Interrogation Nation
Dahlia Lithwick at Slate offers the smartest take so far on George W. Bush's noncoerced confession that he authorized waterboarding and aggressively defended torture as part of his "legacy" to future presidents:
The old adage held that if they couldn't get you for the crime, they would get you for the coverup. But this week, it was revealed that both the crime and the coverup will go permanently unpunished. Which suggests that everything in between will go unpunished as well. In an America in which the former president can boast on television that he approved the water-boarding of U.S. prisoners, it can hardly be a shock that following a lengthy investigation, no criminal charges will be filed against those who destroyed the evidence of CIA abuse of prisoners Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. We keep waiting breathlessly for someone, somewhere, to have a day of reckoning over the prisoners we tortured in the wake of 9/11, without recognizing that there is no bag man to be found and that therefore we are all the bag man.
President Barack Obama decided long ago that he would "turn the page" on prisoner abuse and other illegality connected to the Bush Administration's war on terror. What he didn't seem to understand, what he still seems not to appreciate, is that what was on that page would bleed through onto the next page and the page after that. There's no getting past torture. There is only getting comfortable with it. The U.S. flirtation with torture is not locked in the past or in the black sites or prisons at which it occurred. Now more than ever, it's feted on network television and held in reserve for the next president who persuades himself that it's not illegal after all.
Since Barack Obama became president, the debate over torture in America has taken a morally corrupt turn. Defenders of the old regime continue to defend the use of torture as essential to the nation's defense. Their claims are contradicted by the facts: torture was used to extract false confessions that fueled, among other things, the invasion of Iraq on false pretenses. The fact that America tortured is still a principal recruiting tool for radical Islamists. But Obama has kept silent in the face of all of this, not wishing to engage torture apologists in debate. More significantly, he has apparently encouraged his Justice Department to squelch any meaningful investigation of torture, in violation of the clear requirements of law. A policy that says "don't look back" means the triumph of torture: while we may not be captives of our past, we are the captives of our perception of the past. When one side offers an airbrushed version of the past and the other is silent, then, in the binary world of Washington, victory goes to the falsifiers.

Show AllThe only question I have: is there even a smidgeon of humanity or a sense of justice left in a person once he attains power in this country or do they have to completely flush themselves of any an all noble qualities before being inducted to the "big leagues"?
Interviewer: Mr. Pres, regarding torture...this sh*t is completely f*cked and you know it.
O: Well, yes, but you have to understand...
Interviewer: Come on, man. As a human being what the f*ck are you doing?
O: The world is a danger..
Interviewer: Enough. Just STFU already.
Again, why keep harping on this point by bringing up fantastical scenarios?
Because one must understand the tactics that are being used against us.
By keeping the "conversation" going, we ourselves are engaging in a fantasy that we are actually involving ourselves in a discussion that doesn't have a predetermined outcome.
As a good example, look to Israel and the Palestinians. Does anyone really believe that the "peace process" is anything more than a cover for Israel to keep on stealing more land all the while our leaders pretend that they are actually trying to solve the problem?
Now, apply the above example to ANY aspect of our political "discourse".
While we believe ourselves to be "serious" and "engaged" when joining in the "dialogue" our leaders pre-frame and distribute to us, they are moving forward with their theft and depravity.
The "dialogue" - jut like reality TV - is meant to keep you distracted.
We must begin to call this sham out for what it is.
To at least let our rulers know that we know.
In the end that may be only cold comfort but we have to start to somewhere and while obviously no one would say anything like the above to the President we have to start thinking this way.
Once we abandon our ethical and common senses, we are playing on their ballfield.
Keep in mind that nearly 27 months prior to Obama moving into the white house and proceeding to tacitly approving Team Dubya's crimes, Nancy Pelosi's first words upon becoming House Speaker were "impeachment is off the table", thereby confirming that Team Dubya's license to steal and murder would have no expiration date, irrespective of who controls Congress.
It would be bad enough if Obama was the problem. The past 4 years have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Democratic Party is complicit in crimes committed by Team Dubya and his successors.
The USG is a criminal organization and is continuous from one administration to the next and the same for congress.Furthermore its steals tax money to engage in criminal activity, illegal invasions, murder of civilians, graft and corruption. You get the idea and let's face facts the USG is a criminal enterprise on behalf of the WEALTHY PREDATORY CAPITALIST WELFARE KINGS.
The 'war on terrorism' is over.
The 'enemy' won.
You surrendered without a fight.
And now you live in a nation where the Police can commit any indignity, commit any outrageous brutality, commit any crime up-to and including rape and murder, and get away with it.
What's worse, your disease is spreading to other formerly free, formerly 'democratic' countries, like the UK, Canada, France, Germany... the list goes on. And on. And on. And grows ever more each day. As does the list of victims.
The TSA, the Police... can strip search anyone, for any (or no) reason. The Corporations can sell you poisons disguised as food, death in every package. The politicians can kill and maim.
And no one will resist.
No wonder the world looks on you as diseased sheep, unfit to be considered civilized.
I would tell the people of the US to go to hell...
But you are already in a hell of your own making.
Non Serviam - I will not serve.
And speaking of the TSA; after this weekend's fiasco and the politicians coming out to say they are going to investigate him for daring to leave the security area(http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/nov/15/tsa-probe-scan-resistor/), even though they brought in a policeman to escort him out of the security area, we have this story today:

We live in a time of insanity and the police state is fanning the flames of incoherence to make it easier to treat everyone like dirt and take away every right, not to mention quality of life. And we have "average" citizens responding to all of this with the same insane excuse of keeping us secure. If I had any hair left, I'd be pulling it out in clumps.
peacekeepertwo : Its Interesting that most well paying Jobs availiable today, involve causing pain an suffering for fellow humans. If you complain about this the Corporate line will aways be, if you kill funding for this millions of jobs will disappear. Corporations have created a World where Americans are afraid the other guy will do what they have done to him.
If we are going to "turn the page" and ignore war crimes, then NO citizen in the US should ever be tried for any crime. Refuse to serve on a jury-- or, if selected for jury duty, be the one juror who refuses to return a guilty verdict. Our justice system is anything but.
I wonder how long it will be before the Blackshirts will be forcing intellectuals, protesters, writers and critics to drink their quart of Castor Oil, then stand in the street until they soil themselves to the laughter of the Blackshirts?
What was never pointed out when Mussolini was doing that is that Castor Oil is a slow poison. Taken in doses like that, it probably killed off many of the victims over days or months.
Sadly, I fear that, whatever we do, we're toast.
