some perverse, grotesquely mutated version of an otherwise viable economic ideology. One need only read the originators of capitalist ideology--Malthus, Ricardo, Adam Smith--to see they fully understood what they were creating. They knew capitalism would be a tremendously productive economic system; but, as they followed the logic of the economic principles they were developing and articulating, they also realized it was a system which eventually reduces virtually the entire population of capitalist societies to starvation while all the wealth becomes vested in the hands of an ever shrinking elite. As they themselves predicted, capitalism is an economic system which ultimately destroys itself and takes everyone with it. It, quite literally, is the Titanic of economic systems; and its advocates preach it is unsinkable. Because the version of capitalism practiced in most European nations is not as pure, not as true to the principles of capitalist ideology as in the U.S., the inherently destructive consequences of the ideology are not as pronounced and as profound as in the U.S. The European nations may be "behind" us, but what is happening here will happen to them; it is inherent in the logic of capitalist ideology.
That fault notwithstanding, the book is superb. Only the blindest of readers will not be profoundly affected and disturbed.
The basis of the manmade societal structure is insane. It's continuation can only devolve into deeper insanity.
Ah, go back to your cave then.
My ancestors came here 350 years ago.
Too late to go back now, although I gladly would if they would give me citizenship in
Holland.
That's okay brother, I wouldn't wantto take your hard earned bottle money.
Ecoeng sez: "'..America with 1% (mostly 'The Tribe' too you damned fools) holding 99% of the wealth and controlling 95% of the media'"?
'The Tribe'?
'Mostly Native Americans own 99% of the wealth and 95% of the media?
Those casinos must be doing really well.
Or were you talking about some other 'tribe'?
Ecoeng: Why do people like yourself seem to consider CD some kind of stormfront dating site?
The are many here who are pro-Palestinian, but that doesn't mean they've bought into that 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' world-wide Jewish conspiracy crap.
Why can't bigots ever see their own bigotry?
Your initial post just hinted at your full philosophy. Thanks for expanding on it. Most people who believe as you do won't come to a progressive site and say what they really think. They hide behind codewords and generalized references to 'The Jews'.
I appreciate your candor.
There are only (2) positions in life, (True-false - Up-Down -Front-Back - Rich-Poor. Policticians choose between Rich-Poor; here is where it gets tricky, politicians side with the rich, which means Repugs and Demos are on the same team. A snake has a head and body (Tail), the Repugs are the head and the Demos are the tail; the same moving deady organism.
It can all be condensed into a two-word sentence:
Mission Accomplished.
