The Congressman King-Reincarnated as Senator Joe McCarthy
This kind of inquisition violates the spirit of the Constitution.
— Albert Einstein, Letter to Wm. Frauenglass (1953)
Peter King is the envy of (a) former Senator Joseph McCarthy and (b) the folks in Salem MA who were looking for, respectively, communists and witches. It was a hard task that they each attacked with persistence and fortitude. It was hard because to the untutored eye, witches and communists look just like the rest of us, making it difficult to distinguish them from the general population. Nonetheless, the folks in Salem and Joe were diligent in their efforts. There was, of course, always a possibility that the person identified as a witch or a communist was not in fact a witch or a communist but there was also the possibility that he or she was, and that made it all worthwhile from the inquisitors’ points of view.
The Salem Witch Trials took place in 1692 and 1693. More than 150 people were arrested and accused of witchcraft and a number were convicted. Witchcraft was, as one would expect, a capital offense, and several of those convicted were hanged. With the benefit of hindsight one can safely assume that most, if not all of those hanged, were not witches but as in all matters involving capital punishment, learning that the executed were innocent after they have been hanged makes very little difference to the executed and has never been considered by Americans to be a reason to eliminate the death penalty.
One of the next hunts for witches occurred in the 1950s and the man who served as the official huntsman was Senator Joe McCarthy. The senator’s goal was to identify Communists in the United States. The fact that the object of the hunt could not readily be identified did nothing to deter McCarthy, who made accusations against all manner of people, many of whom were not communists but might as well have been since their careers were irreparably harmed by the accusations. A ruined career was better than being hanged but was nonetheless not a very good outcome. The newest hunter of citizens he believes unworthy of their citizenship is Peter King, a congressman from New York. He has targeted a group that is going to be easy for him to identify-Muslims. Some, though not all, can be identified by their attire or by physical characteristics.
Mr. King is one of the beneficiaries of the Republican take over of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress and has been named chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. That committee deals with such things as border security and transportation security and, in addition, has the power to conduct investigations. Its investigative authority has excited Chairman King. He intends to seek out Muslims and find out why they are being such a problem.
Mr. King did not pull the idea of having hearings out of the same air that produced fictional witches and communists. According to Mr. King “When I meet with law enforcement, they are constantly telling me how little cooperation they get from Muslim leaders [when conducting terror investigations.]” By conducting these investigations Mr. King presumably will figure out how to force Muslims to cooperate with law enforcement authorities. In an article in Newsday he said he would “drive the public debate on Islamic radicalization. These hearings will be a step in that direction. It’s what democracy is all about.” He may look to some of the techniques used in Salem such as placing heavy rocks on the person being investigated until the person says what the rock placer wants him to say or dies, whichever comes first. Alternatively he can adopt the methods used by Senator McCarthy who would simply state that he was holding lists of communists employed in various parts of the government without sharing the lists with others.
Responding to criticism of his planned hearings Mr. King said it was OK with him if people called him a bigot for undertaking the hearings. Those criticizing him, he said, were simply uttering, “politically correct nonsense.” I am sure Mr. King treasures civil liberties even if preserving them means riding roughshod over them. That is the price that must be paid.
Muslims are, of course, not pleased at the prospect of the King inquisition. Rep. Keith Elison (D-Minn) the only Muslim member of Congress “explains”:: “We need to make sure that we stand for civil liberties, so we can deprive people like Osama bin Laden of the claim that Muslims are poorly treated in America. The United States is not at war with Islam.”
America is not at war with Islam but if Mr. King’s hearings go as planned, it is a safe bet that lots of Muslims will believe that Mr. King and probably the Republican party are at war with Islam. After all, the hearings were his idea and the Republican party gave him the forum.

Show AllThe Islamofascist Menace has finally refuted the ancient error shared and implemented by a majority of this nation's Founders.
It turns out after all that the only thing standing between Amerika and Doom is a King.
The Emperor on the Oval Office Throne may bide no rival, but he is always happy to welcome any King as ally and vassal. And so it comes to pass.
Trying to understand what you just posted, not getting anywhere though. Is this part of a fantasy screenplay you are writing?
Christopher Brauchli's piece, which notes that Muslims are the target of King, would be more fair if he'd mentioned that King is a Zionist Jew. Since he mentions the religion of one group of people (Muslims), then he should also mention King's religion--and perhaps even the country to which he owes his allegiance (Israel).
And, yes, the U.S. is at war with Islam/Muslims, otherwise it would not be bombing the hell out of Muslims and about half-dozen Muslim countries.
Rep. Peter King is an Irish Catholic, he is NOT a Zionist Jew.
I stand corrected :-(
OK, so he's an honorary Zionist...I
Thanks,JerzyJoe, for this inconvenient truth; it is humbling to share this heritage with Peter King and Joe McCarthy. i much prefer the association with JFK, RFK and Dan Berrigan.
This is not just a bigotry, but a stupid and careless bigotry. I am really tired of the anti-jewish bigotry of conspiracy theorists and there loose relationship with the facts.
There is every reason to adamantly oppose Israel, AIPAC and the US imperialist wars without resorting to bigotry.
BTW, I am also opposed to the anti-arab bigotry of the zionist movement and have been banned from websites for asserting that Zionism = Apartheid = Racism.
You know, things have to be *simple*, that's the most important thing. If you can't explain something in five words, it's probably not worth explaining, or even talking about. Nuances, subtleties, depth, bullshit like this doesn't matter. Making a quick judgement and prompt decision is more important than making a right judgement based on truth or even "justice", whatever that word might mean. It's about efficiency, man! Actually understanding stuff is so incredibly inefficient.
Anyway, I think this essentially boils down to the innate weakness of the left: empathy. If you have even a little bit of that poison, you can actually imagine that you are wrong and your opponent is right. This means that you can't just want to put people in two groups, "with me" and "against me", but must try to understand them as more complex entities, maybe even attributing some kind of moral and/or intellectual autonomy to them, which, combined with another age-old lie whose latest name is the "categorical imperative" would mean the need to show some respect for others' thoughts if you want that for yourself.
I mean, it's not difficult to understand why empathy doesn't work: it prohibits playing manipulative rhetorical games, thinking up stuff like "death tax", tries to measure every action based on the same principles etc etc. This is certainly not productive and efficient, both of which are clearly more important criteria than stuff like "truth" or "justice". Look at how taking right wing arguments and theories seriously and engaging in actual in depth-discussion about them did for the left.
Truth is not outside you but inside you, what you wish to be true can be true, if only you believe it enough (and can make enough people believe it too, doh), and of course, because of this, debate is about winning, not getting closer to truth. I mean, as long as the Left doesn't recognise this, it has no chance at winning; although at the moment it does, it becomes the same as the Right.
Well, it's an awfully stupid idea - to go hunting dragons, or wabbits - but someone's got to do it. Maybe this modern day Don Quixote will be able to smite that terrible dragon that's spinning in the wind.
After all, he's a Republican! They can do anything they set their minds to. Except of course, balance the budget, govern responsibly, tell the truth, make peace, conduct a war efficiently, occupy a nation, defend their positions, etc...
(note, the above criticism does not in any way suggest that the Democrats are any better at governing than the Republicans are. Indeed, to be totally clear, karl dubhe thinks that the reps and the dems are the same party with different wings. Kinda like pepsi and coke, there's no bloody difference between them.)
King who wants to force American citizens, not all just some Americans...Muslims..., to 'cooperate' with law enforcement reveals he is a dangerous demagogue with an authoritarian mindset and has little respect for our Constitutional rights that all Americans have...even American Muslims Mr. King.
That never stopped this country before...
the Salem folk were keen on dunking stools.
is that anything like dunking donuts?
If your a doughnut, yes. If your a Muslim it's more like waterboarding.
Who can name one politician that has stood up for "that God damned piece of paper"? ALL of it, not just the parts that suit them. My mind is a blank here. Tony
Ron Paul.
Ron Paul; why is there such a negative view of him? Is it for his views on a social contract with the people, so that all the people have a chance at life, liberty and the persuit of happiness? Read the article on Billy Bragg in todays CD and was taken by what he said about Socialism being organized compassion. Have to think about it, but if a truth, it would work for me. Tony
Was Ron Paul mentioned here? I am not being facetious, but i was just reading the posts and didn't follow what you were responding to, mustbefree.
He wants to do away with all government services and dog eat dogism would run rampant. The enemies of my enemies are not my friends. But that is just me. If you think Ron Paul is a socialist, you are very uninformed, which is hard to believe. So i don't know why you would even say such a thing here?
Anyway, since i saw this i am responding.
peace.
readytotransform; no way am I saying Paul is Socialist, I was asking if he would have a social contract and your answer says no and that is his negative that would keep me from him as anyone to vote for. There has to be some heart in the rules and not just a "damn" piece of paper. Tony
His first targets are the military, corporations, and corruption - hell, of a good start, wouldn't you say? Where have you been getting your information? He just wants to have 'government services' actually be beneficial! Traditional conservatives might seem scary, until you understand the entire philosophy and how it will be implemented - we don't jump off cliffs, you know, and wouldn't try to just chop off dependent's benefits like Clinton did. We go slow, analyze results, and make incremental adjustments - something the Radical Left doesn't understand. We avoid 'foreign entanglements' - ever hear that before? Then there's plenty of money left to go around for everyone - without regressive taxes.
Ron Paul is a defender of the Consitution - the best parts that offer all of us a fair chance, and provide for the less fortunate. He is appropriate to mention 'in context' anytime politics or social ramifications are discussed.
I'm a Ron Paul fan - he's an Eisenhower admirer too. Traditional conservatism at its best - and worst. But being a libertarian too, he respects that other people have different opinions on morality, religion, etc, - that's where 'states rights' comes in (and I certainly don't mean racism). I've tried to tell others about him, but the Lefties always drudge up ugly myths about him being a wacko like Ross Perot. He's not. He's a realist - and he understands economy far better than most, although I don't subscribe to his economic touchstone (that Austrian nonsense).
Maybe now some of you CDers will understand how I can sound so 'far Left' in many of my posts - we traditional conservatives aren't monsters, and we are just as progressive as most of the Left. I do - and have - read 'socialist worker's site quite often, being a regular in the past. (Still read it sometimes, as well as Marx, Engels, etc.) Most of us can afford to be generous because we're not usually impoverished - and we aren't greedy, either. The GOP today is fascist - and Ron Paul will say as much. (He'll tell you the GOP left him, not the other way around.)
I love what Ron Paul said about Wikileaks and the question he asked as to how many lives W's lies and fabrications about WMD's cost, in response to rabid facists on the right falsely claiming the leaks would "cost lives". Too bad the MSM didn't give it much airtime.
Ron was asked which Democrat he most admires. Without hesitation he said "Dennis Kucinich". We is right about WikiLeaks, our "World Policeman" attitude, allowing gays to openly serve.
I read his book "The revolution, a manifesto".
Leftist columnist Jesus A Rivas is an admirer of his.
Dear Mr. King:
Before you get to the investigation of the "M people", I would like you to examine a list that I have in my hand of known STRANGE Thought People. There are apparently 10 rules which humans are told that they are not supposed to break in this country, as it is said to be a " C person" country,so before you use the 'M" word to hunt and ferret out the "M people" I would really like you to examine this prior list from the "Cs" , those otherwise known "C" people said to be those who support the "C" values and YET, do not SEEM to be living those rules.
I: Please study that group known as the WALLSTREETERS, as many people ( in fact a majority) believe that they have been worshipping that golden calf, which is against the rules that the 'C and J peoples " talk about
II: Please talk to the U.S. mint as apparently, for a long time now, they have been producing things based on a GRAVEN IMAGE. How can you let them do this? I understand that part of this referred to a Caesar, although Caesar Chavez has been gone for some time now, so what's up with that?
III: Taking a name in vain, well OMG! ( oops) never mind. Oh and another thing, when I hear the word HOMELAND Security, it always makes me think of Hitler. Why is that and should semantics be investigated?
IV: I heard about a sabbath day, but this 24/7 country doesn't seem to have one, so perhaps you could make an exception for business...oh never mind.
V: The honoring the father aand mother thing is not doing so well, what with all of the books out from unhappy children. Even Fox news seems to say strange things about birthers rights and such. Are birthers rights a synonym for human right? Oh and I believe that the Fourth Estate is suffering from schizophrenia, and are in altered states, so is this legal? Also Is schizophrenia legal, or is it really just the devil with a blue dress on...is a blue devil state unconstitutional? I understand that HomeLand security has dumped the color code thing, so maybe you should look into this too along with those" Ms, Cs, and Js. persons"
VI: Oh, ummm the "thou shalt not kill" issue is a bit worrying and I note NO exceptions in that rule, so do we just throw that one out? Oh, but if we start throwing all the rules out, you know , like due process, free speech and that other BIG 10 list, you know in the Constitution, well wouldn't that make YOU, Mr. Kong, ( sorry, Mr. King) some kind of a terrorist because it does seem like you are looking at overthrowing both of those BIG 10 lists?
VII: What is this adultery thing with the , thou not shalt commit thing? Is it illegal for all adults only and does it cover poltical people or are they exempt? Do all ages of humans follow this, and is the age of adultery legal drinking age or voting or what, as this needs to be looked into also.
VIII: The not stealing rule, well please review rule # 1, though it may not get you much in funding if you seriously look into it. Although, I'm sure that you, Mr. King, take seriously your oath to serve the people. However, I am concerned as to the meaning of "SERVE, and does that also allow you to place apples in our mouths before any serving is done?
IX:That bearing false witness thingy, well that's kind of a hard one what with you leading the Homeland security charge, and by the way, what would be the penalty for you doing this against any "M" "C" or even 'J" peoples, not to mention other new and emerging vigilante religious groups? Will you go after Westboro Baptist church or is that a free speech issue? Does the HOMELAND trump free speech as this is a very popular topic for those Americans who really enjoy thinking; so where do you stand on this, Mr. King or will you be sitting upon a lot more rather than standing for something?
X:That coveting the neighbor's house, wife, manservant, maidservant, ox or ass, nor anything that is the neighbor's. Oh, are people in condos, or even renters allowed to keep
an ox or ass? That does kind of create a problem for the Wallstreeters and even some in Congress, as I see plenty of asses there although the oxes seem to be housed in the Citizens United Barn. It really doesn't seem as if those in Congress should have different rules than the People, you know? Perhaps that golden bull thingy on that NY street. should be looked at too. Is that animal worship which seem to conflict with rule # 1?
Well, Happy New Year and good luck in your new position, Mr. King, and if anyone throws you into the Potomac, try not to float.
Sincerely yours,
stardust
sorry dusty - shit always floats.
(which is why stools are so good for dunking - they don't go all crumbly and end up on the bottom.)
Wonderful! Thank you.
stardust; a beautiful start to the new year; brought tears to my eyes. Tony
"I wonder or perhaps don't wonder at all when Jesus said, Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, if he already knew that ... all Caesar's world will do is become Hell on Earth."
I think JC was not suggesting that one should pay taxes, which is the common take on this fable, but that money should be done away with all together.
From here in the UK, I look forward to being entertained by Mr King from time to time. Whenever the journalists at the BBC need the services of an American politician to remind the viewers and listeners that our system is so much better than the one in the USA, they get a few quotes from Pete King. Sends folks like me off to the office with a smile on our faces to think that, for all our faults as a democracy, at least we don't have anyone so utterly bone-headed a-tuggin' or a shovin' at our levers of power.
Really?
What about Nick Griffin?
Nick Griffin and his BNP pals got royally stuffed in the May geberal Election (see the CD item today about Billy Bragg for details). There's a good chance the BNP will implode, given its legal problems, and infighting in the ranks.
Peter King is a vicious raving demagogue. The other King, Rep. Steve (GOP) of Iowa is also a radical far right wing slathering hyena who claims to represent the Constitution, his version of the Constitution. The GOP is rife with these radical right wingers who claim to be big defenders of the Constitution and who want to take us back to 1927 or was it 1827? Here's a Steve King quote: "It does matter. His middle name [Obama's] does matter. It matters because they read meaning into that and the rest of the world, it has special meaning to them. They'll be dancing in the streets because of his middle name. They'll be dancing in the streets because of who his father was ... So there are implications that have to do with who he is and the positions that he has taken ... There will be dancing in the streets if he's elected president and that has a chilling effect on how difficult it will be to ever win this global war on terror."
Congressman Steve King called Senator Joe McCarthy a “Hero for America” and called a peace and civil rights activist not “consistent of American values.”
There is a difference between the bubonic plague (the GOP) and the flu (the Democrats). The GOP has gone totally off the tracks and embraced it's inner Joe McCarthy and is almost 100% corporate controlled. The Democrats don't have wall to wall radical right wing crazies as does the GOP and the Democrats are maybe 85% corporate controlled.
Why choose Ron Paul when there is the independent, Bernie Sanders? Bernie Sanders is the gold standard and he is not controlled by corporate money. Bernie defends Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid while Ron Paul and his spawn, Rand, want to kill those social programs.
JerzyJoe,
Good statement on both of these demagogue Repub congressmen Kings.
They are a base pair, and they reveal how ugly and mean-spirited our citizens are.
I have to agree with secretarybird's post at 4:13pm; many will shake our heads in disbelief at their antics in the next congress.
Please don't speak for Ron Paul. Listen to him before you open your mouth. And remember that he was out of Congress for over a decade, working - and ran against a Tea-Bagger. They hate him. He stays in the GOP because it got taken over by crazies - we can straighten it out again, but we have to get control first. I don't think it's really possible, but I'll still support anyone who's willing to try.
I'd like a reference to the quote from Ron Paul where he advocates 'killing Social Security' - and I'll give you a reference to refute it. He just wants to get this country to where we don't need it anymore. Non-profit healthcare, for instance. I remember those days - we always paid for all our own healthcare, without any 'insurance' - and had 'county' hospitals that served the needy as well. Fascism is our enemy - not freedom.
Ron Paul is an ideologue. The day for ideology is past. All ideology depends on people doing some very prescribed things. The one thing we know for sure about people is they will always act in their own self-interest unless a society or government calls them to subvert that for the common good. Libertarians, Randians, Communists have all failed to understand that society must be governed by progressively changing rules to adjust for the constant stream of new challenges that we face. No one ideology has ever successfully endured without departing from its principles to acknowledge that fact.
Ron Paul is nothing but a fake, phony fraud when it comes to Social Security. He wants to preserve SS when pigs fly. He's a lying corporatist when it comes to SS.
Ron Paul: “When it comes to Social Security, we must understand that the system does not represent an old age pension, an “insurance” program, or even a forced savings program. It simply represents an enormous transfer payment, with younger workers paying taxes to fund benefits…”
Of course, that's how SS works, it is inter-generational. It's been working like that for over 75 years.
Ron Paul again: “My hope is that at least some members of the new Congress will cut through the distortions and see Social Security as it really is. The best way to fix the impending Social Security crisis is also the simplest: allow younger individuals to opt out of the program and use their tax savings to invest privately as they see fit. This is the true private solution. Your money has never been safe in the government’s hands, and it never will be.” Ron Paul
Spoken like a true libertarian anti-tax anti-SS ideologue. He wants to privatize SS, he wants to allow younger workers to drop out of it so that traditional SS can be destroyed. Please, don't hand me this tripe that Ron Paul wants to preserve SS. What a farking JOKE, ha ha ha ha. Libertarians think that taxes is theft and that you should just be on your own and tough luck if you didn't save a few millions for your retirement and your health care.
In 2008, Ron Paul called abortion murder.
Ron Paul's views on SS from ontheissues.org:
.Abolish Social Security, but not overnight. (Jan 2008)
Let people get out of Social Security; it’s a failure. (Jan 2008)
Never voted to spend one penny of Social Security money. (Dec 2007)
Allow young people to get out of the system. (Oct 2007)
Personal retirement accounts allow investing in one’s future. (Sep 2007)
Federal government won’t keep its entitlement promises. (Mar 2007)
Voted YES on raising 401(k) limits & making pension plans more portable. (May 2001)
Voted YES on reducing tax payments on Social Security benefits. (Jul 2000)
Voted NO on strengthening the Social Security Lockbox. (May 1999)
Create personal retirement accounts within Social Security. (Jul 2000)
Sponsored bill to put Trust Fund into market certificates. (Jan 2003)
Rated 30% by the ARA, indicating an anti-senior voting record. (Dec 2003)
Ron Paul wants to let young workers opt out of SS which means that seniors, the disabled and widows will just have to fend for themselves. Wake up folks, he's a libertarian and libertarians believe in social Darwinism and a Dickensian you're on your own world.
Ron Paul also asked how anyone who opposes abortions can support what we did in Iraq.
I am against both abortion and the death penalty.
Here is a petition to reform elections, so that Congress will obey the people not corporations: http://www.petitiononline.com/PoliTru3/petition.html
If we act together now, we can still save our country.
From the mouths of babes,
"America is not at ware with Islam."
From where I'm standing, I would beg to differ. We may not be officially at war with Muslims and Islam, but I would venture to say that well over half of our supposedly enlightened citizens believe so. Not hard to understand as from that very first day back in September of 2001 the media led by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter have been hammering that point home.
"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."
- Ann Coulter
Look at the hateful and completely media driven frenzy over the so called "Ground Zero" Mosque in lower Manhattan. Can anyone deny that this was driven solely by hate and fear of Islam and Muslims? Just take a look at what the media did to anyone in a position of power who spoke out in support of the Islamic Center.
The overwhelming majority of this country's population truly believes we are a "Christian nation". Far too many of those who think this way see any challenge to their religion, even the peaceful practice of another religion a direct threat, not only themselves, but the very fabric of society, and thus the nation. Even among many of those I know who consider themselves liberal or progressive buy into this. While it may be true that the majority population is Christian of one faith or another, that does not make the nation Christian.
What is lost on so many people is that the men who set this nation up rightfully set out to make the government secular. Too many have no concept that the 1st amendment doesn't just give one the right to practice religion but to also be free from religion.
KrazyKatz:
Eek! Ann Coulter! Few people, even Rush, have a greater capacity to make me want to scream naked in the streets. I sometimes read her just to gauge the insanity. The quote you provided is more usual than exceptional of her, her, what do I call it? Total, total, total, [writer reduced to preverbal state].
But you're right about the Islamophobia. From my experience, it seems most people are truly caught up in it, and those who aren't are minimizing its danger.

P. King is yet another example of the demagogues who practice politics as a fundamental form of capitalism that mines the vast expanse of human ignorance for power and profit. It's a low overhead venture with high return potential.
Since the main material investment required is usually from the pockets of contributors, the demagogues' only personal cost is their intellectual and spiritual integrity.
That is a zero risk investment since psychopaths, by definition, have no integrity to lose.
