When Presidential Sermons Collide
President Obama gave an interview earlier this week to an Indonesian television station in lieu of the scheduled trip to that country which was canceled due to the health care vote. In 2008, Indonesia empowered a national commission to investigate human rights abuses committed by its own government under the U.S.-backed Suharto regime "in an attempt to finally bring the perpetrators to justice," and Obama was asked in this interview: "Is your administration satisfied with the resolution of the past human rights abuses in Indonesia?" He replied:
We have to acknowledge that those past human rights abuses existed. We can't go forward without looking backwards . . . .
When asked last year about whether the United States should use similar tribunals to investigate its own human rights abuses, as well his view of other countries' efforts (such as Spain) to investigate those abuses, Obama said:
I'm a strong believer that it's important to look forward and not backwards, and to remind ourselves that we do have very real security threats out there.
That "Look-Forward/Not-Backward" formulation is one which Obama and his top aides have frequently repeated to argue against any investigations in the U.S. Why, as Obama sermonized, must Indonesians first look backward before being able to move forward, whereas exactly the opposite is true of Americans? If a leader is going to demand that other countries adhere to the very "principles" which he insists on violating himself, it's probably best not to use antithetical clichés when issuing decrees, for the sake of appearances if nothing else.
The New Yorker's Jane Mayer -- in the last paragraph of her new article documenting the multiple lies told by former Bush speechwriter and current Washington Post columnist Marc Theissen in his pro-torture book -- offered the best summary yet as to why Obama's "Look Forward/Not Backward" mentality is so destructive:
The publication of "Courting Disaster" suggests that Obama's avowed determination "to look forward, not back" has laid the recent past open to partisan reinterpretation. By holding no one accountable for past abuse, and by convening no commission on what did and didn't protect the country, President Obama has left the telling of this dark chapter in American history to those who most want to whitewash it.
Nothing enables the glorification of crimes, and nothing ensures their future re-occurrence, more than shielding the criminals from all accountability. It's nice that Barack Obama is willing to dispense that lecture to other countries, but it's not so nice that he does exactly the opposite in his own.

Show AllNixon should never have been pardoned by Ford. The nightmare didn't end with that act, it merely continued the practice of placing the president above the law.
The nightmare STARTED with that act. From that day forward electeds realized they could steal, lie, murder and cheat and not be held accountable by the checks and balances, courts or voters.
That is why the corporate paymasters have all of the politicians' attention and the voters have none.
The trick is to be the original criminal. Nixon walked away unscathed. If, like Ford, you become an accomplice by pardoning him, you may find that the voters will toss you out in the next election.
This is such an absolutely great article. It is so simple.
It is exactly what the USA has to do. Not only with the Bush administration, but with the founding of the country itself.
The President of the United States of America needs to apologize in Congress on behalf of the nation for the genocide and ethnic cleansing that was visited upon the native tribes that inhabited the "north American" continent when the Europeans arrived.
Only then are we going to be able to truly move forward.
We are all native Americans now.
Obama is every bit the unitary executive Dubya was.
Rahm dusted off Rove's play book and the rest is history...the party-approved version of history.
"Obama is every bit the unitary executive Dubya was." Yep. Bravo Raydelcamino.
I'd add that he's rebranded the unitary executive and US policy with an attractive, smiling face, smooth articulate language, and a fake progressive veneer. And that is just what the corporate regime ordered when they bought the president during the campaign with unprecedented brib . . . ah, donations.
Paul Street from ZNet has a new book coming out called the Empire's New Clothes about the rebranding.
Here is his site:

Thanks for that link most useful thing I've seen here for days. Can we start speaking truth to power again and get back on track exactly like this folks?
President Obama must adhere to the edicts of the "Powers that Be" ....those who are really in charge...as concerns policy here in America. If not, the very real 'security threat' may be to him.
Why not! they already gave him the Nobel Prize!
Obama not only wants to look forward but he plans to keep moving forward with more of the same...
EXCLUSIVE…Indonesian Forces Tapped by Obama for Renewed US Aid Implicated in New Assassinations
In a Democracy Now! exclusive, investigative journalist and activist Allan Nairn reveals US-backed Indonesian armed forces carried out a series of assassinations of civilian activists in late 2009. The news comes as the White House moves towards increasing aid to the Indonesian military and lifting a twelve-year ban on the training of the notorious Indonesian military unit known as Kopassus. A US-trained Kopassus general who coordinated the assassinations confirmed to Nairn an Indonesian army role in the killings.
JUAN GONZALEZ: We end today’s show looking at US-Indonesian relations. The White House is moving towards increasing aid to the Indonesian armed forces and lifting a twelve-year ban on the training of the notorious Indonesian military unit known as Kopassus. The special forces unit has been linked to scores of human rights abuses in East Timor, Aceh, Papua and Java since its formation in the 1950s.
On Monday, Jeffrey Bader of the National Security Council acknowledged Kopassus had committed human rights violations in the past, but he said the Obama administration, quote, “hopes to be able, at some point, to move past and resolve those concerns.”
AMY GOODMAN: President Obama was scheduled to travel to Indonesia next week but the White House has announced the trip will be postponed ’til June because of the healthcare negotiations on Capitol Hill. The trip to Indonesia would have marked Barack Obama’s first time returning to Indonesia since he was elected president. He lived in Indonesia for several years as a child.
Well, yesterday I reached investigative journalist and activist Allan Nairn about his new investigation into assassinations by US-trained Indonesian army and Kopassus officers. I reached him in Southeast Asia.
ALLAN NAIRN: President Obama wants to restore military aid to the Indonesian armed forces, including Kopassus, the Red Berets. I’ve just come out with a piece that shows that the Indonesian army and Kopassus have been involved in a series of recent assassinations of civilian political activists. The piece names the names of the officers involved, including a Kopassus general named Sunarko. These assassinations were carried out in the region of Aceh in late 2009.
They targeted activists for the Aceh—the Partai Aceh, which is pro-independence. In one case, the case of a man named Tumijan, he was abducted, tortured to death. His body was dumped in a sewage ditch near an army post. In another, a man was sitting in his car outside his house. An assassin walked up, put two bullets in his head through the window.
According to a senior Indonesian official with detailed information on these murders, they’re part of a program of political murder being carried out by TNI, the Indonesian armed forces, and Kopassus and by military intelligence. And so, these killings are still going on today. And Obama is about to give them new aid on the pretense that the Indonesian army has reformed and has stopped killing civilians, which is false.
AMY GOODMAN: How do you know this, Allan?
ALLAN NAIRN: From people inside the Indonesian government, who gave the names of some of the killers and the officers they work for. And just a few hours ago, I spoke on the phone with General Aditya, who is the head of the police in Aceh, and he confirmed that his forces had in fact detained some of the assassins who were working for the army. They’d been holding them for months, but they never announced this, because they were afraid to do it. The police are afraid of the army. But when I asked him about it directly, he admitted it publicly for the first time. The Indonesian police have confirmed this. They know about it, but they’re afraid to act. The Indonesian army and Kopassus are running a program of killing civilians, and it’s active right now. And Obama wants to give them new US weapons, training and money.

Thanks for sharing this mcoyote. This makes it clear that Obama's "change" thingy doesn't include blatant hypocrisy.
Thanks for this link mcoyote...
After all that has happened since we elected Obama as POTUS, I am wondering right now, will we ever see another president who will stand up for what is RIGHT in this country again?
It seems the last one was JFK and for doing the right thing he had his brains blown all over the streets of Dallas in broad daylight.
Our country is being run by crooks, criminals, thugs and liars.
Am I "over-reaching" here?
Of course you're not over-reaching.
Still is; but Nader will be too old to run next time.. you didn't mean Obummer did you?
if so sorry.. sad
Time to stop relying on leaders and start doing it ourselves in our communities. I think the best thing that could happen for the world is the foul rotten U.S. empire breaking up which would get its boot heel off the world and perhaps allow us to set up some autonomous zones away from corporate MIC influence.
US exceptionalism reminds me of Nixon's presidential exceptionalism: "If the president does it, that means it's not illegal." ==> "If the US does it, that means it is not inappropriate."
As a practical matter, Borat's dual policy of justice for foreign criminals and immunity for domestic criminals makes sense. He is counting on the next corporate lawn jockey to protect him.
The Mendacity of Hope.
Addendum to the First Amendment of the Constitution which states:
"Our nation shall look forward, not backward, unless by looking backward we end up looking forward, in which case we must simply close our eyes entirely, especially when evidence of high crimes, war crimes, felonies and misdemeanors stands in front of us and we wish to cover our back side."
I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of The United States of America.
And to the republic for which it stands.
One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and JUSTICE FOR ALL.
I want to see justice in ALL the cases of government criminality that have occurred in this country over the years.
There are lots of places we could start.
The bombing of the USS Liberty in 1967 by Israel for over two hours comes to mind. Yet another "false flag" event with LBJ conspiring with Israel? According to witnesses he said to the Admiral of a nearby rescue ship, "I want the Liberty sunk to the bottom".
Watch "Dead in the Water" on YouTube and then try to tell me that Israel hasn't become our nemesis over all these years.
This country is living so many lies it makes me nauseous to ponder them all.
We need someone like Glenn Greenwald to run for president.
This country needs a cleansing of it's soul and the soap is the truth and the Justice Department is the water.
It will be the ONLY way we can move forward and to heal the world and move into that evolutionary leap of consciousness that is so sorely needed in order to bring lasting peace to the world for ourselves and future generations.
The U.S.S. Liberty was sunk to cover up Israeli war atrocities.
The Democrats just need to try harder to explain that the US is more special than the 95 percent of humanity outside America ;)
I agree with finallyawake that this is an exceptionally good, straightforward offering from Glenn Greenwald. I also strongly recommend following the link to Jane Mayer's latest article in the New Yorker that Greenwald conveniently provides.
On the basic issue of looking forward versus looking back, I still consider the best formulation to be that of Senator Patrick Leahy, discussing (I believe) the Bushies' warrantless electronic surveillance program: before we can turn the page, we must first read the page.

What do you make of the broo ha ha over Chinese censorship, a la google and godaddy, vis a vis American warrantless wiretapping and the nsa sifting through all the internet trafic? Isn't that another form of sermon collision?
I know you did not ask me, but my two cents is that it may appear to be inconsistent, but those positions are not really incompatible, as the concerns over Chinese censorship arise from the frustration of US plutocrats as they find their pathway blocked in their quest to influence Chinese minds in order to eventually dominate the Chinese culture, economy, and government just as they dominate the US culture, economy, and government (and the NSA spying is consistent with the goal of increasing their power).
There is a world of difference between China's censorship and the nsa spying - no? I mean they are both deplorable, but seriously. If this was China, I probably would be in jail right now for some of my CD posts; Or maybe not, because CD wouldn't even exist.
"Looking forward, not backward" has to be one of the most stupid things any US president has said, and that is really saying something.
If this policy were followed in ordinary affairs, few criminals would ever be punished because that would involve looking backward at his or her crimes instead of forward to a future where he or she has not yet committed any crimes.
This is the height of political doublespeak.
Jim Shea
Odd you should say this. The financial manipulations which many believe were crimes has not been looked at but in a superficial way.
Behind every great fortune there is a great crime.
"one of the most stupid things any US president has said"
0 still has a long way to go to beat "just keep shopping."
Like I have stated before: Bush, Cheney, Rummy, Condi, Wolfowitz, Yoo and the rest of our Government leaders that are complicit and condoned torture are definitely guilty and should have been tried for war crimes by Obomba, except he drove the get away car when he said: " I want to look forward "! This quote proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Obomba is part of the same crime family!
Indeed, and we must not forget the crimes continue. The wars, torture and slaughter of innocents is escalating. The funding of Israel (despite the phony rhetoric) is full speed ahead, the weapons shipments are larger than ever, and expenditures for war and related activities is at an all-time high. I really don't see how Obama et al. are less evil than the last bunch of criminals.
Hey Socialist. Maybe you can explain to me why the Tea Baggers call Obama a Socialist, that is not a pejorative, like Witch Doctor or Muslim ect. For the life of me, that is something that I just do not understand.
good question PR:
First of all, socialism (like other isms) is a complex concept and group of theories that are not homogenous, there are a multutude of strains of socialist thought over the last couple of hundred years. Many many books have been written that deal with these ideas, and theories. It is far too much to reduce to a few paragraphs or a simple label.
Most US folk have very little education or knowledge about politics, political theory, history etc. In order to empty any meaning out of terms like socialism, anarchism, liberalism, they are simply turned into meaningless negative slurs.
The MSM supports the mis-use and distortions of these terms, concepts and ideas and they are reduced to buzzwords. In Europe and many other places "socialism" has quite positive connotations for large swathes of the public.
During WWII, the Nazis went after anarchistts, socialists and communists first. It was primarilty these groups who resisted Nazi occupation. Leftists were heroes after WWII, something most US folk have no idea.
In our propaganda spin illusion-land, commies, pinkos, and anyone who does not believe the lies they are told are smeared as, anti-American, traitors, commies, pinkos, socialists etc.
This lends very well to the two-party good cop, bad cop show. Obama supports monopoly vulture capitalism, the very antithesis to any form of socialism. Calling him a socialist, helps to shift the political frame of debate well to the right.
Socialism and anarchism are some of the most mis-understood political concepts and ideas. The ruling classes have always feared these ideas, as they challenge people to question the status quo.
Good examples of socialists and or anarchists in the US past are: Mark Twain, Helen Keller, Eugene Debs, Big Bill Heywood, Harry Lundeburg, Joe Hill and Emma Goldman, just to name a few. Some famous ones still alive are Noam Chomsky, Pete Seeger and recently deceased, Howard Zinn.
Socialism, anarchy, anarcho-capitalism and anarcho-socialism are not interchangeable. The first requires a representative authority and the rest do not want it. This is a huge difference when one considers that any system of representative government is easily corrupted. Direct democracies have proven to be the most durable and bring the most benefit for the majority of people. http://www.ni4d.us/fossedal
Good point, and I would add that anarcho-capitalists are faux anarchists. They seem to have no problem with corporate dominance despite the top-down authoritarian hierarchy of corporations.
I agree. It is what makes right Libertarianism a contradiction.
Good post socialist. I recall an interview with Chomsky where he said that the American view of Libertarianism (as a right-wing, pro-capitalist, pro-private property, ideology) is peculiar to the US. Everywhere else in the world he continued, Libertarianism was a synonym for anarchism (radical leftist, anti-state, anti-capitalist, anti-private property etc).
Good point Tom; in a similar vein, the term "liberal" means something quite different in the UK, Europe, Japan and most other places than it does in the USA.
Great post all Americans could do well to read history of the labor movement focusing on the IWW wobblies and Spanish Civil war especially George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia. Zinn's Peoples History is of course a classic in this genre as well.
On a separate note I find it interesting how different posts on CD attract different crowds of people this post IMO has attracted some of CDs brightest most incisive thinkers, where as others seem to draw in Obamabots, Republican trolls, and I am guessing even outright provocateurs. Thanks for the boost I was feeling down reading the calls for martial law from some of the "liberals" or perhaps provocateurs in the other items.
Finally could CD please provide some option for us to network and contact each other like an option to provide an e-mail link (with an easy opt out for those who want to protect their privacy )so we could do something about our convictions like perhaps organizing a general strike?
I appreciate your common sense and insight in your reply socialist, but much too erudite for the average Tea Bagger.
We must look sideways before looking sideways!
Why dosen't the US insist that Israel adher to the UN Goldstone Report calling for the Israeli internal investigation of the December 2008 Gaza War - or kick it up to the International Court of Justice if they don't adher to it?
Simple - the United States supplied Israel with phosphorus bombs - illegal according to the UN - and would thusly be tried for war crimes.
And that is just one example. In Indonesia, the US was complicit in the 1967 overthrow of Sukarno. If the US investigated that, then they would have to investigate the 1954 US overthrow of Mossedeque in Iran, 1955 overthrow of Guzman in Guatemala, the 1973 overthrow of Allende in Chile and dozens more.
Why dosen't the US look back and investigate - because the United States is a cowardly nation that should be overthrown - only then would the United States understand the horrors that they bred.
What else can we expect from the US, shining and entitled example to the rest of the world? Do as we say, not as we do, with a blind eye for their real allies, however despicable they may be, and the threat of invasion (The Hague Invasion Act) if we don't toe the line and try to bring an American to justice, to name just one example.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem applies to all.
Inner Party President O'Brien has mastered his Orwellian doublethink.
"To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself -- that was the ultimate subtlety; consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word 'doublethink' involved the use of doublethink."
Double Standard President?
Ignore that! We have to protect the presidency, give him more chances, have hope he'll change his ways... That is why I, Dennis Kucinich, tell you voters to overlook Obama's continuation of Bush foreign policy, effective amnesty to the Bush torturers, putting corporations before people, standby as the US supports Gaza's ethnic cleansing and support him and a health care bill that I don't like and have personally called a sell-out to insurance companies.
Well said!
Yes! and just like you did on the plane with Obama, I recommend we all simply sit quietly, listen carefully and take notes. Great!
Spot On !!!

To the point!
Janus --the Roman god of past and future --and of doorways --entrances and exits ---looking both ways -- Janus faced --root of the English word 'janitor,' keeper of doorways --and by extension --- halls, and entire buildings....
The two faces of Janus symbolize the virtue of vigilance, but true to its dualistic nature, the two-face is also an icon of the vice of hypocrisy.
In the latter capacity, it ought to be incorporated into the Presidential Seal.
