The Truth Will Always Win
In 1958 a young Rupert Murdoch, then owner and editor of Adelaide's The News, wrote: "In the race between secrecy and truth, it seems inevitable that truth will always win."
His observation perhaps reflected his father Keith Murdoch's expose that Australian troops were being needlessly sacrificed by incompetent British commanders on the shores of Gallipoli. The British tried to shut him up but Keith Murdoch would not be silenced and his efforts led to the termination of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign.
Nearly a century later, WikiLeaks is also fearlessly publishing facts that need to be made public.
I grew up in a Queensland country town where people spoke their minds bluntly. They distrusted big government as something that could be corrupted if not watched carefully. The dark days of corruption in the Queensland government before the Fitzgerald inquiry are testimony to what happens when the politicians gag the media from reporting the truth.
These things have stayed with me. WikiLeaks was created around these core values. The idea, conceived in Australia, was to use internet technologies in new ways to report the truth.
WikiLeaks coined a new type of journalism: scientific journalism. We work with other media outlets to bring people the news, but also to prove it is true. Scientific journalism allows you to read a news story, then to click online to see the original document it is based on. That way you can judge for yourself: Is the story true? Did the journalist report it accurately?
Democratic societies need a strong media and WikiLeaks is part of that media. The media helps keep government honest. WikiLeaks has revealed some hard truths about the Iraq and Afghan wars, and broken stories about corporate corruption.
People have said I am anti-war: for the record, I am not. Sometimes nations need to go to war, and there are just wars. But there is nothing more wrong than a government lying to its people about those wars, then asking these same citizens to put their lives and their taxes on the line for those lies. If a war is justified, then tell the truth and the people will decide whether to support it.
If you have read any of the Afghan or Iraq war logs, any of the US embassy cables or any of the stories about the things WikiLeaks has reported, consider how important it is for all media to be able to report these things freely.
WikiLeaks is not the only publisher of the US embassy cables. Other media outlets, including Britain ‘s The Guardian, The New York Times, El Pais in Spain and Der Spiegel in Germany have published the same redacted cables.
Yet it is WikiLeaks, as the co-ordinator of these other groups, that has copped the most vicious attacks and accusations from the US government and its acolytes. I have been accused of treason, even though I am an Australian, not a US, citizen. There have been dozens of serious calls in the US for me to be "taken out" by US special forces. Sarah Palin says I should be "hunted down like Osama bin Laden", a Republican bill sits before the US Senate seeking to have me declared a "transnational threat" and disposed of accordingly. An adviser to the Canadian Prime Minister's office has called on national television for me to be assassinated. An American blogger has called for my 20-year-old son, here in Australia, to be kidnapped and harmed for no other reason than to get at me.
And Australians should observe with no pride the disgraceful pandering to these sentiments by Prime Minister Gillard and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have not had a word of criticism for the other media organisations. That is because The Guardian, The New York Times and Der Spiegel are old and large, while WikiLeaks is as yet young and small.
We are the underdogs. The Gillard government is trying to shoot the messenger because it doesn't want the truth revealed, including information about its own diplomatic and political dealings.
Has there been any response from the Australian government to the numerous public threats of violence against me and other WikiLeaks personnel? One might have thought an Australian prime minister would be defending her citizens against such things, but there have only been wholly unsubstantiated claims of illegality. The Prime Minister and especially the Attorney-General are meant to carry out their duties with dignity and above the fray. Rest assured, these two mean to save their own skins. They will not.
Every time WikiLeaks publishes the truth about abuses committed by US agencies, Australian politicians chant a provably false chorus with the State Department: "You'll risk lives! National security! You'll endanger troops!" Then they say there is nothing of importance in what WikiLeaks publishes. It can't be both. Which is it?
It is neither. WikiLeaks has a four-year publishing history. During that time we have changed whole governments, but not a single person, as far as anyone is aware, has been harmed. But the US , with Australian government connivance, has killed thousands in the past few months alone.
US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates admitted in a letter to the US congress that no sensitive intelligence sources or methods had been compromised by the Afghan war logs disclosure. The Pentagon stated there was no evidence the WikiLeaks reports had led to anyone being harmed in Afghanistan. NATO in Kabul told CNN it couldn't find a single person who needed protecting. The Australian Department of Defence said the same. No Australian troops or sources have been hurt by anything we have published.
But our publications have been far from unimportant. The US diplomatic cables reveal some startling facts:
The US asked its diplomats to steal personal human material and information from UN officials and human rights groups, including DNA, fingerprints, iris scans, credit card numbers, internet passwords and ID photos, in violation of international treaties. Presumably Australian UN diplomats may be targeted, too.
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia asked the US Officials in Jordan and Bahrain want Iran ‘s nuclear program stopped by any means available.
Britain's Iraq inquiry was fixed to protect "US interests".
Sweden is a covert member of NATO and US intelligence sharing is kept from parliament.
The US is playing hardball to get other countries to take freed detainees from Guantanamo Bay . Barack Obama agreed to meet the Slovenian President only if Slovenia took a prisoner. Our Pacific neighbour Kiribati was offered millions of dollars to accept detainees.
In its landmark ruling in the Pentagon Papers case, the US Supreme Court said "only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government". The swirling storm around WikiLeaks today reinforces the need to defend the right of all media to reveal the truth.

POLY: I understand your reservations given the climate of dis-information and the cloud of BS that passes for news all across America.
Truly we are living in Orwellian times given that Truth, itself, comes into question. Those with the big bucks get to shape and frame debates, while owning access to media and thereby determining who gets the pass to be heard. So many in America confuse celebrity with "being in the know," or anointed as official expert on whatever the issue du jour.
Was it Rumsfeld who made a quote along the lines of "We'll create our own reality now"?
It's a sorry state of events when millions entirely discredit the evidence of global warming, and millions more believe in End Times. Rational arguments bounce off these types like raindrops hitting an oily windshield.
Out of so massive an illusion it is difficult to summon a collective awakening, especially when the vast majority neither knows that they sleep, nor recognize the degree to which they've gotten swept up in twisted illusions.
Where would the MIC be without so massive a web of deception to lend it cover?
I believe Julian is credible. Now whether or not his mission has been co-opted by nefarious forces entertaining their own agendas, I cannot say.
Here's the main question:
If you believe that on the day of 9/11 the American people watched as a crime was committed in broad daylight - a crime that killed thousands of people and was broadcast live - how can you ever say that there are lines "they" would not cross?
How can you ever allow yourself to again think, "You know, that idea is just too outrageous. No one would do that. No one could be that devious."
Right now, Libermann and our government are establishing precedent for the wholesale censoring of the Internet due to this scandal and nothing of much import has even been revealed.
What happens the NEXT time an unpleasant truth comes to light?
What laws are being worked on right now to solidify this censorship program?
This is why I remain skeptical.
We are living in the shadow of heinous uninvestigated and unprosecuted crimes and that thought alone should all give us pause I believe.
Well stated... but what SR stated pretty well sums it up:
"I believe Julian is credible. Now whether or not his mission has been co-opted by nefarious forces entertaining their own agendas, I cannot say."
Hits it on the head for me. Most everything is almost always complicated (lots of conditions in there). Nothing is certain. Tomorrow never knows, or if it knows, its not telling.
Julian, here is one more voice of support. I pray for your safety and the continuation of your work.
You have my undivided respect and I admire your exemplary courage, Mr. Assange!
You are a freedom and a truth fighter.
Empire has nothing but contempt for the majority of people and all living things on this planet. It an engine of death, destruction, lies, deception, and tyranny. It must be stopped and dismantled.
Dead Man Blogging.
I wish you luck, Mr. Assange.
But you are playing hardball with people who cheat with every breath they steal from everyone else.
The banking system, economy, and future of Iceland have been devastated by secret and abusive banking practices of their banks and former government. Iceland is a very democratic society. It has changed governments and is now trying to re-assert openness. As part of this, they have passed laws to make Iceland a safe place for free press and investigative journalism. Apparently, Assange helped to craft some of the new laws. In November, a business office for Wikileaks was incorporated and opened in Iceland. According to wikileaks.is, the address is:
Sunshine Press Productions ehf
Skulagötu 19
101 Reykjavik, Iceland
People who would like to express support for Wikileaks and Assange, can send to that contact address.
(PS: "ehf" is not a typo; it is the Icelandic acronym for "incorporated")
The Green Party is the major party in Iceland. This came about after their recent financial crisis. They, unlike Ireland, did not go along with the neo-liberal, austere, Euro position. They chose independence instead. We'll see how it goes. Other countries have done far better by turning away from neo-liberalism - Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador
Serious Citizen, Thanks for the address; I just wrote a check. Hope it gets through and no one freezes his bank account in Iceland.
If WikiLeaks had been around in the run-up to the Iraq war, exposing all the lies that preceded the invasion, would Bush still have been able to sell the war?
Quite possibly not.
The run-up to the next war (or the continuing expansion of the current ones), how easy will that be to sell if WikiLeaks is still around?
And the banks are the next ones to be put under the microscope.
So they don't just need to stop WikiLeaks, they need to crucify Assange and Bradley Manning. They need to set an example so horrific that no one will even consider setting up another WikiLeaks.
But it is too late. The cat is out of the bag. The meme is in the atmosphere.
WikiLeaks forever!
Isn't there already a spin-off organization from WL? One or more of the WL personnel set up to work independently. More is better for the public. Hopefully by now, unknown persons in WL and elsewhere have this important work growing ever stronger and more widespread.
They have purportedly released <1% of 250k docs. Are the promised finance docs amongst the said 250k docs, or are they in yet the next batch?
In early November some disgruntled WikiLeaks employees said they were going to found a similar site. I haven't seen anything about it since. The bank documents are not part of the current document release (i.e. not in the 250k). They are from a large U.S. bank and will supposedly expose an "ecosystem of corruption".
Update on the "rape" charges. According to National Public Radio Assange went to a conference in Sweden and slept with two different women on two consecutive nights. Woman A says the condom broke during consensual sex and JA continued against her wishes. Woman B says she had consensual sex with JA with a condom, but had sex again later without one. Apparently she didn't realize he was riding bareback. Both women attempted to reach JA but couldn't as he had his cell phone switched off so it couldn't be tracked. They communicated with each other and went to the police because they wanted JA tested for sexually transmitted diseases. According to the report they didn't want him charged with anything but the person on duty decided there was a sufficient basis for charging him with Sweden's lowest degree rape charge.
however, I take exception on 9/11...
I, too, take exception to Assange's position on 9/11. I support his desire for transparency in gov't, but there's something mighty fishy about his public statements supporting the government's obvious lies about 9/11. Also, Osama bin Laden is dead. How can he not know that?
just made another donation to wikileaks a few minutes ago... (a $10.00 euro donation cost $13.32 us)...

wikileaks deserves our support!... (they have my support!)...
the truth needs to be exposed!... the documents and cables reiterate what goes on behind the scenes in losses of human lives and resources due to power plays based mainly on illusion and carried out with deceptive practices!... and these things need to be made known!... especially for the sake of human lives and resources and the future!...
it saddens me to see the mentalities that don't know any better call for harm to be done to julian assange... clearly he's a factor for change towards an age of more awareness in what's going on!... and our world needs this now more than ever!...
(when representatives of a government rely on a system of deception to get things done... it's that deceptive system itself which should be its citizens' biggest fear!)...
"let facts be submitted to a candid world"... (from the united states "declaration of independence")...
the best of wishes'n'ways'n'todays for the sake of saving human lives and resources and more!... :)
and on a further note... regarding certain credit card shutdown announcements...
a shutdown is in the works... but it hasn't actually closed the process yet... (although the media may want it to appear otherwise... who knows ?)... anyway... there's a time frame of opportunity between the two... so get your donations in while ya can!... (mine did indeed go through!)... the best of wishes'n'ways'n'todays to all!... :)

sallysense,
How did you make your donation? PayPal has supposedly cancelled their account.
I agree with those who wish that Assange would be anti war.
However, maybe he is still evolving.....If he is permitted to live, then he may have a different perspective in a few years time......
I support you, Julian Assange. I sense your authenticity of purpose and have the highest regard for your intentionality and unwavering courage and belief in the truth as the highest value we have. On all levels.
rita
what does anti-war mean?
were the north vietnamese war criminals as they were fighting the impirial powers?
were the allied countries of WWII as guilty as the nazies and the fascists?
I think these are very good questions.
Do you think the winners ever won anything?
I frankly don't know if releasing this private correspondence will turn out to be good or bad. Will it lead to deaths and war or peace and security? Is Assange a Terroist or a Patriot? Is he a Criminal or an Innocent?
The most amazing thing to me is that not one post questions any of these things. Not one. That should tell everyone here sommething.
we know your true colors. no worries.
Good, we need transparency.
Neither, hopefully accountability.
Neither, just a concerned world citizen.
Neither, he's Australian.
I'm still trying to figure out what this tells us....
If you "frankly don't know", mightymite, then read the leaks that have been published. It is also logical to assume that at least some of these comments were written by authors who read some of the leaks or a few summaries. In any case, there is much you may infer by the hysterical, authoritarian response of the US and allied govts.
A few more facts - this is not private correspondence between individuals with universally recognized (if not protected) privacy rights. This is official communication between paid employees and operatives of the US Govt on specific political missions, with specific political intent, all on the taxpayer's dime. This kind of traffic should be made public under emergency or unusual conditions, which by any sensible measure, exist now.
Finally, what will lead to deaths and continued war is the war policy of the US, not leaks ABOUT the war policy of the US. Cables never killed anybody; bullets and bombs do the killing.
"I frankly don't know if releasing this private correspondence will turn out to be good or bad. Will it lead to deaths and war or peace and security? Is Assange a Terroist (sic) or a Patriot?"--mightymite

It's not the least bit surprising that "frankly [you] don't know." Regardless, here's Julian Assange:
“WikiLeaks has a four-year publishing history. During that time we have changed whole governments, but not a single person, as far as anyone is aware, has been harmed. But the US, with Australian government connivance, has killed thousands in the past few months alone.
“US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates admitted in a letter to the US congress that no sensitive intelligence sources or methods had been compromised by the Afghan war logs disclosure. Instead of pondering the ridiculous and absurd dichotomy of whether or not Mr. Assange is "a Terroist (sic) or a Patriot", perhaps you should be considering this instead:
Chris Floyd:
'[H]ow many thousands of people, how many tens of thousands, have been killed by our bipartisan Terror Warriors in the four years of WikiLeaks’ existence? How many millions have been “harmed” not only by the direct operations of the Terror War, but by the ever-widening, ever-deepening violence, hatred and turmoil it is spreading throughout the world? (Not to mention the accelerating collapse of American society, which has been financially, politically and morally bankrupted by the acceptance of aggressive war, torture, elite rapine and authoritarian rule.)
But none of the perpetrators of these acts, past or present, are in jail, or have even been prosecuted, or investigated, or inconvenienced in any way. Yet Assange is in a British prison tonight – and it is certainly not for the “sexual misconduct” charges that were filed against him in August, which then became the basis of an unprecedented worldwide arrest order of the type ordinarily reserved for war criminals – for those, in fact, accused of aggressive war, torture, elite rapine and authoritarian rule. The judge refused to grant bail, saying that Assange had “access to financial means” and could flee the country – perhaps a bitter joke on milord’s part, aimed at a man whose means of financial support are being systematically shut down by the most powerful government and corporate forces in the world. Journalist John Pilger and filmmaker Ken Loach were among those who appeared in court ready to stand surety for Assange, but to no avail.
WikiLeaks will doubtless try to struggle on. And Assange says he has given the entire diplomatic trove to 100,000 people. By dribs and drabs, shards of truth will get out. But the world’s journalists – and those persons of conscience working in the world’s governments – have been given a hard, harsh, unmistakable lesson in the new realities of our degraded time. Tell a truth that discomforts power, that challenges its domination over our lives, our discourse, our very thoughts, and you will be destroyed. No institution, public or private, will stand with you; the most powerful entities, public and private, will be arrayed against you, backed up by overwhelming violent force. This is where we are now. This is what we are now.'

That the US government can now call out Interpol at its pleasure is frightening news, too. As are all the leaks showing the State Department's increased militarization and, today (December 7), the news from The Guardian that NATO made backroom agreements with eastern European countries to "protect them from Russia." But did it by having the members' top military leaders make the deal, thereby avoiding submission to the Senate here (and no doubt to other NATO members' legislative bodies) for approval.
The Guardian has another excellent column today by John Naughton, meant for world powers, called "Live with the WikiLeakable world or shut down the net. It's your choice." Looks like the choice has been made, doesn't it?
The most amusing public remark of the last week? The attorney representing the US who said the warrant had "nothing to do with politics" and was "a criminal" matter. When before has Interpol scoured the world for someone accused of consensual sex, but with refusal to use a condom (or refusing to stop when the condom broke; I've read both).?
We owe Mr. Assange and all who support his work a great debt. Keep 'em coming!! (On Latin America, too, I hope.)
hadn't the financial fascists based in the US / UK / Israel controlled the interpol,
the war criminals wouldn't have been able to step outside the US / UK / Israel.
The only thing i disagree with in this article, is truth will always win. Unfortunatly, I dont think it does.
Lets support Assange and Wikileaks any way we can so truth does have better chances at winning some of the times.
The common truism is, "the truth will out," which is for the most part true. But truth only "wins" when it actually has some positive influence. We all know about Lyndon Johnson's lies (and Bill Moyers helped tell them!) When the truth finally came out, it was too late. And the Bush administration's lies and war on Iraqis - too late.
Truth is merely one of many alternative realities sold to us...remember advertising and emotionalism determines peoples reality now..not enough critical thinkers to cut through it.
After 9/11, I thought the best alternative to war would be to shut down AlQeda by going after all their internet and financial accounts; instead they bombed a couple of countries' worth of civilians. Now they are showing that they can use that strategy when they want to do so. Go after the Saudi bin Laden's? Never; just symbolically kill a million or so pawns. I hope the mirror sites are up and ready when needed.
now you know the emptiness of "blanket pacifism".
financial or economic terrorism is as criminal as military violence.
not all violences are the same.
Ok kids we can now all sit and watch TV, the end of news.
Wikileaks was a wake up call for governments around the world; especially the U.S.,as they are realizing that a free internet is incompatible with their governments lies and secrets. The net also exposes just how corrupt the T.V. and print media news has become. Julian Assange being demonized in the whore media and some even wanting him assassinated is really,in my view a red herring, as this is now exactly what the politically, powerful elite have wanted for a long time. They have their phony war on terror and now they are using Wikileaks to trump up their phony war on the net. This gives governments, like the U.S. a way to control and censor the net just like they do the MSM. Looks like Julian Assange is the false flag they needed to control the net, like the Gulf of Tonkin or the pack of lies about the WMD'S in Iran.
Bingo! Excellent analytical insight! Mr. Assange is a modern-day hero fighting for "true" liberty and justice for all. That's antithetical to the ideology of the right wing neocons and corporatist, elite ruling class.
Thanks pavroviandog. Julian, in my view, has innocently given them what they wanted for a long time: A false flag way to wage WAR ON THE NET!
JON STEWART -- “American society’s official court jester”
“Comic Jon Stewart attacks WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange
“Comic Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, the satirical US news program and talk show, went out of his way November 30 to attack WikiLeaks’ co-founder Julian Assange and the exposure of American government conspiracies around the world.”
Super good reading: http://www.wsws.org/articles/2010/dec2010/stew-d07.shtml
"“Comic Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, the satirical US news program and talk show, went out of his way November 30 to attack WikiLeaks’ co-founder Julian Assange and the exposure of American government conspiracies around the world.”
What do you expect from this weasel and the rest of his Bag-O-Comedic Clown pals. They are the stooges. The (well paid) Jesters for everything Empire.
WikiLeaks isn't just exposing the Clintons of this world, its exposing these so called "liberal entertainers for justice" as well. That's a good thing, too.
WikiLeaks, well, its kinda like flypaper. It catches the little flies and the big, fat, stinky green ones -the ones that just love sucking on political turds for their livelihoods.
From the wsw.org article:
"Stewart has had his good days in the past, attacking Bush administration officials and Wall Street’s media mouthpieces. He may still have some ahead of him, but his general trajectory is increasingly toward the establishment."
Yes, I have thought on many occasions that Stewart was once a valid critic of establishment attitudes and corporate double-speak. So sad to see him as just another mouthpiece for the opinions of the empire. Sad, but he's been going more and more limp towards figures of power ever since Obama won the presidency...
I've stopped all watching ever since that ridiculous march for sanity.
That was *real* helpful.
Uh, no.
IMHO the lesson here is to be much more covert when doing what Assange did. Be as faceless and nameless as possible. If you use a train analogy, the US is like a train barreling down the tracks at one hundred miles an our. Assange is a person standing on the track putting his hand up and telling the train to stop, then taking the full energy of the train in the face when it doesn't even slow down.
Better to setup something on the track to derail the train well before it ever arrives at the spot then get the heck out of there. When taking on a Goliath, a David should be careful so he can live to fight another day.
The train is moving pretty slow considering all the leaks and he is still fighting.
But If he goes down maybe you can replace him with your "faceless" strategy.
AG Eric Holder is alive? I guess it was only a coma.
The US Ministry of Justice is all over this; no bail for unprotected sex.
Eric Holder is a Democrat. He is just doing what Democrats do and have done for a long time. No surprises here.
True Journalism is hard to find. Interesting that Rupert Murdock, who has almost single handedly turned Journalism into a Circus side show, came from a sincere family tradition. He has used a media outlet to broadcast Propaganda and Brain Wash American voters. How very sorry his Father must be.
There is a difference between Real News and Entertainment. Some times this difference is hard to recognize. In this Era, to find Real News, you have to look hard. Thank You for your In The Face facts. It is obvious that you have been set up and that those Corporations and Countries want you silenced and the information stopped. It is very disturbing that countries like Britain and Sweden and the Swiss are complying with the wishes of America.
there are a few quite obvious moles trying to poison this site.
please do not feed them. just tag them.
if i were a mole, would i be so disruptive as to be noticed by dull minds like you?
disrupting and poisoning are two different things. try to think if you can.
"You'll risk lives! National security! You'll endanger troops!"
I.e.: You'll risk our lives--the rich and powerful. Our Security--the rich and powerful. You'll endanger us--the rich and powerful!
Gotta love it when the tables are turned on these bastards.
The neocons, the thwarted foreign policy, the dirty secret wars, the corruption, etc....these are truly endangering American citizens' lives & wellfare.
