From Jefferson to Assange
All you need to know about Julian Assange’s value as a crusading journalist is that The New York Times and most of the world’s other leading newspapers have led daily with important news stories based on his WikiLeaks releases. All you need to know about the collapse of traditional support for the constitutional protection of a free press is that Dianne Feinstein, the centrist Democrat who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, has called for Assange “to be vigorously prosecuted for espionage.”
Writing in The Wall Street Journal, Feinstein, who strongly supported the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, has the audacity to call for the imprisonment of the man who, more than any other individual, has allowed the public to learn the truth about those disastrous imperial adventures—facts long known to Feinstein as head of the Intelligence Committee but never shared with the public she claims to represent.
Feinstein represents precisely the government that Thomas Jefferson had in mind when he said, in defense of unfettered freedom of the press, “[W]ere it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”
In the 1787 letter in which he wrote those words, Jefferson was reflecting the deep wisdom of a political leader who often had been excoriated by a vicious press that would make the anarchist-inflected comments of an Assange seem mild in comparison. More than 35 years later, after having suffered many more vitriolic press attacks, Jefferson reiterated his belief in a free press, in all its vagaries, as the foundation of a democracy. In an 1823 letter to Lafayette, Jefferson warned: “The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted to be freely expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure.”
It is precisely that agitation that so alarms Feinstein, for the inconvenient truths she has concealed in her Senate role would have indeed shocked many of those who voted for her. She knew in real time that Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attack, yet she voted to send young Americans to kill and be killed based on what she knew to be lies. It is her duplicity, along with the leaders of both political parties, that now stands exposed by the WikiLeaks documents.
That is why U.S. governmental leaders will now employ the massive power of the state to discredit and destroy Assange, who dared let the public in on the depths of official deceit—a deceit that they hide behind in making their claims of protecting national security. Claims mocked by released cables that show that our puppets in Iraq and Afghanistan are deeply corrupt and anti-democratic, and that al-Qaida continues to find its base of support not in those countries but rather in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, the very nations we arm and protect. The notion that the official tissue of lies enhances our security is rejected by the growing strength of radical Islam in the region, as evidenced by the success of Iran, the main benefactor of our invasion of Iraq, as the leaked cables make clear.
The pretend patriots who use the national security argument to gut what remains of our most important security asset—our constitutional guarantees of a truly free press—are just what President George Washington feared when in his farewell address he warned “against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the Impostures of pretended patriotism. …”
The pretended patriotism of Feinstein, the first Democrat to co-sponsor the bill extending the U.S. Patriot Act, represents the death of the Democratic Party as a protector of our freedoms. As a California resident, I will not vote for her again, no matter how dastardly a right-wing Republican opponent she might face. There is no lesser evil to be found in one who would so cavalierly imprison practitioners of a free press.
That is the issue here, pure and simple. It is unconscionable to target Assange for publishing documents on the Internet that mainstream media outlets have attested had legitimate news value. As in the historic case in which Daniel Ellsberg gave The New York Times the Pentagon Papers exposé of the official lies justifying the Vietnam War, Assange is acting as the reporter here, and thus his activities must be shielded by the First Amendment’s guarantee of journalistic freedom.
Actually Ellsberg’s position, as morally strong as it was, was weaker than that of Assange, in that the former Marine and top Pentagon adviser was working at the government-funded Rand Corp., where he had agreed to rules about the handling of classified information, including the Pentagon Papers. Assange operates under no such restraints and is an even clearer example of the journalist who ferrets out news and attempts to report it. He had no special clearance that provided him access, and what he did was no different from what the editors of The New York Times did in publishing news that was fit to print.
It is outrageous for any journalist, or respecter of what every American president has claimed is our inalienable, God-given right to a free press, not to join in Assange’s defense on this issue, as distinct from what increasingly appear to be trumped-up charges that led to his voluntary arrest on Tuesday in London in a case involving his personal behavior. Abandon Assange and you abandon the bedrock of our republic: the public’s right to know.

Show AllThe diplomacy that the critics of the Wikileaks say is so compromised has been failing for years. That failed diplomacy has been facilitated by the press and Congress not doing their jobs of criticism and oversight. Wikileaks has exposed these failings , and thus the over the top condemnation of Julian Assange. Truth hurts, and those complicit are thrashing to deflect their responsibility. It is outrageous but not unexpected. Defend Wikileaks, and thanks to all who made their work possible!
And nobody in Congress is more complicit than Feinstein.
Wow. Here is something I am old enough to realize.
This is not a Truthdig article. It is an article from Ramparts magazine which - before Julian Assange was born - was partly a forerunner of the mission of Wikileaks.
The superb journalism of Robert Scheer at Ramparts exposed perfidy, calumny, and criminal responsibility for the Vietnam War, long before the desperate whistleblowing of Daniel Ellsberg supported or proved Ramparts' allegations. Naturally, Ramparts magazine was short lived. It was stepped upon and killed, like a bug under the squashing-foot that introduces Monty Python.
Robert Scheer was one of the forces that steered my helm towards Canada, and thus to keep my eye on the North Star of humanism and application of Golden Rule to human affairs. =For an ol' man is awaitin' for to carry you to freedom; Follow the Drinkin' Gourd.=
Of all endorphins that circulate through the body, the most dangerous is corruption by power, hence Dr. Kissinger is right: power is an aphrodisiac. World wide, those people who are hounding Julian Assange to hell, can be observed to pause, clench and unclench their palms at 7/10 second intervals, and scream while veins stand out upon their necks. Get pictures of them for academic Sexology as well as for world History.

Excellent, Robert Scheer. The bellowing, vicious attacks on Assange by the corporate press, pundits, and politicians sound like grim echos of the "two minutes hate" in 1984. We do indeed seem to be descending into that nightmare dystopia of endless wars, repression and incessant propaganda to hide the truth. And anyone like the Wikileaks crew who dares to speak or uncover truth is attacked with the full force of the system's power.
"The bellowing, vicious attacks on Assange by the corporate press, pundits, and politicians sound like grim echos of the "two minutes hate" in 1984. We do indeed seem to be descending into that nightmare dystopia of endless wars, repression and incessant propaganda to hide the truth."
Descending? You mean we aren't there yet? I will try to hold onto that little sliver of hope.
AMEN, brother Scheer, you said it all and you said it so clearly. Thank you.
Of course, Fienstien opposses the disemination of the Wiki documents. After all, her husband is getting filthy rich through the military industrail complexe via weapons sales to insure perpetual world wide conflict continues. Diane will spread her legs wide for war hegemony every time. Her role in the marriage is provide weak human rights legislation (if not undermine it), and propogate military domination over the rule of law.
Maybe a recall is in order.....
Why wait?
Diane Feinstein's husband is an arms merchant that profits directly from the wars that his neocon wife supports and I'm always amazed that people never discuss this obvious conflict of interest. The democratic party is filled with neocon warmongers like Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer and his band of fellow zionists as well as opportunists who have become rich taking money from defense contractors. That is why there has been bipartisan support for the overseas empire ever since I can remember.
As I understand it, Assange is not a US citizen and seems to be operating physically outside the jurisdiction of the USA. Under these circumstances how do US laws about US secrets apply to him? I don't think you can be prosecuted for treason by a country you are not a citizen of. Is espionage an international crime and can it be deemed espionage if it is not at the behest of a foriegn govenment? And why is Karl Rove running around free?
Inquiring minds want to know!
As far as the illicit sex charges in sweden, they sound so trumped up that the swedish government's initial reaction was to let the whole thing go as not worth investigation but then rolled over after some back channel pressure. Looks like a tool to keep the guy nailed down.
Those accusing Assange of treason misspoke. No doubt a clear illustration of their megalomania from drinking the neo-con kool-aid. Leave it to that cynical protofascist Newt Gingrich to quickly label Assange an "enemy combatant." A clear invocation of Orwellian language so assiduously manipulated by the far right during and after Bush/Cheney's dark years of treason of American civil liberties. Which is why Assange is understandably worried about the U.S. government's rhetoric of revenge, including calls for his assassination. Not just Assange should worry but us all as well. The fear-mongering militants are in control and the current occupant in the White House reveals himself to be more and more of a pushover with the passing of each day.
And the Senators want to kill the 1st Amendment
http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-valley/technology/131885-senators-unveil-anti-wikileaks-legislation
I'm sure that the bill will ensure prosecution of the gentlemen who outed Plame.
I agree entirely with Robert Scheer, and appreciate the references back to the writings of Thomas Jefferson. A government without a free press (and a free flow of information about political decision making) is indeed worse than having a free press and no government (although the local factional warlordism that would replace government would not be a pretty picture either, according to Locke, Hobbes, and other thinkers who helped shape Jefferson's views).
Tucked away inside this column is a snippet that I would like to have clarified. Senator Feinstein, as head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, "knew in real time that Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attack, yet she voted to send young Americans to kill and be killed based upon what she knew to be lies."
Mr. Scheer seems very emphatic about this. What is the basis for believing that the Bush White House through the CIA ever briefed Diane Feinstein in a timely manner about the absence of a cooperative connection between Saddam Hussein's regime and Al Qaeda?
Along with the bogus, fixed WMD intelligence, this lie about Saddam in cahoots with Osama was a critical propaganda linkage in the run up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. When did the Bushies confide to Feinstein and the Senate Intelligence Committee Dems that Dick Cheney was lying on national television, and that Secretary of State Colin Powell was lying to the UN Security Council as George Tenet sat glowering in the background?
Source, and real time time line, please.....
Bill from Saginaw
All the in depth prewar investigation made it obvious that Bush was lying about everything.
Can anyone relate a truth told by Bush. ( Yes , one and only one the Dalai Lamas gold medal).
"All you need to know about Julian Assange’s value as a crusading journalist is that The New York Times and most of the world’s other leading newspapers have led daily with important news stories based on his WikiLeaks releases."
You're right, Mr. Scheer.
That's all I need to know to retain my skepticism.
Well, golly gee, if the NEW YORK TIMES is printing it, it must be worthwhile and valid.
Automatically.
Paging Judith Miller to the white PROPAGANDA phone...
Also:
"It is her duplicity, along with the leaders of both political parties, that now stands exposed by the WikiLeaks documents."
This duplicity was long exposed before Wikileaks so forgive me for not being as excited as Mr. Scheer seems to be.
Please, Mr. Scheer, allow a psychologically battered American populous the chance to wait and see the true fallout of all of these events as they continue to come to light before we start whipping out references to the Founding Fathers.
Couldn't it be that the overtly suppressive tactics being used by Liebermann and others is the ONLY real story here?
That by giving credence to the story that the Wikileaks info is SO IMPORTANT that our leaders feel need the to begin overt Internet censorship, is only playing into the hands of our oppressors?
Look, even Robert Scheer says the information is of the utmost importance - not just us rightwing lunatics - therefore we all are in agreement that something MUST be done, right?
Hopefully some information will be released that shakes the very foundations of our country.
But by stating that info that only corroborates what we have already known is somehow worthy of all of the attention we and our government are expending seems a bit odd to me personally.
Again, I hope I'm proven wrong.
But discerning truth is not a race.
And it's certainly not a popularity contest.
"That by giving credence to the story that the Wikileaks info is SO IMPORTANT that our leaders feel need the to begin overt Internet censorship, is only playing into the hands of our oppressors?"
Anything We the People do to stand up to the Powers that Be will be marginalized, discredited, and will play into the hands of our oppressors. Our oppressors know how to rip the rug out from underneath any people's movement. They also know how to weave the very rug that can do it.
It's good to maintain a healthy skepticism.
That said: Long live Heyduke!
Have you not noticed that the Fascist Mantra is the contradictory contention that both:
1) Assange has blood on his hands and is generally causing havoc.
and majically simultaneously:
2) There is as (polycarp also maintains) nothing new?
So after chasing my posts over two threads in rebuttal to my somehow "fascist" belief in skepticism, Glenn Ford, I thought we'd do a little scoreboard because I really don't seem to understand if you think I'm a fascist/part of the MIC or not.
Let's see. As of right now, who has benefited the most from the Wikileaks phenomenon?
Has the US government succesfully instituted the practice of Internet censorship?
Yes.
Has it set a precedent for coercing private companies to join in this endeavor?
Yes.
Has Wikileaks created an environment for the passing of laws for further censoring of the Internet?
Yes.
Have they begun a campaign of retaliation against people even reading Wikileaks?
Yes.
So all of this for what?
Now we know - in "black and white" if you will - that our leadership lied(s) about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
We know our government does business with dictators.
We know our leaders speak badly of other countries at times.
We know that our government wants a war with Iran
We know that our government spies on "friends".
In fact, Glenn, go to the Guardian's daily summary of the info revealed here:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8183356/WikiLeaks-summary-Monday-December-6.html
and show us what has yet come to light that warrants the over-reaction we are seeing on behalf of our government and the press? Please do.
And now tell us, who seems like they're getting the better end of the deal?
The people who are now actively engaging in the shutting down of the Internet or the newly "informed" among us?
The Liebermanns of the world who - after stating that they wanted to create an Internet "kill switch" 3 months ago - now have a reason to dust off already written bills a la the PATRIOT act and push for even greater sanctions or the people because now we have CONCRETE proof - again, as if our leaders even care or are scared anymore - of our government's wrongdoing?
Please entertain the radical idea that I simply am trying to keep a level head in assessing a situation that in less than a week has turned into "THE GREATEST BATTLE FOR THE SOUL OF MANKIND EVER!!!!"( /frothing at mouth)
As I've said in all my posts, I hope some earth-shattering info is revealed.
I really do.
But let's just say that nothing more important comes out.
Nothing more important than that which has already been released.
What then?
Well, the precedents and practices - maybe even laws - of censorship will still be in place for the NEXT time some one wants to reveal something.
You know, Glenn, like when maybe something REALLY and TRULY important needs to be revealed by someone.
You know, something earth-shattering.
And due to our experience with Wikileaks and its consequences it won't happen.
Wouldn't it suck to see that by getting all hepped up, we were in actuality slitting our own throats by assisting in creating an environment which is helping destroy the very thing we appear to be defending? (Don't get me started on how fiendishly clever THAT would be, huh?)
So, again, I hope that something comes of all of this.
Because if it whimpers out and the fascists only have a stronger hold on us because of Mr. Assange and a bunch of corroborations, then we all really lose.
Now, is what I just said Fascist? Or is it MIMC?
Or should I feel bad because I'm not "part of the solution"?
If I had the gumption, I could turn around and say that I think that you doth cheerlead too much.
But I'm all out of gumption.
All I have left is my distrust.
a mere thought of Feinstein and Schummer makes me gag.
i'd rather have King (that republican idiot from NY) any day. at least King speaks his mind. he is a true believer of zionism, with no apology or mask.
In my mind's eye I see this event- the Wikileaks controversy and the political persecution of Assange- as visually pivotal, as if it is like the knife-edge in a scale balance; and the future, not just of our country but of the world, is teetering on that thin edge. We are waiting to see which side the scale will tip.
"As a California resident, I will not vote for her again..."
Why would you have ever voted for the Wicked Witch of the North in the first place? This woman authored "counter terrorism" laws in the late 90s that essentially created thought crimes.
She created a law that she says, "a law I authored mandating up to 20 years in prison for anyone who distributes bombmaking information knowing or intending that the information will be used for a violent federal crime."
Sherman Austin, a young anarchist, was setup and framed by the FBI under this law. What did he do? He posted a LINK to a website that had instructions on how to make a molotov cocktail! They argued that he intended to use one, which there was not a shred of proof that he did. He spent a year in federal prison because he had to plea, or face 20 year enhancement charge!
She also authored the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act which is the most insane Orwellian law that goes after animal rights people, at the service of industry.
Straight up, Feinstein is a Nazi.
In addition to Gingrich and Feinstein ranting about Wikileaks, Joe Lieberman seems to thing that the Justice Department should investigate the Times for printing stories about the cables.
Of course, if Lieberman did not make occasional asinine statement like that, no one would know he was still alive, much less in the Senate.
This was a good essay until I read this:
"The notion that the official tissue of lies enhances our security is rejected by the growing strength of radical Islam in the region, as evidenced by the success of Iran, the main benefactor of our invasion of Iraq, as the leaked cables make clear."
The Islam of Shi'ite Iran is NOT even close to the extremely radical twisted "Sunni" Islam of Saudi Arabia--Wahhabism: The Islam that fuels al-Qaeda and Talibanism. So it is quite wrong to applaud Sheer as some Liberal knight as he perpetuates 30+ year-old propaganda of the very sort that supports Feinstein's family income.
peacekeepertwo : Supporting supporters of Al-Qaida is good for business, the War Business that is. The Military Industrial Complex has all the Money for Campaign Financing. Everything is Financed by IOU's from the American Taxpayer. What goes around Comes around, just not to us.
..
What is scaring Feinstein, Bush, Cheney, and the NeoCons Gang?????
What is the Big Cover-up ??????????????
Why isn't Feinstein and her crowd demanding public hearings concerning the revealed war crimes and the corrupt wrong-doings of U.S. Officials ???????????
Next Election, let's dump this old witch !!!!!!!!!!
PS,,,,WikiLeaks deserves a Nobel Peace Prize !!!!!!!!!!

Jullian is a champion of free speech. People who oppose him are enemies of free speech, openness and freedom. Let the chips fall where they may. Time to stop the criminals destroying liberty.
Julian certainly appears to be a champion of free speech, and perhaps you are correct, that he indeed it everything he appears to be. Even I, as skeptical as I am, find myself seduced by his message. His recent post yesterday was moving an brilliant. I really do want to believe in the guy and call him a hero.
On the other hand, the very evil forces that you opppose and who oppose you, who were looking for just the excuse to clamp down on the very free speech that you defend, and to censor the internet all in the name of national security, have now been given the perfect gift of the excuse to to just that.
Now why would you not suspect that these same forces possibly might have had a hand in creating this very situation to give them just that excuse?
Is that possible?
Well one would have to really carefully take a hard look at what has been actually released. Who does it hurt, who's agenda does it actually help? What's the reverse psychology in what the leaks actually reveal? How will this information be used? Who does not seem to be getting hurt in all of this? Has the most damaging information actually been revealed at least to some degree in the past already? Is it really new? Do all of the stories being told have the ring of truth to them. Are their elements that are implausible?
There are many people whom I deeply respect who think that julian Assange and WikiLeaks are indeed the real deal and their are many people who I deeply respect who smell a very big and stinky rat and make many good points that cast much doubt.
Who is right? I'm not sure.
To blindly assume that everything here is on the up and up, ignores evidence that that possibly might not be the case.
I am still undecided and getting pulled in two very opposite directions.
Here is a little template for enlightenment.
1) If the MIMC says it then you know it's a lie.
2) If the MICM crys foul then you know its fair
3) If the MIMC says its good for you then its bad for you.
4) If the MIMC states a reason then you know that is not the reason.
What the hell is the MIMC ???
MIC is of course the Military Industrial Complex.
So I looked back into your past posts and you use that acronym once before from what I wan see with no expalantion to what it means. I assume its Media something or other...
So I googled it:
Acronym Definition
MIMC Massachusetts Interactive Media Council
MIMC Manitoba International Marketing Competition (Manitoba, Canada)
MIMC Mobile Infirmary Medical Center
MIMC Mercury IMC Ltd (hazardous areas security access devices)
MIMC Metal Insulator Metal Capacitor
MIMC Member Inner Magic Circle
MIMC Miller Internet Marketing Corporation
MIMC Master Interactive Metronome Certified
Dude....I have no idea what MIMC is.....
MIMC--Military Industrial Media Complex
I prefer to call it the Propaganda System. It ofetn works in tandem with the Indoctrination System.
If only the Libertarians understood their economy ought to be cooperative instead of competative......... Sigh.......
There are so many What Ifs.
I wonder what percentage of the populace could articulate a coherent political philosophy, describe the necessary institutions, and provide a hypothetical vision of how the resulting government would function. And critically, how does it fit within Nature's construct. For the physics of Nature will alter human behavior in response to how human behavior has altered Nature. And Nature cannot be bribed.
I thought that is what it could mean. I don't necessarily agree whith the statement above. There are a great deal of truthful information reported in the mainstream media, even the US mainstream media, but it's mixed up with a great deal of propaganda and disinfo.
The media almost never takes what it reports and organizes it into anything to allow you to see the bigger picture and which then exposes the contradictions of what has been reported. If the MIMC (as you call it) has reported cotradictory accounts in different places at different times, well they both cannot be true, they both can be false, but it's possible one of them is true.
A prime example of stitching all the main stream media reports together into something that is usable would be History Commons
http://www.historycommons.org/project.jsp?project=911_project
To just dismiss everything reported is silly. Remember, liers have to remember all their lies, otherwise the trip themselves up.............and they do, all the time.
History Commons lets you see all the corroborations and all the contradictions of what you are being told. You can then correlate the Main Stream Media reports with the alternative and foreign media reports to get a better picture of what is really going on.
In the end it's up to you to decide what to believe. And that applies to WikiLeaks. These leaks will be analyzed for years. Even if WikiLeaks is a set up, I have no doubt much of what is being leaked is true. It's all the Bullsh-t mixed in that concerns me>
Orwell, whichever way you read it, Julian Assange is the only window of opportunity you've got. If they're going to clamp down on the internet because the children didn't play nice, that's exactly what they'll do. If you try to argue it's a government set-up you'll find yourself sidelined along with the folks who are still arguing about 911. In the meantime, the government will have persuaded the nice moral majority as to what a threat the open internet is with all those terrorists lurking about. NOTHING so far has stopped the momentum of a murderous American government that is unabashedly greedy and corrupt and without shame or conscience UNTIL NOW just maybe . . .
The fact is there is reason to suspect that WikiLeaks is indeed just that.
Is that in fact the case? I'm not really sure. I said there is reason to suspect.
The question of being sidelined is another discussion entirely. Are "the folks who are still arguing about 911" sidelined? We'll buildingwhat.org is about to commission a new poll and I'm sure it will find half the American people suspect there is something wrong with the official story of 9/11 and WTC7 in particular. Most polls since 2004 have found shockingly high percentages of deep suspicion. Not bad for a momement that is "sidelined". Recently even Two FOX News hosts including Geraldo have questioned the collapse of WTC7. They have been subjected to much ridicule as to be expected.
WikiLeaks is all over the news, but AE911truth.org which has 1386 verified architectural and engineering professionals who have signed the petition demanding of Congress a truly independent investigation are not mentioned hardly anywhere, not even to ridicule them. http://www.ae911truth.org/
What does that tell you? It should be telling you that this is a much bigger threat than WikiLeaks.
A very big recent exception was Geraldo who recently punctured that wall the other day on Fox News no less...with an interview that was surprisingly not hostile at all. Then Geraldo Rivera appeared on Judge Napolitano’s Freedom Watch on November 19, 2010 and what asked about his interview of one of the family members and a representative of ae911truth.org, and he was again surprisingly supportive. Geraldo had been one of the must vocal critics of the 911truth movement, now he has done a complete 180 and has stuck his neck far out and has been getting a great deal of sh-t for doing so. Both clips are here:
http://buildingwhat.org/buildingwhat-appears-on-geraldo-at-large-on-fox-news/
The following week, FOX News host Judge Napolitano courageously voiced his own opinions on this matter backing up the ae911truth postion on WTC7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP8IuDZCWug
Not bad for a sidelined movement that is up against very steep odds if you ask me.
A government that would carry out a flase flag attack is a government that would carry out a media false flag attack, allow itself to take a big hit so it can then react.
If that is indeed the case it is well meaning people such as yourself who will be sand-bagged in the end. I mean, you voted for Obama...what did you actually get?
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
hey, nellemason!
you say:
~ If you try to argue it's a government set-up you'll find yourself sidelined along with the folks who are still arguing about 911. ~
sidelined...excellent word choice...
why are individuals sidelined who are only expressing a desire for an investigation into the most important event of the modern era, an event which, while ripe with contradiction and predetermination, was never investigated with any fortitude, and which was, successively, used as an excuse for the ongoing, undeniable horrors in multiple middle eastern countries that have followed?
therein lies one key to our upcoming demise...
that assange will not address this single, primary issue utterly destroys his alleged position...
Good post
Assange, as seductive a messenger as I myself find him to be....never the less still stated:
“I’m constantly annoyed that people are distracted by false conspiracies such as 9/11, when all around we provide evidence of real conspiracies, for war or mass financial fraud.”
I'm sorry, this is very BIG RED FLAG. Of course it is still possible that he could be very brilliant, knowlegeable and astute regarding all manner of official criminality EXCEPT 9/11 where he is an completely ignorant dumb schmuck.
http://www.infowars.com/wikileaks-founder-julian-assange-is-annoyed-by-911-truth/
So dubet, if I read your post correctly, you are saying that because WikiLeaks does not address 911, it is irrelevant. The world revolves on that?
A decade old event, 911, is neither the "single" nor the "primary" issue.
Heck, I still want to know who killed John Kennedy -- and on the one hand, I'm jocking, and on the other hand, I'm dead serious. This is all interconnected.
Yes it is interconnected. And so is the assasination of Bobby Kennedy, MLK jr., Watergate, Iran Contra (This is a big one)...........all interconnected.
9/11 is by no means the only issue but it is still the lowest card of the current deck. Pull that card out and the whole house of cards comes down.
Right now nearly 1400 Architects and Engineers have presented the Scientific Forensic Evidence that the official explanation of the collapse of all three WTC skyscrappers especially WTC7 is false.
You know, the laws of Issac Newton, motion and gravity don't cease to exist because you don't want to look at them or because we are talking about 9/11.
The laws of physics are the laws of physics.
This is the lowest card in the deck right now...........go pull it out.
AE911TRUTH.ORG
I am Julian Assange.
I hope others will join in and make a difference in what would be a small way, if done individually, but which can be huge, when done en masse.
That is, make a small donation or, if you are technologically gifted, host a mirror site.
I imagine they will demand a list of all who do either, but if enough of us do it, it won't be possible to retaliate against all of us.
Orwell, so by arguing WikiLeaks is a government set-up, it gives you permission to do nothing, does it not? As far as 911, like you I am deeply suspicious, however there is no political currency there to effect change. Lots of talk, but no change, and we need change now!
I argree with Audre Lorde that "you cannot use the master's tools to dismantle the master's house," but sometimes that's all we've got, and at least we don't go down without a fight, and maybe a fight that at least takes some of that house down with us. This is a fight that the world is willing to take on!
I did not vote for Obama. I am not American, however I live under a northern Republican wannabe.
The planet and the people cannot wait any longer.
"The planet and the people cannot wait any longer."
This statement has been used every year since at least the 60s.
So, NOW, RIGHT NOW, is the FINAL BATTLE for the world, huh?
Excuse me if I believe this "fight" to be a war and not a battle.
A war that might take decade upon decade upon decade to truly win.
A war in which we've been getting our asses kicked for AT LEAST 30 years.
Why should people think this way?
So, inevitably, when this LATEST hope fades away or is crushed before my eyes we don't think, well that's it then, huh?
Time to call it quits which many would if they truly believed THIS WAS the last battle.
What do you think was much of the "psychological" point of a day like 911?
To psychologically immobilize certain segments of the populations.
To engender a thirst for vengeance in others.
What was the point of Obama's campaign?
To engender hope.
Both events successfully manipulated many people's emotions.
Here we have Wikileaks occurring right as Europe and the western world are poised on entering a new "austere" time period - one which promises social unrest - and a perfect reason for helping contain that unrest comes along.
No one's saying don't do anything, but PREPARE your minds for the potential shock of defeat and/or betrayal as they have happened amply in the past.
This is not a sprint. Question everything.
This war is bigger than a two week media cycle.
This war is against the richest and most powerful people on the planet so we'd best keep our wits about us.
polycarpe....................man your good!
What is happening now has been happening since the beginning of time (in many respects.........although there are some game changers, peak oil etc.)
Orwell laid it out in 1984:
Chapter I
Ignorance is Strength
Throughout recorded time, and probably since the end of the Neolithic Age, there have been three kinds of people in the world, the High, the Middle, and the Low. They have been subdivided in many ways, they have borne countless different names, and their relative numbers, as well as their attitude towards one another, have varied from age to age: but the essential structure of society has never altered. Even after enormous upheavals and seemingly irrevocable changes, the same pattern has always reasserted itself, just as a gyroscope will always return to equilibrium, however far it is pushed one way or the other.
The aims of these three groups are entirely irreconcilable. The aim of the High is to remain where they are. The aim of the Middle is to change places with the High. The aim of the Low, when they have an aim -- for it is an abiding characteristic of the Low that they are too much crushed by drudgery to be more than intermittently conscious of anything outside their daily lives -- is to abolish all distinctions and create a society in which all men shall be equal. Thus throughout history a struggle which is the same in its main outlines recurs over and over again. For long periods the High seem to be securely in power, but sooner or later there always comes a moment when they lose either their belief in themselves or their capacity to govern efficiently, or both. They are then overthrown by the Middle, who enlist the Low on their side by pretending to them that they are fighting for liberty and justice. As soon as they have reached their objective, the Middle thrust the Low back into their old position of servitude, and themselves become the High. Presently a new Middle group splits off from one of the other groups, or from both of them, and the struggle begins over again. Of the three groups, only the Low are never even temporarily successful in achieving their aims. It would be an exaggeration to say that throughout history there has been no progress of a material kind. Even today, in a period of decline, the average human being is physically better off than he was a few centuries ago. But no advance in wealth, no softening of manners, no reform or revolution has ever brought human equality a millimetre nearer. From the point of view of the Low, no historic change has ever meant much more than a change in the name of their masters.
Are you a climate change denier?
Rome is burning, Nero.
And I'll take full responsibility for my own mind as far as preparing "for the potential shock of defeat and/or betrayal as they have happened amply in the past."
I believe that global warming is clearly taking place. I also believe peak oil is also upon us.
There are many people who I deeply respect who think otherwise (and they sometimes make some good points) and conversely many people I respect that agree with my positions on both.
I am in the Michael Ruppert school of thought.
I am a strong supporter of Alex Jones. Alex believes global warming is bunk. On this I have to disagree with him.
No, I am not a climate change denier.
I do understand the urgency.
But global warming has been an issue for decades.
As have many, many other issues.
But the only thing that the left is SUPER excited about now is the chimerical belief that the releasing of documents that as of yet have done nothing but corroborate what most already knew is going to free us from something or something.
As an American, can I tell you how exciting the Bush years were?
When - upon every revelation of wrongdoing and malfeasance during his Presidency - everyone believed, "This is it. This is what we've been waiting for. We've got 'em. They're going down!" only to see that hope crushed and the crime forgotten again and again and again.
But once we win the wikileak battle, TPTB will just give up, huh?
Oh goody.
All I'm saying is that we HAVE to demonstrate the patience and persistence of our enemies to solve these urgent problems and thinking that the outcome of the Wikileaks phenomenon is going to somehow magically advance our cause is shortsighted.
You wrote:
"A decade old event, 911, is neither the "single" nor the "primary" issue."
Sorry, as an American, I can think of none higher as it was THE seminal crime that made all subsequent crimes possible.
It psychologically scarred an entire country and to this day still stands as the moment when a dark agenda was overtly unleashed on the planet.
Hey, but since we have the event du jour to focus our attention on - an INFO WAR!!! - I guess everything gets relegated to the dustbin of history. Ho hum.
From the point of view of our present rulers, therefore, the only genuine dangers are the splitting-off of a new group of able, underemployed, power-hungry people, and the growth of liberalism and skepticism in their own ranks.
~George Orwell, 1984
The world needs more Marx.
"There is only one correct answer to those Leftist intellectuals who desperately await the arrival of a new revolutionary agent capable of instigating the long-expected radical social transformation. It takes the form of the old Hopi saying, with a wonderful Hegelian twist from substance to subject: 'We are the ones we have been waiting for.' (This is a version of Gandhi's motto: 'Be yourself the cdhange you want to see in the world.') Waiting for someone else to do the job for us is a way of rationalizing our inactivity" (Zizek, 2009, p. 154).
"Today, new Kravchenkos are emerging everywhere, from the US to India, China and Japan, from Latin America to Africa, the Middle East to Western and Eastern Europe. They are disparate and speak different languages, but they are not as few as may appear--and the greatest fear of the rulers is that these voices will start to reverberate and reinforce each other in solidarity. Aware that the odds are pulling us towards castastrophe, these actors are ready to act against all odds" (p. 156).
I did not say "WikiLeaks is a government set-up", I am saying that is a real possibility. On the other hand, it might not be.
For me the evidence cuts in two directions. I have not made up my mind.
And the fight for free speech transcends whether it is or it isn't.
The issue of WikiLeaks is settled law. It was settled in 1971.

Justice Hugo L. Black provided the most passionate opinion out of all the Justices. He came down particularly harsh on the Nixon Administration, showing utter disgust for it's lack of respect for the First Amendment.
Here is an excerpt from Justice Black's concurring opinion:
I adhere to the view that the Government's case against the Washington Post should have been dismissed, and that the injunction against the New York Times should have been vacated without oral argument when the cases were first presented to this Court. I believe that every moment's continuance of the injunctions against these newspapers amounts to a flagrant, indefensible, and continuing violation of the First Amendment. Furthermore, after oral argument, I agree completely that we must affirm the judgment of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and reverse the judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit for the reasons stated by my Brothers DOUGLAS and BRENNAN. In my view, it is unfortunate that some of my Brethren are apparently willing to hold that the publication of news may sometimes be enjoined. Such a holding would make a shambles of the First Amendment.
Our Government was launched in 1789 with the adoption of the Constitution. The Bill of Rights, including the First Amendment, followed in 1791. Now, for the first time in the 182 years since the founding of the Republic, the federal courts are asked to hold that the First Amendment does not mean what it says, but rather means that the Government can halt the publication of current news of vital importance to the people of this country.
In seeking injunctions against these newspapers, and in its presentation to the Court, the Executive Branch seems to have forgotten the essential purpose and history of the First Amendment. When the Constitution was adopted, many people strongly opposed it because the document contained no Bill of Rights to safeguard certain basic freedoms. They especially feared that the new powers granted to a central government might be interpreted to permit the government to curtail freedom of religion, press, assembly, and speech. In response to an overwhelming public clamor, James Madison offered a series of amendments to satisfy citizens that these great liberties would remain safe and beyond the power of government to abridge. Madison proposed what later became the First Amendment in three parts, two of which are set out below, and one of which proclaimed:
"The people shall not be deprived or abridged of their right to speak, to write, or to publish their sentiments, and the freedom of the press, as one of the great bulwarks of liberty, shall be inviolable."
(Emphasis added.) The amendments were offered to curtail and restrict the general powers granted to the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches two years before in the original Constitution. The Bill of Rights changed the original Constitution into a new charter under which no branch of government could abridge the people's freedoms of press, speech, religion, and assembly. Yet the Solicitor General argues and some members of the Court appear to agree that the general powers of the Government adopted in the original Constitution should be interpreted to limit and restrict the specific and emphatic guarantees of the Bill of Rights adopted later. I can imagine no greater perversion of history. Madison and the other Framers of the First Amendment, able men that they were, wrote in language they earnestly believed could never be misunderstood: "Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom . . . of the press. . . ." Both the history and language of the First Amendment support the view that the press must be left free to publish news, whatever the source, without censorship, injunctions, or prior restraints.
In the First Amendment, the Founding Fathers gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The Government's power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the Government. The press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people. Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. And paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shot and shell. In my view, far from deserving condemnation for their courageous reporting, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other newspapers should be commended for serving the purpose that the Founding Fathers saw so clearly. In revealing the workings of government that led to the Vietnam War, the newspapers nobly did precisely that which the Founders hoped and trusted they would do.
(for wikileaks and the u.s.a.!)...
in a land where a country's high leaders lay claim...
united states people stand feeling close pain...
their ears hear those big shots come up with excuses...
but a quick look around soon reveals where the truth is!...
from vacant lot store fronts to more soldiers' graves...
home planted sale signs hide mailbox names!...
college loan paybacks tack federal debt...
while industrial workers learn of layoffs they'll get!...
from stress-filled environments to lone chilly rooms...
paycheck to paycheck can't face future doom!...
already our seniors and jobless and ill...
view less options left with so few dollar bills!...
this is our country folks!... see for yourselves!...
the majority are us and most everyone else!...
struggling with hardships under all those in charge!...
as governmental misbehavior runs rampant at large!...
why is it our leaders dislike these truths shown?...
is it not we the people who deserve rights to know?!...
when did government's first duty become serving the government?!...
and not justly the people for whom they were sent!...
how can leaders say 'patriot' means being patriotic to them?...
when they won't play by the rules a constitution defends!...
instead it is them who lack the patriotism...
to stop their own underhand tactics which bring further bad things!...
and how can leaders use terrorism as an overall reason?...
to keep their own bully methods hidden somewhere in secret?!...
they intimidate unfairly to sway public opinion...
and steer clear of truth needed to fix dilemmas we're in!...
this is our country folks!... see for yourselves!...
the majority are us and most everyone else!...
struggling with hardships under all those in charge!...
as governmental misbehavior runs rampant at large!...
how can government's deception be the best way to rule?...
when that curve of its wrist bends most fair and square tools!...
hence without accountability it'll feed a free-for-all!...
as our country's representatives wheel and deal above the law!...
it's no surprise that the government abhors wikileaks!...
truth might hinder the officials soon from doing as they please!...
and make it more difficult to reassure u.s. citizens...
not to fret government's business and leave it all up to them!...
but we must tend to our nation and future well-being!...
to end unjust procedures and the policies we're seeing!...
they insist we believe in things proven untrue!...
now we need these disclosures to help build anew!...
this is our country folks!... see for yourselves!...
the majority are us and most everyone else!...
struggling with hardships under all those in charge!...
as governmental misbehavior runs rampant at large!...

the best of wishes'n'ways'n'todays to bring fair'n'square and care!... :)
"It is her duplicity, along with the leaders of both political parties, that now stands exposed by the WikiLeaks documents."
It is also the _primary_ reason that Pelosi refused to Impeach George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, because most of Congress is up to their eyeballs in covering up the truth, and if the truth had come out during Impeachment, most of Congress would have had to be locked up along with Bush and Cheney.
