President NAFTA Backs President Shafta
It was a stunning spectacle yesterday when former President Clinton took the podium from President Obama in the White House briefing room to help shove the Obama-GOP tax deal down the throats of Democratic activists and Congress members.
It was a fitting spectacle too (carried live on CNN) -- since Bill Clinton paved the way in teaching how a Democratic president can win battles through the votes NOT of his own party but the Republicans.
Remember NAFTA, the trade deal loved by big business and Republicans -- and opposed by Democratic constituencies like unions, environmentalists and consumer advocates? President Clinton passed NAFTA in 1993 with the votes of nearly 80 percent of GOP senators and almost 70 percent of House Republicans. Meanwhile, House Democrats opposed NAFTA by more than 3 to 2.
More than a year ago, I warned ("Get Ready for the Obama/GOP Alliance") that Obama would follow Clinton's lead in winning some of his biggest fights by allying with the GOP against his own base.
Following much White House lecturing and name-calling ("the professional left," "f**king retarded") aimed at the activists who put him in the Oval Office, Obama shafted his base this week and broke another promise, this time on tax breaks for the rich.
Look for another Obama/GOP alliance if Democrats in Congress find their voices over Obama's bloody, costly, unwinnable folly in Afghanistan.
These kinds of deals can become habit forming. After NAFTA, Clinton went on to other bipartisan deals -- cutting welfare for the poor while extending welfare to the media conglomerates in 1996, and concluding his tenure with deregulatory giveaways to the investment banks that led directly to the financial meltdown of 2008.
And Obama seems to have less backbone and firm principles than even Bill Clinton -- even more prone to a Stockholm syndrome-tendency to cozy up to his Republican batterers.
So it was quite a scene yesterday, with voices on CNN almost giddy that the gray ghost of pro-corporate "bipartisan compromise" was back at the White House.
Meanwhile, independent Bernie Sanders was electrifying much of the country by railing for 8 and ½ hours in the Senate against the wealthy getting billions in tax breaks while deficit-hawks take aim at Social Security and other vital programs.
I'm sure I wasn't the only American fantasizing that one day a fighting independent like Bernie would occupy the White House.
Instead, with Obama, we seem to be getting the best Republican president since . . . well . . . since Clinton.

Show AllYup, ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing kill a lot more sheep before the flock catches on. It may now be too late for most. We've been fleeced by pros.
The tax bill, like the health insurance bill - Obama is determined to shove it down the throats of Americans whether they like it or not. The question still open is whether a small number of Democrats who may be able to stop it will stop it.
Democrats clearly do not represent their base (at least the more progressive wing) and haven't for sometime. They've taken them for granted because they know that they can play the lesser evil card and win every time.
Obama's economic advisors keep pounding about how angry working families will be when they see their taxes raised on Jan. 1. It seems to me that during the midterm elections, polls showed that most Americans didn't even realize that they received an additional tax cut from Obama. IF THE BUSH TAX CUTS EXPIRED, MOST WORKING FAMILIES PROBABLY WOULDN'T EVEN NOTICE A CHANGE IN THEIR TAXES, (EXCEPT FOR THE HYPE)! Our country would be better served if the Bush Tax Cuts were allowed to expire, and resources were directed toward the unemployed, infrastructure and clean energy.
"And Obama seems to have less backbone and firm principles than even Bill Clinton -- even more prone to a Stockholm syndrome-tendency to cozy up to his Republican batterers."
The prevailing 'take' that the republican/corporatist/fascists are out to 'get' Obama, that they are his "batterers" and he is a fool for accommodating them is wrong. The analogy of Stockholm syndrome response is wrong.
Republican/corporate/fascist interests sponsored the meteoric career of O-man. He is a product of their making and was carefully selected and developed to a design that met their needs.
What they needed was a mechanism that would allow them to maintain uninterrupted continuum of control following the period of over-reach under the Cheney admin and the predictable backlash to follow.
Obama is the creation of the oligarchs. They made sure he was elected. They will continue to pull his strings as long as it benefits them. His affinity for the right is no aberration. They are his sponsor/master. He is the contemporary version of the house slave.
Obama's antagonistic response to liberals/progressives is not a mistake/aberration either. He knows we (at least those of us who are authentic) have an agenda that is in opposition to his own.
The Stockholm syndrome is not in effect in the case of the prez. The oligarchs aren't Obama's enemy. We are. His response has been completely rational.
Obamabots and their continued support of the prez despite almost 2 years of unmitigated disloyalty, lies and abuse? That might qualify as Stockholm syndrome.
The ruling elite found a winning formula in Obama. He successfully neutralized the growing left opposition to the Bush/Cheney regime while legitimating the Bush policies of unending wars, torture, illegal surveillance and detentions, ecological devastation and tax breaks for the rich. Obama has indeed been "carefully developed and designed" to fit their needs and he is performing flawlessly.
He also lends himself to the phony drama referred to in Cohen's article: Republican batterers pressuring a good, but weak President into submitting to their threats to "harm the hostages." If he had ever really stood up for any of his supposed "progressive principles", there might be a smidgen of truth in this drama, but he hasn't. He has consistently acted the part of the ineffectual liberal whose progressivism is a purely a matter of rhetorical flourish and who always acts in accordance with right-wing ideology. The purpose of this drama, which is heavily promoted in this and other liberal publications, is to foster the illusion that "Obama can be changed if only we hold his feet to the fire." Strangely, the fire never gets hot enough to get those feet moving anywhere but to more capitulations to the wealthy.

Spot on! And yet CD will still carry articles of the type "Why doesn't Obama..." and "What the Democrats should do..." and "why don't the Dems show more backbone..." etc.
These writers obviously don't get it. You do. Thanks.
"These writers obviously don't get it." Or maybe they do and just want to fool you!
iowapinko: I agree with your post. Anyone who thinks Obama stood on the side of the people -- well, they weren't really listening, and they certainly weren't paying close attention, during the campaign!
I have countless friends who fell for his rhetoric, and some of them are completely disillusioned. Other friends are still waiting to hear him say what they thought they heard him say during the campaign. And, they wait, and they wait!
Thanks for your post!
Hi Kay, I agree with Iowapinko's excellent post, as well as much of what you have to say. But I take issue with the assertion that people weren't paying attention.
I looked again at Obama's voting record. For instance, NationalJournal.com has BO rated as the MOST LIBERAL senator in 2007 based on his voting record in the US Senate on certain issues. (http://www3.nationaljournal.com/voteratings/sen/lib.htm#results )
He showed a particular talent for sidestepping crucial votes that might have given his opponents ammunition against him when he was an Illinois senator, using the "present" vote to avoid taking a committed stand.
This shows mostly how he put political victories and manipulation of perception ahead of the issues, but it is very subtle. I'm sure that this was not overlooked by his masters however, and must have been part of his/their "master plan".
I am always skeptical of people who say "I knew what a ------ Obama was!" because I think a lot of Obama haters just didn't like him because he was black. I'm certainly not saying that about YOU personally because I have read your comments many times, but I think that lots of people who might have seemed "perceptive" were really just haters. And now it seems that they were justified no matter the reason. But please don't say that this is the fault of people not listening. If they did try to do research, like I did, they would have found a somewhat nebulous record but an appearance of strong populism. People were listening, but it was all gold-plated bullshit.
Elaine,
I suppose you realize that suggesting that most Obama critics are, in fact, closet racists, is another way of diverting the discussion from the legitimate issues which his critics from the left raised BEFORE the election. Are you suggesting that critiques from the left are also a "disguise" for racism? Not that lefties can't be racist, just that their critiques should at least be examined on the merits. If you decided that "ratings" by folks such as National Journal are an adequate voters guide, what can I say? I owned two Vegas (yeah, like folks who voted for Clinton and Obama, I actually owned 2 of those cars) cute, but fundamentally flawed once you looked under the hood, and the Vega was rated as a Motor Trend Car of the Year .....
I knew the "race" issue would come up again - this is one reason, IMO, that there will be no challenge in the Dem primary to Obama ......
Auquifer thanks for your thoughtful response. Yes, I do realize it is a diversion, so I made it rather timidly as a reply to a reply. But I do wonder, truthfully, if some people's powers of observation were tinted by a reason-less hatred of Obama the black man rather than Obama the unfit political candidate. Since one was a lot easier to observe than the other. It certainly came up on the right. I don't think I'm actually suggesting that critiques from the left are a "disguise" for racism, but maybe racism, however subtle or aggressive, pushed some people down the path of dislike right off the bat regardless of the evidence. (Probably a lot of people were similarly pushed down the path of "like" as well, based partly or solely on race.) I'm sure that mathematically speaking there are a certain percentage of people on the "left" that are going to be racist. I guess I'm wondering just how big that percentage is, and then I wonder how many of them are here on CD saying "I knew he was full of shit".
You are also very right to point out that Vega was Motor Trend car of the year. I like the analogy and I appreciate your humor. And it kind of says what I was trying to say earlier: you can pay attention and still get fooled and it takes a while to find out.
Thanks for your civil discussion of a tender subject there.
And you may have a point about primary challengers, but I still predict Nancy Pelosi is positioning herself for a run and is just as much a company man as Obama. She's got the money. And the "woman" card could hold the same type of cachet as the "race" card. But she's such a party loyalist that they could talk her into waiting four years.
I get your point, elainem, although I take issue with the glib use of the term "hater".
I think that the straightforward phrase "paying attention" is more ambiguous and problematic than it seems. I know several left-oriented persons who jumped on the Obama bandwagon because they were enthralled with supporting the Historic Election of a Person of Color to the Oval Office. We were only waiting for this moment to arise!
They indeed "paid attention" to Obama's history, including his voting record, in the sense of PERCEIVING it. But they also bought into the then-popular view of Obama as a Political Master Ninja playing Eleventeen-Dimensional Chess.
This sticks in my mind because of Obama's legislative actions during the campaign; not just the major ones, like supporting the draconian revised FISA legislation, or cheerleading the Bankster Bailout, but also resolutions such as condemning MoveOn for their "Petraeus Betray Us" ad.
You are exactly right to note that dispassionate scrutiny "shows mostly how he put political victories and manipulation of perception ahead of the issues". That's the conclusion I drew, also.
But relatively intelligent, perceptive voters who'd become enthralled with Brand Obama "explained away" all of the skeptical, not to say sinister, interpretations of his actions. They always wanted to tell you that from a shrewd, savvy "inside politics" perspective, Obama's voting "present" or otherwise avoiding taking a definite stand were proofs of his genius.
They were convinced that Obama was skillfully maneuvering through a political minefield while keeping his eyes on the prize, and equally convinced that once Obama won that prize and acquired supreme political power, he would dispense with the shucking and jiving and govern with honesty and integrity.
That is, they paid attention but were dazzled by the gold-plated bullshit anyway. So it was a superficial, or minimal, kind of attention; they looked, but failed to see.
Obe, thank you for your excellent post. I always enjoy your comments. You give a very good description of the blinding glow of brand Obama.
Yes, I was glib and Auqifer already called me on that. If you care to, read my response to that post above.
I agree that many of us projected what we wanted to see onto the perfect screen that was Obama the candidate. And we filtered it through the lens of how much we hated George Bush.
One thing that sticks in my mind along with the things you mentioned was Obama's repudiation of his pastor Rev. Wright. Kicked to the curb for telling a hard truth.
I do doubt that there were very many people, even in the category of honestly seeing Obama for what he was, who could say that they knew his leadership would be this abysmal, that he would break so many promises, that he would make so many foolish choices regarding the future of the human race.
I think the people who knew what America needed and wanted, dangled it, and then jerked it out of our reach just as we thought we had almost grabbed it are some mean sonsabitches. I think Obama's one of them. So was Bill Clinton. It's like Clinton threw the ball, bounced it off the head of a ref into the hands of George Bush, who slipped and fumbled the ball to elegant tight end Obama. But they're all on the same team, moving the ball forward in the interests of corporate sovereignty. And after the game they blow up the stadium.
"I know several left-oriented persons who jumped on the Obama bandwagon because they were enthralled with supporting the Historic Election of a Person of Color to the Oval Office. We were only waiting for this moment to arise!"
In retrospect I suffered that very same color-blind-blindness, yearning for someone to rise above race and class and help to heal the deep and malingering divisions in both. In so doing I too made the same wishful rationalizations about Obama's true character. Because his core message was unmistakably egalitarian, as are his origins and race, I selectively perceived his early votes and Clintonesque parsing as part of a calibrated realpolitik strategy, crafted to bypass the corporate/AIPAC filters. Alas, it didn't take long to realize that it was MY filters he was fooling, and I have since become one pissed off chump. It's got nothing to do with race and everything to do with deceit, treachery, and violence. He is now unpardonably complicit in all of Bush's crimes and then some.
For those who think the Democratic Party can be redeemed and recover from these past two years and the certain betrayals dead ahead, you have no idea the depth of anger and hostility Obama has evoked with such stunning treachery and cavalier arrogance. The difference in degree is a difference in kind. If Obama is counting on his patrons to ensure his reelection for services rendered, he's likely in for a surprise. I would sooner hasten crash the entire rotten system than vote for such a quisling or his feckless party. And I know I'm in good company.
Doug
"I would sooner hasten crash the entire rotten system than vote for such a quisling or his feckless party".
Aw shucks, Doug. Lighten up, this is just half-time, lets finish the game, you count for something.
Good post!
for some reason, probably related to my history of Aspergers syndrome (before the term was invented), I was always able to see right through this Obama guy - his profoundly right-wing '04 keynote, his praise or Reagan, his racism-denialist Philly speech, his rejection of single payer, his Palestinian-hating letter to the US UN ambassador my posting of which led to my serial bannings here (formerly PJD, USAn, yinzer, yunzer, yunz... and others), and even an IP address block on my accessing the whole website in the final days before Nov 4.
But, whenever I brought up these issues of what Obama's actual ideology appears to be I was always told by all fine liberals everywhere: "Don't worry! He is just saying this stuff to get elected; he'll be a good progressive the instant he is sworn in!". I'd reply, facetiously (because I knew Obama was being "honest"): "So are you telling me he's lying? Why should I vote for a liar?" I never got a reply to that question.
For me, his intent to escalate the war in Afghanistan was more than enough reason for me to NOT vote for Obama. Then, I noted his FISA vote. His bankster bailout vote didn't thrill me, either. When he opted out of public financing, I had to follow the money, and follow the money, and there was plenty to follow. Despite the M$M talk about small donations, the corporate donations were pouring into his campaign, and he received something like $19 million from Wall Street. That's the short list.
You can think whatever you want about me, that's your prerogative. However, I can tell you that I would have liked to have believed in him, but in the end, I just couldn't.
IOWA: Great post. It ought to automatically pop up every time another Obama shill shows up in these threads. That would save a lot of time, and the need for redundant point by point explanations of the magnitude of the sell-out that's been perpetrated on the American citizenry, after the battering of the Bush years. Stockholm Syndrome is a more apt characterization of the populace, than its figurehead.
Obamabots and Stockholm Syndrome -- there is no doubt, unless they make above a certain income and then they are solidly behind the Obama, the diehard cultists. The ones most likely to wake up next, I would hope, often are identified in this manner: "I still support President Obama, but ..." It get it depends on how many more "buts" their psyche can tolerate before it all explodes.
"Obamabots and their continued support of the prez despite almost 2 years of unmitigated disloyalty, lies and abuse? That might qualify" as ignorance and stupidity?
Senator Sanders' filibuster was a pathetic spectacle; a decrepit, decent man from a poor state pleading truth after truth about a financially ruined nation to an empty chamber while the wheeler-dealer neoliberals like Obama and Clinton plugged ther ears and shilled for oligarchy. It was like watching the death rattle of democracy. Sick.
Sorry, the references to race don't seem so 'obvious' in the article. Can you elaborate?
One of the most vocal critics of Obama's actions (inactions) as President
is none other than Cornel West. You don't suppose he's Irish, do you?
Err... Mr. Abram,
I think "Shafta" was chosen because it rhymes with NAFTA, and Obama is quite clearly shafting us.
He is not referring the black detective character John Shaft of the 1971 blaxploitaton flick, and Issac Hayes' hit soul tune that accompanied the movie.
Feeling pretty stupid right now?
Yes, Obama is giving us the shaft, and it rhymes with NAFTA.
I had to study your remark a while before I figured you must have been actually thinking about that 40 year-old movie. What percent of USAns have even heard of it?
I think quite a number of African Americans have stopped following the judas goat.
Having grown up in slums that were mostly black/Mexican, don't believe most ever started. For 50% of voters did not go to the polls.
Glenn Ford:
Slow down pardner, "Judas Goat"?. What Americans have grown accustomed to, is an executive dominated Government. In my Civics class, the way Mr. Obama handled the Health Care Legislation was the way my 7th grade teacher drew it up on the Black Board. The President presented the grand vision and guiding principles to congress. Congress though its research and debating process crafted the legislation, the Prseident weighed in where needed and the Congress presented him with a bill to veto or sign. The process is again underway in the present tax cut bill.
Public opinion is 2-1 in favor of the Democratic Tax Bill. The House does not even have to bring the President's "framework" to the floor. So, why don't they just sit on it? Take some concrete action instead of this name calling and handwringing. How do the Democrats find themselves in such and enviable position and what are they going to do about it? Call YOUR Congressman and tell him to let it die. Mr. Sanders is a brave man, filibuster the damm thing again and again, be a junk yard dog Republican about it, fight with all your might within the framework of this Democracy, the public is with you.
Or, keep feeding the frenzy and ginning up the faithful. The far left is a mirror reflection of the far right, the crazy uncle in the family. Kin but crazy, filling out the special places.
Who cares if the tax rate for working families goes up....how many are still working anyways?
You have to have an income to tax on for it to make a difference.
Don’t forget sales taxes, which never are imposed on stocks, bonds or real estate. Also the reality that most business taxes get passed on to consumers.
OBAMA -- 26% PRESIDENT
My impoverished lower half of society, the 50% with more wealth then debt, including the 35% high school dropouts, we are the half of voters not so fool as to vote for our next set of dictators.
The 2008 election for example, only 50% of those eligible cared to vote, so Obama did not receive 52% of votes, only 26%.
With Obama's brand of rhetoric wearing thin with his base, he decided he had to employ good ole BC to reintroduce his good ole schmooze back into the process of putting lipstick on this pig of a bill (with all due respect to real pigs who, admittedly. are being unfairly maligned with this metaphor). And Clinton happily performed, almost, so I understand, having to be dragged away from the press event.
Thank you, Mr. Cohen, for making this equivalency. I said before the election ('08) that the only reason Hillary beat Obama in the primary was that he was a better Clinton than she was, and that the real battle in the primary was not about the "soul" of the party but about control of the DLC. The powers that be chose, ultimately, to back Obama then, but his veneer is wearing thin and I think Obama was told that he had to swallow his ego and bring back ole' Bill who seems to be able to do a better job at conning the base with regard to Dem. BS. We see that here on CD with a resurgence of Clinton defense and need to be reminded just how "good" a Rep. Pres. Clinton was. (And don't forget his "teaming up" with GW after Bush's Pres., as if to remind us.)
Obama is following in his footsteps, but without the staying power he had with regard to "charm" and i'm sure ole' Bill is lapping it up, both with regard to the attention (he is a consummate ham), and the satisfaction he must glean from the "recognition" that a Clinton is the "better" of the two, after all.
Is he gearing up for the reintro of Hillary in '12? The problem for the Dems is, Hillary ain't Bill, and even the promise of "2 for 1" I don't think can overcome that.
If more folks had seen through Clinton during his time, they would have been more prepared to see through Obama. If Dems fail to note and keep in mind this equivalency - that Obama is Clinton redux and that Clinton would be pursuing the same stuff if he were still in office, they will be vulnerable to an attempt by the Dem powers that be to reintroduce a Clinton like figure as the face of the party - convincing them to "return" to the good ole' days of a Clinton Pres. when "everything was just ducky."
We will know that Dems are truly becoming disaffected when even Clinton fails to deliver them back into the fold ....
And we must repeatedly point out that Sanders is no Dem and cannot be used as a poster boy for the prospects of the possibility of reforming the party from within - we don't need more Dems "like Sanders", we need more INDYS like Sanders ....
The one place where I take issue with you is where you say "And Obama seems to have less backbone and firm principles than even Bill Clinton -- even more prone to a Stockholm syndrome-tendency to cozy up to his Republican batterers."
i would say that it is not a question of "backbone", they both are equally committed to the same agenda - an agenda which, heretofore, was assoc. primarily with Reps. The difference between the two is primarily one of style - Clinton is a better schmoozer and as the inevitable results of this agenda become more apparent to folks now than they were under Clinton, they will need all the "schmooze" they can get. Cohen needs to go just a bit further and recognize that even if, at one time, the Dems were among the victims of Rep. "batterers", they have now become willing and active "batterers" themselves, batterers in victims clothing, as it were ....
"If more folks had seen through Clinton during his time, they would have been more prepared to see through Obama." -- Aquifer
Well stated! Last week, I received an e-mail from a friend of mine who -- out of the blue, BTW -- was bemoaning, poor Bill Clinton, who was surrounded by Republicans and was forced to do their bidding. She and I have gone round and round on this issue -- with me offering up a list of bills, etc., that greased the wheels for Gee Dubya. I thought she had moved past the Clinton years, and understood, but she's back in them, and in fact, she's still mired in them. "Poor Bill!!" This is an educated woman, who is married to an educated man, both of whom lost their jobs during the dot-com crisis, when that bubble burst. They have never recovered financially. She, and he, both blame Bush -- whereas, the bubble burst on Clinton's watch. They simply don't want to see the truth.
Both of them voted for Obama -- and bought into his brand completely. I thought of this couple immediately, when I read your post. I have other friends, too, who can't seem to come to grips with the Clintons, and you are right -- all of them bought into the Obama brand without much real analysis.
"He's Baaack!"
Wasn't one of Clinton's old nicknames "The Comeback kid?"
Well he sure isn't such a kid anymore but I'll be darned, he's back on the spotlight. Uppity Obama feels betrayed? His reaction: Take off the gloves and go full-fleged Clintonista. After all, the Clinton people only make up at least 50% of Obama's administration with almost the other 50% made up of Bush holdovers. Yikes! So it's really more of the "change" the Chump Changer-in-Chief has delivered all along: NONE!
PAID TO LOOSE -- 95% OF POLITICIANS WHO DO LOSE
Be above poser sincere or no -- His post is an illusion, and the effect of it is the pretense of a good knowledge that will help you decide who best to vote for. It being all bad fiction and the fairy tale that most politicians have getting reelected as their highest priority.
Reality is, with 95% of those in Congress paid actors, 95% of those who do not get reelected -- were paid quite handsomely to act in a way guaranteed to not get reelected.
"With Obama's brand of rhetoric wearing thin with his base, he decided he had to employ good ole BC to reintroduce his good ole schmooze back into the process of putting lipstick on this pig of a bill"
BC was the perfect choice for the job. He is, after all, an expert on pigs wearing lipstick.
Well put, Aquifer. It should be noted that Obama is an honorary member of the DLC. He's considered one of them (like Clinton) without formally being a part of that corporate-cash bundling cartel.
I would argue that that's all the Democratic Party is - a corporate cash aggregator that represents business interests, much like the Repug Party. The Dem Party can't, by charter, represent the people, but Dem politicians are successful with delivering warm fuzzy speeches to fool the plebs. I'm not sure why this works. I guess people who accept their spectator status just enjoy being lied too, as long as they go away with some good feelings about it.
We should also be aware that many mainstream Dem voters still like Bill and Barack, even though they've done them real harm - think NAFTA/GATT (Bill) and bankster bailout (Barack), to name a few. Truly, Bill showed himself to be a master of the dark arts in killing welfare, an extaordinary act of barbaric cruely. The coven is now gathering its dark forces again to similarly kill Social Security under Barack, as noted.

GRAB YOUR SHOVELS -- BY THE NUMBERS
With 95% of Congress paid actors, what will happen now that the Republican Theater Guild has center stage in the House?
Well, the rich have already hand picked and campaign funded a Republican to next occupy the White House. Actually like Obama, for a full five years much media thought control is devoted to groom the President of their choice.
So, the next six years will be all about reinforcing the anxiety driven and fearful submission to authority needed to convert our 40% educated middle-class into the most over-educated minimum wage class the world has ever known.
And when it comes to competing with the uneducated laboring class in China, speed of inspecting things, packing things, loading and unloading trucks and things, if you think that all our high school and college sports programs do not tone up and perfect manual dexterity -- think again.
Republicans were supposedly the problem
Democrats were supposedly the answer
Both are corrupt to the core.
The only solution is Revolution!
Lock arms with your Republican neighbor to join forces in the fight to gain our Republic back from the ruling elite and the corporations who have destroyed our country and are stealing our future!
See you in the streets!
Revolution tends to be a constant question and possibility in the face of tremendous injustice, Mark. I wouldn't downplay it, but rather hope for its potential to flower, given our present circumstances. However, you don't have to worry about the American people being suddenly moved to revolt, even by Ma77thew's short but rousing call.
Dem voters tend to be channeled into tepid corporate waters, especially through the two-party system. Your conventional proposal about winning loyal Democratic voters seems to overlook the fact that most of those voters have no idea that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark." They continue to vote for the same corporate party again and again, even though the Dem Party does not represent their interests (nor does the Repug Party).
One aim of the American republic, born itself of revolution organized by landed gentry against the British crown, was to make future revolts unnecessary. Mostly, it was a military pact againt the king, but it included vague mechanisms that could make it seem as if the public voice was being addressed, while ensuring elite control. Some things, like the vote being assigned only to propertied men, were too transparent, so things like that were loosened up and changed. But control over the popular mind was ensured through a fragmented representative system, such as the bicameral Congress. As an insurance policy, the Supreme Court has veto over all laws, according to the will of unelected judges.
The duopoly of Dem-Repug control has emerged as one way to ensure elite and corporate control. Its casino-like charms continue to beguile and sap the energies of people with good will. Under this system, candidates with the most money tend to win - and that suggests that grassroots support is less necessary than corporate cash to succeed, which is rather astounding. If you got a Democrat elected in the way you suggest (if that's what you want), would that person not capitulate on the important issues down the road, while making great-sounding speeches in the mean time? I think so, and it's because the Dem Party is a corporate-funded party. Reelection takes corporate cash.
So, you need to be specific about your proposal. Grassroots support of candidates has to happen outside the Dem/Repug Party framework. It's worthy to put the effort in there, but know that this two-party duoploy system is geared to exclude such participation, and the money involved in elections tends to drownd out or even exclude the grassroots voice.
So, while election efforts on behalf of third parties are worth a stab, you probably can't ask people who work to survive to put 100 percent more of their lives toward working to promote a candidate against these odds.
The really important work is getting people's minds at the point in which winning elections is easy. That comes first. Whether that mindset will lead to electoral change or revolution is difficult to say. The fact that we don't have change of any sort signifies that people just don't get how bad things are, with more oppression to come. Maybe physical depravatoin has to hit them first. I'm not sure I really understand it.
I say cultivate your minds first. When we're ready to revolt, we'll be there. But I dare say, backing Dem candidates is just a backward-thinking idea. Let's not go there. It doesn't work and it wastes time and energies.

Mark, I'm not convincing you, so I offer one simple idea: follow the money. Look for the example you seek and ask yourself if it ever happened in the Dem Party. Then, when you don't find it, ask yourself why it didn't happen. The money trail is your first clue. Good luck with your organizing efforts within the Dem Party!

Hmmm, folks organized to get Kucinich elected and re-elected and got what? Some fine speeches and the ultimate cave. Any Dem who manages to get in is squashed, one way or another, if he threatens the status quo in the Party .....
Bernie versus Clinton!
I suppose that the two were on the same event lineup ticket(if not stage) is a victory for Bernie.
"It was a stunning spectacle yesterday.."
It was "stunningly" SAD. The man couldn't even sell and explain his own deal. Then let Mr. NAFTA upstage him. Then he runs off to Mama & his top priority: a party. Too bad it wasn't his going away party.
Incredibly weak.
Whether he decides not to run, or is simply thrashed in the next election, the man is toast. Personally, I still think he's gonna take a dive and elect to stay home with Mama.
Now is the time to start the momentum for a third-party run. Nader and some well chosen folks should start the ball rolling. Moyers should step up and join the movement. Sanders and others (I'm sure others will have other ideas) -if they truly care about the nation- should put up or shut up.
SPLIT the party, or LEAVE the party. Now is the time to decide.
If O plays his cards right, he too can join the oligarch class and get blow jobs.
Dear Duncan and Obama:
I am wondering about that stuff you all say about education and how we have to compete in the 21st century. How can we compete if Congress and both those political parties seem to lack any knowledge of economics, U.S. and world history, the Constitution, and even how the real world works?
You do know, Arnie and Barak, don't you, that ancient China started the civil service system to insure that those in government knew what they were doing.
They also understood human nature enough to know that many would try to cheat the system. To solve this, they had the test takers write out their answers to questions, and then a second set of writers would rewrite the same answers, but in a different hand, so that the answers were made important and not the recognition of a tester's handwriting. This ancient kingdom did everything it could to insure fairness.
It seems counter productive to tell the children of the nation that education is so very important, when so many in congress seem to lack knowledge, and certainly empathy and "common sense.".
I would like to propose that before being elected to Congress and other high government positions ( including the military) that potential leaders have to show that they actually know something. A kind of high stakes EXIT exam which shows more than hyperbole and name calling.
We would have to impriove on the ancient China system, but we really need those running for office to show competency in those areas that are necessary for the nation to continue on and prosper.
It would be wonderful, if instead of campaign promises, that candidate had to show basic competency in all areas of life. If someone doesn't understand basic economics and even cause and effect, then that person really shouldn't be on an economics committee.
It wouldn be even more wonderful if when these people campaign on TV that journalists asked them real questions about the Constitution, history economics, law etc. No, I'm not looking for philosopher kings ( or queens) but a demonstration that each candidate has a real grasp of reality and even basic general knowledge.
You really need to consider this NOW, Arnie and Barak, because I can see the FUTURE from my front door, and it is neither bright nor promising.
I hope you realize that if your suggestion is adopted, Washington will become a ghost town.
